πρὸς τὴν ἑαυτῶν ἐπιστήμην—in accordance with. according to the standard of ‘their science and strength.’ πρός=pro
ἐπεχείρουν—‘proceeded to attack.
καὶ—accordingly
καθ᾽ ὅσον . . . αὐτοῦ=κατὰ τοσοῦτο αὐτοῦ ὅσον . . . ἑώρα ‘at that part which faced the city.’ Gylippus would attack the inner side of the A. lines, the troops from the Olympieium the outer side. ὸρᾶν πρὸς=spectare ad. For οἱ ἀπὸ τοῦ Ὀ. see c. 4.6.
ἡ γυμνητεία = οἱ γυμνῆτες. They were armed with swords. So Eur. Andr. 1119 uses ἀτευχὴς of one who has laid aside his weapons of defence, but retains his sword.
προσῄει—attracted into the number of γυμνητεία.
οἰόμενοι—the sentence would be more symmetrical with ᾤοντο.
ἐπὶ τὰ τείχη—mounting on the walls.
ἱππέας—Freeman remarks that it is strange that we hear nothing of the A. cavalry.
