My House & Gardens ~ Part I

I know for my followers that it seems as if I have fallen off the face of the Earth.

I promise you that I am still here and feeling a bit guilty for not posting.

So what have I been doing?

I have been spending as much time as possible with my new granddaughter...

and doing a ton of my favorite thing...YardWork!

Can you believe that I love it? Well it shows and I thought I would share the front yard with you first, then in Part II, I will share the back.

The Perfect Place for A Barn Door!

Hubby mentioned that he wanted hot and cold water in the garage and that's all it took for me to get my mind racing on what all I would do to give him what he wanted and me what I wanted.

Brick Border

What to do with old brick.

We had purchased a bunch of old brick from someone that had to get rid of it. And he sold it to us at a very low price...less than 10¢ per brick.

Initially, we laid this at the end of our driveway for our daughter to park her car when she began driving. Here is a picture of the basket weave design that I laid. It started off level but this area gets really wet in the rains and it didn't stay flat for long with the weight of her car.

It served it's purpose until...
Our new garage was built in this very location!

It's all in the DETAILS!

I wrote a post about our new addition of a two car hobby garage that you can see HERE. However, I wanted to talk about the details that we almost missed...The brick!

The brick masons were here and bricked the new garage with the matching brick on the house. When they completed it, there was a bit of brick left-over and our contractor came by to see the progress. He noticed this...

23 days to a New Garage!

The new brick was wet, so it appears darker than the house, but it is the same brick.
We decided that we needed a hobby garage (One bay for me to do my furniture projects in and one bay for hubby to have some kind of hobby car in.) and asked our builder friend (who is totally awesome) to build it for us. We also thought we would get a big fat 'NO' from him because he usually only builds large custom homes. But lucky for us, he had a short window of time and in 23 days we had our new two car garage!

Carriage House Garage Doors Guest Post for Remodelaholic

For those of you that didn't see my guest post for Cassity at Remodelaholic, Here it is.

It's a pleasure to introduce myself. My name is Terry and I live in western Illinois. I am married and have two grown children and we are recent empty nesters. I am also fairly new to blogging since November, 2010 with my blog foreverdecorating.blogspot.com.
It has been a learning curve and I have begun to train myself to think about my projects with blogging  in mind; ie: before pictures and tutorials.

I was raised with parents that made everything they possibly could and forced to sew all my clothes at the age of eight (now I am thankful). So it comes natural to me that, I could and would, tear into any home renovation or make anything I could (or maybe it's because I am cheap). It's a hobby, a lifestyle and a joy for me to do these things. I believe that if you want it bad enough you will figure out a way to have it. I am blessed with a God given creative gene that I am very thankful for.

I recently posted on my painted carriage house garage doors, but with this guest post, I would like to give more of a tutorial of how I did this and why.

These finished garage doors came about one day when my hubby announced that he wanted to replace our existing garage doors with carriage house style garage doors. First, I must stress that nothing was wrong with our insulated garage doors.
Granted they were bright white when the sun would shine on them, otherwise, no problems. We also have three huge windows in the front of the garage with the garage doors being side entry.
It had been raining the day I took this picture so the brick is off color
So we get plenty of light in our garage...no need for real windows in the garage doors. So I decided to surprise my hubby with the doors of his dreams on the cheap...just for the cost of the paint. I painted the white garage doors the color of the body of our upper story. It's called Ramie by Sherwin Williams. That solved the problem of the glaring white doors. Then I had to make two stencils, one for the hinge and one for the handles.
Easy to do. I had clear stencil sheets, so I just drew and cut out my stencils. Then I used black acrylic paint in those small plastic bottles to paint these on the doors. I mixed some white acrylic paint with the black to make the gray for shadowing and painting the details of the screws.
Here is what the doors looked like when my hubby came home from work.

He saw the doors and really like them and then said, "But I wanted windows!" with a kind of whining sound (Don't tell him I said that)!!! Okay, back to work. Using blue painters tape, I simply taped off four squares in each raised panel and painted the windows with black paint. When the tape was removed, it appeared that these windows had mullions to match the ones in our real windows. I then made the gray paint again and painted shadows.

With hubby happy, all I had to do was seal the acrylic paint with water based exterior sealer. It has been two years since I did this process and the doors look the same today as the day I painted them, so this sealer for exterior works great. It can be purchased at any hardware or paint store.

Total cost for this project was just the cost of paint and sealer...around $25. I'd say that's about a penny on the dollar of what real carriage garage doors would cost and hubby is happy!

Carrige House Look Garage Doors

We have your typical white metal insulated garage doors.

Hubby decided that he wanted new garage doors that looked like Carriage House doors. Have you priced those? We are talking many $$$$! No way! There is nothing wrong with our existing garage doors.

So, I told him that I could make our existing garage doors look like what he wanted.

I painted the white garage doors "Ramie" which is the color I used on the upper story wood siding. It is from Sherwin Williams and looks like a tan with a bit of green in it. I then cut stencils out that looked like a hinge and handles. I used black acrylic paint to paint this on knowing that I was going to seal it with exterior water based sealer. There are shadows and screws painted on also, but they are not showing up in these pictures. When hubby came home from work, this is what one of the doors looked like.

He said, "But I wanted windows!" So I gave him windows by painting them black with a few gray streaks in them. I noticed that when I saw windows in garage doors, they usually look dark from the outside. Here is the final Carriage House version of our plain white garage doors.

No more glaring white doors in the bright sunlight!
So the rest of the story...
Neighbors came by and complimented us on our selection of new garage doors! Ha, they are not new, just painted. So one of them talked me into doing the same thing on their garage doors without the base coat painting. Here is their garage door.
