Perfect "Day"t

It has been about two years since BJ and I went to the dentist together.  So when out appointment took us today, we decided to extend our one-on-one with lunch at one of our local faves, "Morelia's", then decided on a spontaneous trip to the Loveland Living Planet Aquarium!  I love this man and have such a blast monopolizing his time.  It was especially fun going to a place, like the aquarium, that we have never been except with kids.  It is always a blast with kids, but it is refreshing going with someone who doesn't beg for everything they see as they pass the gift shop.  Even though he does love to spoil me and pointed out a bunch of things he thought I would like...all I wanted was him, and a refillable Diet Coke.

BABIES!

BJ and I usually have to fight over who gets to hold a baby, but tonight there were TWO!!! Not twins, but cousins! Jamie threw a birthday party for Adam and these are babies from his side of the family.  It is so fun being the "aunt"!  I feel like when my babies were this age, I did not really get to be much of an aunt because I had my own little ones that had my constant attention.  Now that my baby is 10, and only wants me around to play pokemon on my phone, I get to spread my attention to other little humans that cross my path.  BJ has the same mentality as me and is loving this phase of our lives.  No toxic teens, and no teething toddlers, just a good opportunity to see who else is part of our world.

Still in love

"I'm in love, I'm in love, and I don't care who knows it!"  One of my favorite lines from the movie, "Elf".  Today is mine and BJ's anniversary.  We were married in 1998 and I am still glad we did it!  It is so fun being married.  It is harder than I ever imagined, but as far as being surprised by my expectations, I never expected it to be so rewarding, as well.  I love my husband, probably more than he knows, or that I express.  I am not the most expressive person, and that is something I know I need to work on (even though he makes it hard sometimes).  But I am so proud of what we have created together and look forward to every day that I get to spend with him.
I also must say I still love my ring as much as the day it was slipped on my trembling finger.

Brunch Date

July 16, 2016
New restaurant within "walking distance".  I love that BJ isn't afraid to walk a little bit to earn his breakfast.  When I first started my binge walking, Ashlyn was my walking buddy.  She fizzled out pretty quick and BJ gladly stepped (literally) in.  Today's destination was the new restaurant by the library.  Overpriced, and way too long of a wait, but great tasting food made it worth the walk, and possibly a second attempt.  The distance there and back home, cutting through the neighborhood, is close to 5 miles, which puts me really close to my 10k step goal for the day.  Not only is it great exercise, but I find so much joy in spending one on one time with this man.  I don't get enough.

Field trip

April 25, 2016
Field trip to Capitol Hill and the Daughters of Utah Pioneer Museum.

Utah Natural History Museum

April 7, 2016

Mother-Daughter Date

Mom and I have been talking about getting together for lunch when I go off track, since I started working in your round of school… Six years ago. I think today may be the first time we have actually done it. And we also went to the Utah Pioneer Museum.  I absolutely love spending time with my mom.  She is one of the most incredible people I know and I hope I can turn out to be half the person she is.
(Oh, yeah, this bottom picture is of a man walking his cat on a leash.  Just had to remember this)

Diet Coke on tap

Sometimes it's nice seeing what luxories other people have, it gives us things to hope for...
Or add to our Christmas list.
Is this a dream? No. My BFF really does have Diet Coke on tap. Along with a miriad of mix-ins.... And foam cups.

Things just got real.

Downtown in December

This is a picture from the exact place BJ proposed to me nearly 18 years ago.  It is so crazy to think we have been together for 20 years!

It was so magical downtown tonight as we walked from the candy windows at Macy's through temple square and up through the main street church offices block.  It was one of those rare hallmark moments where the kids get along, the husband and wife walk hand in hand reminiscing of time gone by while dreaming about what the future will bring.

It was actually quite perfect.

