Guest Designer at A Vintage Journey

I am excited to be a Guest Designer at A Vintage Journey today.  Anne is the hostess for their challenge this month and she is calling it Mini Marvels.  She describes it this way:

This month's challenge is to create something in miniature - it could be a little book, a tiny scene, a small canvas, a wall hanging or even a box. It MUST be 4" or less in size and be created in your vintage, shabby, mixed media, art journalling, industrial, timeworn or steampunk style.

I decided to make a micro album and a box to present/store it in.  I am going to show you all the pages in this little gem but I really got carried away so there are lots of photos. The album is 3 3/4" long x 2 1/4" wide and 2" thick.  All the pages are punched on one side and have been tied together with some sari silk so it opens like a tag book.  I will describe the pages in general and then provide a list of supplies at the end.

This was a great way to use up scraps of paper in my stash but I tried to give it a vintage vibe and tie everything together with lots of black and cream and with Vintage Photo Distress Ink.

Where I could I used hinges for tuck spots and pockets, especially the side and horizontal pockets.  The hinges allow for the full us of the pocket.  Corner pockets were just adhered with 1/8" double-sided tape.  They too could have hinges but it takes a little more figuring out so they don't show.

Grab a cup (or glass) of something, sit back and enjoy.

The cover has patterned paper, a punched and layered flower with a gem centre, a sentiment and a die cut flourish.

On the left you see the back of the cover with patterned paper.  On the right is a page with patterned paper, a gem flourish, black lace, painted leaf, and a punched and layered flower with a gem centre.

On the left is a page with patterned paper, and a pocket with a punched border that includes a folded journaling spot.  On the right is a pocket page with patterned paper and a fussy cut corner tuck spot fussy along with a couple little tags.

The photo mat shown is an example of each of the photo mats in the pocket pages with a scrap of paper from one of the papers that I used - each side of each photo mat has a different paper and are designed to fit the small photos that you get in a package of school photos.

On the left is page with patterned paper, a long pocket with a sentiment and a folded journaling spot with a belly band.  The right page is made of foil paper-backed tape that has been embossed and then coloured with alcohol inks.

This is the box that has been made from medium chipboard and  measures 4" long, x 3" wide and 3" high.  All sides of the box top have patterned paper - the bottom has been left as is.  The very top is decorated with lace, a gem flourish, a loopy organza bow, silk flowers and painted silk leaves. .

Flower Page

I saw that the August challenge over at A Vintage Journey was called Watercolour and thought that I might enter it and try my hand at some watercolouring since it isn't something I have ever done.  I came up with this page for my art journal.

I am currently using a Canson Mixed Media journal and don't find that the pages stand up well to lots of wet media so I glued two pages together with Mod Podge.  I put the glue on using an old rewards card, joined the pages, spritzed the back and front with a fine mist of water and then put them between two pieces of waxed paper under a heavy book to dry and that kept the page fairly flat.

Once it was dry I added some texture with a stencil (Teresa Collins) and some Molding Paste (Golden).  Once the paste was dry I covered the page with a coat of White Gesso (Liquitex).

I painted the page with a coat of Blush Fresco Finish (Paper Artsy) followed by a coat of Candy Floss Resco Finish that I wiped back in spots with a baby wipe.

I added some stamping with Jet Black Archival Ink (Ranger) and a script stamp called Haunted (Recollections).  Then I added stenciling with a Harlequin Stencil (Tim Holtz) and Watering Can Archival Ink (Wendy Vecchi for Ranger).

Next came some spray colour.  I used Twisted Citron and Worn Lipstick Distress Spray Stain (Tim Holtz) and some watered down Zesty Zing Fresco Finish (Paper Artsy).

I added a few circles and lines using White Gesso (Liquitex) and a cap from a spray bottle and an old rewards card.

I stamped one of the flowers and stem with leaves from a set called Flower Garden (Tim Holtz) using Jet Black Archival Ink (Ranger).  The stamping was done on Watercolour Card (Canson).

I coloured the image using watercolour pencils (Artist's Loft since that was all I had.  It was fun so a trip to the art supply store is in the works so I can buy something better and get practicing.

I tore around the image and inked the edges with Spun Sugar Distress Ink (Tim Holtz).  The sentiment was a freebie from Create with TLC and was computer generated.  The edges were torn and inked in the same manner as the flower image.

My Granddaughter taught me a bit more about using watercolours today.  These were techniques she learned at one of her art camps this summer.  I am impressed with her abilities and her love of art - she is just 11 (going on 20 but that is another story - lol).

Change

I am thrilled to have been invited to do a Guest Designer spot at A Vintage Journey.  Jennie is the hostess and is calling the current challenge Words That Are Special.

When I started to think about what I would do, a special word that came to mind was Change. I spent some time with the uber-talented and very lovely Jenny Marples a couple months ago and when I told her I tend to over-think my creations she encouraged me to just play, which for me would involve change. Then I thought about a quote I heard at a conference a number of years ago about that very topic and I knew those would be my special words.  This canvas came about by playing and trying to follow Jenny's advice.

If you want to see how this canvas came together, please pop over to A Vintage Journey where you can get all the details.
