Challenge #11 2013, Black and White with a tiny amount of your favorite color (color for the USA).

Hi, it is my turn again (Doris). Welcome to another Quirky Challenge, this time using Black and White colors, with a small amount of your favorite color.

Now for some examples by the team, and first of all I would like to introduce you to our two new team members, who applied for the 2 month Guest Designer position via the page set up for applications, (see the tab at the top if you would like to apply).

My name is Margaret (I prefer to be called Marg), and Im a 51 year old disabled single parent to 2 gorgeous daughters but only the 16 year old, Tia, now lives at home (my eldest, Steph, is very happily married with 2 lovely sons).
I have always been arty/crafty & used to sew so much, when I wasnt sewing I was drawing, then I went onto cross stitch but my eyes & dexterity started to go so I needed another outlet. That came in the form of card making through my eldest sister. She gave me some of her stock and that was it, I was hooked! A few months later I was told I had to finish work as my walking sticks were an issue for health & safety regulations. I later realised that I could have sued, but it was too late. I was then in need of therapy, something to do everyday, with my hands and mind, that would stop me getting depressed even more than I already was. I have not looked back since - card making is my life now and Ive done fairly well with commission orders & my family/friends who have received one or more of my cards.

Well, first of all I should start by saying that I am from one of the beautiful countries of Central America, Costa Rica. I am so proud to live in a country like this. The climate, the mountains, the people are all the perfect elements to enjoy this blessed land. I was born in October 18th 1968. I grew up In Alajuela, called the city of the Mangos. Now I live in Heredia. called the city of the flowers. I am atonery at law, I work in San José, our Capital City. I am mother of two kids, Sofia 20 years old and Joaquín 15 years old. I love paper crafting, this where I found relax to fight my every day stress.

Joyce made a mountain sidestep mountain valley card featuring the Dragon's nest digi from Limited Runs.

Lucy said: I doodled the green and black “stitching” and coloured parts of the owl in with green copics then glittered him for a sparkly, fluffy look. The green leaves are from my company, Flourish with a Bling.
(Note to entrants, this is too much of the accent colour, you need to use less if you want to win.)

Marg

My project for this challenge is made using the Mushrooms 7 image from Limited Runs Digital Stamps.
I wanted to make something different from a standard card so I thought about a box shaped card. I used a piece of string mesh stuck on to alternate folds. On the other alternate folds I used pearlescent paper die cut with a Memory Box die. On top of these "backing" pieces I added die cut leaves.The images of the mushrooms, were coloured using Promarkers.
The last thing I added was 4 identical pieces of black grosgrain ribbon so the card could be fastened into a rectangle "box". For more details see my blog.

Monica

Monica said: I called it "I Believe in Magic" accordingly to the Dragon´s Nest digi. I made a carousel card, mixing different black and white patterned papers. I used a little bit of green in their eyes to add some light to my black and white dragons.When the card opens it shows a beautiful and hopeful  message: "Always believe that something wonderful is about to happen". This should be our motto every day.

I've used this cute little Owl from one of our sponsors, Limited Runs Whootie Owl and on the inside I couldn't help but use an old favourite Madison with her axe! The papers are from Dovecraft's 'A Hint of Pink' by Kate Knight. Inside I've added a little envelope to hide some birthday money. The feather has been waiting ages for me to use and this just seemed to be the right time! I've also added 5 brads, 3 gems, 2 buttons, some black mess, eye-lash wool and a row of sequins! Sorry I'm late, busy weekend! Here is my card using Graduation Cupcake from Limited Runs. The image is coloured with Promarkers, and I added my accent colour to the tassel and hat, and edge of the die cut, 4 pearls and a real tassle to match. I used matt medium on the icing, I don't think it shows up here.

Doris

For my project today, I thought about something different than a card, so I worked this beautiful one handbag. To do it, I used an SVG cutting file , and I decorated it with this beautiful image of Owl-Theo, courtesy of our sponsor Limited Runs. I add a little detail in red, glitter in black and ready. Enjoy de challenge, and please remember, add just a tiny amount of your favorite colour.

Firstly I'd like to apologise for my over-use of pink here, I know the challenge rules said only a small amount of colour... I just got carried away! I used the Whootie Owl image from Limited Runs and I embellished her with doodles, before sticking onto my painty patterned background. I'm going to post a full tutorial on my blog later, so stay tuned!

Reminder Post for Myth and Magic and Must use paint (the 3 Ms)

Here is the other side of the door hanger, featuring Serpent and Submarine stamps from Crackerbox Palace.

The images are coloured with Promarkers, and the background is Fresco Paints again, I used the glass ball gel for the sub's exhaust, and sealed the whole thing with Sparkly Mod Podge. It had to be a Yellow Submarine didn't it!

For my midway reminder project I made a card with a beautiful dragon with blue eyes and white teeth, courtesy of our sponsor Crackerbox Palace. I worked my project with a .studio file as a base. The stamp was painted with watercolor pencil.

