BOOK REVIEW - KING HALL by SCARLETT DAWN - FOREVER EVERMORE # 1 - ESCAPE PUBLISHING - YA PARANORMAL ROMANCE

By : Scarlett Dawn
Published By: Escape Publishing
Released: Available Now
Details:

RATING: 3.5 EZRA STARS!

Blurb: Goodreads

A fresh, meaty, sink-your-teeth-in-and-hold-on-tight new adult fantasy series kicks off with King Hall…

King Hall — where the Mysticals go to learn their craft, get their degrees, and transition into adulthood. And where four new Rulers will rise and meet their destinies.

Lily Ruckler is adept at one thing: survival. Born a Mystical hybrid, her mere existence is forbidden, but her nightmare is only about to start. Fluke, happenstance, and a deep personal loss finds Lily deeply entrenched with those who would destroy her simply for existing — The Mystical Kings. Being named future Queen of the Shifters shoves Lily into the spotlight, making her one of the most visible Mysticals in the world. But with risk comes a certain solace — her burgeoning friendships with the other three Prodigies: a wicked Vampire, a wild-child Mage, and a playboy Elemental. Backed by their faith and trust, Lily begins to relax into her new life.

Then chaos erupts as the fragile peace between Commoners and Mysticals is broken, and suddenly Lily realises the greatest threat was never from within, and her fear takes on a new name: the revolution.

BOOK REVIEW by Michelle:

When a book starts with sex education and regular bananas and extra-large bananas and we are informed from the word go that Commoners, aka coms, aka humans, are regular banana sized and Mysticals are well endowed, much more so than a male Commoner, it made me look at the male Mysticals in this book in a new light.

What?

The bar was set.

I couldn’t help thinking that Ezra and Jack and Felix had an extra-large donger.

Mysticals are very sexual beings we have this explained to us. I did think from the get go with all this sexual talk that the book was going to possibly go into more detail, but I can report this is a very clean read. I think there was more of a tease going on. Not that there is anything wrong with that. I would probably put this book in YA genre. I know the blurb states New Adult but it simply didn't read like a NA read.

Rambling to the front of the room, Mrs Fowler sat the basket on her desk and dug into it. She cleared her throat, lifting an extra-large banana high into the air. “Mysticals are naturally more endowed than Commoners.” With her other hand, she raised a regular sized banana, holding them side-by-side. Point made.

I really liked the dynamics between the four future kings and queens. Ezra would be my fave, he would be the uber sexy future Vampire King. Pearl is the future Queen Mage and Jack is the future Elemental King.

Lily is our female lead and she is a very likable character. I liked her friendship with Ezra the most.

I am trying to be careful with what I say about story line so ...that is all I can say.

I did enjoy the current Kings and their process of training and teaching the future Kings and Queens. They did like to amuse themselves.

I would like to see more of Broderick Dressler, he was only in King Hall for a blink of an eye, but I kinda liked him.

I really enjoyed the couple twists I felt that grabbed me, in King Hall.

This review is a hard one to write because although I enjoyed King Hall and its characters and I can see from Goodreads how much the majority really loved it, I felt it was a good start to this series. I felt there were parts of the story line that jumped about a bit and some parts that were for me personally, slow and not necessary and a bit drawn out.

I think for a paranormal read I would have liked a bit more action and I am at a bit of a loss as to why they kept getting attacked. I think I needed parts fleshed out more for me personally. Sometimes I may have felt like story line was just there. If that makes sense? I think it came down to more meat in the sanga for me or I would have rated it a lot higher. There is action, but...

I could say more here but I won’t. A lot of readers absolutely loved this book. I am in a reasonable sized minority, ( Goodreads only) who didn't five or four star it . I liked it but I wanted to love it.

This review is just my one personal opinion.

I have been intrigued to read this series for some time now. I started King Hall a while back but got busy so I had to put it down. I am so ever glad I got to finally read it. I will definitely be reading King Cave.

I'm expecting BIG things from King Cave after watching the trailer below.

BOOK BLITZ & GIVEAWAY - LOVING THE PRINCE by NICOLE MURPHY - ESCAPE PUBLISHING - SCI FI ROMANCE

Title: Loving the Prince

Author: Nicole Murphy

Genre: Sci Fi Romance

Release Date: 1st August 2014

Format: eBook

Pagination: 213

Blurb:

From Escape’s fresh, exhilarating science fiction romance catalogue comes a story of corporate espionage, betrayal, sex, and bodyguards. Just another day in the colonies.

Cassandra Wiltmore is the heir to the throne of Rica, but it’s unlikely she’ll be stepping up any time soon. So she spends her days managing and building the Rican Balcite Mining Company. The company has made her family wealthy beyond imagination, but that kind of power needs careful control, and Cassandra is just the Wiltmore to control it.

When a new bid for the mining license is announced, Cassandra is determined to squash it. Then the thefts and threats begin, and every step she takes seems to be wrong. Taking on a new protector seems like an indulgence Cass can’t afford, but she equally cannot afford to be caught off-guard. If only the best man for the job wasn’t also the best-looking man she’s ever seen.

Kernan Radaton has ambition, and as protector to Cassandra Wiltmore, he’s well placed to reach all his long-held goals. If only his new all-business boss didn’t make him think of only pleasure. With the company, the heir and the family under attack, the last thing anyone needs is a distraction. But once everything is safe again, Kernan is developing new ambitions — ones that involve a lot of very personal time spent getting to know his boss on a very personal level.

