Practical and Pretty: A Handbound Checkbook Register

Sunday, October 18, 2015

I've got something a little more practical than normal to share with you today. I needed a new checkbook cover, but kept forgetting to go to the bank to pick it up, when it occurred to me that a check register is nothing more than a small book, and I'm perfectly capable of making one of those. So, that's what I did.
Now, you know I would never make something plain and boring like a typical checkbook cover. I wanted one that was pretty. So I found a beautiful, bright floral print cardstock for the cover and stitched the pages in with a longstitch binding, gathering up the stitches in the center for a little pizzazz. And, for a change, I think I actually got the colors right in a photo. It really is as vivid as the photo.
Since I was going to make a book anyway, I figured I'd go ahead and really make it worth my time, so before making the book, I designed my own check register sheets in Word. Pink and Orange are the first two sections. They have basically the same information that a standard register does, but I gave myself a little more room to write, put more lines on a page, and made them in several bright colors. Based on how many entries we normally have in our checkbook, this one should last me about 5 years. Each year can be written in a different colored section, as there are five in all. The book ended up measuring about 5-1/2" x 6-1/2" x 1/2".
The third section is green. I sewed the book together with a deep yellow linen thread. You can see the stitching here, but somehow I lost the color in editing. Notice that the book lies completely flat. That's one of the things I love about handbound books. They are very writer-friendly.

The last two sections are a teal blue and purple. In between the sections, because of the style of binding, you can see the back side of the cover, which has a small floral pattern on it. I pasted two sheets of cardstock together in order to make the cover sturdier. If I'm going to use it for five years, I don't want it falling apart on me.

Here's a look at the pattern on the inside of the cover, and you can see the pocket I made to hold a book of checks. This is the one thing that I will do differently in my next book like this. I bound the pocket into the spine in the back of the book, at the same time I sewed the sections together, which makes for a nice place to hold the checkbook, however, when I actually used the register, I realized that it makes a big lump under the pages, so I have to pull the checkbook out even if I'm not actually writing checks. Next time, I plan to make a flap on the back cover with a pocket so that, when I'm writing in the book, all I have to do is flip the flap out and the book is flat for writing. Whew, that was a lot of "fl's!"
Here is a better look at the longstitch binding I used. I LOVE how it turned out! If you are interested in making one of these yourself, I have a link to the book I referenced below.
And, finally, here is a look at the book completely opened. Isn't that a happy cover? Nobody ever said that bill paying has to be dull, right?

I've always enjoyed bookbinding, but now that I've got my MONSTER paper trimmer, I'm loving it more than ever, and I've been busy making books, but I haven't had time to edit the pics yet. I hope to have at least 3 new blank journals posted by next weekend!

In the meantime, thanks for visiting, and have a happy week!

Paper Sweeties September Release Party!

Tuesday, September 15, 2015

Today is Paper Sweeties' Release Party, and the newest stamps and dies that we've been featuring for three days are in the shop right now! Don't you just love that sweet little mason jar image?

If you saw my post from yesterday, you know that it was not an entire project. I have Part 2, today, which finishes out the bookmark set, and I also created a cute holder for them.
After making the bookmarks, I knew I'd need a place to keep them together when I wasn't using them, and I found the perfect way to store and display them in an easel stand design from the Silhouette store. After making the stand, I heat embossed the Mason Jar image on watercolor paper, die cut it with the matching die, watercolored it, then created a rub-on of the "Fruit of the Spirit" text (in Word) for the jar label. I went over the label with a Spica pen which gives the letters just a little bit of sparkle. Now, I can just pull a "fruit" right out of the jar when I need to mark my place in a book! But, I still haven't shown you the rest of the bookmarks...

I made these the same way I made the earlier bookmarks, with heat embossing and watercolors. For the text on these, I used a Paper Sweeties die cut and stamp (Love), an old alpha stamp set from the dollar bin (Self-control), an IO alpha die (Goodness), and a retired Sizzix alpha die set (Faithful). I like every one of the bookmarks in the set, but my favorite is "Self-control." I was super pleased with how the watercoloring turned out on the apples, and it's the only one that I paired specific text with specific fruit. Do you get it??? If Adam and Eve had used more self-control when they were looking at that yummy fruit, well.... ;~)  (I know the fruit may not have been apples, but it's what most people think of when they think of that fateful day, so I went with it.)

