Tula Pink - 100 Block Sampler

In the spring a 100 blocks in a 100 days quilt along happened on Instagram. #100blocksin100days, check out their hashtag.  It's impressive.

The idea was sew up Tula Pink's City Sampler quilt doing one block a day. Well, I missed the beginning of that bandwagon. Last week I finally made the leap, just as many people are finishing up.

Everyone who participated had such a cool spin on the sampler. Many blocks were downright gorgeous. It inspired me to borrow the book and get cutting. I have wanted to make a neutral quilt with shades of grey and a pop of blue for sometime. Fingers crossed, this pattern will look great in these colors.

CROSSES: No. 1 - 15

**Not all the blocks are photographed here.

So far the blocks read more blue and grey. I will be starting to phase out most of the blue and work more with grey/black for the next cutting round.

P.S. Isn't that fabric second from the right just amazing! There are more ladies that demand a fussy cut. Anyone know the name, design, or anything about it? I would love to order more.

HST: Sashing Debacle

When designing one of my patterns, I had a million HST left over. Ok, not a million but it felt like it and I didn't even have to trim most of them! I took all the colors and laid them out in different patterns to make a HST sampler. There are 16 blocks all together, so it was only 256 HST.

I have seen in the past people using different solids for sashing that is bolder or in contrast to their backing color. I have pulled Kona Silver and Kona Midnight

What do you think? Do you like either of them?  Opinions please!

Not sure I am ready to take the risk, worst case scenario I do have some Kona Snow in my stash.

FWQA: Plan B

School has started and summer is over. {This is very sad to type} The school gives us a nice four day weekend for Labor Day. So, Mike and I headed up to Vermont for some relaxation with great friends and this nugget. Isn't that car awesome?

Now for the real share of the day. In my "free time" this summer I did come up with an alternative plan for my Farmer's Wife Quilt Along. At this point I am so desperately far behind and have no desire to catch up.

Absolutely none.

Currently 21 blocks are done, so abandoning the project completely also wouldn't work for me. Too much time has already been invested.

Introducing Plan B ...

Each Farmer's Wife block was matched with a 6.5 inch hourglass block (finished 6 inches).  I used Cirrus from Cloud 9 fabrics in Mist with Kona Snow. The blocks are arranged alternating hourglass and Farmer's Wife block to create a 6 x 7 grid.

Around the outside is an 1.5 inch border. To make this quilt finish a little larger, I added another border of flying geese. Each piece finishes at 3 inches x 6 inches, with a diamond in each corner. Two sides are in warm colors, the other two in cool colors.

I used the four geese at a time method to speed up the process. In total I needed 14 different prints to make 56 flying geese. The backing was pieced from extra fabric not used in the blocks.

One afternoon was all I needed to get the new plan completed. It came out super cute and it done :)

Farmer's Wife 1920's: Finished

Oh tears of joy are being shed.

This finish has been a long time coming. My 1920's Farmer's Wife quilt got started in 2014, last year I purchased the super cute and fitting chicken fabric for the back. Then it sat for a whole year longer.

Pathetic completion rate, I know.

As I sat and bound this quilt, I was reminiscing that these blocks were created in 1922. It's almost one hundred years ago! How awesome is that? So long ago and still relevant.

A little more reminiscing to add.

While compiling all the links for this post I sat and read the comments for each post. Crazy how much time has gone by and friendships that had just started two years ago have turned into so much more. Friends who have continually inspired me through their blogs, and for some of them now in person friends! These two years have been such a wonderful adventure into the quilt world.

99 Problems

Ever have that feeling you bit off more than you can chew? Like 99 blocks too many?

That is how I feel about the Farmer's Wife Quilt Along. I only have 20 blocks done .... that puts me at 79 to go.

Insert screaming contorted face.

Seriously, what was I thinking? Am I insane? Did I really think I could make that many 6 inch blocks on a schedule? I see all the pretty blocks posted on the group and want to cry at the fact I will never reach that level of Farmer's Wife success.

Here is my level of Farmer's Wife fail, I don't even know the names of these blocks!

So, onto plan B ...

The new idea will include 36 blocks some sashing and lots of flying geese. I haven't worked out all my details yet, but I will share more later when I have a legit plan not a fancy idea.

The goal is for the quilt to finish at about 48 inches square so it's useable but not overwhelming to finish. 16 more sounds so much better than 79 more!

Deep breaths.

Thimble Blossom's Sampler {Finally!} Finished

While being forced to watch season 5 of Game of Thrones, I got a lot of hand quilting done. Here is my last post about the Thimble Blossoms Sampler, back in August (of last year). This quilt is no longer sitting lonely and abandoned. It was fun trying out all my favorite Thimble Blossom blocks.

Just realized the quilt is upside down.  How can I tell?  The houses are upside down, oops!

Poor Dwell block, this just didn't do you justice!

After finishing the quilt top, I was unsure how I was going to quilt this one. One day I just came to the conclusion about hand quilting. Then started. The last two months have been spent on the couch quilting away and I am very excited about the outcome. This monumental task was well worth the effort.

If you are also interested in quilting using big stitches, here is the tutorial. Instead of using floss, I used pearl DMC thread size 8. The whole quilt was done using white thread. Yay, third project finished this summer :)

Thimble Blossoms Sampler

This quilt-as-you-go-adventure is finally completed. Ok, not done but the top is finished :)

Puddle Jump Block

Rise and Shine Block

A while ago, I came up with the idea to put a bunch of Thimble Blossom blocks together and make one big sampler quilt. There is just not enough time in the day to make each of Camille's beautiful quilts so this was the next best thing. All the blocks are different sizes so this one was a pain to figure out, but well worth the result. I love how this one turned out, and those small spools are still my favorite!

Quilt - As - You - Go - Adventure

A while ago, I posted about making a Thimble Blossoms sampler. I will never have enough time to make all of her beautiful quilts, so this is the next best thing. One of my blogging friends called it a Quilt-As-You-Go-Adventure. I really liked the name, so it stuck! The top is still in parts but it's at least progress, yay.

I absolutely feel in love with the Dapper block, it would make a great baby boy blanket.  This might have to become a full quilt. It's super easy and looks complicated, my favorite kind :)

Now the bottom half needs to come together, but at least now I am half way done!  How is everyone else doing on their WIPs?  This month is almost over.

Thimble Blossoms Medley

Over the weekend I started making two Swoon blocks, "just because."  I had no plan in mind and just did, because well, I have always wanted to make a Swoon quilt.  Reality is there are so many  Thimble Blossom quilts that I just love and want to make, yet haven't found the time.  Here is my solution ... create a medley or sampler of my favorites.  Then I get to make all the pretty blocks, and there is only one quilt to show for it all :) Win, win.

I make a plan finding the sizes of all my favorite blocks and laid it all out on graph paper.  Many of the blocks had to get scaled down to fit.  One of the blocks is Spool.  These are smaller than the original, but still just cute.  I then planned the quilt in sections to make it more manageable.

The blocks above were inspired by the quilt pattern Playground found in the Retro Simplify book, and the blocks below from the pattern Round & Round.  These blocks are also scaled down to fill between the larger blocks.  With all the crazy sized blocks these now fit in nicely.

Two of the larger sections are now finished and I am on my way.  There are in total 6 sections, that makes me 1/3rd done :)  Stay tuned for more!.  I have my next section cut and ready.
