Super-sub Indra fires Home to victory

Indra Sahdan came on in the second half to strike twice for Home United as they beat Hougang United 2-0 in their Starhub League Cup Group C match, scoring only his second and third goals for the club since re-signing for them this season.

Home fielded a strong line-up but could still afford to leave the likes of Indra and Qiu Li on the bench, while the Croatian duo of Ante Barac and Stanislav Vidakovic were left out of the Hougang squad entirely, who had five Prime League players named amongst the substitutes.

Twelve minutes into the game, Franklin Anzite found Shotaro Ihata with a lovely ball over the top, but Syaqir Sulaiman recovered well to put in an excellent covering tackle just as the Japanese striker was about to pull the trigger.

The Home forward got underneath the ball and headed it well over five minutes later, as he rose to meet a freekick from Masrezwan Masturi from the right.

Hougang responded with Jordan Webb bamboozling Masrezwan down the left with some neat footwork, before floating in a cross which crashed off the far post with Lionel Lewis looking on helplessly.

Hougang will continue their quest of glory when they take on the Protectors – for the second time in eleven days at Hougang Stadium.

The Cheetahs had already qualified for the knockout stages, after defeating Courts Young Lions on Sunday and subsequently sending them into the newly formed plate competition.

Nenad’s charges’ morale is on sky high, with players hitting on top form together on the right moment. Apart from a disappointing defeat against Gombak in the Singapore Cup, the Cheetahs’ current form is on six victories and a draw in their last eight matches, and currently enjoying their best form run in their history.

A determined Hougang United came from a goal down to hold Home United to a 1-1 draw in the Great Eastern-YEO's S.League on Saturday.

Frederic Mendy looked to have handed the Protectors all three points in the 80th minute when he met a Shotaro Ihata flick-on header with a fierce shot that flew past Fadhil Salim into the bottom corner.

However, Mamadou Diallo produced an individual piece of brilliance four minutes later when he picked up possession down the left and nonchalantly glided past a challenge, before clinically firing into the back of the net.

A Home United side still on a high after a tremendous 7-3 win over Geylang United the last time out will take on an on form Hougang United who have won three straight games to rise to eighth spot in the league.

For all their brilliance against the Eagles however, their defence remains questionable. The Protectors went in the halftime break down 2-1 against the bottom side club and their blushes were saved only by their formidable attack in the second half.

They have blown hot and cold this year which is indicated by their form over the last five league games - two losses sandwiched by three wins. Against the seemingly on the rise Cheetahs, they will need to buck up at the back or else the likes of Jordan Webb and Ante Barac will be taking full advantage of any mistakes.

They might have found themselves on the end of a defeat but that did not deter Hougang United from putting up a credible performance against 2011 Singapore Cup champions, Home United as going down 1-2 in this week’s televised game at the Jalan Besar Stadium on Thursday evening.

Home named an unchanged side from the one which thumped seven goals past Geylang United on Sunday. On the other hand, there were two changes for Hougang, with the most notable one being Canadian forward Jordan Webb. It was revealed after the game that Jordan was actually down with a fever over the past week. The other one saw Ridhwan Osman coming in for Sobrie Mazelan.

After a stuttering start to the season, the 2012 Singapore Cup winners seem to be on the right track recording their second consecutive win.

A goal apiece in each half by Singapore international Qiu Li and current S-League top scorer Shotaro Ihata was enough to ensure three points in the bag for Home United, even though Hougang managed to pull a late goal back through Stanislav Vidakovic.

Last week's calamity witnessed S-League's side Geylang United destroyed by a 7-1 Home United rout in front of the Geylang crowd.

Home United got into the thick of action early in the 13th minute with former Albirex Niigata striker Shotaro Ihata opening the floodgates slotting in four past the Eagle's custodian. His colleague Frederic Mendy further compounded Geylang's misery with notching in a couple more goals.

That first win performance puts Home United's title contentions back in track and the S-league powerhouse will now pay Hougang United a visit at the Jalan Besar Stadium. A win here would place the Protectors top of the league.

Previous fixtures between Hougang and Home have shown that the Protectors still have an upper hand when it comes to churning out results. They thumped Hougang 5-0 last March and fashioned a 4-2 win against the Cheetahs in May.

The only time Hougang got the better of Home was in the League Cup in which former Hougang midfielder Noor Ali fired the Cheetahs into the finals through a solitary goal.

Home take conservative path to victory

It may have seemed to those watching that Great Eastern-YEO’S S.League leaders Home United were devoid of ideas or imagination during the first half of their Tuesday night match at Hougang Stadium, but according to Protectors coach Lee Lim Saeng after the game, that was all part of the strategy he had devised against Hougang United.

The Cheetahs may have been missing five players, but three of them were defenders and none were strikers, so he had reasoned that scoring goals was likely to be less of a problem for his men than conceding them.

Lee therefore went for a conservative approach in the first period before coming out in the second for what ended as a 2-0 win for his Protectors.

“Hougang are dangerous on the counterattack, so I did not want my players taking too many risks,” he explained.

Veteran campaigner Mohd Noor Ali showed that he had not lost his finalist’s touch when he fired Hougang United to an upset victory over Home United on Tuesday evening in the League Cup 2011 semifinals.

The 36-year-old, who had played in cup finals for Geylang United, SAFFC and Woodlands Wellington, kept up his streak by scoring the only goal of the game to stun heavy favourites Home 1-0 at their home turf of Bishan Stadium in front of a near-capacity crowd.

After two displays that had not seen them show their lustre, Home United finally flashed their title credentials on Tuesday night as their short trip to Hougang yielded a win by five goals without reply.

The result meant Home provisionally went top of the league, while for the Aide Iskandar-led Hougang United, it is back to the drawing board as they have now shipped five goals in each of their last two games.

Home United travel to the Hougang Stadium in search for their next win after their 3-0 victory over a defensive Gombak United. That win puts Home 4th in the S-League.

As for Hougang United, last week's 5-2 lost to Tampines Rover would have given them time to reflect and compose themselves for the up coming match against the protectors.
