  1. Bangkok: Showdown Day 3/4

    Monday, 9 July 2012

Baiyoke series of hotels has it's pros and cons. First off, an undesirable point is that it's a distance from the nearest MRT or BTS. This means the only forms of transport would be either taxi or Tuk Tuk if you want to travel somewhere else like Chatuchak. On the other hand, its really near (5 mins walk) to an epic shopping mall - Platinum Mall.
My boy says it's Bugis on steroids, and it really is! Although most of the stalls sell stuff for girls, there are still shops for boys on level 3/4!
Navigation is really easy. The shopping mall is made up into 3 sections per floor. Two wing sections which are smaller flanking a larger section in the middle. Use the escalators and landmarks to note where you have shopped. My girl took the entire day to finish the place!! There is a really huge food court on the top floor which has a vegetarian stall, so no worries if you get hungry! There is also Mister Donut, Black Canyon Coffee and other snacks stall in B1. So... Take your time to explore the entire place. For guys, there's benches on every floor for you to rest while you wait for your girl! :D

Beside Platinum is another small shopping mall which you have to drop by too! They have an entire floor selling shoes and another floor selling bags! It's a heaven for ladies!! I felt that the sizes do run a lil small for some shops too. My shoe size is 4 but I had to buy size 5 for some shops and even went up to size 6 for one shop! Nevertheless, I am really happy with my buy! (:

We left for dinner at around 8pm! This time round, my brother's Thai friend picked us up and brought us to Seasons Change! It's a timbre alike place - with a live band, drinks and of course food! Unlike Thongkrueng which caters to foreigners, Seasons Change is a place that caters more to the locals. Hence, the staff there can't really speak English.
In Bangkok, many locals order beers to go with their meals. So, we ordered Heineken which was really smooth (unlike the ones we have in SG). Also, the beer really went well with the spicy food, quelling any spiciness that might leave you gasping.
A dish to recommend would be their mushroom salad. The sauce that was mixed with the golden mushroom was spicy and a tad sour which is great for an appetizer. I think all their salads taste good, and different since most of their salads are spicy.
Other than stir fried veg, we had tom yam soup, omelette, fried rice and fried dong fen.
Just like Singapore, Tom Yum has the option of adding milk, which would make it less spicy.

We waited for the rain to stop before we left for BKK's night market at Huai Kwang. It's a lil like our Pasar Malam, selling Thai kind of zichar, clothes, shoes and accessories. It is within walking distance from Huai Kwang MRT (blue line), so do drop by to experience their local night market! (:
Another recommended local cuisine would be their Roti Prata!
It's egg prata with different kind of toppings. They have carnation milk, chocolate, ovaltine and many more!
We tried their carnation milk and chocolate milk flavour!
My brother took a few bites before I took the picture!

IT'S REALLY DELICIOUS!  If you like sweet stuff, you have to try it! Though it's sinful, you will fall in love with it on your first bite! No joke! Tasty roti prata, and the vendor didn't put too much oil so the prata remained crisp in some areas, and softened by the carnation milk in others. Wonderful combination, gonna try it at home.

    Day 4
After breakfast, we went back to MBK centre for a lil walk as we did not really cover the place on day 2. Spent quite a while in a stationery shop (I like shopping for stationery so that I can get ideas to make gifts for my boy)!

Our lunch was MK - a steamboat food chain with several outlets around BKK! Their soup is vegetable base so you'll just have to order vegetarian ingredients for your steamboat!
We ordered mushroom and vegetables set, 2 plates of noodles and tofu. It was really filling and only cost us 730 Baht which is cheap by SG standards. The sauce they provide was very tasty too - it's similar to the sauce that's provided when we eat yong tau foo, but with green chilli, lime juice and sesame added, which is actually optional.

