Feanorian Hero for Midgard Silmarillion Elf Army

Here is the first hero base for my Midgard Silmarillion Elf army. The army represents the warhost of Caranthir the Dark, son of Feanor.

As it's a Feanorian army I have avoided my usual Elf colour scheme of blues, silvers and purples and have gone with a rich red scheme as befitting a son of Feanor. The two core colours are Foundry Madder Red (surcoats) and Foundry Brick Red (shields, cloaks). The yellows are Foundry Ochre.

The models here are Copplestone 1990s Elf sculpts, originally Grenadier Miniatures, but purchased from Forlorn Hope and Battlezone here in the Uk a few years back (and still available!)

The shield design was done on Pages on my MacBook using a star symbol, converted to JPEG, transferred to Word and resized. It was printed on plain white paper at 5mm width, cut out (VERY carefully!) and glued on. It's not 100% correct as a symbol and as Caranthir is son of Feanor, should be oriented as a square not a diamond. But diamonds look better, so diamond it is!

Banner hand painted and features the star of Feanor plus Laurelin the Golden Tree of the Valar.

Silmarillion Elves: Thingol of Doriath with his Banner Bearer and Bodyguards

I've managed to finish the first unit in my Dragon Rampant 'book accurate' Doriath army. Here is Thingol with his banner bearer and his bodyguards. They are a reduced model unit - on the table, each bodyguard is worth one strength point and the command base is worth three.

The guards are all Victrix Anglo-Danes with Republican Roman Montefortino helmet heads, the tops of which have been replaced by the 'headless' nasal helms from the Anglo-Dane box. Thingol is the Oathmark free metal hero that came with the first Oathmark Elf boxed set deals. He has a GW Galadhrim Court head and a plastic cloak from the bits box. The banner bearer is an Anglo-Dane with a GW Galadhrim hero head. The banner was hand drawn.

I'm pleased with these - the 'three layers on a black undercoat' approach was hard to do after nearly 10 years not doing it, but thanks to a brilliant new lamp I was able to do a decent enough job although extreme close-ups aren't the best idea!

I'll be back to painting Wars of the Roses for a week or two now, but I'll be painting Mablung of the Heavy Hand and his Thanes next from this army...

Mablung's Bodyguard

Busy time at work and a nasty back injury have resulted in less work on my Elves than I'd have liked, but I have now completed Mablung's bodyguard unit. They'll be Elite Foot in Dragon Rampant. Mablung himself will be worth 3 strength points and each of his guards will be worth 1, so a 4 model unit can equate to full 6 strength points the unit needs. I do this a lot with hero units. I now only have 5 axe-armed Elves to build and the whole Doriath force will be complete and ready for painting...

More Sindar Warriors

Busy evening finishing the building of the last 7 models in the Offensive Heavy Foot unit. Usual mix of stuff. I'm really pleased with these. The unit is going to look immense!
I need to order a new Roman sprue now as I've run out of heads and need to do 9 more axemen. The archers and Beleg's bodyguard are all GW LoTR range - the former are Lothlorien Archers and the latter are Rangers of the North models. They fit in pretty well actually even though they're a little smaller. I'll take some pics of those once they are painted as most will be unconverted.
Anyway, here are those sword/spearmen...
