Chuck D wants you to work harder

Chuck D thinks the current crop of rappers are falling somewhat short:

"I'm a servant. I'm just here to serve the people," Chuck D told Spinner after the show. "Hip-hop is like my military."

The man who famously called rap music "the black CNN" says that artists are obliged to say something meaningful in their lyrics, and that too many MCs fall short of that mark.

"You have to say something in your lyrics," he says. "Sure, you can make it entertaining, and it should be entertaining. But you have to be saying something."
It gets worse for American rappers, as he reckons they're not just falling short of their forebears, but they're also being shown up by their neighbours:
"There are a lot of Canadian artists," he says. "K-os, K'naan, those are guys who put a lot of thought into representing their cultures and where they're from. In the United States, we have artists like Brother Ali and Saigon, so there are some."
But mostly, Canadian (or Somali-Canadian, in the case of K'naan) are showing up Americans.

Asked for a comment, American rap was too busy designing perfume bottles to come to the door, but American rap's mother said she expects American rap would accuse Mr D of being an "h-eight-ar", and would offer Mr D the chance to suck his penis. As she closed the door, she sighed and muttered "he was such a lovely child, too."

Shakira misses an open goal

The drafting in of Shakira to do the Official World Cup anthem this year hasn't exactly gone down well in South Africa:

"It's horrible," local fan Lindi Munonde said. "I'm not standing for it. I mean what is our president doing about it?"

Yes. Something must be done.

South Africans are understandably upset that - having proved they could build an infrastructure to support the event, and decided to use the football as a way of proving themselves as good as any other country - someone decided they were incapable of knocking out a cheery, cheesy ditty:
"I love it that South Africans are just coming together as South Africans and saying, 'We've got our own people and it's an African World Cup. It's ours,"' 702 Talk Radio presenter Jenny Cryws-Williams said. "We are going to put on a fantastic World Cup. Why don't we have South Africans doing it for us?"

If that's upsetting, the last line of the report will shatter hearts:
Toronto rapper K'Naan's "Waving Flag" has been adopted as Coke's officially licensed anthem for the World Cup.

The World Cup has an officially-licensed Coke anthem? What exactly does that mean, besides anyone who thinks about it feeling a little queasy?

Juno Awards: Canada gives prizes

Who knew there was a still a land where working on a Dolores O'Riordan record would see you win a prize, rather than be detained in a secure unit?

Dowloadable: J Period & K'Naan

J Period and K'Naan have been working on a cross-genre albumy type thingy which pays tribute - it says here - to Fela Kuti, Bob Marley and Bob Dylan. Not too much tribute to Dylan, though, as they've released a free, three-track sample of what this all actually means: Download it for free from the J Period site.

J Period. K'Naan. It's a pity LL Cool J was busy.

AT&T won't be bidding on the web rights

Michael Franti's annual Power To The Peaceful Festival is starting to take shape right now: 8th September in San Francisco, featuring Franti, DJ Spoony, the Indigo Girls, K'Naan and, as they say "more", along with political speakers, beautiful agitators and the understandably indignant.
