Challenge #15.- The Quirky Silk Road.- Reminder

Hi Quirky friends!!! It´s Monica here, to remind you about our Quirky Challenge.

The Quirky Silk Road

It´s a challenge where any project is allowed, but Oriental theme. Just show us the treasures and wisdom of Orient cultures: China, Japan, India, Korea, etc..

This challenge is sponsored by:

The prizes for this challenge are:

1st place everything in this photo (stamps, ribbon, buttons) from That Craft Place

2nd place: 3 images from Squigglefly
3rd place: 2 images from The East Wind

And now the Design Team:
Lyn

Remember last weeks creation? I'd run out of all my ice grey Promarkers and didn't have enough colour to 3D her. Well here she is again, but this time finished! I've 3D-ed her hair (My Promarkers arrived!!) and changed the colour of her book, (here's about five layers in all) and added a little tag, loads of stickles glitter and a few peel-offs, coins and fans, which I really think do make a difference.

My second card will be along in a little while...it's a cute cat!!
And here it is!! (added Tues 29th July)

This time I used Mewshu Pork cat from Squigglefly
I've also added one of their sentiments too.I've 3D-ed the little kitten and added him to papers from a crafting magazine. (Link to freebie download on my blog) The peel-offs look like brads. I fixed them to paper I'd coloured with a matching Promarker colour and used silicone glue to add to the card so they pop out a little.

Cindy

Isn't this little guy adorable?  The background is made of a napkin and the kitty image is called Tuxedo Sleeping Cat by Unky.

 Monica

Once I had promised Unky, The East Wind owner and designer, that I will make one of her lovely digis in a vinyl project. Well, here it is.

For this project I used this stunning digi "Kigsen mon amour Korean hanbok". It wasn`t easy to "weed" (clean vinyl process) because all the lovely digis details. I spend almost 3 hours weeding, but I love how it turned out. It's height is 7 inches and I applied it to a Chinese dish I bought on Costa Rica Chinatown.

For my second project, I made a shaped card using the digi "China characters: Beautiful" provided by our sponsor Squigglefly. To embellish the card I made an origami kimono doll.
You can find a tutorial to make the origami doll here.

Cazzy

For my first reminder card I used Lucy Loo Fire Dancer from The East Wind. I printed her in two sizes and this was the largest, she is still very intricate to colour and I think she needs to be bigger still!
I coloured her with Promarkers, added a bit of Spica pen to the flames for sparkle then rough cut her out to go on the dark background. The paper is more (other side of red double sided) Papermania, and so are the stickers.

For this masculine birthday card I used Junk Boat from Squigglefly with Chinese Happy Birthday from Squigglefly also. Both are coloured with Promarkers and I added a few waves with a white Prismacolor pencil.
I die cut the Junk Boat after marking the part that came outside the die which I cut around manually afterwards.
Paper is Papermania, and it has a slightly metallic sheen. The sentiment is not straight but the Affixit tape is so instantly permanent that I daren't try and peel it off to straighten it! I added a Chinese coin charm, might be Woodware.

Challenge #15.-The Quirky Silk Road

"The Silk Road is the world's oldest, and most historically important overland trade route.
For over 2000 years, traders and merchants travelled the deserts of central Asia exchanging goods between the Chinese empire and the rest of the world."

To get some inspiration, you can watch this video:

It´s my turn -Monica- to set the challenge and I want you to travel the ancient Silk Road and bring projects full of the beauty, colors, textures and sounds of Orient. It´s a challenge where any project is allowed, but Oriental theme. Just show us the treasures and wisdom of Orient cultures: China, Japan, India, Korea, etc...

Our sponsors for this new challenge are:

The prizes for this challenge are:

1st place:

From That Craft Place

2nd place: 3 images from Squigglefly

3rd place: 2 images from The East Wind

Some beautiful projects from our Guest Designers:

Papersniffer

I paper pieced the digi (Chinese Beautiful from Squigglefly) with patterned papers and added Glossy Accents to the character, then layered up up with various papers, mostly Papermania, but one is a gorgeous, textured one with a glorious shimmer.  The tag and corner elements are also Papermania.  To embellish, I added some black organza ribbon, a bow, black pearls, and a flower that I made with my Tim Holtz Tattered Florals dies.

And now the Design Team:

For this fan card I used the stunning "Chinese Dancer" digi from The East Wind and this lovely chinese sentiment "Happy Birthday" from Squigglefly.
I used a lot of red because it represents good fortune and joy in Chinese culture. It is use in Chinese New Year and other holidays and family gatherings.
The Chinese calligraphy for the word "fan" has the same sound as the character of "kindness" or "good". So fans are viewed as good luck charms and expressions of generosity.
I love all the richness behind Orient cultures.

I love this little Mewshu Pork cat from Squigglefly and thought it went perfectly with the Chinese Thank You also from Squigglefly. I found some Han-ji oriental paper to go with the theme. I added a gold double tassled cord to finish. (Note to self: check which way the card opens before sticking on cat and greeting next time!).

I love this Unky image called Lucy Loo Bookaholic - just look at all that hair, how long it must be! Normally I would keep the sponsors apart but the Chinese Proverb from Squigglefly went so perfectly with this image! Papermania papers, Crafty Ribbons ribbon.