Winter Quarters

My cousin, My mom's sister Julie's son, Johnny.
He was the reason for this awesome trip with my mom.
Johnny fell in love with a darling girl named Hailey who accepted his hand in marraige and they agreed to get married in the Winter Quarters Nebraska Temple where her Dad is serving as mission president.  Thus the Kazz Road Trip (Kash & Lizz=Kazz).
Normally, well...not "Normally", trips in and of themselves are not "normal" for me, but that's beside the point... Anyway- Normally, I would't be able to take a trip like this, but the stars were in alignment and my husband and kids were supportive and encouraging so I took the bull by the horns, (or the BMW by the wheel) and took I-80 by storm. (actually, no storms were forecasted... even better)

Wednesday, I took half day off work and headed to Bountiful where my incredible mom was packed and ready. Once we got on the freeway we dove into conversation and hesitated beginning our book on disc (Secret Keeper by Kate Morton...20 Hours Long) but because of the length, we decided we had better make some headway.  It was so fun riding side by side just mom and I (and Flat Betsy in the trunk).  From Bountiful to Cheyenne, our stop for the night at the not so shabby Best Western, was about 8 hours (that's including about 6 potty breaks).  After check in we got right back into the car and headed over to the Yelp recommend Mexican dive about 15 min into the ghetto... I mean, City.

Thursday morning we enjoyed probably the second best Hotel Breakfast Buffet, ever. (The first had to be at the Farfield Inn in Richfield when we went to visit Jamie a few years ago)
Eight more hours had us to our hotel in Omaha.  The Country Inn was actually on the west side of the Missouri river but in a little Iowa annex so even though we were in Omaha, it was Omaha, Iowa, not Omaha Nebraska.

First thing, after we checked in, was to take in some sights.  Top of my list was the pedestrian bridge that bridged the Nebraska-Iowa state lines.  We didn't go up on the bridge at this point, just took it in and looked around.  We hadn't heard great things about Omaha, but so far, were pleasantly impressed.  We were invited to a BBQ at the mission home with Hailey's parents so braved the Nebraska interstate with clenched jaws and white knuckles.  Mom did a great job navigating and we made it unscathed.

Johnny and Hailey had  stars in their eyes and were so excited with all the family that came into town for the wedding.  They had about 40 people there for the event, only two were native Nebraskans.  I'm sure many more would have been there if they could, they are an adorable couple.

After the BBQ, Mom and I wanted to check out the temple at night so we took the long way back to our hotel.  At the temple, we were really able to see the famous stained glass really well.  It was really cool to see in that lighting.  Another cool thing was the bats.  There were some pretty active bats swooping around trying to intimidate the golden trumpeter, but he held strong and continued to play his tune.  After our jaunt around the temple, we headed across the dark, and a little bit scary, Mormon Bridge across to the Iowa side of the river.  We made another stop at the pedestrian bridge to check it our at night, and felt it was worth the stop.  Back at our hotel, after a long day in the car, we were ready to crash, but not before reading the information that Hailey's mom printed out with bits of information about the winter temple.  Four pages of facts and tid-bits, had mom and I pumped for the sealing in the morning.

Friday morning we were up with the sun to welcome our morning with a bike ride.  A cool tourist attraction in Omaha is their bike stations.  They have dozen(s?) of rental stands where you can rent a bike for $6 for one hour, and $4 for each additional hour.  At the base of our favorite bridge there was a convenient and simple checkout stand where we both took a minute to adjust our seats and load our gear into our nifty little wire baskets.  Once we got to the other side of the bridge I was antsy about time (after all, we couldn't be late for the whole reason we came to Omaha in the first place!) but mom insisted we had enough time to ride along the bank of the Missouri.  Following her lead we took a mellow stroll... or the equivalent of a stroll, but on a bike, past some pretty storm-hashed houses, some wild turkeys, a black squirrel with a red tail, and a search and rescue dog and handler (my assumption..).  Being two minutes away from our hotel we were able to get ready quickly and to the temple early enough to go the visitor center across the street.  The center had  a lot of information about Winter Quarters and the Mormon pioneers that set up shop there.  It was incredible and Mom and I were both so grateful to have been born in the generation we were born in.
After our whirlwind tour, we headed over to the temple where we sat in the chapel for what felt like an hour before we went into the sealing room.

After some fun pictures around the grounds and checking out the somber surroundings (the winter quarters cemetery and it's approximately 600 dead, are buried directly behind the temple) we headed to Flemmings for the wedding luncheon that forever changed my opinion of what a "Good" steak was.  (I finally understand what it means to want your steak to "Melt" in your mouth)

The luncheon was over around 4:30 so mom and I said good bye to the family and headed over to Iowa's Council Bluffs.  Here is where Brigham Young was sustained(?) as the new Prophet.  The city of Council Bluffs erected a replica of the historic tabernacle to earmark the event.  After a sizable celebration, the city deliberated what to do with the building and the church was able to procure it for $1.  One dollar.  The same amount they bought the property for the Winter Quarters Temple grounds.  "That LDS Church knows how to take care of property"!

