Children hostages freed in French school

Well no bullet in the head, at least the kids are O.K.

Washington post
PARIS -- Masked French gendarmes detained a 17-year-old who took a class full of preschoolers hostage Monday, releasing all the children safely after hours of tense negotiations that drew nationwide attention.

"The hostage-taking is over," Jean-Marc Magda, aide to the mayor of the eastern French city of Besancon, told The Associated Press by telephone. All 20 children who had been taken hostage and their teacher were released safely, he said.

The hostage-taker was detained, and remained inside the school with officers from a specialist gendarme force brought in to deal with the situation, Magda said.

It is a messed up world.
I don't know and don't really care what this asswipes problem is, I hope they put a bullet in his head.

The teenager, carrying at least one sword, initially took 20 children hostage at the kindergarten in Besancon at 9am (8am GMT) but released most of them about an hour later, officials said.

"Around 14 children have come out and at the moment there are five or six still inside," Besancon's mayor, Jean-Louis Fousseret, told France Info radio.

The children being held are aged between four and five. Their teacher and a classroom assistant are also being held.

SAS defy orders and rescue captured comrades

I can't believe that SAS commanders in Iraq had to disobey orders from the brass back home in order to save two of their soldiers. Insane...absolutely insane. Daily Mail

The SAS launched a daring mission to rescue two of its own men held hostage in Iraq against the orders of the Ministry of Defence, the Daily Mail can reveal.

The elite unit was pushed to the brink of mutiny after it was banned from saving the SAS soldiers captured by militants because to do so would embarrass the Government.

The astonishing edict drove SAS officers close to mass resignation, according to a hardhitting report by the Tory MP Adam Holloway, a former Guards officer.

Iran holding Osama bin Laden family members?

From al Jazeera:

Iranian authorities are holding several family members of Osama bin Laden, according to Abdul Rahman bin Laden, the al-Qaeda leader's second son.

In an interview published on Al Jazeera Arabic's website on Monday, Abdul Rahman bin Laden said that Eman, his sister, one of his stepmothers and five of his brothers have been detained in Tehran since 1997

He alleged that his sister had managed to escape several weeks ago while on a shopping tour permitted by authorities every six months. She has since taken refuge in the Saudi Arabian embassy.

Abdul Rahman bin Laden said that he had been unaware whether his relatives were alive until Eman contacted him a month ago. He then told her to go to the Saudi embassy. He told Al Jazeera that he was concerned for his sister's health and he called on Tehran to release his relatives. He also called for the Saudi government to ensure his sister's departure from the country.

Hussein Shobokshi, a columnist for the Saudi-owned newspaper Asharq Alawsat, told Al Jazeera that the discovery Iran was holding members of bin Laden's family was consistent with reports "that Iran has been able to infiltrate al-Qaeda operations".

"They have been hosting key figures in the leadership structure of al-Qaeda for some time and they have been co-operating visibly with them in Iraq, Yemen and Somalia amongst other places," he said. (Ed. note: Meanwhile, the world turns a blind eye to this soon to go nuclear state sponsor of terror.)

But Abdul Rahman bin Laden cited poor relations between Saudi Arabia and Iran for the reason no agreement had been reached over freeing his relatives. "My siblings are innocent and have nothing to do with other people's disputes with our father," he said.

Abdul Rahman bin Laden and his siblings are the children of the al-Qaeda leader's first wife.

"Fatima, Sa'ad, Omar, Mohammed, Osman and Abdul Rahman Osama arranged for his first daughter, Fatima, to be married to a Saudi fighter at age 12. Her husband died in the American attacks on Afghanistan two years later."

According to this report, Abdul Rahman bin Laden "found it difficult to regain Saudi nationality after it was revoked and now lives quietly in Syria".

Remember Sabi - the bomb sniffing dog gone MIA in Afghanistan?

Sabi the miracle dog It looks like there's more to her story:

From the Daily Mail:

An Australian bomb-sniffing dog lost and then found in Afghanistan had been 'adopted' by a Taliban leader who tried to trade her for money. Sabi the black Labrador hit the headlines when she was discovered miraculously after going missing in action for 14 months. The dog's recovery was announced by the Australian Defence Force on November 11, the day Prime Minister Kevin Rudd visited Australian troops at their base in Tarin Kowt, in Oruzgan Province.

The story was that she was recovered by a U.S. special forces soldier called 'John', who retrieved her from an unnamed man in an unnamed part of north-eastern Oruzgan. 'John' was said to have thanked the man and shaken his hand, as the dog had obviously been well looked after.

But when tribal elders heard of Sabi's meeting with the Prime Minister, they started filling in some of the gaps.