About the Author:

Nicole Murphy is the author of the Dream of Asarlai trilogy, and a couple of dozen speculative fiction shorts. As Elizabeth Dunk she’s published contemporary romance with Escape Publishing and in June will be releasing a collection of paranormal erotic novellas, also with Escape.

Chapter Six - EXCERPT

Cassandra was deeply into her work the next morning when the door announced, ‘Eorin Pedron requests admittance.’

‘Permission granted.’ Cassandra started to smile at Eorin but the expression froze on her face as Kernan followed him in.

‘Cassandra, I believe you know Kernan Radaton.’

‘I certainly do. Welcome to the RBMC. I’m looking forward to working with you.’ She held out her hand.

Kernan reached across the desk to shake it. ‘Thank you, Miss Wiltmore.’

Again, a jolt of electricity shot up her arm. Cassandra made herself remove her hand from his grip calmly. She couldn’t keep jumping every time he touched her. Particularly when he had, hopefully, taken back up with Hera.

‘Please, take a seat.’

Cassandra sat down and watched them pull chairs up to the desk. ‘Will you need any special time to work with Kernan?’

Eorin shook his head. ‘The next couple of days are pretty much here in the office, so I’ll use the time you’re working. I was looking at your schedule and it doesn’t appear you’ll have a lot of time this week to work on the mental connection.’

I’m not sure I want to connect mentally. Cassandra considered her schedule for the rest of the week. ‘Not during the normal working day. Captain Radaton, would you object to staying late a couple of days this week to work on the connection?’

‘Not at all, Miss Wiltmore. Just tell me when you want me and I’ll be here.’

‘We’ll pencil it in for tomorrow afternoon and Friday evening. One thing you’ll learn here, Captain, is that we rarely make definite appointments with each other. There’s simply too many occasions where we have to run off to do something else.’

‘I don’t have a problem with that.’

‘Then it seems that everything is under control and I’ll leave you in Eorin’s capable hands.’

Both men stood and saluted, Kernan’s much more polished than Eorin’s. Then they turned and walked from the room.

A buzzer alerted her to a message coming through, and she touched the screen. Bilmin’s face appeared. ‘Bilmin, what’s up?’

‘Miss Wiltmore, we have a Code Delta.’

Cassandra froze. Code Delta meant some enriched balcite had gone missing. ‘On my way.’

Eorin and Kernan sat at a desk in the corridor, bent over a reader. They both looked up as she exited. ‘Code Delta,’ she said, sweeping past them. She heard them get up to follow her, not a word spoken between them.

Minutes later, the three of them stepped into the warehouse. The second the door closed behind them, Cassandra turned to Eorin. ‘Explain Code Delta to Captain Radaton. I’ll check in with Bilmin.’

She strode across the warehouse floor to the red section. Bilmin stood by the small pile of red cartons. ‘What’s missing, Bilmin?’

‘An entire container, Miss Wiltmore. Six pieces of enriched balcite.’

Cassandra swore. Six pieces was enough to flatten an entire city. ‘Who did this morning’s count?’

Bilmin looked at the reader in his hand. ‘Manfred.’

‘Get him back here and I want to watch both you and Manfred count the E’s.’ She spun around to see Eorin and Kernan waiting behind her. ‘Eorin, check the personnel manifesto for the past week. Kernan, I want a list of everyone who’s come into the complex in the past twenty four hours and the time they came in.’

Both men saluted then rushed away. She watched Bilmin and Manfred count. Their results matched the morning count, but not the count from the night before. A box of enriched balcite was definitely missing.

Cassandra wanted to stamp her feet and scream, but retained her control. ‘Bilmin, I want every member of staff of the warehouse assembled down here.’

As Bilmin began gathering the employees Cassandra turned slowly on her heel, looking around the warehouse, searching for inspiration. Out of the corner of her eye, she saw her
father and Staphon enter and approach her.

‘How much?’ Her father was all business.

‘An entire case.’

Andar paled and Staphon swore. ‘How could someone walk out with an entire case of E?’

‘Perhaps they didn’t walk out with it. Perhaps it is still here.’ Cassandra looked at the huge piles of balcite. It would be easy for someone to conceal it in one of the piles, to be picked up and delivered at a later date. ‘Bilmin, take three men and search the warehouse. I want every single inch of it covered.’

‘Yes, Miss Wiltmore.’

Cassandra turned back to the General. ‘Staphon, we need to question all the staff.’

‘Where’s Eorin?’

‘He’s gathering information for me, as is Kernan. Once they come back, I’ll send them to assist you.’

Staphon nodded them moved over to the group of employees.

Cassandra and her father watched the search and she tapped her foot. If they didn’t find the missing case, she wasn’t sure what she would do.

Andar put a hand on her shoulder. ‘We’ll find it, Cassie.’

‘Cassandra.’ She spun around to see Eorin walking towards her, holding out a chip. She pushed it into the reader and rows of figures flashed up.

‘No one appears to have come in at a different time,’ she said. ‘All appears normal.’

‘Then it has to be an inside job. There’s no evidence of an illegal log-in,’ Eorin said.

‘So help me, if one of the staff did this…’

‘Miss Wiltmore.’ Kernan arrived, also holding a chip. Cassandra put it into her reader and the figures began to flow. It stopped and flashed a line at her. She looked at the name, then pulled up the information Eorin had brought to her.

‘Daniel Wiltonian came into the complex at six this morning, but didn’t come into the warehouse until nine,’ she said.