With the night still young, mom and I headed downtown to check out a pretty substantial collection of statues.  It spanned 4 city blocks starting with an 1&3/4 scale wagon train with 4 fully-loaded wagons and teams, horses with riders, children, families... the works! This wagon train had "Startled a herd of bison which in turn fled startling a flock of geese that took flight.  The sculpture was beautifully depicted and if the sun wasn't setting, and we weren't in danger for entering a building without the proper identification, we would have lingered a bit longer.  But before the sun set for good, we drove over to the Zoo dome to check it out and made one last stop at a firefighter memorial before we headed back to the hotel to read ourselves to sleep.

Saturday morning we were up at 4:30 Utah time and on the road about an hour after that.  Only 8 potty stops on our 15 hour ride home, and we were back to moms before my kids were in bed!

(Pic above: Rising sun in Omaha, and Abe Lincoln rest stop about an hour west of Cheyenne)

I am so glad everything worked out the way it did and the trip couldn't have been more perfect.  I know we were only there for a day and a half, but really, that's all we even needed!  And... We didn't finish our book so sometime next week we get to take a day trip to try and finish it!  I love spending time with my mom.  She is an incredible woman and friend and I hope I can be like her when I grow up! Thanks for the fun trip Mom!

Also- Thanks to my awesome hubby who got the kids to and from school Wednesday-Friday, and Thanks to my dad who not only had to work on his birthday, but went out to boonieville to pick up three of his grandkids, introduced them to Arby's sliders, and spent the evening with them while his wife and daughter made their way back across the country.

Whose family rocks?

Mine.

Associates

I never thought I would go back to school.  I thought I would be a stay at home mom all my life, but life had different plans.  About 5-6 years ago, my cousin, Melissa called and asked if  I would be interested in volunteer interpreting for a Deaf basketball camp her work was sponsoring.  I thought long and hard and finally decided I would do it.  At the event, I met a certified interpreter, Laura, who after a lengthy conversation informed me that there is a "Fast Track" program that would help me get re-certified as a Sign Language Interpreter.  As soon as I got home, I looked into it.  It seemed too good to be true! I had to be quick because the deadline for registration was that day! So I checked with BJ and we both felt really good about it and I jumped on board.  The program was through Salt Lake Community College and I really enjoyed the classes.  Best of all....it was FREE!!!  After I finished the program, I got hired on with Jordan School District and have been working there since.  Well... about two years ago I had some really strong desires to take my career to a different level and decided I wanted to become a teacher.  So I got back into SLCC (not free this time... dang-it..) and worked my tail off to get my Associates.  When my Degree came in the mail (in a rigid envelope that was thrashed), I was beyond thrilled!  Now I am working towards my Bachelors in education and the day won't come fast enough that I will be teaching my own class.  I am currently on the fence with whether I want to teach Elementary, or Middle School English, Or High School ASL.  I have even entertained the thought of teaching at the Deaf School. (I guess it's more of a square post I am sitting on, rather than a fence) We'll see what happens within the next coupe years!
Wish me luck!!

Girls Camp

Girls camp. One of the best places on earth. I am the camp director for our ward and I got to spend the week with 17 amazing young women. It was an incredible experience and I can't wait till next year!
The girls in my ward are so great! They are helpful, kind, positive, spiritual and so much fun!

I do have to document that I was the ward camp director and bj was the stake medic so we go to vacation together! It was really fun to be there with him, even though we weren't even really together very often.

Local flavor

Local fav, Morelia's, never disappoints. My regular order is the taquito platter, filled with shredded beef. We often start with an appetizer of cheese quesadillas and their awesome homemade chips and salsa. It's a pretty busy little restaurant in the middle of the bustling area around Fashion Place mall, on the corner of 6100 south and State street. Bj and I have been coming here since we started dating 17 years ago, Bj, even before that. It is mouth watering delicious. He really likes their chili verde burrito too. Good thing we don't live close, or we'd never learn to cook anything new!

