I was fortunate to capture the last seasonal bloom of this Yorkist Rose Tree set out on the farm grounds by Abigail Adams in 1788.  It is just amazing to me to be looking at this flower that was planted and enjoyed by Abigail Adams and family more than 200 years ago.

Happy Independence Day!

Pictured here are likenesses of John and Abigail Adams inside the gate at their farm that they called "The Old House at Peacefield" or better known today as "The Adams Mansion".

John Adams was one of this country's "Founding Fathers" who drafted and signed the Declaration of Independence on July 4th, 1776. What you may not know is that John Adams and his fellow founding father and rival, Thomas Jefferson, died on July 4, 1826, on the 50th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence. Jefferson died a few hours before Adams. John Adams was 90 years old when he died. Enjoy your weekend everyone!

Abigail Adams Cairn

The Abigail Adams Cairn was erected in 1896 to mark the spot from which Abigail Adams and young son. John Quincy Adams, watched the smoke of burning Charlestown and heard the sound of the guns of Bunker Hill on June 17, 1775. As late as 1904, one could still see from Penn's Hill the blue waters of Dorchester Bay, the present city of Charlestown, and the tall shaft of Bunker Hill Monument. The Abigail Adams Cairn is approximately ten feet high by four-and-a-half feet in diameter field stone and mortar cairn located on Penn's Hill in South Quincy. Many adults and children gathered stones from their own properties or obtained them from historic sites and birthplaces to have them placed in the cairn.
There are several similar cairns in Quincy: the Myles Standish Cairn, erected one year earlier in 1895 and the twin entrance posts to St. Mary's Cemetery on Crescent Street.

Abigail Adams

This is a plaque to Abigail Adams in Quincy Center, next to a statue of her with her son, John Quincy Adams. I wasn't happy with any of my pictures of the statue and this painting of her is so wonderful it needs to be shown.

Abigail Adams

This is a statue of Abigail Adams, wife of America's second president, John Adams. This statue is in Boston and is part of the Boston Women's Memorial on the mall on Commonwealth Ave. The sculptures are by artist Meredith Bergmann and represent her thinking about representation in public art. Unlike conventional statues that are larger than life and set upon pedestals, these statues are more human-sized and invite viewers to interact with them.

Summer Attraction

This tiger swallowtail butterfly was a delight to see pollinating the phlox bed along my driveway.