They told Martine van Bijlert, a Kabul-based political analyst and former Dutch diplomat, that Sabi ended up in the hands of Mullah Hamdullah, a minor Taliban leader in Khas Oruzgan district. Hamdullah was very proud of the dog and showed her around everywhere, according to elders' accounts.

But the Australians wanted their dog back. When Hamdullah's father was arrested, they made it known that they would do a dad-for-dog swap. Hamdullah didn't think it was a fair trade and refused. Eventually the foreign troops let the older man go, while Sabi remained in Taliban hands.

When Hamdullah tired of the dog he sent a local elder to a nearby military base to do a dog-for-dollars deal. Since the Australians don't have a base in Khas Oruzgan, the negotiations appear to have been conducted with Americans.

British racing crew held in Iran identified.

They may have 'inadvertently strayed' into Iranian waters after experiencing mechanical difficulty - by 500 yards.

From the Daily Mail:

It appears that the high-tech yacht was swept towards Iran by strong winds after its propeller was damaged. The crew were named as Sam Usher, Olly Smith, Luke Porter and Oliver Young - and David Bloomer, who works as a radio presenter in Bahrain.

British racing yacht capture

Meanwhile, behind the scenes the Brit Diplowads are furious. Clearly, they were planning on doing a Lockerbie Bomber and cutting a double secret deal. Sonsabi&ches.

Diplomats say they have been in 'indirect contact' with the hostages and that they are confident they are being well treated. Privately the officials are furious that the news broke. They had hoped to keep the incident secret in order to avoid a new diplomatic incident with Iran.

Iran confiscates racing yacht and British racing crew.

Sail bahrain They were evidently on the way to the Dubai Muscat race.

According to the Daily Mail:

"Members of Sail Bahrain were due to arrive in Dubai on November 26 on board the Kingdom of Bahrain race yacht.

The site says: 'Skippering the Kingdom of Bahrain entry is experienced offshore sailor and Team Director of Sail Bahrain, Nick Crabtree who, along with members of his shore crew, will be joined by Bahrain’s national sailing hero, Sami Kooheji and Captain Peter Gronberg, Managing Director of GAC, one of the largest shipping companies in the region and logistics partner to Sail Bahrain.'

So far the Foreign Office has refused to name any of the crew members being held.

Quiet diplomacy isn't working - and the Brits are having trouble getting their calls returned. Looks like the Iranians are up to their old tricks.

From Sky News:

Five British sailors on a racing yacht have been detained by Iran after they may have inadvertently strayed into its waters.

The vessel, owned by Sail Bahrain and crewed by the British nationals, was stopped by Iranian naval vessels last Wednesday, said the Foreign Office.

The five are still in Iran and all are understood to be safe and well.

Their families have been informed of the incident. The yacht was on its way from Bahrain to Dubai and may have strayed inadvertently into Iranian waters.

Foreign Secretary David Miliband said UK officials "immediately contacted the Iranian authorities in London and in Tehran on 25 November, both to seek clarification and to try and resolve the matter swiftly". He added: "Our ambassador in Tehran has raised the issue with the Iranian Foreign Ministry and we have discussed the matter with the Iranian Embassy in London. "I hope this issue will soon be resolved. We will remain in close touch with the Iranian authorities, as well as the families."

Sky News foreign affairs editor Tim Marshall said: "The Foreign Office has tried to get these people out through quiet diplomacy, and they had some problems. "The Iranians are being hard to contact - and it has been the festival of Eid.

"The actual festival has finished but it's a little bit like the extended Christmas holidays in the Christian calendar and government can shut down for up to 6-10 days.

"The Foreign Office has had problems contacting the right people at the right level."

Amanda Lindhout and Nigel Brenan released!

Finally some good news. The hell that Amanda and Nigel had to endure for 16 months is over.

It seems like $1 million was handed over to al Shabaab for Amanda and Nigel's release. Although I'm happy that Amanda and Nigel are finally free again, paying terrorists ransom will only encourage further kidnappings in the future.

From Canada.com

"I was released about four or five hours ago. We were released in Mogadishu. But the how's of that are better to wait, because my mom has advised me not to say anything about anything because we're surrounded now by armed soldiers that are in place to keep Nigel and I safe. But the country is really dangerous, so until I'm out of the country I just don't think it's a good idea to say anything.

Somali residents fight pirates who are holding British couple captive

Somali residents of a central village, where islamic pirates where holding a British couple hostage, chased the pirates out of their village.

Nice to see Somali resident rising up against the islamic pirates. Too bad they couldn't save the British couple. Garowe Online

Residents of central Somali village of Bahdo in Galgudud, some 125-miles northeast of the notorious pirate haven of Haradheere, have reportedly clashed with Somali pirates holding a UK couple.

