Why Writers Should Go to Conferences

I made this video for a conference I love. (Go Storymakers!) It shows why writers need to go to conferences, or at least have writer friends who speak their language. The wonderful people who were in the video are some of the funniest, most awesome people I know. Check it out:

Cover reveal for David Powers King's THE UNDEAD ROAD

I'm so thrilled for my friend and critique partner, the one and only DPK, at his release of THE UNDEAD ROAD. And I'm thrilled to be part of his cover reveal! I had the privilege of reading an early version of this book, and loved it to pieces. It's so full of personality and spunk and well, LIFE. (No pun intended.) Just six short weeks, and this could happily be on your e-reader.

The Undead Road: My Zombie Summer: Part 1
Ebook Release: January 1st, 2016
Paperback: January 26th, 2016
Cover by Steven Novak

Nothing brings the family together like a zombie apocalypse …

Fifteen-year-old Jeremy Barnes would rather watch a zombie movie than shoot a real one, but he has no choice if his family wants to survive the end of the world. Their plan? Drive across the infected United States to a cabin in the Colorado Rockies without a scratch, but their trip takes a complicated detour in the middle of Nebraska when they find Kaylynn, a girl who can handle a baseball bat better than Jeremy can hold a .45 Berretta. And when they stumble into a sanctuary, Jeremy soon learns that Kaylynn is stronger than she looks—a deadly secret lies inside her.

After the radio picks up a distress call from Kansas City about a possible cure, Jeremy’s parents go with a team to investigate. They never return. The only way to find their parents is for Jeremy and his sister Jewel to rely on a dangerous girl who might just turn on them at any moment.

And there's a contest!!

A while ago, David invited the blogosphere to let him turn one unfortunate lucky contestant into a zombie for The Undead Road. The winner was Ilima Todd, who is now the awesome author of Remake. The next installment of My Zombie Summer is underway, and David wants to do this contest again. Want to be in a zombie book? Not only is this your chance, but it is your choice!

Between now and next Wednesday, send an email to dpowersking [at] gmail [dot] com, with the subject line: Zombify Me! Contest. In your email, David wants you to tell him three things:

1: The name you will be identified as (example: your first name).
2: A description of yourself—the more detailed you are, the better.
3: How would you like the survivors to put you out of your misery?

Four casualties contestants will be chosen on Wednesday, November 25th. The most inventive or interesting entry will be zombified! The other three who are unlucky fortunate enough to survive will be given special honors. Winners will be announced on December 2nd on David’s blog.

Prizes? The winner will be zombified in the pages of My Zombie Summer: Part Two, receive a signed proof of the novel (when it’s ready), and a $20 Barnes and Noble gift card. The runner ups will receive a free ebook of The Undead Road for their Kindle (other platforms TBA).

Thank you for participating, and good luck!

I have two books releasing today!

That's right. TWO BOOKS. On the exact same day. What are the odds?

First up: the paperback of THE FORBIDDEN FLATS! Now, for the first time ever, you can get the set in either hardback or paperback. Curious about how pretty they look together? Let's take a look, shall we?

Here are the paperbacks, cozying up to each other side by side.

And here the backs are, like they're walking off into the sunset.

And the spines.

And here they all are together! Looking all pretty and matchy.

And THE FORBIDDEN FLATS paperback releases today! It's online and in bookstores everywhere. Like here:

So what is the second book releasing, you might ask?

It's a book I contributed to, along with some other best-selling authors. An amazing photographer, Jonathan Diaz, started the Anything Can Be Project as a way to help kids with pediatric cancer to know that anything was possible. He shot them in costume and living their dream-- no matter how fantastical or realistic it was.

I was chosen to write the story for a sweet, spunky, ADORABLE 4 year old girl named Braelyn, who was diagnosed two years ago with acute lymphoblastic leukemia. Her dream was to be a super hero and saved her stuffed friends who were tied up on the train tracks with a train barreling toward them. It was such a joy and honor to write her story. I am beyond grateful to have been able to be a part of such a wonderful project.

The book is filled with photographs that are downright incredible, with kids who are brave fighters with big dreams. Nearly two dozen authors (Liesl Shurtliff, Tyler Whitesides, Sara B. Larson, Chad Morris, Ally Condie, J. Scott Savage, Jennifer A. Nielsen, Brandon Mull, Shannon Hale, Frank Cole, Kristyn Crowe, Clint Johnson, Ilima Todd, Adam Sidwell, Lehua Parker, Stephen Reid Andrews, Sharlee Glenn, Jess Smiley, Linda Gerber, and Bobbie Pyron) have contributed modern-day fairy tales to this book and let me tell you: IT IS BEAUTIFUL. AND AMAZING. AND INSPIRING. Something to put on your coffee table; something to read to your kids; something to enjoy every single bit of yourself. You can get the book online or in bookstores.

If you want to find out more about everything that went into this incredible book, check out this KSL news article, and glimpse a peek at a picture of Braelyn in her superhero costume. Then check out the Anything Can Be Project site, and see some of the videos that show what goes into each shoot.

Psst!
And there's still time to enter my reviewer appreciation giveaway! You can earn entries by leaving reviews (or get entries for the ones you already left!) for Sky Jumpers or The Forbidden Flats on Amazon, Goodreads, or Barnes and Noble.

Authors United Against Child Slavery

I am very grateful to have been able to join with Authors United Against Child Slavery, where authors unite to raise funds for Operation Underground Railroad (O.U.R.), a nonprofit that organizes undercover operations to free many of the 2 million children being trafficked as sex slaves around the world. It is such an awful, terrible, heinous thing, and I am so glad that the organizers of Authors United Against Child Slavery have come up with a way that we can all help.

So what can you do? Donate money to O.U.R., so they can continue freeing as many kids as possible. Not only will you get the good feelings that come along with helping out someone in so great a need, but you'll also receive a book from one of the participating authors as our way of saying thank you.

Participating authors are donating their books in exchange for donations

  • Donate $20 to receive a free book from a participating author (book prizes selected at random).
  • Donors of $40 or more will receive two free books, a series, or a bundle (selected at random as well).

Nearly 200 books have been donated by generous authors to help raise funds for this great cause--see the list of participating authors/books below!

Donate and get a book anytime up until July 4, 2015