‘What was he doing, wandering around outside for three hours?’ Eorin said.

‘Eorin, go and tell General Blerdon that he needs to question Daniel Wiltonian.’ Eorin saluted and hurried away. Cassandra tapped her chin. ‘He came into the complex at six, but he didn’t come into the warehouse until nine.’

‘He didn’t come in the warehouse front door until nine,’ Kernan said.

Cassandra looked at him, immediately understanding what he was alluding to. ‘This is the most secure building in the complex.’

‘Secure doesn’t necessarily mean impossible to get into.’

‘Then how?’ She turned around, looking for a sign that the balcite lining of the building had been tampered with. Her eyes continued to move up the wall until she saw the first of the roof beams. She tipped her head back. Above her, on a track, were the huge hooks that lifted and moved the loads of balcite, masitum and ortran. Those hooks never lifted enriched balcite as they were not delicate enough. She looked along them, and something caught her eye. ‘Captain, up the far corner, left-hand side. What is that?’

Kernan focussed and she knew he was using his inter-ocular transplant. Another thing she’d missed out on by not becoming a real security officer. ‘I see a red box, with two large rods of balcite tied to it.’

‘Code on the box?’ Cassandra lifted her reader. He read it out and she typed it in. ‘Our missing box of E.’

‘How in the blazes did it get up there?’ Andar said.

‘More to the point, how do we get it down?’ She looked around and the hooks caught her eye. It brought to mind the childhood game she and Diana had once played. Controllers in a booth near the roof operated the hooks. Workers on the floor used telepathy to guide
the controllers to pick up the balcite safely. She and Diana had used telepathy to have the controllers pick them up and move them to the other end of the warehouse, racing each other. When her parents had found out about it, they had been banned from coming to the warehouse. Cassandra sent a thought to Bilmin. ‘Bilmin, wanna play bombies?’

‘Now, Miss Wiltmore?’ came his thought reply.

‘Now. We’ve found the E and I need to fetch it.’ Cassandra looked at her father. ‘I’m going to get it down.’

Andar’s eyes narrowed. ‘And how do you plan to do that?’

Cassandra grinned. ‘Bombies.’ She handed him the reader, then moved over to stand underneath one of the hooks.

‘No, Cassandra.’ Andar followed her. ‘I forbid it.’

‘It has to be fetched down by hand, and neither of you will fit on the hook.’ She smiled brightly at Andar then at Kernan, who was glaring at her just as viciously.

‘We’ll send security up to get it,’ Andar said through gritted teeth.

‘It’s my E and I’m going to get it.’ As she looked up, the hook began to lower. ‘A little to the right, Bilmin.’

‘Cassandra,’ Andar growled.

Cassandra glanced at him. ‘My E, my responsibility. If anyone should risk their life to get it, it should be me.’ The hook was almost within reach.

‘We pay security to risk their lives for this sort of thing.’

Cassandra shook her head. ‘Not with my E we don’t.’ She reached up and pulled the hook down. ‘Close it, Bilmin.’ The two sides of the hook moved together, forming a circle. Cassandra put her leg over, sat on the metal, then pulled her legs up to put her feet on the
inside of the hook, her back resting against the other side. ‘There, you see? Perfectly safe.’

‘Perfectly insane.’

‘Bilmin, up.’ The hook began to rise.

‘Bilmin, stop.’ Her father’s voice entered her head as his hand reached out to grab the hook. The hook stopped moving. ‘If you insist on doing this, you can at least do it safely. Captain, use your belt to tie her onto it.’

‘With pleasure, sir.’ In an instant, Kernan had taken off his belt and was leaning over Cassandra to wrap it around her waist and the hook. Cassandra tried desperately not to notice the heat of his body or the smell of his cologne and breathed a small sigh of relief
when he straightened. She tried to lift her belly and found she was securely fastened to the hook.

‘There, safe as the spacelift. Up, Bilmin.’

As the hook rose, Cassandra lifted a hand to wave to her father. ‘Keep both your hands on the hook,’ he bellowed at her. She plastered her hand to the metal.

It wasn’t long before Cassandra remembered the main reason why she hadn’t really objected to her parents’ banning her from the game. The hook was incredibly high up in the air. By the time it reached the top of its ascent, she was ten metres from the ground. Falling from here would be bad. She shook her head. She had been such an idiot when she was young.

‘Where to, Miss Wiltmore?’ Bilmin asked.

‘Take me to the far left corner of the warehouse, Track S6.’

There was a pause, then Bilmin said, ‘Shit. How did they get the E up there?’

‘That is what I hope General Blerdon is finding out. Now, let’s go.’ She clung to the hook as it moved but luckily the track was well made and the journey was smooth. A metre from the E, she told Bilmin to stop.

Looking closer, she swore. Daniel Wiltonian was the luckiest man in Rica. The E wasn’t actually resting on a beam. It had been placed on two rods of balcite and THEY were resting on the beam. Luckily right now they were balanced, but any move could see them topple, taking the e with them.

‘Bilmin, we need another hook up here, on Track K7.’

‘Right away, Miss Wiltmore. You stay put.’

Cassandra gave a nervous giggle. ‘I can assure you, I’m not going anywhere.’

