Finally!

James is coming home today. Oh, we've missed him! All you folks who wait at home for deployed partners, I salute you! A long weekend is too long for me. I did wear ugly dresses, I did drink beer and I painted. But I only painted a little.

The kids and I stayed around the house mostly (James drove up to WV in our only car). We went over to see the in-laws and my folks for Father's Day. And we went to Irene yesterday to plant some veggies.

Bea and Am have done pretty well. I've been a little obsessed with their sleep schedules because I need bedtime to be easy when James isn't here. It's been ok, but I've had a kid in the bed with me each night.

Half in Love

My husband James is a musician, did you know that already? He just finished a new song for a local movie. I really like this song because it is a sweet love song with a twist. It's always the twists that really get me- in music as much as in books and movies. I'm pretty sure this sing deserves a music video. What do you say?

Sunday, Sunday, So Good To Me

Today was great!

1) James and the kids went out for breakfast with my in-laws, leaving me alone to draw out some plans for paintings.

2) Then, the in-laws kept the kids while James went to work for 4 hours. I had so much time to myself--- drawing, cleaning house (yeah, lame, but it's fun when no one is around and Pandora is blasting Sally Seltmann Radio), watching Downton Abbey.

3) When James got off work, I met him at the gym and we had a good sauna together.

4) On the way to pick up the kids, I fantasised about tacos only to arrive and find my father-in-law making them! What?!

5) The kids actually went to bed just fine and James and I got some time to ourselves ;)

6) Tomorrow after school (and after picking up the kids- don't worry, Mama!) I am going to the library to pick up a bio of Zelda Fitzgerald and a really great movie:

James' Collection of Glasses

James and I have similar taste. We can go out matching if we want to-- right down to our glasses.

Outsider Art

James has taken to carving. He designed, carves and prints these to be album covers. He is self-taught.

Daddy Time

Thursday is becoming my favorite day of the week. It is the day that James doesn't go to work! We get up late (ish) and hang out until I go to school. My first class isn't until 12:15. Today we had toast and Yo Gabba Gabba for breakfast. And we played outside. I love that the kids get time with James when I'm not there. It's good for all of us.

Trading Roles

Last night when I finally got home from a long day at school, the children were clean, dressed and happy. The house was clean, all the dishes put away, beds made, clean. There was sweet tea for me and James had even made COOKIES.

That's IT. We are trading. I will go and earn our living and James can keep house.

Ready or not here comes Fall: school, tax law, childcare, homework. Am I ready? Who knows?

I will be going to school in Spartanburg, which a means 45 minute commute 2 days a week. Isobel and my mom will keep the kids on Tuesdays and James is taking Thursdays off to watch them. He will be in tax class every Thursday night this month and again later in the semester.

Have to admit that as nervous as I am about the hectic-o-meter, I am pretty darn excited about getting back into college after a 5 year hiatus!

Raising a Person

Being responsible for shaping a person is not a task to take lightly. James and I have done a lot of talking and adapting these past two years, especially now that there are two and one of them is a "terrible" two.

And by terrible I mean incredibly curious, adventurous and silly.

I always thought that as a mom my directive during these early years would be to make my child do whatever I told her to do, immediately, not touch off-limits things and hush when appropriate. If Beatrice behaved that way, my life would certainly be easier (after a few weeks or months of intensive discipline).

However, her life would be full of confusion and frustration.

If I tell her to do something that doesn't make sense to her, she challenges me. Not because she is rebellious, but because she is confused. She gets mad because why can't she have this or that? Why does she have to wait? Why can't she be in that room? (etc.)

I used to think this was the time to MAKE her obey me. I'm the boss, like it or not. My word is law and I don't have to answer to you. You don't get a say, you just obey. Or suffer the consequences.

Totally don't think this way any more. Sure, our new method may make it harder for other people to babysit. It may be a little longer before we can have quiet trips to the library or long conversations at the family dinner table.

Here's how it works: I don't make her do anything that is simply for my convenience, but for her safety or the safety of our family or home. It means that if she has a problem with something I require of her, I take the time to get down on the floor, eye to eye, and explain my reason for my demand.

