Flashback 1994-1997: The Grind on MTV

The Grind was my life in the 90s. I always had the latest remixes due to this show.

I mean, if I was going to be gay in Murray, Ky; I needed the hottest dance music around. Plus, watching Eric Nies was a nice piece of the show too.

Coming Soon: MTV's True Life: I'm Trying to be Straight

I never thought I would see this True Life episode.

Here's the summary of this story:

What if you've expressed your sexuality in the same way for your entire adult life - but then decide to change your orientation completely? On this episode of True Life you'll meet two young people who once considered themselves gay. and now are doing everything they can to be straight.

Kevin cannot deny his sexual attraction to men, but has sworn off same sex relationships because of the pain it caused him and his devoutly religious family. Kevin believes that with the help of a therapist, supportive friends, and his own willpower he can redirect his urges and be embraced once more by his parents - and his church. Will Kevin control his impulses and achieve what he considers to be the more traditional American dream?

Melanie has always preferred dating girls - but ever since a violent confrontation with her disapproving mother, Melanie's been making drastic adjustments to her lifestyle. She's now juggling multiple heterosexual relationships - which is helping her reconnect with her once estranged family - even though she's suppressing deeply felt desires. Will Melanie ultimately give into temptation and risk losing everything again?

They're trying to find the path to inner peace. Have they reached self acceptance or are they simply in denial? Find out on True Life: I'm Trying to be Straight.

WATCH President Obama speak on DADT today at a MTV Town Hall event

This policy will end and it will end on my watch. But I do have an obligation to make sure that I’m following some of the rules. I can’t simply ignore laws that are out there, I’ve got to work to make sure that they are changed.

MTV is looking for more Minorities to Shame

MTV is truly trying to update the minstrel show aspect.

Now, they are looking for Persians, Asians and Russians to exploit.

"Looking for interesting, attractive, colorful Asian-Americans to cast in a reality show similar to 'Jersey Shore,' 'Real World,' 'The Hills,' etc. . ." the notice reads.

"We need attractive Asian-Americans with lively, strong and unique personalities between the ages of 18 to 30 with equally interesting life stories and perspectives to share, especially individuals who know about and/or experienced the Koreatown life."

Casting isn't limited strictly to Asian-Americans either.

"If you are not Asian but are obsessed with Asian culture or people in some way, email us and please explain," it said.

Jersey Shore may get Shut Down

Labeled as a modern day minstrel show, Jersey Shore, is getting heat from the NJ lawmakers!

The latest criticism comes from the New Jersey Italian American Legislative Caucus, which says the show promotes derogatory ethnic stereotypes and is "wildly offensive."

In a letter sent Tuesday to the president of Viacom, MTV's parent company, caucus chairman Joseph Vitale asks that the show be immediately taken off the air.

The state lawmakers also have asked advertisers to boycott the show, which focuses on eight tanned 20-somethings and their escapades in Seaside Heights, a popular New Jersey beach town.

On Wednesday, a Viacom spokesman referred a request for comment to an MTV spokesperson, who did not immediately respond. MTV has said its intention is not to stereotype or offend.

Wow, it's interesting how this show is getting hounded. I can't blame them, the show is horrible! I wonder if they will succeed with shutting it down.

UPDATE: Dell (computer peeps) has pulled their ads from the show.

First Buffy, now Teen Wolf

Teen Wolf is the latest of supernatural movies becoming TV shows. This one will be different of course, more serious, less comedy:
MTV has assembled the acting pack for "Teen Wolf," its reinvention of the 1985 movie.

Tyler Posey, Tyler Hoechlin, Crystal Reed and Dylan O'Brien have been cast in the pilot presentation penned by "Criminal Minds" creator Jeff Davis.

MTV's take on the film, which starred Michael J. Fox as a high-school student who discovers he is a werewolf, is a dramatic thriller with a buddy-comedy element at the center and a romantic plot line. It revolves around Scott McCall (Posey), a dorky high-school student who gets a rush of new powers, including the ability to attract girls, after a wolf attack.

I'm not sure about this one, but who knows. Today's tweens and teens are 10x as gullible than we were so this could be a hit.

But I will say, I loved the cartoon version.

MTV is finally making something of Quality

I knew I was crazy! Months ago, I wondered if Obama's victory would change TV. I began the post with "crazy talk time", but now I think I had a point.

The New York Times reports that MTV (of all networks) are flipping the script. For years, they cursed us with tired editions of Real World, the horrifying Road Rules and Real World challenge show, the god-awful rich kids messes. Now, they are actually bringing more positive social shows on their network.

Last fall, after the financial crisis erupted but before the presidential election, MTV executives gathered in New York for meetings to discuss the direction of the network and whether programs like “The Hills,” which chronicles the lives of the young and rich in Los Angeles, and “My Super Sweet 16,” a weekly visit to over-the-top coming-out parties, had trapped MTV in a decadent age that was passing.

The talk wasn’t just academic. While MTV may still be a cultural touchstone for America’s youth, its ratings are down considerably from earlier this decade.