Digital vs. Hardcopy

It's my turn to host bookclub, and I have chosen to review Enders Game, by Orson Scott Card. It's kind of a given with the movie coming out... November 2, I think. Choosing a book for book club is almost as difficult as naming a child. They're just so many different choices available! I want to choose one that will have a lasting impression not only on me, but other readers as well (I'm talking about a book, not naming a baby… I'm not making any kind of announcement either… That "book" is closed)
With this Enders Game decision, I've (once again) come to a pretty frustrating debate in my own mind: digital vs. hardcopy. One thing that helps me decide on a book to review is the availability at the local library. Well, since the two books I REALLY wanted to review had holds 20 years out, I decided to look into a different book. Nothing was satisfying my mind like the two I had already narrowed it down to so I decided to just go with the cheapest purchase of the two, Enders Game. It is available in a digital format from $3.97 and a soft back copy can be purchased for about $7.00. (The other choice I had narrowed it down to was Blackmoore by Julianne Donaldson... Which I HAD to buy and couldn't put down till I finished... Which may still be a topic of conversation at book club)
Anyway... Since I really wanted to do Enders Game, and it was SOOOO cheap I decided to just do it and hope there are enough people willing to bite the bullet and pay to buy a copy. Therein lies my frustration. I hate that I have a book that I love, in a digital format, that I want to share with others in a physical sense, as in swapping hands, but more-so in a human connecting way. By getting together and talking about the plot and the characters and the similarities and the obscurities and many of the other elements that infiltrate the imaginations and cultivate the creativity of the human spirit.
That's kind of hard to do if you don't have a copy of the book.
So to make myself feel...better????... about selfishly purchasing digital copies of books (I feel like I can't even call them books!!) I will do what I was raised to do, make a visual display of pros and cons:

I still feel like I'm betraying my heart by reading a digital copy, but at least now I can justify it to myself, if only a little, by looking at my list.

*sigh*

(Maybe I feel like I'm disappointing my ancestors? Not grandma tho... She'd likely have a digital library to shame the iBooks store by now... Probably paid for by uncle John;)

Family night

We love our local water hole. The covered one. With flush toilets.
I have taken ash and cars a few times while AJ is at parkour but he always feels left out. When he asked if I'd take him while ash and cars went to gymnastics, I couldn't tell him no! After he got there he realized he had more fun with his brother and sister and suggested I ask dad to bring them over after their class. Dad, willingly obliged and joined in the fun.
I enjoyed from the sidelines while pretending to read an upcoming book-club book, "Until I Say Goodbye" (a memoir by Susan Spencer-Wendel, her tearfully joyful journey through her last year of life as she slowly suffers from Lou Gherig's Disease)
My family is awesome.

Not such a bummer

I was a little bummed that for my ever-so-important 33rd birthday I had to work and so did bj (who I actually don't even get to see till Wednesday after get off work).  I have always been under the impression that March 28th should be declared a universal holiday, so when I realized this year the world would continue turning, I couldn't help but feel a little less-than-excited. (not that I wasn't still somewhat excited, I only remember being disappointed once on my birthday, and sad on one different birthday, other than that, I've never had an un-eventful birthday, sometimes it's just up to me to make it the way I want it!)
So...
It was a Bummer that I had to work but...

Amie had a birthday "breakfast" waiting for me when I dropped off Carson, complete with candle and everything!  She even treated me to my choice of lunch after I got off work!

It was a Bummer that BJ had to work but...

My dad watched my kids while I went to a play with Mom and Michelle (after we all filled our bellies at costa vida)

It's a bummer that my birthday only lasts one day, but I got to have lunch with my brother today, and I get dinner with my family on Friday!!!

Oh... And an actual bummer:

This gorgeous plate and bowl set (of 10) that I got has to be returned because it is 1/4" too small for my dishwasher!!! (and buying a new dishwasher to fit my new dishes just isn't in the budget this year;) Hopefully I can find an exchange that comes close to these on the perfection scale.

So, that was basically my 33rd birthday!  I got to spend time with friends at work (and I love my job),  spend time with my kids, spend time with some friends, spend time with my parents, I got to read a lot of thoughtful birthday wishes sent via facebook and email, and I got to spend a lot of time thinking of people I love and appreciate who have helped shape and mold my life somehow in the past 33 years.  (Now if that's not a run-on sentence, I don't know what is.)

Thanks to all who contributed in any way to my wonderful not-even-close-to-a-bummer-of-a-day birthday!