As we were about to leave MBK, I spotted this poster!
Looks good from the pictures! Will try it if when we visit BKK again!
My brother's friend recommended their waffle (saw this at several BTS stations)!
Several flavours to choose from! I had the chocolate one! Yumyum!
Really chewy and not too sweet! :D

Trained down to Ekkamai (BTS - Light green) for our Thai massage at Health Land!
    My brother booked in advance!
The place is really big, bigger than a mansion with a private carpark!
Our VIP room which had really simple, and zen like furnishing. Actually all the rooms I passed by were VIP sooo..... yea. But I am pretty interested to check out their suite package, just that it's a hefty 9k baht for 2 people.
Their traditional Thai massage only costs us 450 Baht for 2 hours! It was really relaxing and all the stretching came in handy after so much shopping. My shoulders and legs were really hurting from the shopping, but after the session, my muscles were less aching and less tight!

It's our first time having Thai massage, and we probably don't know how to gauge the standards. But from the overall environment, I would suppose the staff are professional, and the techniques they use are fully orthodox.

And so... It was time to leave BKK! ):
2 red luggages for check-in and 6 bags to hand carry. Total weight comes up to a whopping 60 plus kg? Lucky they were pretty lax with the weight, especially hand carry, but don't take chances just in case!
    Slightly overweight!

We underestimated the amount of things we would buy! We would definitely go for a heavier check-in baggage the next time round! BKK is worth coming back again and again, and definitely for the shopping. We might venture into other forms of tourism but for now, shopping is our main priority! See you again Bangkok!

  2. Bangkok: Showdown Day 2

Stand to win a 5-star experience of hotel stay, spa treats when you Shop & Dine at #RafflesCity this July! Find out here!

Lovin’ MILO,KIT KAT or MAGGI? #NestleSG is introducing the easiest way to win a FREE trip to Europe! Find out here!

We woke up at 8.30am and headed to Level 2 for our breakfast!
My fav breakfast combi at hotels - Cereal, Bread and Omelette!
The chinese food served was almost the same for the next 2 days. No vege option! ): The noodles and rice were fried with garlic!
The hotel served You Tiao alike snack and its really yummy especially after you toast it!

First stop of the day: Siam Paragon
There is free shuttle available at Baiyoke Boutique to Siam Paragon. The bus comes hourly from 10am onwards. You would need to walk over to Baiyoke Sky Hotel to wait for the bus. It leaves on time, so be there punctually or you'll have to wait another hour.

Within half hour (with traffic), you would arrive at Siam Paragon which offers a wide range of specialty stores and restaurants as well as a multiplex movie theater. It is next to Siam Center and Siam Discovery Center and opposite Siam Square. These shopping malls sells things that are more expensive than Chatuchak and Platinium, catering to the higher class. If you're lucky, there are some items that are selling at around 400 Baht when there's sales going on. If you're on a tight budget you could probably give this place a miss.
    Outside Siam Paragon!

MBK Center that is another tourist spot is also nearby! The MBK Center is very popular amongst tourists, particularly Western tourists. You can find loads of singlets, tshirts, males undies and traditional Thai clothes on the higher floors. There's also a Ikea alike store - Index Living Mall there too!
We had lunch at MBK as we spotted a nice food court - The Fifth Food Avenue. The payment method is similar to the one at Marche - where you receive a card upon entry and you'll use it to pay for the food you order inside the food court; payment will be made at the exit.
Most food courts here require a prepaid card which can be gotten at the counter. It somewhat works like Marche. Satisfying my green curry craving, is this green curry chicken with funky looking rice!
Mixed veg curry and stir fried noodles for me!
I have no idea why their noodles are bee hoon?? Also due to language barriers, the staff doesn't really understand me when I asked them about yellow noodles too...

After lunch, we left for Chatuchak again as we did not finish the place the day before. This time round, we alighted at Mo Chit station (Exit 1). You can see Chatuchak immediately when you exit from the train, the crowd is crazy!
Here's some cute pouches that I bought from Chatuchak for my girlfriends!