Executives looked at in-house research and the work of William Strauss, a generational expert who gave a presentation to MTV executives last fall, and saw that the country’s young were deeply engaged in the election and becoming more civic-minded.

One point of discussion at the meetings was whether shows about rich young girls were still relevant.

“It was very clear we were at one of those transformational moments, when this new generation of millennials were demanding a new MTV,” said Stephen Friedman, MTV’s general manager, using the term for those born between 1980 and 2000.

In the era that was passing, Mr. Friedman said, “the humor was more cynical, the idea of community seemed earnest and not cool. It’s the opposite now.”

As a result, a new reality program, “T.I.’s Road to Redemption,” shows a troubled rapper helping keep children on the straight and narrow. Nick Lachey, the former boy band star who was married to Jessica Simpson, his co-star on the MTV program “Newlyweds,” is producing “Taking the Stage,” a reality show about a performing arts school in Cincinnati. A finishing school show, “From G’s to Gents,” tries to transform homeboys into gentlemen — or at least get them to cover their tattoos — with the help of Fonzworth Bentley, who was Sean Combs’s valet.

They will keep some of their silly rich shows, but MTV is finally getting the word that reality, should be realistic. I am glad that they are realizing this, perhaps MTV will be watchable again within the next year.

True Life...MTV continues their destruction of the Youth

As economy woes act as the 40 day flood to the TV networks, MTV has scaled back their spending and moved towards more and cheaper reality shows.

RADAR reports

"These new series reflect Generation 'Why Not?' -- living, working and playing on their own terms, 'adventure capitalists' if you will, pursuing a variety of thrill-seeking, 2.0, express-yourself enterprises," said Brian Graden, president of entertainment at MTV Networks Music Group.

We're not entirely sure what that means, but here's what they have in the gate:

College Life, about freshman at the University of Wisconsin. Can you say beer parties?

Nitro Circus, with freestyle motocross star Travis Pastrana and his posse.

The CollegeHumor Show, set in the offices of the twentysomething-run website CollegeHumor.com.

How's Your News? which was first seen ten years ago as a series of short films directed by Arthur Bradford. This one's about news reporters who have disabilities.

Rob Dyrdek's Fantasy Factory, with the co-star of MTV's Rob & Big, who is trying to grow his skateboarding business via the Fantasy Factory, a 25,000-square-foot warehouse that is transformed into a play house.

Daddy's Girls, with Rev Run's daughters Vanessa and Angela Simmons of Run's House. In this outing, they move to Los Angeles and open a store to sell their apparel line while Vanessa tries to make it as an actor.

The Girls of Hedsor Hall, inspired by the British Ladette to Lady, about a dozen foul-mouthed party girls who go to finishing school. Former Miss USA Tara Conner will be the "visiting instructor" and the winner gets $100,000.

An untitled reality show which follows students of Cincinnati's School for the Creative and Performing Arts.

A little more diverse than their past mess, but still, possibly...mess. And I hope they stop making the Real World, if I want to see amateur porn I'll go to Xtube.

Because no one cares or watches...

MTV's countdown mess: "Total Request Live" will soon shut down after 10 years on the air.

In a statement, my former crush, Eminem said: "I'm going to miss `TRL.' ... Where else will I be able to start feuds, defend my honor vigorously and act like an angry teenager on national TV? Oh wait ... The VMAs!"

Why Kayne West will never win a VMA

I just happened to see the VMAs and realized, it's changed. It was chaotic and weird. Besides giving Britney awards for a failed album and a failed video, Kayne lost his damn mind!

Look at this foolishness

That performance was crap!!

Send MTV to the Phantom Zone, NOW!

Lets face it, MTV sucks! I mean really sucks! They always find a new way to perpetuate stereotypes, degrade people, and make entitled folks feel overly...entitled. Now they have done it with this new stew of mess.

They just announced a new show called Model Makers, which follows the tired format of finding the next model but here's the catch: they have to shed at least 30 pounds in exchange for a shot at fame.

So the more weight they lose, they have a better shot in winning a silly contact that guarantees them nothing. I don't know who's creating this stuff, but I feel they literally trying to f**k up our society. We should build up our young girls not tear them down with tricky model/weight loss malarkey. Will this show have healthy tips on eating? Are life coaches around? Will there be bitchy judges to make these girls feel horrible?

We'll see, but I hope this show promote self worth and not self indulgence.

Frak You, MTV!

MTV is making a huge mistake, as usual. Awhile ago, I talked how MTV planned on remaking The Rocky Horror Picture Show.

Well the writer and Divo Mega, Richard O'Brien had this to say:

"I have no view on whether it should be remade but it doesn't have my blessing,"
"I don't know where they'll go with it really.

I've even heard that they're going to put new songs in.

I wrote the book, the music and the lyrics.

Where are they going to get the songs from? Who's going to do that? That's a bit strange isn't it?"

It is strange, after the f**ked up Carmen with Beyonce, MTV should have been banned from movie making. Time for a boycott.
