Vintage journal pages and new Alison Bomber stamps

Hi it's Brenda here today and I'm sharing some vintage journal pages created so that I could specifically use the fabulous new stamps from Alison Bomber. I love using quotes on journal pages and Alison has quite a few sets of different themes - the ones I chose are the new 'Friendship' set - EAB10 from PaperArtsy.

The quotes are varied and beautiful. These were stamped onto media paper and chopped up; I inked the edges with ground espresso distress ink before adhering them to the page.

I started with a layer of white gesso covering the page before adding some collage papers. I then added scrapes of black gesso and more white gesso.

Some subtle stamping creates a little more interest as does some small die-cuts and a couple of tickets.

I finished off with the paper dolls with some cheesecloth and of course the important words that give the pages meaning and a story.

There are some more photos of the process steps over at Bumblebees and Butterflies if you'd like to have a go at something similar.

I'll be back next week to show you photos and the project from my workshop last Saturday held at the Country View headquarters.

Happy crafting.

Eileen Hull Wrapped Journal and Tim Holtz Collage Paper

I have been playing with Eileen Hull's new Wrapped Journal and fallen totally in love with the size and shape of it.

I have also used the Tim Holtz Collage Paper and his Baseboard Frames and Botanical Ephemera.

All the elements fitted together beautifully and all I needed to do was add some magnets and string to secure it.

I haven't added any pages yet but it is easy to cut some to fit under the elastic or to buy some ready made booklets - passport size.

If you'd like to see the process steps you are very welcome to visit my blog at Bumblebees and Butterflies.

Thanks for popping in.

Spooky

With the start of September and more Autumnal weather, my thoughts have turned towards Halloween and using the Halloween themed stash I have. I try not to limit Halloween or Christmas goodies to just those holidays because it seems a waste to leave them sitting on the shelf for a year but inevitably we do. So, time for me to dust them off and ink them up!
I started by spraying a page in my Small Creative Flip Journal with Pure Sunshine ink. I love this colour!
I then added a border for the bat  and spider to hang from. The spider's body was coloured with Squeezed Orange ink decanted into a water brush. By stamping the bat on the page you retain all of the little details that would be really difficult to cut out. I also stamped him (and the chap from the stamps set) on card to colour and cut out.
I then added some Speckles using Black Soot Distress Ink.
I stamped out some accessories and die cut them. I should have coloured them before cutting them out (which is what I usually do) as the broomstick in particular felt very delicate! Always learning!
The sentiment was stamped with alphabet stamps (I LOVE these!) and some additional word stamps by Emma Godfrey. The washi tape is from the Aristocrat set. Some white circles (made with an old lid) and gold painty lines finished the page off.
Hope you feel like dusting off your seasonal stamps too!

Mixed Media Layers

Hi it's Brenda here with a mixed media background and I'm still using the colours of the challenge theme for this month. You can find that here if you would like to enter it.

Begin by covering a piece of card with tissue wrap, decoupage paper or stamped tissue paper, (I chose to stamp my own design on tissue paper), adhere it with decoupage and when dry sand the edges to get it to size rather than cut it with scissors.

Scrape white gesso over the surface with a piece of plastic card or palette knife.

Paint painty layers of washes through the gesso and dry each layer before adding the next. By painting the washes you have complete control as to where they go on the substrate, the thickness of the paint and you can dab areas off with kitchen roll. This is so different to the dip, drip and dabble techniques I often use.

Take a little white gesso and a blending tool and foam and then apply through a stencil - dry.

Make up a 'dirty wash' using pin point amounts of paynes grey, phthalo turquoise and raw umber paints with plenty of water ....

...... and paint it over the surface and you will see how it immediately tones down the white gesso.

Mix some white crackle paste with some of the paints (I created a light blue and a light green) and taking the same stencil apply it over some of the clocks already.
there. After it dries you will see the cracks appear.

To help the cracks show make a wash of raw umber and apply it lightly over the clocks and see the cracks appear and also create a more grungy appearance.

This is now ready to use for a journal pane or card background.

I will be using this for a journal page, if you would like to see how it is finished please pop over to Bumblebees and Butterflies where I have completed it ready to be inserted into the new journal when it's finished.

Thanks for stopping by today.

This is Art

I am really enjoying adding pages to my journal that I'm just letting happen without planning them out beforehand. I tend to grab the nearest paints, inks and stamps to hand and just see what happens!
My favourite colour combination is Bourgainvillea and Beach Hut with Snowflake so those were the nearest paint colours! I started by putting my favourite pink on the page (the tape is there to protect the opposite page) with some white paint using a paintbrush:
Using an old gift card I put more pink and white on in a random pattern. The colour looks different thanks to sun going in and out on a very cloudy day!
I added blue through a stencil:
Then I added all the stamping to the page using Everything Art 03 for the main images and Zinski Art 01 for the chains. I stamped the large circle and two paintbrushes on some card and coloured them in.
As a final flourish I added a sentiment to the bottom of the page (highlighted in white pen). To make the sentiment, I build up the words on an acrylic block so I know they will fit before I stamp them. Remember to build the word backwards! I used Everything Art 05 - I LOVE this alphabet!
And that is that! I hope you like my journal page - do share your pages made with what you have to hand!

A little birdie

I am thrilled to share a page in my Dylusions Journal. I wanted to use a tag as the central image and to create a background that was complementary but the reverse... I hope that makes sense!
I used an old store card to spread paint on a tag.
Then I sanded the tag and added some brown Distress Ink.
I forgot to take a photo of the next stage of the tag but I did the same on the journal page! After putting paint on the page (as before) I added the darker colour through a stencil. When dry I added white over the top and then sanding when dry.
Then I added a little stamping to the tag and it's complete! The stamps I used were Zinski Art for PaperArtsy - ZA05, ZA07 and ZA08
Thank you, as always, for popping by.

Thin Ice

It's my pleasure to have a project featured today. I wanted to create a really interestingly textured background and this is what I came up with!
I started by layering Black Dress and then Snowflake paints on my page using a brayer. I didn't dry in between the two colours and you naturally get this 'blue' shade! Clever 'eh?! I use quite a small amount of paint (a little goes a long way) and I like to see the layers peep through so I didn't worry about covering the page fully.
I added Granny Smith paint through a leafy stencil (that I used upside down). Since writing this post I've realised this stencil is supposed to be like tyre tracks but to me it looks like leaves on a vine...! I aded a tiled floor and repositioned the stencil to draw white pen highlights.
I used a few Elenazinski stamps (border, chap and spider, circle in background) to make up the background and I stamped the chap on paper, coloured him in and then added him to the page. The final flourishes was to add a Dylusions stencil and some Gold highlights.
Thank you as always for popping by!