It was some time before a faint whirr told her the other hook was coming. She looked over her shoulder and saw the hook rocketing along the track next to her. ‘Slow it down, Bilmin.’ The hook slowed dramatically. Cassandra watched it until it was beginning to move over the top of the balcite. ‘Speed one.’ The hook slowed until it only moved a centimetre at a time. When Cassandra was sure it was directly over the middle of the beams, she said,
‘Stop.’ The hook stopped. ‘Lower, speed one.’ Centimetre by centimetre, the hook lowered. When the top of the hook was only a few centimetres from the balcite rods, she told Bilmin to stop, then close the hook. The two sides moved slowly down and joined together, the two beams of balcite now lying in the middle of the circle. ‘Fill.’ From the top of the hook flowed a white substance. It went around the inside of the hook then moved into the centre, hardening as it went. Soon, the entire inside of the hook was full of the hard substance. The two balcite beams were secure.

Cassandra nodded. ‘Now, move me forward, speed one.’ Her hook inched forward until she heard a tap as it hit the balcite beam. ‘Stop.’ Then she reached for the case of E, but it was beyond her. Swearing, she undid the belt. Slowly, keeping her back straight so her balance remained, she bent forward then put the belt around her legs and the hook, pulling it as tight as she could. Then she leant back against the hook, breathing hard. She lifted one hand to grasp the hook above her head, then began to lean out toward the E.

‘What the fuck do you think you’re doing?’

Cassandra screeched and pressed her back against the hook, her hands grabbing the metal as Kernan’s voice thundered through her mind. So much for needing to work on the mental connection. ‘I can’t quite reach the E, so I’m going to pull it closer. My legs are tied to the hook. I won’t fall.’

‘No, just break both your legs and probably your back.’

‘I need to pull it a bit closer, then I can undo it and come down. I swear, I’ll keep a good hold on the hook, so long as strange voices don’t yell into my head and nearly scare the life out of me.’
A pause, then his voice sounded much calmer. ‘I apologise. Just bloody well be careful.’

She nodded, then took her position and leant forward again. She reached the rope that was holding the case onto the balcite and pulled it towards her. Slowly, the case moved forward. When it was right next to the hook, she said, ‘Bilmin, move the hook on track k7 back one metre.’

Bilmin did as she asked, and the balcite beams moved, scraping under the case. The end of the beam was now at her feet. ‘Move me forward, speed one.’  She waited until the ends of the balcite were at her chest, then stopped him. Putting one hand on one of the beams, she leant forward and used the rope to pull the case to the end of the beam. Then she grabbed the rope with both hands, ignoring how her hook wavered, and pulled the case onto her lap. ‘Move me back, speed one.’ She moved a metre away from the balcite then asked Bilmin to stop. Slowly, she turned the case around and pulled it up her body until it lay up her chest. Then she hugged it to her body. ‘Take me down, speed one.’

It took an eternity but finally she was smiling directly into the face of five anxious men, Eorin, Bilmin and Staphon having joined Andar and Kernan. The only person Cassandra would hand the case to was Andar and as soon as she was untied and off the hook, she took it back from him. She sat on the floor, cross-legged, the case resting in her lap. She put her hand on the top and a small keypad appeared. Quickly, she typed in a code and the lid snapped open. She pushed it open, held her breath then lifted the black lid within.

There, lying nestled in six black pouches were six blue rocks, each about the size of her fist. She put the black lid down again, then let out her breath. She looked up and grinned at her father. ‘All present and accounted for.’

‘Thank Peace.’ Andar shook his head. ‘You ever do that again, young lady, and I will…’

Cassandra closed the lid, keyed in the lock then closed the keypad. She handed the box to Bilmin, then stood and put her arms around her father. ‘I don’t think I’ve ever been more scared in my life.’
Andar’s arms tightened around her. ‘You did well, Cassie. Scared a few more years from my life, but you did very well.’

Cassandra pulled back a little, but remained by her father’s side, his arm around her. ‘Any idea how this happened?’

‘Would you believe a practical joke?’ Blerdon growled. Apparently, Wiltonian and the bloke who was to count this morning have been playing jokes on each other, each getting bigger than the one before.’

Cassandra’s jaw dropped open. ‘He moved an entire crate of E and almost blew up the city, probably all of Rica, for a joke? He better not come near me for a while.’

‘How did he get into the building?’ Kernan asked.

‘He loosened a screw on the end of an air duct, inside and out,’ Eorin said. ‘Crawled through it while he knew it was being maintained so the laser system would not be working.’

‘Oh, Peace. It was that easy?’ Cassandra said. Eorin nodded. She turned to Kernan. ‘I want you to stay here and go over every centimetre of this place. I want a report on my desk, detailing weaknesses and outlining possible alternatives by the end of the week.’

Kernan nodded. ‘Consider it done.’

‘Eorin, I want a complete security screen of everyone working here. It was a joke this time, but next time it might not be. Make sure everyone realises the screens are going to become weekly and if they don’t like it, they can go work somewhere else. Bilmin, I want those two jokesters at my office in one hour. Make it clear to everyone working here that I don’t care what pranks they pull out of hours, no one in this facility is ever to play a joke on
someone else here at work, understand?’

‘Yes, Miss Wiltmore.’

‘I also want a complete scan of the balcite shielding. Ensure that there aren’t any weaknesses to be found.’ Bilmin nodded as he wrote all this down into his reader. ‘Once you have those two beams down, I want a full count of the entire warehouse. I know you only did it yesterday, but I want to make sure nothing else has gone missing. No orders are to go out of the warehouse until Captain Radaton has concluded his security scan. Anyone
complains, send them straight to me. No more maintenance is to be done on the building either.’

Bilmin nodded. ‘Yes, Miss Wiltmore.’