Challenge #10 2013 Myth and Magic and Must Use Paint

Hi everyone! It's my (Daire's) turn to set the challenge again and this challenge is:

Myth and Magic and you must use paint on your project.

 I hope you enjoy incorporating some of the magic of mythology into your pieces! You can enter anything you like: cards, ATC's, art journal pages, collages, tags, bookmarks, murals, tapestries, bags, scrapbook pages... anything! As long as you used paint somewhere.

A couple more things I'd like to say:

Sadly this is Caro's last challenge, due to pressures of work she is bowing out but we know you will be seeing her on either the GDT or entering challenges. Caro is one of the founding members of the team and we all wish her the best for the future and thank her for her contributions over the years. Caro we will miss you!

And also, a big thank you to Cazzy for helping me draft this post! I'm in the middle of doing my end-of-year Uni assignment, which unfortunately is taking up a lot of my time!

Here are some examples from the Design Team to inspire you:

Caro

I have used the Crackerbox Palace Dragon and sentiment to make a card for my nephew.  I used watercolour paper and covered it with a wash of blue watercolour paint before stamping the dragon onto it in distress ink broken china to make the background paper.  I then layered the sentiment for the centre of the card, then decoupaged the corner dragon and coloured it in using promarker pens.  I finished the card by adding peel offs!

Cazzy 

I used my Crackerbox Palace Stamps called Rena's Unicorn, Sleeping Dragon and the sentiment "If you can't stand the heat don't tickle the dragon" to make a door hanger. I used Fresco paints to make the background, these are new to me as you can probably tell. I also used Sparkly Mod Podge and Artist's gel medium with glass balls (the dragon's bed) which I coloured with Distress ink. The images are coloured with Promarkers. I love these images!

Doris

This is my project. It is an Easel card in bronze and beige tones, and I use acrylic black paint in the middle of the top card.  I used a beautiful unicorn stamp, courtesy of our sponsor Crackerbox Palace . I gave him a small shadow in light blue, almost imperceptible, I used glitter to the moon and also to a fairy, that I cut as an additional element. Plus I used flowers and ribbons.

Lyn

I got nice and messing painting this castle with acrylic paints and adding the sentiment and dragon from our sponsors Crackerbox Palace . They were stamped in black ink covered in clear embossing power and then zapped with the heat gun. Then I cheated and coloured them with ProMarkers. (The paint was covering up the lines!) I've added a couple of brads for 'handles' and gone round the whole thing with a black Tempo marker pen. And here's my second card....

I've used the same stamp and sentiment from our sponsor. I covered a blank card with some medieval looking backing paper rounded off the corners and edge it all in brown ink, then painted it with some metallic paints, which  I had as freebies from a magazine. I also made the flowers the same way, add a spray of colour with some Cosmic Shimmers. They left a nice sheen on the paper and of course, I made a nice mess!

And finally to me! I made this set of notecards using the Stone Face stamp from Crackerbox Palace (as soon as I saw it I thought of those statues from Ancient Greece). I definitely used a lot of paint on these! I started by finger painting on a sheet of watercolour paper then did a bit of brush painting and stamped yet more paint with a couple of handmade stamps. I chopped the sheet into four (so they were perfectly card-sized), added a border and stamped my Stone Face in brown acrylic before adding a few pen doodles. I like that they go together, but aren't too 'matchy matchy'. I'll be sharing a more detailed tutorial of these on my blog tomorrow.

Midway Reminder for Challenge #9 Dark and Bright and Don't be Square (or rectangular)

Here is your reminder call! You have until Saturday 11th May mid-day to enter the challenge, and  you should use one dark colour and one bright colour for most of your card, and white is not allowed apart from on images (and sentiments). Images can have other colours too. Also no squares or rectangles on cards especially the card shape, and layouts should feature shapes that are not square or rectangular.

This time I enlarged the digi bj-butterblue, courtesy of Stitchy Bear Digital Stamps Then with the saturation function, maximized and printed a black and white larger image. I use watercolor pencil skin color. The colors I used are black and bright color that I use is lime green , to which I applied glitter. 

Caro

I used Butterfly profile from Stitchy Bear coloured using promarkers to create another page in my jounal.  I used the dark brown of her hair as my dark colour, and orange as my bright.  The background was generated using spiced marmalade distress ink with masking, stamping, quotes and highlights with sakura stardust and an orange glitter pen for added interest.

Here at last, better late than never, but as my teacher used to say, 'Better Never Late' Here's my take on this fortnight's challenge, a dark colour and a bright colour and not square (or rectangle) So, I've cut a square card round, embossed the black card with 'manly shapes' seeing I'm using this little guy again from Stitchy Bear Digi Stamps, then fixed that on the front of the card, added some swirly die-cuts and some sentiments! The odd shape of the topper, helps to keep the round card up right!

Even later!

Late for my own reminder, oh dear! I decorated a little wooden box using Starry Eyed die cut with an oval, and adhered to an oval box, with oval frame. Colours dark purple and bright green.

Round the edge of the box I stuck bright breen lacy ribbon which was from Crafty Ribbons. I used sparkly Mod Podge throughout.
