TMS#167: Girl on Fire!

Tuesday, October 9, 2012

Hi Friends! I'm so glad it's Tuesday! And, especially that it's this particular Tuesday. Because, not only is it the day we have another sketch for Tuesday Morning Sketches, but our sponsor this week is Sassy Studio Designs, and I LOVE all their digital images! The digi stamp I chose to use for today was so much fun to work with! Just from the title of my post and the teaser photo here, you probably already know who it is, don't you? ;)

That's right, Hunger Games fans...it's Katniss, the Girl on Fire!!! I loved the trilogy, and the movie was fantastic! They're filming the second movie right here in Atlanta. I would so love to be able to be part of that. Anybody got any strings you could pull for me? Could the odds be "eva in my fava?" I fetch a mean cup of coffee. :)

But, I digress. Let me get back to the card. If you've read the books or seen the movie you know about the "girl on fire" scene. Well, for those of you who don't, Katniss has a dress that is rigged up so that when she twirls, it appears that the bottom of it is in flames--a very cool scene, which I tried to capture on the image by coloring the dress red, then adding orange and yellow over the bottom ruffles and outlining them in those colors, too. I used the out-of-the-box technique to die cut the circle and fussy cut the bottom of the dress and top of her head. I was really pleased with how my coloring turned out on this image. I have been practically drooling over the amazing coloring that Shelby and Carla do on their images, and learning to color folds is something I've been working on for awhile. I think I did okay on this one. It literally took me about four hours to get this fiery beauty colored to my satisfaction! I added Stickles to the image a few days after making the card. I was afraid it would completely mess up all my coloring, but since it's supposed to look like fire, I like how it turned out.

Here's what it looked like before Stickles. What do you think--better with or without the glitter???

You probably noticed that there is a bow on the Tuesday Morning Sketch this week. Well, Katniss is definitely NOT a girly-girl, so I left it off, and instead I offset the image layer and put a graduated line of red rhinestones along the left side of it. That's a little more in line with her kick-butt personality! :)

Here's a close up of her "makeup." I added Glossy Accents to her lips. And, as in the movie, Katniss has rhinestones along her shoulder and back, as well as lots of sparkle on her face. For purists, I think the rhinestones were on the other shoulder. ;)

I continued the "fire" theme on the inside of the card, sponging inside the die with several colors of Distress Ink, then I created the sentiment in Word, using a font called "Cheap Fire." I used a rim of red Stickles around the entire circle die cut. IRL they are a very bright, vivid red, but I just couldn't get the color to show up right in the photo.

At the first AR (Accelerated Reader) party of the year at my DD's school, she surprised everybody (including me) by having more AR points that anyone in the school! She has done that for the past two years, but this year she is competing against 4th and 5th grade students (she's in 3rd), so we knew it would be tough. She's working hard to keep her lead, and I plan to give this card to her after the next AR party. She doesn't know much about Hunger Games, but she IS a girly-girl, and she will love the beautiful girl on the card, and her fancy dress. :)

Okay, now, the info on the challenge this week. Every month TMS has a judged challenge, which includes a sketch with a twist. So, the twist this week is: The Letter "E." It can be anything--elephant, embossing, Echo Park papers, etc. For my card, I have embossed edges on my die cuts, and I used the "Earth" Copic markers for Katniss' hair. And, I know it's stretching it a bit, but I also give myself an "E for Effort" for my coloring this week! ;D What's your "E" going to be? Can't wait to find out!

So, head on over to the Tuesday Morning Sketch Challenge blog and check out the rest of the projects by our awesome DT, as well as our new Best of the Best Guest Designer, Alison. By the time you've done that, you'll be "E"nergized to create your own fab work of art. And, remember the winner gets a prize from Sassy Studio Designs! How awesome is that!!!

Thanks for stopping by today, and have a spectacular week!

Faith, Trust, & Pixie Dust

Monday, July 23, 2012

Happy Monday, Friends! I hope your week is getting off to a great start. I'm starting off the week in my craft room, so I'm a happy girl, today! One of my nieces is having a baby girl soon, and I found out that she is decorating the nursery in a Tinkerbell theme, using pinks and purples. I just happened to have a cute Tink digi image, so I went to work, to make a nursery wall hanging that would double as my baby shower card.

This project took me longer than anything I've ever worked on, but I think all my time was worth it. That said, this is a fairly long post, and very photo heavy. :)

Both The Shabby Tea Room and Stampin' For the Weekend had spectacular photos for inspiration. I just love all the girliness in them.

I decided right away that I was going to use Prima's Fairy Flora paper pack and a Vintage Damask digi paper, so that part was easy. But, finding a sketch wasn't, because I wanted to use several different papers and didn't want to cover them up too much.   I tried several sketches, and this one, from the Simon Says Stamp Challenge this week was perfect!

My sewing machine has a lot of built-in stitches that I've never used, so I thought I'd try one out here. Being a fairy project, a leaf stitch seemed like a good choice. I used a meandering stitch on the bg paper, and alternated between zig zag and straight stitch on the vertical panel.

