Il calderone (The kettle)

Tingere la lana è un'attività che periodicamente mi torna in mente. Questa volta ho provato la tintura in calderone con coloranti per alimenti, giusto per stare sicura coi bimbi intorno (sì amore, sto cuocendo la lana, no, non è per cena...). Il gomitolo originale era rosa confetto e non so proprio come mi sia entrato in casa. Ho scelto rosso vivo, rosso fragola e marrone. La prossima volta proverò delle soluzioni meno diluite, voglio delle transizioni più nette. Il risultato finale è bellissimo, sembra un bicchiere di vino rosso! In tutto 140 m. di lana grossa, da lavorare coi 4,5 o 5 mm. Buona per un bel collo caldo...

Wool dyeing is something that regularly comes back to my mind, and this time I've managed to try some kettle dyeing with food colors, just to feel safe with kids around (yes, darling, I'm cooking wool, no, it's not for dinner...). The original skein was candy pink, and I frankly can't remember how it arrived in my stash. I've chosen vivid red, strawberry red and brown. Next time I will try less diluted solutions, I'm looking for more neat color transitions. The final result is delicious, it seems a glass of red wine! A total of 140m more or less, bulky weight to knit with size 4,5 or 5 mm needles. Good for a warm cowl...

Fuori dal bagno (Out of the bath)

Il bagno di tintura, s'intende...

Con il brodone rosso delle foglie di vite americana mi è venuto fuori un bel verde. Ma il rosso dov'è finito?... Mah. Allora ho spremuto dentro due limoni per ottenere una soluzione più acida, e ci ho tuffato un altro mezzo gomitolino premordenzato con l'allume di rocca. E mi è venuto arancio. Chimica, ragazzi, mica si scherza.

With the red bath from the boston ivy leaves I've obtained a beatiful green. What happened to the red?... Who knows. Then I've squeezed two lemons and added the juice to the bath to reach a more acid solution and simmered a new alum mordanted half ball. And it has become orange.

That's chemistry, guys, no cheats.

Laboratorio di tintura (Dyelab again)

Lo scorso fine settimana ho raccolto un bel pò di foglie rosse di vite americana per tingere la lana e ieri sera ho cominciato l'esperimento di tintura. Ecco il risultato: le foglie hanno rilasciato tutto il rosso nell'acqua (le ho scaldate fino ad alta temperatura ma non fatte bollire).
Last weekend I collected several red boston ivy leaves for a new dyeing session and last afternoon I've started the lab. Here is the result: the leaves have released all the red dye in the bath (simmered a bit and let rest for one hour only).

Poi ho messo dentro la lana premordenzata con l'allume di rocca e ho rimesso sul fuoco un pò, e l'ho lasciata tutta la notte. Ecco come l'ho trovata stamattina:
I've put the alum premordanted yarn inside and simmered a bit again and let it rest overnight.
This morning it was like this:

La lascerò riposare là dentro oggi e domani, voglio acchiappare tutta la tinta possibile.
I will let it rest for today and tomorrow, I want to keep all the possible dye.

Altro esperimento: tintura naturale della lana, cioè con foglie, cortecce, bacche, ecc. Ecco i risultati di alcuni esperimenti. Non vi dettaglio le procedure perchè non sono proprio sicura di quello che ho fatto....

Ho fatto qualche acquisto (I've purchased something)

Mi è arrivata una mail da knittingdaily con l'avviso che c'è una super svendita di libri su Interweave knits. Sono stata costretta.

Ho tinto e filato! (I have handpainted and handspun!)

Esperimenti questa settimana. Ecco che ho fatto con 100 gr. di fiocco di lana merinos superwash.

Experiments this week. Here is what I've done with 100 gr. of a superwash merinos roving.

L'ho messo a bagno in acqua fredda e aceto bianco (l'aceto serve per fissare il colore).
I washed it in cold water and vinegar (vinegar is needed to fix the colors).

Poi ho scelto i colori (in polvere, marca La Nave). Then I chose the colors (powder color, La Nave is the brand).