The residents were angered by the pirates’ decision to hold the hostages in their locality, prompting them to take arms against the sea gangs.

According to locals, the villagers urged the pirates to leave the area but they refused, leading to eruption of an all out war between the armed residents and pirates in which three people, two of them pirates are reportedly killed.

“We can’t allow our town to be used as hideout where hostages are kept. We defeated the pirates and they fled the area, taking with them the two hostages,” said the village’s administrator.

A real tragedy: Amanda Lindhout and Nigel Brenan still held captive

Compared to Rusty's post, this is a real tragedy. Canadian journalist Amanda Lindhout and Australian photojournalist Nigel Brenan have been held captive by al Shabaab for over 14 months. Initally, al Shabaab demanded $2.5 million for their release but since then have lowered their demands down to $100,000.

Lindhout and Brenan have recently been moved from Mogadishu to a remote location some 120 km south of Somalia's captital. Al Shabaab feared that Canadian authorities were tracking the whereabouts of Amanda and Nigel.

Al Shabaab have seriously mistreated their hostages to say the least. It has been reported that Amanda Lindhout was impregnated after being raped multiple times. To add insult to injury the terrorists named Amanda's baby Osama.

Now this is a real tragedy. I pray for the safety and well being of Amanda and Nigel and for them to return safely home to their families.

Terrorists traded for captured Canadian diplomats

In a report released this past weekend, it seems that two Canadian diplomats who were held hostage by al Qaida in Mali in 2008 were released in exchange for 4 captured terrorists and an unspecified amount of money.

While I'm glad that the two Canadian diplomats are free, exchanging hostages for captured terrorists and or money will only encourage more hostage taking. Canada.com

The freedom of two Canadian diplomats taken hostage in Africa was secured earlier this year in exchange for four terrorists as well as a cash payment, according to a report published Saturday.

The Globe and Mail reported that diplomats Robert Fowler and Luis Guay were released from captivity in Mali after four members of al-Qaida were set free.

The newspaper report cited high-ranking government sources in Mali and said that one of the four released terrorists was a bomb-maker.[...]

After his release, Fowler stirred up an political storm by suggesting a UN employee or the Niger government betrayed him and ``shopped'' him to his kidnappers.

Fowler also told CBC at the time that his captors "got something" in exchange for his release.

"I didn't get out because I was a nice guy. They are not in the business of humanitarian gestures," he said. "But beyond that, who did what, how, where and for whom, I don't know."

Pakistan commandos rescue 39 hostages, three killed

Well that leaves the Taliban a little less to barter with !
What is taking Pakistan so long to finish off the Taliban ?
The longer they put it off the stronger and more hidden the Taliban become !
Maybe they are giving them the chance to surrender , Or escape .

RAWALPINDI, Pakistan (Reuters) - Pakistani commandos stormed an office building on Sunday and rescued 39 people taken hostage by suspected Taliban militants after a brazen attack on the army's headquarters.

Saturday's attack on the tightly guarded army headquarters in the city of Rawalpindi, next door to the capital, Islamabad, came as the military prepared an offensive against the militants in their stronghold of South Waziristan on the Afghan border.

The strike at the heart of the powerful military called into question government assertions the militants were virtually crippled by recent setbacks. But officials said it only underlined the need to finish them off.

"It has been decided, the civilian leadership has decided ... the operation is imminent," Interior Minister Rehman Malik told Reuters in an interview in Singapore.

Three hostages, two commandos and four of the gunmen were killed in the pre-dawn rescue operation, said army spokesman Major General Athar Abbas. One wounded gunman was captured and Abbas said he was the ringleader.

"Now there is no terrorist left there. The operation is over," Abbas told Reuters.

Al Shabaab sets terms for release of French hostage

Al Shabaab has set very unrealistic terms for the release of the French hostage. Things don't look promising for him. Bloomberg

Sept. 17 (Bloomberg) -- Somalia’s Islamist al-Shabaab group set new conditions for the release of a French security adviser it has been holding since July.

The adviser and a colleague were abducted on July 14 in the capital, Mogadishu, where al-Shabaab and Hisb-ul-Islam in May began an offensive to seize control from forces loyal to President Sheikh Sharif Sheikh Ahmed.[...]

Al-Shabaab today demanded that France end its military and political support for Somalia’s transitional government and withdraw all its security advisers from the country and its ships from Somali waters, according to a statement by the group released in the capital, Mogadishu. It also demanded the withdrawal of all peacekeeping forces from the African Union Mission in Somalia, known as Amisom.

PAKISTAN and VANCOUVER — Taliban insurgents active in Pakistan's lawless tribal region have offered to free a Canadian woman held since November in return for a $375,000 (U.S.) ransom.