Lyn
Here's my card (at last!) Not having my glasses set me back a bit! I've used the Unky image called Lucy Loo Bookaholic too. I was going to 3D her, but every one of my 'Ice Grey' Promarkers has run dry. So, I'll show her as she is for now and with any luck, show her again later with all her other bits added! At the moment the only bit that's been 3D-ed is the book. The papers I used were freebies from Cardmaking & PaperCraft Magazine sometime ago. The punched out Chinese word I think might mean Happiness or Blessings. And I apologise if it's the wrong way round!

- Poor Cindy - she has the flu and managed to send this gorgeous project to Cazzy to put on, before going back to her sick bed. We hope she gets well soon.
Cindy used the gorgeous Ghetto Fabulous Ashley from The East Wind, and that looks like real silk behind her. The sentiment is from a set called Circle Quotes Set from Squigglefly.
Just look at this fabulous printer tray, what a gorgeous thing to have! Lots of  Chinese ephemera used here.

First a few from our Guest Designers

Jessi said "I used dies & punches to create a bit of a decorative swag under the image. The bottom layer is snowflakes stamped & embossed on diecut vellum, and then I've added punched branches. The centrepiece is a big loopy twine bow sewn into place with some bells to finish off. "

And some from our Designers....
XXX

Stichy Bear gave me Arctic Fox to play with and I know my mom will love this one!  This little guy cried out for an elegant home and so that's what she got!  More details of how he come together is on my blog...

I was going to show you another bunny card, but he hopped off before I could take his picture! Instead I've used 'Four Calling Birds' coloured them in a mixture of computer colours and Promarkers and then added punched out Holly and berries as well as some punched out and embossed leaves. I've used a corner punch to round off the corners and a peel off, which is a die cut of sorts, saying Happy Christmas and covered it with stickles glitter glue. The holly paper was a freebie from a magazine.

Inside I've used a  die-cut and added a stamped Happy Christmas message. And to make the lip in the money pocket I used a punch. Papers are from my stash.

Santa is getting ready for Christmas!!!!!
For this project, I made a window shadow box card, with this lovely "Sweet Santa" digi provided by our sponsor, Stichy Bear.
All the card was cut with a cutting file (as a die cut) and this cute Santa was colored with Spectrum Noir pens.
Here a closer look of the Sweet Santa.

Cazzy
I used Ike's Art Cracka Cat on this card, coloured with Promarkers, and the panels and paper are all die cut, I added some die cut holly leaves and berries too. It seems I have a cat thing goin on right now! Ribbon is from Crafty Ribbons.

Actually this is  just one of 4 variations I am making, I will add the rest later - I ran out of time!

Here we go, cat is now Siamese!

This cat was supposed to be a tabby, not sure it worked!

Black and white cat?

Jessi

Jessi said: "I've included both  the full & closeup pictures of my first card, using Bunny in Stocking. The stocking has red & white Fun Flock to make it extra soft & fuzzy :)"

Shell used Sweet Santa on her lovely traditional card, and lots of die cuts. Here are the dies Shell used:
*Spellbinder die - Santa image
*La La Land Craft -Banner die
*Memory Box - Holly & Leaves die

and a few more by our design team...

MONICA

For my Christmas project, I used this gorgeous digi Star of The Bethlehem provided by our generous sponsor Stichy Bear Stamps. I used a cut file for the card and for Bethlehem´s Star. I colored the digi with Spectrum Noir pens and use liquid pearls for Mary`s tunic border.

This how this card looks when is ligthed.

CINDY
I used the Christmas Stocking Doodle  image for my two projects this week.

My first one uses washi tapes, ribbon and paper strips as the background to make a quick and simple background.
My second card is following a sketch and mixing elements.
Check out my blog for more details on construction!

Cazzy

As soon as I saw Ike's Art Bauble Cat I thought of the idea of making the bauble cat into a bauble too, but my attempt at "lights" for shine have failed miserably and look like dirty patches that I forgot to colour. I used Spellbinders dies to cut the paper panel, bauble and poinsettia and a Martha Stewart punch to make the pine branch. Papers are some old DCWV ones, and the ribbon is from Crafty RibbonsI added a few flat back pearls to the centre of the poinsettia. The bauble and cat are coloured with Promarkers and I added some sparkly Mod Podge over the top. I am already working on another version, this time a Siamese cat!

Inside I die cut two panels from the paper and a smaller bauble in white to write on.

Update: I told you I wasn't happy with my card, so here is one I am very happy to show you just finished a day later.
Same as the first card except I used a different bauble die, kept it all one colour and two shades of blue. This time I made the cat Siamese. I added one extra die cut layer in gold too.

Lyn
Here's my Christmas Card for the challenge. I've used Bunny in Stocking from Delicious Doodles. Isn't he just the cutest bunny ever!?! I've used a Christmas collection paper pack by Kate Knight. Printed out bunny over some of these papers so his stocking is paper pieced, then 3D-ed his head and paws and coloured with Promarkers and fixed him onto a diecut by Darice. There's also punched out silver snowflakes with gems, a crinkly ribbon over a ric rac ribbon, plus a stocking charm and loads of glitter!
Inside I've used a Spellbinder die cuts and added the bunny printed from the bits I had over!

Come and join in! I can't wait to see what you come up with!
