Mayor's Court, May 23d
--John G. Scott and John Dowie were arraigned for assaulting and robbing James Overby of a gold watch, a pocket-knife, and $27 in money. Overby was sergeant of a guard stationed at the navy yard at Rocketts. The prisoners came by and extended a pressing invitation for him to step aside and take a drink with them. He did so; but had hardly gotten out of sight of the sentinel when they garroted him in the most approved style, one holding him by the threat to prevent an outcry, while the other appropriated his effects. After accomplishing this they left their prostrate victim and made off. As he happened to know them, but little difficulty was found in putting the guard on their track. The case was continued until Monday.The case of Thus. V. Carr, a clerk in the Comptroller's office, charged with forging papers to draw pay due deceased soldiers, was called up, when the Mayor determined, as the offence was committed against the Confederate Government, to send Carr before Commissioner Watson for examination.
Sundry of the colored population were arraigned and punished for petty infractions of the law.
