**Notes**
Interesting live boot. The track listed as 'Armatrite Rifle' (or Armalite Rifle) is actually an early version of 'History's Bunk!'... 'Part Of This' is actually 'Blood Free', an unreleased song (at least until the 2005 CD reissue of Entertainment!); and they cover 'Rosanne', a song by Mekons. Some titles on the cover are listed incorrectly. Some are obvious, but 'New Entertainment' isn't. It's actually '5.45'.

Indeed, as silent says, if you haven't got this one yet, you should.
ReplyDeleteThis was the first vinyl bootleg of the Go4 to emerge ("Gang Bang" would later surface in the States), but both vinyl bootlegs show how few decent recordings of the Go4 in 1980 were around back then - this is a low-quality audience recording of the gig at the Hamburg Markthalle on 23rd February 1980. Still, beggars can't be choosers, and the inclusion of Blood Free (then known as "Part of This"), History's Bunk! and Rosanne by tour-mates the Mekons make it special, so get it whilst you can.
Meanwhile, there is one really good recording from 1980: the gig on 22nd May at the American Indian Center in San Francisco which was recorded for KALX radio by Terry Hammer who kindly shares his excellent recording here:

Just so's ya knows ... cheers, Dave Sez.
PS: Three years ago, I made a compilation of rare Go4 tracks from 1980-82 including Blood Free, Elevator and Rosanne, including the Mekons' covers of Armalite Rifle and Elevator. This also includes the professionally recorded "Rock Against Junk" gig in Berlin, which was released only on one long out-of-print German LP.
As it's still alive, hurry up and get it!

Thank you for this ! Thanks for anonymous, too (right clic works also with Firefox). There is also a 1980 show I saw on the net : gang of four 1980-11-02 new orleans live at ole man rivers boot.
ReplyDeleteHi Mouldysauerkraut, Anonymous here (actually I always sign my comments as Dave Sez). I think you meant this one: http://floppybootstomp-ii.blogspot.com/2015/05/gang-of-four-live-new-orleans-la-1980.html ?
ReplyDeleteCheers, Dave Sez.
Right ! So it came from here, not a surprise. Thanks again !
DeleteAnd another wee note: the Go4 would return to Hamburg in 1981, though to the Fabrik rather than the Markthalle, and this time round, the audience recording bootlegged on cassette by Mutterstolz Records is of much better quality, and a fantastic setlist including all the classics from the first two albums - a real gem that anyone who likes Go4 really should have. Get it in FLAC over here:

Cheers, Dave Sez.
And whilst we're at it, here's another Go4 that silent might like to feature with a posted link - amazingly still alive after four years, this is an A- AUD FLAC recording (great job, crankingamps!) of the re-re-formed Go4 playing in Australia in 2011 - a fantastic recording not to be missed. NB: both FLAC and mp3 versions are still live on mediafire, but the mp3 version is only @116 kbps, so get the FLAC and convert ...
