Mini LED TV has become the talk of the town these days but no one is pretty sure if it can beat the current king of the LED TV in terms of colour, contrast, brightness and clarity. The introduction of Mini LED technology is a cutting edge transformation in the TV industry. Mini LED technology is the result of decades of developments and advancements. The Mini LED uses a number of light-emitting diodes to improve the picture quality.

TCL happens to be the pioneer brands to include Mini LED technology in their products and commercialize it. TCL started using smaller LEDs in their range of TVs that can have finer and better control over its highlights and shadows as a result the viewers get better contrast and picture quality. The Mini-LEDs are implanted inside the TV and are used to enhance the backlight of the television, the liquid crystal layer then modulates that light to create a better and enhanced picture.

While the conventional LEDs are used for lighting and as a backlight module for your display screens the Mini LEDs are used for backlight application in displays for power saving, and thinner HDR display. The Mini LED display provides better control over local dimming and thus is able to brighten and darken certain portions of the screen at the same time.

Going Big with Mini LEDs

However, though there is no standardization, LEDs smaller than 0.2 millimetres are said to be Mini LED and the ones smaller than or around 0.01 millimetre are said to be micro-LED. In layman’s terms when we make the LED smaller it becomes dimmer. This means that the Mini LED is capable of creating the same amount of light using lesser energy.

TCL uses thousands of mini LEDs across the back of the television. These LEDs were grouped into several zones. Both these numbers are much greater than what is used in a conventional LED TV. However, not all Mini LED TVs would have the same amount of LEDs. The budget models would have a lower number of LEDs implanted as compared to the premium models.

More zones mean that it will also automatically reduce the blooming. Blooming is the result of coarse backlight local-dimming. In a conventional LED TV the local-dimming is also done on surrounding areas instead of focusing upon the main object.

To simplify it further you can assume a man standing in the dark. Now when you watch the scene on a conventional LED TV the backlight will also light up the surrounding area. However, the benefit of Mini LED is that the technology will only backlight the area in which the man is standing and thereby the focus will be on the man and not the surroundings.

Enjoy a Theater-Like Experience at Home with the Mini LED

Dark blacks and bright whites have been the most wanted things of the TV image quality. Now just add in the possible colours to this with the Quantum DOTs and you will have the image quality like never before. Though, OLED is sought to be the king of the television tech however the technology has its constraints and the major ones are its price and that it can not be easily incorporated in smaller screen size television. LCD was then considered to be a cheaper alternative to OLED tech. However, with the introduction of the Mini LED, OLED can get strong competition in terms of picture quality, contrast, colour, and brightness.

Advantages of Mini LED

- Mass production of Mini LEDs are easier than micro LEDs

- The cost of Mini LED is 70-80% lesser than that of the OLED panels

- Mini LED has huge potential to be coupled with other displays like LCD

- Mini LED provides much more control over local dimming

- The Mini LED offer better contrast, brightness and black levels

- Mini LED Offers a dynamic range

The Final Words

Mini LEDs are said to be the latest version of the LCD panel with better and advanced backlight. As a result of this, the images produced by Mini LED are by far brighter and better. Not only this, Mini LED TVs are believed to have more endurance and reliability as compared to conventional LEDs.
