3. ὡς ἐκράτησε: i.e. at Chaeronea. Philip treated Athens with great consideration after the battle, restoring her 2000 prisoners without ransom; but wreaked his vengeance on Thebes (as a former ally) and invaded Peloponnesus. Hist. § 68. (Grote XI. 699—705.)— ᾤχετ᾽ ἀπιὼν, had taken himself off.
6. ἦν ἄν τις...κατηγορία, there might perhaps be some ground for blame and accusation etc.: the older editions have ὅμως ἦν ἄν τις and κατὰ τῶν οὐκ ἐναντιωθέντων, with an entirely different meaning.
8. ἀξίωμα...ἡγεμονίαν...ἐλευθερίαν: see XIX. 260, τοῦτο τὸ πρᾶγμα (the corruption of leading men by Philip) Θετταλῶν μὲν...τὴν ἡγεμονίαν καὶ τὸ κοινὸν ἀξίωμα ἀπωλωλέκει, νῦν δ᾽ ἤδη καὶ τὴν ἐλευθερίαν παραιρεῖται: τὰς γὰρ ἀκροπόλεις αὐτῶν ἐνίων Μακεδόνες φρουροῦσιν. For Euboea see § 71 (below).
9. πολιτείας, free governments. See Arist. Pol. VI.
10. ἁπάντων: partitive with ἐνδο- ξότατα, in the most glorious way possible. So εὐφημότατ᾽ ἀνθρώπων in XIX. 50, ἀναισχυντότατ᾽ ἀνθρώπων in XXVII. 18, δικαιότατ᾽ ἀνθρώπων in XXIX. 28.