Ho scelto giallo, verde e marrone. Ho messo la punta di un cucchiaino di ciascun colore in un barattolo ed ho aggiunto un pò d'acqua. I've chosen yellow, green and brown. I've put the tip of a spoon of each powder in a glass, then added some water. Poi ho messo della carta di giornale a terra e sopra ho messo della pellicola trasparente. Sopra ho disteso il fiocco strizzato. I've put some newspapers on the floor and layed over some plastic wrap. Then I layed the roving.

E buttato i colori con un cucchiaio qui e là! I put the liquid colors with a spoon, here and there!

Ho avvolto il fiocco come una salsiccia nella pellicola e l'ho messo in un contenitore per microonde. I wrapped the roving in the plastic in a kind of sausage and I put in a microwave crock.

Infine l'ho messo nel microonde alla massima potenza per due minuti, poi l'ho lasciato riposare per altri cinque minuti, e ho ripetuto due volte ancora. L'ho srotolato e sciacquato. I put in the microwave oven for two minutes max power, then let it rest for five minutes, repeating twice more. After I unwrapped and washed in cold water.

E poi ho messo ad asciugare... At last I let it dry.

Beh, l'ho anche filata... ma questo ve lo faccio vedere la prossima volta. I've handspun it too, but I'll show you next time...

Soddisfazioni (Satisfactions)

Ecco i risultati delle operazioni di tintura del weekend: la lana viola/verdina è già diventata il dietro di un maglione, che viene perfettamente a righe, e l'altra lana... beh, a me sembra che abbia tinte stupende! Ne ho tre gomitoli da 50 gr, 150 m. a gomitolo. Accetto consigli su cosa farla diventare...

Here are the results of my dyeing trials of the weekend: the green/purple yarn has yet become the back of a sweater, and it comes out perfectly selfstriping, and the other... well, I think it has so wondeful shades! I have three skeins of it, 50 g. and 150 m. each. I'm waiting for you to give me knitting ideas for them!

Ho tinto la lana! (I dyed yarn!)

Fine settimana di esperimenti. Ho deciso di provare a tingere la lana. Ho fatto due prove: una con la lana bianca comprata in offerta: 6 gomitoli di mohair, tinti a freddo in viola e verdino. I colori sono venuti molto chiari. Un altro tentativo su 3 gomitoli rosa sempre mohair, tinti questa volta a caldo con colori bellissimi: dal viola all'arancione. Non ho fotografato le procedure perchè ero troppo presa, ma la prossima volta documenterò il tutto! Infine, ho terminato la "sciarpa come il mare", anche questa un regalo di Natale, ed ho cominciato le Monkey socks!

This weekend I did some experiments. I tried to dye yarn. I did two dyes: one with 6 white mohair balls, with cold water. The shades went out very light, purple and green. The other with 3 pink mohair balls, with warm water: wonderful shades in purple and orange! I didn't take pictures of the procedures because I was too committed, but next time I won't miss. At last, I finished my "sea scarf", which is another Christmas present, and I started my first Monkey socks!

Esperimenti (Experiments)

Ieri mi è presa una nuova mania: voglio tingere la lana. Ho tre gomitoli rosa di mohair avanzati da un maglione coi quali vorrei fare una sciarpa. Ho letto diversi tutorial, fra cui questo (con il methodo cold pour), su come fare per tingere la lana e trasformarla in lana multicolor. Non riesco più a ritrovarli tutti, ma vi farò vedere come ho fatto. Non sembra troppo difficile. Ho comprato in un negozio di materiali per artisti (colori, pennelli, ecc.) del colore per tessuti in polvere, nelle tinte viola, verde scuro e salmone, marca La Nave. Vi farò sapere!

Yesterday I decided that my next challenge will be dyeing yarn. I have three skeins of pink mohair, with which I would like to do a scarf, but I would prefer it multicolor... I've read different tutorials, like this one (cold method), and I will post on this blog how I will try. It doesn't seem too difficult. I've bought some powder colors for textiles (La Nave colors) in an artist materials shop, in violet, dark green and salmon. I will report all the procedures!