The demand came in an interview near the Pakistan-Afghanistan border with Qari, a man who preferred to identify himself only by his first name.

Qari says he's a close aide of Gul Bahadur, the Taliban head in the volatile North Waziristan region who is alleged to be responsible for the kidnapping of Beverly Giesbrecht, a West Vancouver woman who was in the area working as a freelance journalist.

Ms. Giesbrecht, 52, also goes by the name, Khadija Abdul Qahaar, after converting to Islam in 2002. She is the publisher of a pro-Islamic website, Jihad Unspun.

MULTAN, Pakistan (Reuters) - Pakistani authorities have identified the kidnappers of an American working for the U.N. refugee agency but want to avoid any hasty action that may endanger him, the country's foreign minister said.

It was not the first deadline Solecki's captors had given.

North Africa Qaeda posts photos of Western hostages

This group of Al Qaeda newbies , has been in the news a lot lately , it sounds like they are really trying to get a bigger name for themselves !
If that is the case then it does not look good for the Hostages they hold !
Killing these people , would be a quick way to get more recognition .

DUBAI (Reuters) - Al Qaeda's wing in North Africa published photographs on the Internet on Thursday of four of six Western hostages it says it has in its custody.

Earlier this week al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb claimed in an audio tape aired on Arabic broadcaster Al Jazeera that it had a Canadian U.N. envoy and his aide and four Western tourists who were kidnapped in the West African Sahara in December.

A posting on Islamist websites on Thursday showed three separate images of what it said were a Swiss couple, a German woman and a British man, surrounded by men bearing rifles.

In the photographs the women's faces have been blurred.

An accompanying statement reiterated comments by a spokesman in the audio tape saying they "reserved the right to deal with the six captives under Islamic sharia (law)" -- an apparent threat they might be killed if demands are not met -- and would issue conditions soon for the release of the hostages.
....

Niger's President Mamadou Tandja said last month investigations indicated "terrorists" had kidnapped Canadian U.N. envoy Robert Fowler and his aide Louis Guay who went missing in the country in December.

A senior Malian military source involved in investigating the kidnapping of the four tourists in northern Mali said the al Qaeda-linked group was most likely to be holding them.

Malian officials initially blamed Tuareg rebels for abducting the two Swiss nationals, one German and one Briton near Mali's border with Niger in January.

Al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb, formerly known as the Salafist Group for Preaching and Combat (GSPC), has claimed a series of attacks in the region in recent years, including the kidnapping last year of two Austrian tourists abducted in Tunisia who were later freed in Mali.

Pirates threaten to scrap ransom deal

The only payment the islamic pirates should receive is a couple of bullets to the back of the head. Dawn

MOGADISHU, Dec 7: Somali pirates holding an arms-laden Ukrainian cargo ship on Sunday accused the owners of stalling on a ransom payment and threatened to pull out of a deal for its release struck a week ago.
[...]

A pirate spokesman told AFP that the armed gang holding the Faina was unhappy about the delay in the ransom payment.

“The ship’s owners are taking too long to hand over the money,” the spokesman, identifying himself only as Ahmed, said. “There have been consultations between the force on the ground and on the ship and everyone agreed that if the money is not delivered on time, to abandon the agreement,” he added.

Elders in the area, who did not wish to be named, said a ransom of $3.5 million had been agreed for the ship, carrying 33 Soviet-type battle tanks, rocket launchers and ammunition when it was seized off Somalia two months ago.

Hostages and bodies trickle out of Hotels in Mumbai

Indian commandos are still trying to free an unspecified number of hostages held by terrorists in several luxury hotels in Mumbai, India. The Indian Prime Minister has accused external forces for orchestrating the attacks. He is probably either referring to either the ISI, the Pakistani secret service, or al Qaida.

Hopefully the commandos are successful in rescuing the hostages and killing all of the remaining terrorists. The hostages are in my prayers. Globe & Mail

MUMBAI — A trickle of bodies and hostages emerged from a luxury hotel Thursday as Indian commandos tried to free people trapped by suspected Muslim militants who attacked at least 10 targets in India's financial capital of Mumbai, killing 104 people.

More than 300 were also wounded in the highly co-ordinated attacks Wednesday night by bands of gunmen who invaded two five star hotels, a popular restaurant, a crowded train station, a Jewish centre and at least five other sites, armed with assault rifles, hand grenades and explosives.

Indian officials confirmed that Canadians were among the hostages held by suspected Muslim militants.

State's Deputy Home Secretary Bitin Srimali said foreigners being held captive include Canadians, Americans, British, Italians, Swedes, Yemenis, New Zealanders, Spaniards, Turks, a Singaporean and Israelis.
