Fine dress
is a mark of extravagance with ladies which argues badly for our cause. Not only are they wasting their own means, which might be better employed, but they are encouraging blockade running, increasing the price of gold, depreciating the value of our own currency, and entering to a passion for finery which spreads rapidly and must prove ruinous. By economy in dress and household matters generally ladies can do a great deal for the cause, and they owe it to themselves to commence the good work at once.