‘General, I’d like the patrols to be doubled for the next two weeks. I’d also like to know why the outside surveillance did not pick up the loosening of the exterior vent.’

‘I’m already onto it, Cassandra,’ Staphon said.

Cassandra shook her head. ‘A loose screw. By the time I’m finished with Daniel Wiltonian, he’s going to wish he’d never heard of a screwdriver.’ She turned and stormed from the warehouse.

Cecelia’s inexperience and William’s insatiable appetites fuel her desire to learn, and Bess is a willing teacher. Then, when Cecelia blossoms into pregnancy and can no longer accommodate William’s needs, he distances himself, and Bess becomes her only solace and comfort — and the channel for her most intimate desires. As Cecelia struggles to understand her own feelings, gossip begins to spread. William starts asking questions, and wicked confessions must be made...

When Lord Jacob Fielding suffers a traumatic injury denying him more children, it devastates both his present and his future. He and his wife Jane have only daughters, and the brother in line to inherit his title and lands is a disgusting reprobate, a man who should never have power over anyone.

In desperation, Lord Fielding formulates a wicked plan. He invites his distant cousin Matthew to come and share their home…and possibly more. Jane is shocked, but cannot deny her curiosity. She loves her husband, and their situation is desperate, and Matthew is a kind, gentle, attractive man. But what can this situation bring, but tension and jealousy?

Emotions and libidos run high as the Fielding men search for a way to satisfy the need for an heir, their own lusts, and, most importantly, the desires of Lady Jane, before time runs out.

GUEST POST by VIVEKA PORTMAN

Disrobing Historical Romance

The genre of Historical Romance is traditionally quite prim and proper with love scenes largely relegated to closed doors.

Yet, I wanted to know what happened after Elizabeth Bennet and Fitzwilliam Darcy’s wedding in Pride and Prejudice. I wanted to know if any peculiar sounds came from Mr and Mrs Collins’ room when Elizabeth stayed at their house.

I confess to feeling a little ripped-off when a love scene fades to black.

Things however, are changing.

When I wrote my first erotic Regency romance, The Secret Diary of Lady Catherine Bexley, I didn’t know if any publisher would buy it. I hoped they might, but I wasn’t confident. Most of the historicals I’d read were much more traditional. The Secret Diary, however, was anything but your traditional Regency Romance.
Firstly, it was a diary, written by the heroine herself, lamenting her arranged marriage to a much older and stuffier husband.  She writes of her dismal first sexual experience, and expresses her concerns to a diary, because societal limitations on the behaviour of women prevented her from broaching them with him. I wrote the story considering how it might feel to be a Lady in that era – behind closed doors, with all the gritty bits, and without the benefit of ‘romance coloured glasses’.

As it turned out, my publisher loved it and it became a bestselling title, and my Regency Diaries series grew from there.

For me, there is something utterly exhilarating about erotic historicals. They focus on a time when sensuality and the relationships between men and women (or same sex couples for that matter) were subject to strict rules and codes, and explore how sexuality is affected by those same rules. They detail how men and women negotiated pleasure in a time when negotiations between sexes weren’t as explicit or as open as it is now. Done well, an erotic historical story can create beautiful simmering tension and conflicts for the reader to revel in.

And then there is the language! I rather dislike the ‘frank and graphic’ prose of contemporary erotic writing. If I’m not prepared to call my own genitals by that name, I really don’t want to hear my heroine to do it either. In historical romance however the range of descriptive language and euphemisms is massive. For example, you can’t imagine a contemporary character referring to her privates as ‘her womanhood’ nor would she admire a ‘ruddy headed staff.’ A historical character, however, may indeed do just that.

A well written historical with an erotic edge can be an utterly sensual read. So if you’re looking for a little more dirt on those squeaky clean gents and ladies you’ve fantasised about in Pride and Prejudice why not seek out an historical erotic romance? I’m sure you’ll find it enlightening.

The long-awaited sequel to Chaos Born takes us back into the Applecross, where Lora faces increasing threats to her survival and her chance at love.

Lora Blackgoat — mercenary and smuggler — has only just recovered from the last threat on her life and hasn’t even begun to sort out the mess of having both a nephilim warrior and a reborn hellspawn as potential lovers. Work should be a refuge, but a job finding missing persons puts her in the crosshairs of a violent gang and a merchant with a taste for blood sport.

Reluctantly, Lora turns to the two men in her life for help. Roman — the nephilim — professes to be her soul mate and turns to her when he feels the darkness of nephilim madness descending. But though Lora is drawn to Roman, it is Seth, ex-lover and reborn hellspawn, who Lora must ultimately ask to protect those she loves. Can she trust Seth to save Roman and her adoptive family, or will this be a fatal mistake?

BOOK REVIEW by Michelle:

Another awesome escapism had by myself inside Rebekah’s colorful and richly detailed world of The Weald. I do love this series. Rebekah really does paint a wonderful picture in your mind as you are reading. The detail of The Weald with its Victorian Steampunk appeal and it’s old school life combined with her menagerie of colorful characters is a world I love revisiting.

Lora Blackgoat is one of my favorite female leads. I only really have a handful of female leads that grab me. Lora is always thinking about others and she is such a tough, kickass chick.

I smiled crooked, throwing out a single dimple. 'This would be the point where I offer you a last chance before I beat you bloody. But not today.' I pulled the knife from my boot. 'Today you're just in my way.'

She also finds herself with a new nickname.

Crowhurst grinned at me. 'Heard you picked up a new nickname.'