Old lady

Whats in a title? Well, a lot of hidden meanings, thats what's in a title. In my mind, there are many different (positive) connotations that can be used when referring to a female individual. Little girl, little lady, girl, young lady, young woman, woman, and lady are among some that come to mind. The first five, of the latter, are all achieved by all females, at intervals, within the first 12 years of life. The status "woman" I have always considered more of a power statement than a gender representation, so yes, I am a strong independent woman, whatever.

Then you enter limbo... To old to be a "young woman", to young to be a "Lady". Limbo. How long will limbo last?

As of about 2:00 today, I can officially say, "I'm a Lady".

Up till now, The word "lady" has only applied to my mom and her friends, or in reference to "the ladies" I work with or "the ladies" in my neighborhood. There's a difference between "being a lady" and following social rules of etiquette, and such nonsense... But then there's the unmentioned "old" (and not in a "nearly dead" way, but a more "experienced, I want to be like her when I grow up" way) that has always preceded the all-encompassing, should-always-be-written-with-a-respectful-cultural-identifying-capital-L, "Lady". How does one achieve this status? Is it assumed as soon as you say "I do"? Or is it when you hear the first cry of your amazing heartfelt creation? Maybe it's when you shake the Deans hand as he hands you printed proof of years of sweat and tears. Or, like it was for me, is it a sudden realization as you are driving down the street and wave at the missionaries and think to yourself, "oh, what cute "boys" they are, I hope they are writing home often".
I'm sure it is different for every woman out there but I can officially say that,

Today, I became a Lady.

Rewind the clock...

We have been a pretty busy family.  Well, when I say family, I mean everyone at my house has had to adapt with me being around a little bit less.

"Why?" you ask...

Because in November I tested, and PASSED my Utah Novice Interpreter test!!!  Now, I am officially a Sign Language Interpreter for the local school district!  And although I miss my home life dearly the three days a week that I am at work, I love using the skills that took up the majority of my college years!

But wait,

Even busier days are to come, because I just got accepted to the 10 month- Interpreter Certification Advancement Network program (ICAN) and hope to be a "Professional Level Interpreter" by December!  I am really excited about starting this program and hope that I can give it my "all-that-I-have-left" (you know what I mean).

I'll do my best to report the happenings from time to time... (Maybe I'll enlist a "proxy-blogger" so I can have some recollection of my life when my gray hairs convert the rest of my body.)

Dear iphone,

Dear iPhone,

I am deeply sorry about the comment I made in yesterday's post. I love you. I love how quickly you get information to me. I love your hands-free headset that has push-button voice command. I love having pictures pop up of whoever is calling me. I love words-with-friends. I love some of my other games and apps. I love my calendar. I love how smart you are and how you remind me when I need to plan a primary lesson or pick up the kids from school. If you were put next to a cricut expression and I would have to choose between the two of you, I would choose...

Oh, wow.

I honestly can't finish that sentence.

Just know that you are loved, but I am not obsessed with you in an unhealthy way.

Please don't crash.

Sincerely,
Me

Oh, Roberts

Not to be racially profiling, but ever notice how two of the biggest craft stores in the valley are named after men? And, not that Men don't (or shouldn't) "Craft" but In my mind it seems they should be "Roberta's" or "Michelle's". Whatever, that's not what this is about.

For those Local reciepients of the Red Plum Marketing distribution, (and those who actually sort their mail before it expires) you may have noticed that every day this week Roberta's was having a daily one hour sale. I went on Thursday, right in the thick of it, and came out with one much needed, but completely boring, faux-leather 3 ring binder. I found out today...the last day of the sale... that during this "50%-off-your- entire-purchase" sale all other sales were over-ridden.

Well, crap.

I wish I knew that two weeks ago, or I wouldn't have bought my iphone!

Lucky for me, my mother in law was in need of the Cricut Expression, as was my Sister-in-law, who both purchased it and who both will let me play with their toys... i mean un-replacable creative resources and ultimate time saving devices that allow for more time to clean house and tend to the husband and kids... yeah, that.

Isn't it pretty?

I am not complaining about my cricut. I do have one. It gets done what I need, for the most part. Mine is just the original version. Who still has the original iphone?

Now. Get this. Not a totally different subject but... As much as I dislike making cakes, I think I may just take it up in order to purchase this. When I saw it, I literally heard angels singing in my head. More like screaming and jumping up and down and flapping their wings in a fabulous, feathery fury.

I have GOT to purge my creative circuts. They're about to blow.