If you'd like to see any of these better, you can click on these, individually, for a larger photo.
And, here's what the easel holder looks like when it's empty.

I thought you might like to see the entire set all together, too. (If you zoom in on this photo, don't look too close. I had a seriously hard time editing the photo, and it is nowhere near perfect.)

I hope you enjoyed seeing this project. Now, to see more new release goodies, visit my Paper Sweeties Teamies' blogs. You will LOVE what they have for you today!

Paper Sweeties June Release Sneak Peeks!

Saturday, June 13, 2015

Summer is finally here and Paper Sweeties' June new releases are perfect for a fun, summer-time project. Fair warning, though...you are going to want to get every single new set. They are so cute, and they all work great together!
For this card, I used the new Surf's Up stamp set and Let's Go to the Beach die set. I fussy cut the surf board stamp and layered 3 wave die cuts behind it. I sponged some white ink along the tops of the waves to give each layer a little more definition. How do you like that funky zig zag stitching? I love trying new stitches on my sewing machine.
I made the frame on the inside panel by using an embossing diffuser, inking the edges of the folder before embossing. Just for kicks, I added tiny fishtail banners to the inside to match those on the front of the card.

I'll be back tomorrow with another new release card, but in the meantime, here's a little teaser of what's to come:

Paper Sweeties May Release Party!

Friday, May 15, 2015

Today is the day! The Paper Sweeties New Releases are available now! Here's a card featuring the new stamp set, MVP.

Jake is ready for the game in his baseball uniform from the new MVP stamp set. I cut Jake out with the coordinating Jake Sweet Cuts die, then fussy cut all the other images. The uniform was colored with a fine point Sharpie. Jake's face and hair, along with the other images were colored with Copics. (The eyes were added with a Micron pen). I created the brick background with a stencil and Distress Inks, then used my Copic airbrush to add a "#1" graffiti image. The blue strip behind Jake was airbrushed first, for a gradient look, then, using a stencil I made from a Simon Says Stamp Star Border die, I added stars with molding paste.

On the inside, I placed the sentiment panel as a baseball "diamond," added the sentiment from the MVP set, then heat embossed the ball and bat on the blue layer.

You're going to want to check out the rest of the DT for more ideas for these awesome new sets:

Paper Sweeties May Release Sneak Peeks!

Wednesday, May 13, 2015

Hello Sweet Friends!  It's Paper Sweeties' New Release Week and I am loving the newest stamps and dies! For my first sneak peek, I decided to go CAS and masculine.
The new Happy Sweet Cuts die set is going to be one of my favs! Sometimes nothing will do but big, bold text, and the best way to get that is with a die cut. I love that Paper Sweeties dies cut super clean and release from the die easily, especially with word dies. If you can't tell from the photo, the "Happy" sentiment is actually peeking through from the inside of the card.
On the inside, I added the "Birthday" stamp from the new Happy Stamp Set. To add just a little more color to the inside, I used a tan Sharpie and doodled around the oval and inside some of the birthday letters. I think of this as a Happy, Happy Birthday card, since you read "Happy" on the front of the card, then again when you open it.

Ready for more new goodies? Here's what's in the new release this week:

WHAT'S NEW...

Over the next 3 days, I'll have cards using all of these sets, but you can see them in action now on my Teamies' blogs:

The Wonderful World of Boxes

Tuesday, May 5, 2015

I love making boxes and books! It's so satisfying to be able to design something from scratch, build it, and have a finished product that is well-made, sturdy, and attractive. And, it sure is nice to be able to decorate a box without once having to consider how heavy or thick an embellishment is!
I made this box to hold a card set that I made last year. I did make a box for the set when I first made the cards, however, it wasn't really deep enough, and envelopes wouldn't fit inside with the cards--not very convenient for a card set! This time, I get the measurements perfect.

I used the May 2015 Week 1 Viva la Verve sketch to decorate the top of my box. The sentiment is stamped onto a piece of canvas that was left over from the box spine fabric, and it is distressed with distress ink, stamps, and a little water. I also stamped a few distressed spots in Pumice Stone Distress Ink in several places.
A side view.

I made this clay embellishment a couple of years ago. It started off as white, but I colored it with Inka Gold. I started with a base of Champagne Inka Gold, then to get the green into the crevasses, I added a tiny bit of water to some Green-Yellow Inka Gold and painted with it. The Copper was rubbed on dry.
The spine of the box has a strip of the same cardstock that covers the top and bottom of the box.