My back teeth automatically clenched. 'I don't want to know.'

'You sure?'

I glared at Gideon. 'Do I  really have to work with this moron?'

She dresses the part and she acts the part. But under the tough exterior is still the heart of a woman that is trying to work it all out with Roman, the Nephilim.

Roman gave me an amused smile. 'I can assure you, your honor is safe with me.'

I smiled back. 'Oh honey, that ship sailed a long time ago.'

Seth has his eyes on Lora but he has damaged the bond they once shared. It is in his nature to think about himself first and he doesn’t really care who he has to go through to get what he wants. Being a hellspawn will do that to you.

A hard habit to kick.

"Hello, Dimples." Seth leant against a tree trunk, smoking a thin cigarillo. He wore a starchy City Watch uniform under a battered leather greatcoat, a wheellock pistol strapped against one thigh. He smiled at me, teeth white against his dark goatee. A straight razor sat in one hand, the blade angled to the sun.  A saddled horse stood a little way off. tethered to a low hanging branch.

"Having fun watching the show?" I asked dryly. Seth and I had a long past together; a patchwork of fights, long absences and moments of heated, sexual bliss. Then things had soured between us after I'd discovered he'd been keeping secrets about his past. Wasn't the kind of thing a girl could easily forgive, not when you understood the kind of past he'd been hiding.

Things aren’t going well for the beautiful Roman in this installment.

Roman was what you'd call broodingly handsome, with black nephilim eyes, pin-pricked with white pupils. His dark hair was cropped short and black rune tattoos marked one side of his face. Once, I'd asked him what the tattoos meant and he'd told me they were a prayer to the One True God, written in the language of angels.

Casper , The Collector, is a new addition to this cast of smexi lads and I really like him. He has a cheeky side to him, yet at the same time he is on his own personal mission.

There are two unlikely allies in Seth and Casper, a joining of two sides for a mutual benefit.

Lora is on her own mission to find The Key of Aldebaran, all the books and destroy them so nobody can know her secret and use it against her.

The fun didn't stop there, either. I'd discovered I was the only female of my kind to ever exist. Not something I wanted anyone else to know. Nothing like being a freak to bring out the fanatics.

That rotten little book of spells was what had started this whole mess.

Casper can help her out.

'So.' His sunglasses turned my way. 'You're the Lora Blackgoat.'

I served up a frown. 'Yeah? So?'

'So, nothing , sweet cheeks,' Casper said. 'Just heard some interesting things about you.'

'Interesting?' I returned the grin, flashing my dimples. 'Seems you have me at a disadvantage, since I don't know shit about you. Well, other than the fact you have the same nickname as a cartoon ghost.'

'You think you're pretty funny, yeah?'

'I have my moments.'

Casper looked at Seth. 'She's a smarty-pants, isn't she.'

He crooked a finger at me. 'Come here.' I drank more beer, suddenly feeling unsure. Casper saw my hesitation. 'Rest assured, my lovely, you can trust old Casper. I've got plenty of women to keep me happy and, quite frankly, you're not my type.'

No matter what, trouble always follows Lora around The Weald.

There is also a green monkey.

'Not everyone is a villain, Lora.'

In between all her man problems she has to do some babysitting that gives Chaos Bound its direction. Ivor Grogan is intent on keeping his actress daughter safe and away from male attentions, unless he is the one choosing the male attention for his own nefarious dealings.

It was men like Grogan that denied women the vote, and while I was no suffragette, the injustice made my blood boil enough that I wanted to slap on a protest button and break a few noses.

Nicola has her head in the clouds about her daddy. She is not seeing him for the man that Lora sees. That is going to be one rude awakening.

I rolled my eyes, 'Nicola Grogan thinks her father walks on water. She lives in a world where unicorns piss rainbows and puppies never die. She thinks her father is over-protective and I'm too cute for words.'

Crowhurst and Lora have an interesting working relationship. LOL!

'Anon's balls, Lora. look in the mirror before you answer the door, why don't you. You look like the living dead.'

They're filthy things. Maybe someone's got a crush on you, but can't afford flowers.'

'Somehow I doubt it.' I wondered how seriously to take the threat.

'Of course, if it had been spiders... Now that's a threat.' Crowhurst rubbed his chin. 'Then again, bit hard to slit a spider's throat.'

We learn more about Rueben aka Crowhurst the Griorwolf, and Gideon Blackgoat is in danger of all his runners jumping ship and heading over to Velkov’s team, The Sisters of No Mercy.

...the honking of oncoming-fucking-disaster. From what I'd heard about Velkov, she was a dirty fighter. If she was speaking any truth, Gideon was in for a nasty bitch-fight.

Cloete is having moral issues and Lora is trying to find Roman among all the mayhem. Before it is too late.

Can Roman be saved?

'You're the bravest guy I know, Roman, but your pride will kill you.'

Is Seth trustworthy?

'You know what.' I stared out the window, memories playing through my head, It had been my twenty-sixth birthday, and Seth had surprised me with a trip to Paris. We'd stayed in a tiny boutique hotel the entire time, only leaving to forage for food and coffee. It was probably the fondest memory I had with Seth.

Will Lora’s secret get out?

'Does it not frighten you to know that there are many males here who would see you as an interesting prize?' His gaze slid over my hips. 'Even if you're a little on the plump side.'

'Who are you calling plump?' I raised my voice. 'I'll let you in on a secret: this little kitty has some big fucking claws.'