While I had my sewing machine going, I took some wide lime green tulle ribbon, folded about a third of it over, then stitched down the center to make a ruffle for the bottom of the wall hanging. I adhered the mini pompom trim and the tulle ruffle with Scor-Tape.

Every little girl needs lots of sparkle in her bedroom, so I used Stickles on Tink's wings, shoes, eyes, and the edges of the flowers.

The white dots around the "Hello Baby" sentiment are Liquid Pearls. The yellow center on the pearl flowers are dots of yellow Liquid Pearls, too.

If you've read my blog very long, you know I love making my own rub-ons with transparencies. All the sentiments on the project, except for the Flourishes Hello Baby stamp, were made in Word, printed on transparencies, and rubbed onto the cs. I could just print directly onto the cs, but I prefer the look of rub-ons because it looks more like a stamp.

I like decorating the back of my wall hangings so they double as a card. For this one, I used the Vintage Damask digital dp again, in green and in violet. I paper pierced the edge of the die cut, stamped a Heidi Grace flower, added my rub on quote and sentiment, distressed the green dp, added another Heidi Grace corner stamp, inked the edges, then glued it all down. Oh, and I've learned to add the eyelets to the back layer of the wall hanging and to thread my ribbon through, before adhering the decorative front. It hangs much better that way, and I prefer not seeing the eyelets from the front most of the time.

The flourish stamp at the bottom of the project came from a Heidi Grace set that I won in a Color Throwdown Challenge/Blog Hop. Check out the blog candy I received from DT member, Wanda Cullen! Thanks, again, Wanda!

Here are a couple of photos of what I've been spending my time on lately: making doll clothes! My DD is thrilled with them, but, MAN, are they time consuming!

Thanks for stopping by and hanging with me until the end! ;) Have a wonderful week!

Tuesday Morning Sketch Challenge #143: Tinkerbell Birthday Card

Tuesday, April 24, 2012

Hi Friends, and Happy Tuesday! It's time for the Tuesday Morning Sketch Challenge! Yaaaah! This week our sponsor is Sassy Studio Designs--isn't that Little Honey's Tinkerbell image sweet!
Our sketch, this week, is one that gives you a lot of room to play, adding as much or as little as you'd like.

I matted my layers with black cs, sewed one of the panels with a meandering stitch, and framed my image with pieces of a Parisian Accent border die cut. I love that diagonally striped dp that I used as the bg design.  It really frames the rest of the card nicely.

Tinkerbell is colored with Copics and I used Stickles on her wings, and a white opaque pen on her teeth and the highlights in her eyes. I'm still learning to color hair, and I was fairly pleased with how Tink's hair turned out here, but my DD informed me that Tink has yellow hair, not brown. :) I sponged Spun Sugar Distress Ink around the edges of the image layer while it was still in the die.

The inside of the card is simple. I used an edge punch on the corners of the black cs--not my neatest job, but I'm learning to embrace non-perfection, ;) and I used scraps from the front of the card to cut the two die cut accent pieces. The sentiment is from the In the Park stamp set from Taylored Expressions.

Now, don't you want to come play with us at Tuesday Morning Sketches? It's always a blast! Head on over there and see what the rest of the DT has to inspire you and be sure to visit their blogs. Melissa has one of the best DT's around. I can't wait to see what you create!!!

Wicked Honey

Tuesday, October 25, 2011

Hi Friends! I hope this is a great Tuesday for you! I've got what will probably be my last Halloween card of the year to share with you, and it's a cute one. I recently won a Tuesday Morning Sketch challenge (TMS115) that was sponsored by Sassy Studio Designs. The digital image on this card is one I chose as part of my prize. It's called Wicked Honey. Isn't she the cutest!

I'm still learning to use Copics, so I worked on coloring this for a really long time. By the time I had it the way I wanted it, I suddenly realized that the ink had bled out quite far beyond the lines in several places. Copics are amazing. It took awhile, but eventually, I got most of the ink back where it belonged and the drawing was saved!
I used Diamond Stickles on the spiderwebs and just a tiny dot in each of Honey's eyes. Glossy Accents gave her lips some shine.

The gold embossed swirl is from an Inkadinkadoo stamp set called Gem Stone Birds. The swirl is actually the tail of one of the birds in the set. I taped over what I didn't want to stamp before inking the stamp, then removed the tape before I stamped onto the cs.

The letters were cut in purple cs for the words on the front of the card using Sizzix's The Ginchiest alphabet font. They are glued onto an embossed panel. After adhering the letters, I covered them with Glossy Accents for shine and dimension. The dark olive panel behind the stamped layer is embossed, but it's difficult to see. In person, it looks pretty cool.

I typed the inside sentiment in Word, made the letters a dark olive color and gave them a shadow. Then, I printed it's mirror image onto a transparency and rubbed it onto the cs.

Almost all my cards are A2 size, but I wanted Honey to be big enough to be able to color without constantly going outside the lines, so I bumped this card up to an A7 (5" x 7").
This was a blast to make. Hope it inspires you in some way!
Thanks for stopping by, and have a great day!
