Round Trip Quilts: The Final Border!

Our Round Trip Quilts is nearing the end! This is Christina @Wips and Tuts autumn themed quilt. She said she wanted fall colors with a fall theme. I added in the left hand row. Nothing says fall like steaming hot mugs of cocoa and migrating birds.

Mary @ See Mary Quilt stole my idea of the foxes, when I saw this quilt and knew the theme I went out and bought the Fancy Fox pattern. So I was stuck moving on to Plan B!

Mary left this little fox as an extra, so I had to include him as I loved his floral print face. If anyone knows what print this is, let me know!

Every one did such a great job following the theme of this quilt. Hopefully it's everything Christina wanted and then some. I am excited to get mine back too!  This whole project was so much fun :)

Round Trip Quits: Stop 6

This quilt center belongs to Kim @ Ties That Bind Quilting. She sent along some of the blue-grey fabric so the quilt would have a coherent background theme. When I went reorder more background fabric, I got a nice sky blue color (twice). Needless to say, neither was a match. So on to Plan B. I made a new plan working with the small scraps that were left over and pulling some nice saturated colors from my stash. The more saturated border adds a bit of a pop similar to Kim's original blocks.

Bits and pieces that came in the bag, I added the block in the top right hand corner.

Next, I need to find where I placed Kim's notebook and get this thing in the mail. Fingers crossed that it's only lost in my disastrous sewing area and not really lost. Hopefully everyone is enjoying thier summer weekend. I'm actually up in Vermont running a mud race with a group of gals from work. It's the kind with all those obstacles. Mud races have got such bad publicity lately it's making me nervous. For once I am more scared about getting sick, rather than being last! I'll let you all know if I survive.

Round Trip 5.0

Back to the no time to blog thing!  Oops, this went out weeks ago but forgot to upload the pictures. More like happily found them on my camera, yay me, lucky you. Here is my contribution to Heather @ QA Creations quilt. She sent along a group of words she picked out for her daughter for us to add to in replacement for a center. I must say at first I was hesitant about not having a quilt to work from, but am LOVING how it's coming out (no pun here).

Clearly, I picked the word love and paired with some hearts, tutorial @ Cluck Cluck Sew. She was looking for jewel tones, but not too girly. She's hoping to avoid the pretty princess stage ... lol.  She would like the quilt to finish at a twin size, and it's going to look great all put together. I tossed the the leftovers that didn't get used in the block, hopefully she can find a home for them too.

Here is how everything looks together so far! Stunning, right!?

Round Trip Border 4: Late but Done

This month I was pretty far behind on my duties with the Round Trip quilt along. It took sometime to make a plan for Liz's center at Green Cheese Quilting. I decided to go with a Kansas Trouble Variation. It had the triangular look that goes with the center block and the Bear Paws Mary added.  I also wanted to bring out the navy in the feathers added by Leanne.  So this is what I came up with ...

Pretty sure I say this every time, but I want to keep this one!

Round Trip Quilts ... Border 2

This month was a stumbling block for me. A writer's block for sewers. Is there a name for that? Sewer's block? Either way this month I felt a depletion of my sewing creativity with this border. Don't get me wrong, I love what is going on here, I just didn't know how to add to this one. The block sat on my coffee table for two weeks as I waited for some stoke of creative genius. That never happened.

Leanne requested stars, but other than that gave us the creative liberty to go crazy. When I am given the rights to go bonanza, I love to take advantage of the situation. That was my exact, downfall. I also was stumped on the yellow background. It's not my thing, but I really liked how it was working out. I wanted to be me, but still adhere to the original intent of the quilt. This left me perusing through Pinterst looking for inspiration, my handy 500 Quilt Blocks book, even the new Moda Modern Blocks patterns. Nothing was drawing my attention.

Eventually I settled on the idea of a shooting star, but how?! I really needed a great block to start from, and eventually settled on the Farmer's Wife block #23 - Country Life. I dug out the templates and got tracing. Then design also has flying geese radiating outwards.

It. finally. just. worked.

Hopefully, Leanne will like the newest border.

Round Trip Quilts

It's time to share Border 2 for Round Trip Quilts! This center came from Sew Mary Quilts. It has an awesome gradient rainbow star to work from! I had to do something with color families to play into what she already started in the middle. Mary sent a small notebook full of ideas for borders, and I feel in love with the idea of an arrow.

Having never sewn arrows and needing a pattern that would fit perfectly to the 16.25 inch side, I grabbed some graph paper and kept my fingers crossed it would work out. I laid out the parts for four arrows, one for each side. Each arrow has two of the color families from the center block. The proportions worked out well perfectly, each arrow wasn't too long or too short.

I was stumped on the corner block, so I sent out an Instagram SOS. They gave me the great idea of a four-patch that ties into the already established corner blocks.

Now I need to write in the notebook sharing my ideas and design for the newest border! Hopefully Mary likes what has been added to her block :) The block is now headed to Christina at Wips & Tuts