This is the inside of the box.
I added glass marble feet to the bottom of the box, then because these are a little slippery on furniture, I used a standard hole punch to punch small circles of craft foam, then glued them to the glass marbles. The foam dots also help with uneven marbles--no more wobbly boxes!

That's all for now. Have a Wonderful Week!

Paper Sweeties April Release Party!

Wednesday, April 15, 2015

Here's another look at the Paper Sweeties new releases, and today is our Release Party, so the new sets are now available for purchase!
To make the tag on this card, I stamped the little bird from the Tree of Life Add-on: Spring stamp set and die cut it with the coordinating Tree of Life Add-on: Spring Sweet Cuts die. The birdcage, from the Tree Of Life stamp set, was stamped onto a small piece of acetate with Versamark ink, then heat embossed with black superfine embossing powder. After cutting two white tags from the Stitched Tags #1 Sweet Cuts die set, I die cut the bird cage shape (from the Tree of Life Sweet Cuts die set) in one of the tags, then layered everything up. I had to snip the tail off the bird to make it fit behind the cage, and I originally wanted the bird to be loose behind the birdcage so it could "fly" around, but it just wasn't happening. :(

To finish off the card, I added a Cupcake Seam Binding bow with gold Memory Thread and three Cookie Dough sequins with black Stickles in their centers.
The sentiment on the inside of the card is from the You Are Fab stamp set, and I used the flying bird from the Tree of Life Add-on: Spring stamp set to tie-in with the front of the card.

I like to have stamps and dies that will serve a purpose in multiple scenarios. The April New Release stamps and coordinating Sweet Cuts die sets fit the bill perfectly, and they are in the Paper Sweeties Shop right now!

Be sure to visit the rest of the amazing Paper Sweeties Design Team for more Tree of Life inspiration, and don't forget...you still have time to enter the Paper Sweeties Hoppy Easter Inspiration Challenge, too!

Paper Sweeties April Release Countdown!

Tuesday, April 14, 2015

I'm back with another card for the Paper Sweeties April Release Countdown! I never used to make shaker cards, but Paper Sweeties' sequins are so fun, I can't seem to help myself.

I used the new Tree of Life Sweet Cuts die to cut a tree-shaped window for my shaker and filled it with tiny beads and lots of Tuti-Fruiti sequins. The sentiment and banner, from the Hello Friend stamp set, were heat embossed onto vellum and cut out using the banner die from the Be Happy Sweet Cuts set.

Make sure you check out the rest of the Paper Sweeties Team for more sneak peeks of the new Paper Sweeties releases!

And, for a chance to win a fab Paper Sweeties prize, play along with us in this month's Inspiration Challenge!

Paper Sweeties April Release Sneak Peeks!

Monday, April 13, 2015

Hi Friends! I've been MIA for a couple of weeks, having the best time learning new ways to bind books! I'll tell you more about it later this week, and I'll have pics! In the meantime, we've got new releases at Paper Sweeties, and you are going to love them! Here's a sneak peek...
I used the new Tree of Life stamp set for the sentiment, and to heat emboss the white tree, and added lots of green leaves with the new Tree of Life Add-On: Spring stamp set. Because the tree and leaf stamp are separate these stamp sets are very versatile. I'm already envisioning the tree on a Halloween card in the fall! But, wait, there's more! See the three hearts hanging from the branch and that sweet little blue bird? They are part of the Tree of Life Add-On: Spring set, too, and I used the coordinating Tree of Life Add-On: Spring Sweet Cuts die set to cut them out! The Add-On stamp set has more than a dozen stamps to embellish the tree, and there is actually a matching die for every single one of them! The Tree of Life stamp set has a matching die set, too!!! See...I told you that you were going to love these!
I did a little decorating on the inside, but left it blank until I know who I will give it to.

I'll be back with another card tomorrow featuring the new releases, but for now, you'll want to check out what the rest of my talented Teamies have created for this month's release:

Have you played in the Paper Sweeties Hoppy Easter Challenge yet? You have until the end of the month--plenty of time to create something! Easter has already come and gone, but the colors in this month's challenge are perfect for any springtime or new baby creation. I hope you'll play along. You might even win a gift certificate for a shopping spree and a Guest Designer spot!
