Phil Austin - Roller Maidens From Outer Space (1974)
Phil Austin (Firesign Theatre)
Roller Maidens From Outer Space - 1974
Studio recordings @128
Phil Austin's surrealist tour de force from 1974 is a deft and delirious
combination of radio theater and country-tinged rock music. The story
mixes multiple genres from TV, radio and movies (religious telethons,
situation comedies, noir mysteries, gender-bending science fiction) in a
hilarious gumbo of cultural references, word play and catchy tunes. Of
particular note is the clever manner in which the song lyrics are
integrated in with, and play off of, the storyline. Among the voice
talent featured on this album are fellow Firesign members Peter Bergman
and David Ossman.

I don't know if James and Iggy are no longer speaking to each other (again) or if Iggy is doing another one of his George Harrison type things where he pretty much disavows James's contribution to the legacy of the Stooges. But my God after the lackluster "Post Pop Depression" and I blame Josh Homme for making a Queens Of The Stone Age with Iggy Pop as vocalist record. Iggy needs to get off of this "Music as Art" bullshit and give James a call right now!!!! James announced earlier this year he was gonna put out three singles, and I gotta tell you these six songs are better than anything Iggy has done this year, as a matter of fact the latest single "Sickkk" is in my opinion THE BEST SONG I'VE HEARD ALL YEAR. it has traces of everything I've always loved about The Stooges, to me Iggy has run out of ideas, however James still has The Stooges charisma all over him. I know Ron and Scott and Steve Mackay are gone so there will never be a Stooges reunion but I ain't looking for that or Raw Power 2. James and Iggy could make their "White Album" and I do think "Ready To Die" is a solid album. However after James's long hiatus without playing guitar the rust is gone and he's as solid now as when he was writing "Death Trip" I cannot find the words to tell you how strong these six songs are. The weakest song here is "I Love My Tutu" but it still beats ANYTHING OFF "POST POP DEPRESSION" I STRONGLY RECOMMEND THIS. My vote for album/EP of the year. Goddamn after all It's FUCKING STRAIGHT JAMES WILLIAMSON. Thank you James.