It really does take some thought on my part. It is less convenient. But she understands me so much better and we actually are on the same page much more now.

I have an example from today of a time I was distracted and she got something off-limits. Here's how I dealt with it:

I was busy in the other room and I heard Beatrice say "Mama, I play with this camera." I ran to see what she had gotten. It was my dad's super old camera. The one I use for decoration on a bookshelf. I didn't know she could reach that high!

Anyway, she ran off, as she always does when she has a no-no in her hands. But instead of running after her and taking it away and instead of shouting for her to "comehererightnow," I said, "Hey, Bea, wanna see how it works? I'll show you."

She immediately came back and handed it to me. Then I showed her how the top part opens and you see through the window. She loved it!! But I told her it is very old and very special to Papa. It's not a toy and it goes on the shelf where it is safe. Will you put it up there? Yep.

I know I still have a whole lot of learning to do. I don't mean to come across like I think I have it all figured out, but this is a pretty big parenting re-direct for me. We are trying to do what is best for her in the long run rather than what is easier for us right now.

Ebay, with a little help from my friends

I'm selling on ebay (or I'm in the process of getting set up)! Etsy defines vintage as pre-1991, so now that I have a collection of amazing 1990s fashion (thanks to Max) I am using ebay. Emma is a fantastic model for these particular items and we really had a blast today getting fun shots (using James' new camera) of things she would actually wear!

Vintage Out-Takes

James and I have a number of really lovely items we'll be adding to the shop soon. Yes, we are doing this together now. Everything is more fun when you do it with someone you love! Here are some out-takes you can see to kind of preview the good stuff to come. This is just a tiny taste ;)

Isobel will be coming over tomorrow and we'll shoot some more. Oh, there's just so much!

Rebel

James got a camera for his birthday! It's the one I've always wanted, but it really is his, not mine. He has spent hours reading the manual and learning what everything does. James is a natural at photography. He has a good eye for composition. These are some pictures we took of the kids tonight. I'm not sure who took which. They're mostly of Ambrose because Beatrice just runs away...

Bird Finger Update

So yesterday we had another trip to the ER with our little wild child. Beatrice got her cast off! She lodged her hand between the sofa and window sill and pried it right off.

I had found her a few times earlier that day picking a whole in the cast so she could touch her index finger and saying, "hello finger."

At the hospital, they just wrapped it up as best they could. I'm glad they didn't put on a whole new cast!

Anyway, the pins will come out tomorrow!!!

On a totally different note: HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO MY FAVORITE HUSBAND!

Preview of Amazingness

Here are a few little things I've been saving for you. These and MANY more will be coming soon to my little shop.

You won't even believe how awesome this is. James is so hot in it, I don't know if I'll be able to bring myself to sell it..

I did a bit of modeling myself as you can seeeeeeeeeeee...

You know how I always say I can't stand teenagers? Well, good thing for Emma, she's only twelve. So I still like her. In a big ol' sweater...

Finally, here is my pretty girl before her accident. I cried when I looked through these pictures of her little hand intact, which is not even visible here.

COMING SOON!

Stress Relief

Have you been following Moorea Seal's series called Paint Your Love? It is so important to remember who you are and why you are on the path you have chosen! This world is full of so many distractions that we can easily lose sight of our own "Journey to the East" as James and I call it. (helpful hint: The distractions are a test of faith.)

via
I want to share with you a list of activities I find comforting, that help me feel like myself again after a long day or stressful week, or even if I get a few minutes when the kids are asleep. The ones that I am able to do most often are at the top of the list ranging down to the ones on the bottom of the list that are rarely feasible. These may seem like really silly, simple, not-deep-at-all things, but they mean a lot to me.

Comfort Activities, or Things To Do When It's All Too Much

1. Settle down with a book, google reader or bloglovin. I only read books and follow blogs that I really love and that truly inspire me. It is nice to get away from my own world and be a part of what someone else shares or creates. It is an easy activity because it just takes a little bit of down time-- and the kids give me that during naps. :)

2. Take a bath/shave my legs. I know a lot of girls like to shave their legs in the shower, do it quickly and get it over with. Not me. I like to slip into a hot bath and take my time. Being a woman is such a gift and I want to enjoy the simple pleasures associated with it! I might feel differently if I had to deal with a period every month like most girls.*

3. Go to the gym. I love my gym!!! I don't go every night, but I try to get in there 4 or 5 times a week. There's nothing like a good workout and a terribly hot sauna to wash away a day of teething and terrible twos!!