I highly recommend this series. I am rather addicted to Rebekah's world she has created for me to escape into.

Rebekah will have you laughing and intrigued all on the same page. A highly imaginative series with a tough kickass chick, colorful characters and two worlds , The Outlands and The Weald that keep me coming back for more.

Rebekah is up there with the big names in Urban Fantasy as far as I am concerned. I have just had another satisfied reader I recommended this series to. She gave 5 star reviews for both books.

Trust me on this one, you want to pick this series up and give it a go.

Chapter 2

The trees sat just beyond the cemetery's low stone wall. There was no gate nearby, so I had to resort to an undignified scramble over the top. Muttering curses, I straightened up on the other side, dusted my knees, and stepped into the shadows of the pines to see who had been trying to get my attention.

‘Hello, Dimples.’ Seth leant against a tree trunk, smoking a thin cigarillo. He wore a
starchy City Watch uniform under a battered leather greatcoat, a wheellock pistol strapped against one thigh. He smiled at me, teeth white against his dark goatee. A straight razor sat in one hand, the blade angled to the sun. A saddled horse stood a little way off, tethered to a low hanging branch.

‘Having fun watching the show?’ I asked dryly. Seth and I had a long past together: a
patchwork of fights, long absences and moments of heated, sexual bliss. Then things had soured between us after I'd discovered he'd been keeping secrets about his past. Wasn't the kind of thing a girl could easily forgive, not when you understood the kind of past he'd been hiding.

‘I always enjoy watching you work, Dimples.’ Seth folded the razor back into its ivory
handle, blade winking one last time. I ignored the thrill of excitement that sparked low in my belly. Seems my libido had the memory of a fruit fly and had forgotten we were angry with him. Stupid libido. Stupid men.

‘Are you all right?’ Seth's tawny eyes were calculating as he stared at me through
tendrils of smoke. ‘I could hear the widow from here. You know she was just talking nonsense.’

‘I don't care what she thinks. I don't care what anyone thinks.’ My hands tightened
around my cane. A wicked sword hid in its stem, but running Seth through seemed like a slight overreaction. He took a step towards me and I shifted back, fresh indignation spiking my veins in a hot rush. I needed to keep my distance; my body had its own ideas when it came to Seth Hallow, and most of it involved sweaty cravings of the bedroom variety.

Seth dropped his cigarillo and rolled a boot toe over the smoking stub. ‘Glad you
don't care what people think. Especially with your latest nickname.’

I mashed my lips together. I was not going to ask. I was not going to ask. Since the
beheading incident, people had been calling me Chopper behind my back. Gideon had lectured me on the virtues of having a ferocious nickname, a killer's handle to awe the clientele. But I loathed it, the name a constant reminder of a blood drenched moment I wanted to forget. And now, apparently, I had a new one.

‘Personally, I think everyone should call you Dimples,’ Seth said. ‘Since you have the
cutest pair I ever did see.’

‘Stop calling me that. You know I hate it.’

‘It's an improvement on Chopper,’ Seth continued, ignoring me. ‘Though I must say,
the new one isn't very flattering.’ He grinned, like he could smell my curiosity in the spring air.

‘I don't want to know.’

His smile dampened at my frosty tone. ‘Still mad at me?’

‘What do you want, Seth?’

‘You won't return my messages, so I had to resort to stalking. A mighty fall for a
Captain of the City Watch, don’t you think?’

‘I asked what you wanted.’

His bright eyes darkened. ‘I heard you were hanging around that Regulator lately.
He's nothing but bad news.’ Seth's words were measured, but his tone carried a warning tone that summoned a scowl to my face.

‘Bad news, hey? Kind of like you?’ I snapped.

Seth moved forward and I stumbled back, hitting a trunk behind me. Seth came close,
cupping the back of my neck with a strong hand. ‘I'm looking out for you, Lora, something you've not being very appreciative of. You can understand how a man might feel aggrieved.’ His movements spoke of restrained violence, lurking underneath a thin surface of social necessity. I wasn't impressed though, and inched up my chin to glare into his gold‐flecked eyes.

‘Get lost, Seth. I've got nothing for you.’

His hand slid to my right hip, a possessive touch and my thighs clenched ,
remembering moments of tangled passion and deep kisses. I closed my eyes and tried to keep a level head as hot desire swept through me, tempering my anger. Seth's closeness was the headiest of aphrodisiacs, his familiar smell intoxicating. But I'd come a long way since we'd first met, when I'd been seduced by his sweet words and clever hands. If Seth tried to sneak into my bed these days, I was just as likely to pull my cane sword and threaten his Mr Winky.

I opened my eyes to see Seth staring down, eyes expectant, waiting for me to
crumble and forgive him. After all, I'd forgiven him in the past for his indiscretions; had always welcomed him back into my bed after months of no contact. But Seth didn't seem to realise this time was different. Everything was different. I'd found out he was ex‐hellspawn, expelled from The Pit. I'd also discovered he'd known what I was. That underneath my snow‐white hair and eclectic fashion sense beat the heart of a nephilim: half angel, half
human.

The fun didn't stop there, either. I'd discovered I was the only female of my kind to
ever exist. Not something I wanted anyone else to know. Nothing like being a freak to bring out the fanatics. A spell woven into a charm around my neck hid any nephilim characteristics; it had made my hair ivory instead of ebony, my eyes green instead of black. The first charm had broken and it had been Seth who had told me it had contained a powerful concealment spell. I had a theory that Seth had known I was nephilim since we'd met. I saw it as a betrayal, that he'd pretended to care about me. Pretended to be my friend. Pretended he loved me.