The glass bottle Fanta which has gone extinct in Singapore.
In the middle of Chatuchak there's this waffle store. It's hard to find, but follow the smell if you can find it, it's what attracted us in the first place.
Personal Fav - Chocolate!! Freshly made! :D
My brother recommended us this - Frozen Banana!
It's hard, so you really need to bite! I had trouble eating because of my braces but still, I love it!

Chatuchak is only open on weekends, and we spent about 2 days to cover the entire market. It's great if you get a spacious backpack for you to dump your shopping in it rather than carrying several plastic bags. This makes it easier to move around too. The alleys within Chatuchak can be rather narrow and although you see people using trolley bags, it seems quite difficult to maneuver it so we don't really recommend it.

Dinner was again at Thonkrueng (refer to previous post) before we headed back to our hotel. We had foot scrub at one of the massage parlour (Issey) near our hotel. Their foot scrub (250 Baht) is quite interesting! After applying some gel-alike substance, they started to remove the dead skin on our feet using a peeler! Guys would benefit from this the most? Comparing the amount of dead skin from my feet and my boy's one, it's really a HUGE difference! Our feet were really smooth after the session!
The cute lady helping my boy to remove his dead skin

Other than foot scrub, they do offer foot reflexology, head/shoulders massage and manicure/pedicure! Do avoid their mani/pedi! They don't have professional nail polishes (i.e. no OPI, China Glaze...) and neither do they have a dryer!

They're opened daily from 9am - 1am, and do book in advance or else, you may need to wait for around half an hour, depending on the crowd.

Stay tuned for our hellos from Day 3 and 4 of BKK!

  3. Bangkok: Showdown Day 1

    Thursday, 5 July 2012

Dove is giving away free Dove Hair Fall Rescue Hair Tonic starter kits! See how here!

Lovin’ MILO,KIT KAT or MAGGI? #NestleSG is introducing the easiest way to win a FREE trip to Europe! Find out here!

It's shopping time again! Not just for the ladies, but for me it's going to be exciting too. Having booked our flight a month earlier on Jetstar, there wasn't much planning to do unlike Taiwan. Small hello's brother's a thailand guru, so we only had one agenda in mind - SHOPPING!!!

BKK is a shopping haunt of many Singaporeans, so bear with us if you disagree with some of our thoughts, as we try our best to have some information for first timers! And perhaps, even seasoned BKK travelers may find something useful here.

We took a morning flight at 7.15am and arrived at Suvarnabhumi International Airport at 8.45am. Note: BKK is an hour behind local time!
First picture of me with braces on the blog!

As usual, we looked for the telecommunication station to get their prepaid card! The telecommunication station is located near the taxi area and you can see it as soon as you exit the customs. There are several telecommunications that you can choose from and we chose True as they had the shortest queue! The prepaid card was really cheap!! For 100 Baht ~ SGD$4, you can get 15 Baht calling time (1 Baht per min), and 1GB FREE data!
There are 2 ways of transportation you can travel out to the city from the airport.
    1) Airport Rail Link
One way trip costs 90 Baht, while round trip costs 150 Baht. Do take note of where the trains stop. Apparently express trains don't stop at every stop. For example, Ratchaprarop is the one nearest to our hotel (Baiyoke boutique), but we didn't take it because of our luggage and laziness haha..
We can't share much on this as we didn't take it. If you're travelling alone, airport rail link would be a better choice as it's cheaper. However, we feel that the roads in BKK aren't really even, so it would be quite tough to lug your luggage around especially if you're carrying more than 2 pieces. Since we had 4 people, it's much better to take a taxi.

    2) Taxi
There are meter and non-meter cabs in BKK. We took the non-meter kind from the airport to our hotel at 400 Baht. It was only in the cab that we saw the price list on how meter cabs are based on, and it was then that we realized that 400 Baht was overpriced. Do doubly make sure the taxi is a meter based fare! Don't feel bad about rejecting them.

