A Stern Chase.
--A few nights ago, on the Galena and Chicago Air-Line Road, near Dixon, the engineer of a train of fourteen freight cars, when descending a long and steep grade, discovered that the cars had been uncoupled and were left behind, and that he was going ahead alone with his locomotive and tender. He soon saw the train coming down the grade after him with tremendous speed. He put steam to his horse to keep out of the way; but they soon overtook him, and such was the force of the collision, that five of the freight cars were cut in two before they were brought to a stand.