Yeah, right.

‘Get off me.’ I scratched around inside my head, trying to reignite the indignant rage
I'd been coasting on the last few weeks. I'd made my peace with Gideon over tankards of beers, and then with Orella over pots of spicy tea. The two of them had conspired to keep my true identity from me and while I didn't agree with what they had done, I understood they just wanted to protect me. But Seth? I didn't understand his motivations, only that our relationship had been a set‐up from the start.

‘I didn't exactly plan for things to go this way, Lora.’ Seth sounded exasperated. ‘I
wasn't sure you'd ever want to embrace your heritage.’

‘How did you know?’ I asked stiffly. ‘How did you know what I was?’

Seth took my hands in his, his touch warm and inviting, full of promise. ‘Sometimes, I
see things in dreams. Premonitions, maybe. I saw you and a suggestion of what you were. Nothing specific, just that you were special. So I arranged for us to meet, and you intrigued me. In time, I learned just how special you were.’

I ignored his gentle words, letting unasked questions burn in the air. Seth saw them in my eyes and his hands tightened. ‘I didn't say anything about what you were because I wasn't sure,’ he said. ‘You had the white hair of a Witch Hunter, so I thought I could be wrong about your bloodline.’

‘When did you know what I was? When were you sure?’ I asked.

‘Why does that matter?’

I pulled away, raising a hand to touch the new concealment charm under my shirt.
Probably a bad idea to even start on questions. ‘It matters.’

Seth dropped a hand and stepped back. ‘You think I'm lying to you. About
everything.’

‘That about sums it up.’

He shot a hand through his hair and cursed under his breath. You're the only female
nephilim that's existed, Lora. Are you really not interested in the slightest about what you could accomplish?’

I gave a short, bitter laugh. ‘Not as much as you are.’

‘You could achieve so many great things.’

‘With chaos magic? I talked about this hot‐stuff power with Orella. You can't control
chaos magic. You know, hence the name “chaos”.’

‘You're stronger than you think,’ Seth argued. ‘All you need to do is learn how to
harness it. You wouldn't have to do it alone. I could help you.’

‘Sing that tune for someone else.’ My knuckles went white around my cane. ‘I'm not
buying.’

‘What about The Key of Aldebaran?’ Seth's voice was suspiciously light.

My eyes narrowed to slits. That rotten little book of spells was what had started this
whole mess. Written by a mad warlock, its pages contained spells for powerful chaos magic, with a rambling prophecy that claimed the blood of a female angel would be the key to its spells. Catch was, female angels didn't exist. The prophecy also apparently talked about a woman called the Dreadwitch, who would fight a creature called the Howling King. What this all meant for me? Well, technically, I had angel blood in me, so technically, my blood fuelled the spells. What else this meant for me? That zero fucks were given. My destiny included buying expensive shoes on sale, a full beer tankard, and a good game of dice.

‘What about the Aldebaran?’ I asked.

Seth shrugged. ‘What happens when another madman gets a copy of it and realises
your blood can unleash all sorts magics?’ He shook his head. ‘You know, I'd have thought you'd want to take charge of your destiny. Use this situation to your own advantage. Carve  something out for yourself.’ He made a sharp, exasperated gesture. ‘Instead, you're still working as a Runner for Blackgoat, as if nothing happened. A lowly mercenary for hire. Just waiting to get mixed up in the next disaster.’

I flushed, feeling like a petulant child, unable or unwilling to control their own destiny. Didn't quite match the strong, independent image I worked hard to project. I rubbed my eyes, exhausted. There's only so much hard truth a girl likes to hear in one day. ‘We're done here.’ I turned and began to walk away.

‘Wait.’ Seth touched my shoulder, stopping me. ‘I've found out something I thought
you might be interested in.’

Against my better judgement, I paused. ‘What?’

‘I know the location of a copy.’

‘Of the Aldebaran? Where?’ I instantly regretted giving away more than I'd wanted to
reveal. After all, I thought my enquiries had been discrete enough. My plan was simple. Find all copies of that stupid book and burn them. No more grimoires containing chaos magic  spells meant peaceful nights for me.

Seth held a finger up. ‘I want to help you, but I want something in return.’

Here it was. The catch. Of course he'd want payment; Seth's services usually had a
price, sooner or later.

‘I want a favour I can call on,’ he said.

Suspicion blanketed my mind. ‘What kind of favour are we talking about? Wouldn't
you just prefer money?’

‘You couldn't afford me.’ Seth gave a low, sexy laugh. One that I wasn't falling for
anymore. ‘Relax. I won't ask for the world.’

I rolled a shoulder, like I wasn't bothered. ‘As long as it doesn't involve me getting
naked, I'm sure we can work out a deal. I agree to your terms.’

Seth gave me a smug smile, eyes lingering on my mouth. ‘I'll set the meeting up and
let you know the details. It will involve some travel.’

‘Where is it?’

‘The Outlands, if you can believe it,’ he said.

‘Fine by me.’

Seth walked back to his horse and untied the reins. ‘You want a lift?’

I ignored the question and limped towards the city to the soundtrack of Seth’s
laughter. He knew I hated horses; a horse riding accident as a child had left me half‐lame. Since then, I preferred my transport with wheels, a driver and some privacy. My thoughts tumbled over each other. Whatever Seth's intentions were towards me, one thing was certain: the bastard couldn't be trusted.