4. Paint my nails. Explanation unnecessary.

5. Go thrifting. But only if it is sans kids. It is a chance to get out of the house and be in my own mind. I like to search for vintage items that speak to my personal aesthetic.

6. Sip a glass of wine and talk it all out. Red wine, please. Merlot or Shiraz. James and I in our new home filling each other in on our days. The kids asleep and the chores done. Ah, domestic bliss.

7. Lie in the sun and do nothing. I think everybody did this as a kid, so it will always have a magical pull. You are warmed by the sun all over your face and you reflect. So simple.

8. Watch a movie with James. We like to make it an event with jiffy-pop and a symphony bar to share. Sometimes we even get a coke and pour it over ice. There's usually a lot to do in the evenings, so we actually rarely watch movies.

9. Watch a simple natural phenomenon, like smoke or water in a stream or embers burning. I love to get lost in these things. When I first wrote it on my list, it just said, "watch something burn" which got James a little worried, I think. But seriously, have you ever laid down on a bridge over a creek or on the bank and watched the water dance over the rocks? It is incredibly beautiful. And it is free.

10. Go for a walk in the woods without a trail. It makes me sad that this has to be on the bottom of the list because I love to do this more than just about anything in the world. But I live in a small city. I feel like a trail takes a lot away from the experience because you aren't really in it, you know? When you go off-trail, you become much more aware of your surroundings. In a wonderful way.

(Bonus Entry: Rock out on-stage behind my viola bass guitar with a crowd of people dancing!!!)

James Gets Famous!

My husband James (who sometimes contributes here on my blog) is a musician. He has music here and here and even here and it's free. Well today, his stuff got reviewed on a pretty cool site. Here's what they had to say:

The three member band from Greenville named No Yes originally released the LP Goodbye, Strange Planet in 2008, but re-released back in October with alternate versions of some tracks. In addition to the title, the LP features songs entitled “All You Earthlings Look the Same,” “Androgynous World,” and “We are Aliens,” giving a true Science Fiction outside appearance. The music further supports that feeling.

James Noyes is responsible for the main vocals, but also plays a wide variety of other instruments on the LP. First on the second track (“Beam Me Up”), and later throughout the album, Lily Darger*, does backup vocals and the pair is comparable to Mates of State. Jake Xingu occasionally sings, but primarily plays the keyboard and drums. Additionally, other friends of the band harmonize on the LP.

James’ vocals are upbeat, cheerful, and very easy on the ears. The lyrics go along with the title of the LP and its tracks, concentrating on life in space/another planet and keeping the Science Fiction theme going. The background handclaps that are featured in many songs add to the cheery vibe.

All around, the music is playful and helps to create the imagery provided by the song titles and lyrics. It could be loosely described as Pop Punk. As the LP moves into the latter songs, the fast drums and guitar give off a more powerful sound, equivalent to old school punk rock. In some parts, it just sounds like a collection of noise, but quickly snaps back into the less cluttered music from the beginning.

A few personal favorites on the LP include “Hurtling Through Outer Space” and “Swimming the Cosmic Sea.” “Hurtling Through Outer Space” starts off with strong vocals that echo and remain catchy throughout the song. When you listen to it, you feel like you really are hurtling through outer space in some sort of space craft, making the song adventurous. “Swimming the Cosmic Sea” is a softer song, with multiple vocalists in the chorus, chanting “Come with us.” No Yes does not show this softer side often, but when they do, it gives a good break from the more fast paced music and blends pleasantly.

I'm awfully proud of his work. I know that if you give it a listen, you will LOVE what you hear! Make sure you let him know by leaving him some kind words on his blog!!!

*I am Lily Darger, but I had to change it in the text because everyone assumes that I have the same last name as my husband.
