Waiting For The Bell To Ring

My friend's son is changing schools, so she asked me to do her a favor today while she was at work - it's open enrollment and she wanted me to take him to the new school to get started on his testing so he can begin classes on Monday.

The school I was taking him to was my old high school. I actually graduated in New York, but I did my freshman, sophmore and junior year in Arizona, and that's the school he was transferring to. As I was sitting in the Administration Office waiting for my friend to meet me, I realized that the last time I had set foot on that campus was sometime in 1984.

TWENTY-EIGHT years ago.

Talk about feeling old. So old, that before my friend's son went into the building I said, "Pull your pants up, or pull your shirt down - whatever works so your underwear doesn't show. And make sure to turn your cell phone off."

This kid is smart, in the gifted program. And he's an athlete. He's going to do well at this school, no doubt. But at sixteen, I'm not sure he understands that it's not a good idea to walk into a new school with your pants halfway down your ass. What is it with the kids today that that's even a style?

And what's with me saying "what is it with the kids today"?? Although, as I was reminded by a friend today regarding another situaion, I probably should have been born in another era.

Preferably, one where you were taken to school in a horse and carriage.