My brother recommended hotels in Pratunam area, and so we chose Baiyoke Boutique as they offer triple beds in a room. We booked directly through the hotel as Agoda did not offer triple beds deal. We got the room at 6600 Baht ~ SGD $268 for 3 nights (inclusive of breakfast). Really cheap as Baiyoke Boutique is centrally located right in the heart of Pratunum shopping area close to Thailand tallest hotel “Baiyoke Sky Hotel”, surrounded by retail & wholesale garments and easy walking distance to the very famous Platinium Shopping Mall; very convenient location for the shoppers. Only 30 minutes by car (when there's no traffic) to Suvarnabhumi International Airport and 10 minutes walk to BTS Sky Train at Phayathai Station!
It's very easy to spot the tower! It lights up at night!

The room is exactly the same as what the hotel website shows. The toilet is a lil old but clean. The safe and the telephone were both not working so we had to get them changed. There is no wardrobe, but they do provide 3 hangers. Good for short stay! There was, however, a little weird smell, but bearable.

We had lunch near the hotel and walked around the area.
Along the streets are lined with many restaurants, and most of them sell Indian Muslim food. Since they were vegetarian friendly we just headed in. First off, the service was quite poor (I had to take the menu myself) and slow. However, the food was pretty good. The curry was really good tasting, and filled with lots of veggies that were pretty fresh. The Naan is the highlight. Crisp and crunchy, without much oil to it, it's a refreshing dish! Well perhaps that's because I'm not a Nan Guru. Overall, food wouldn't be a problem for us Singaporeans!

There are lots of small shops near the hotel where you can easily spend 1-2 hours combing each shop. The clothes are really cheap, ranging around 150-300 Baht! If you're getting >3 pieces, you can get it at wholesale price which is around 20-30 Baht cheaper! There are only ladies apparels sold in that area though!

The shopping area spans a long street with side branching networks, and this long street leads all the way to Platinum shopping mall.

Placed my shopping loot back in the hotel before we set off to Chatuchak aka JJ Market!! Took another mode of transport available in BKK - Tuk Tuk!
The driver was really friendly and chatted with us along the way and sent us to Chatuchak for 40 Baht with supposedly 1 stop. For these drivers to earn extra $$, they would have to send us to these tourist spots and we would have to stay in there for around 10-15min. Previously when my brother took tuktuk, he went in and came out very quickly but the driver did not say anything. This time round, the driver "whined" that we came out too quickly and he can't get the extra cash so he drove us to another stop without us agreeing. We took tuktuk for the experience and according to my brother's experience, the younger drivers are usually more adventurous by taking the smaller lanes and driving in between cars.
The nearest BTS station to the more crowded side of Chatuchak
     Filled with locals and tourists

The quality of the clothes sold at Chatuchak is really quite good. We bought loads of apparel and accessories at cheap prices. As compared to Taiwan, the goods here are about 30-40% cheaper, especially for guys. You can get tees for less than $8, berms for less than $12. If you bother to bargain, you might get even better deals.

The sizes are also more SG friendly (me being plus sized myself). The place is really big, other than clothes/accessories, they do sell household items and pets there too. There are maps to aid your navigation, but in a nutshell, the market is made up of concentric lanes, and you can choose your route of advance in any way. Either comb outwards, or inwards, or clockwise, or counterclockwise. Just make it systematic so you don't miss any shops.
Thai Iced Tea - MUST DRINK! Different from the Teh Tarik we drink in SG because the tea taste is much stronger and really rich.
Popsicles - Great way to cool yourself down BKK's sunny weather. Personal Fav - Sprite!
Except for my heart dropping experience from eating chicken hearts (an accident which happened due to poor lighting), the street food all smelled pretty good. Downside was the difficulty of identifying what was what since everything was in Thai. Make sure you're buying what you want!

That aside, the chicken satay thinggy above tasted quite good, and the stall is quite a big one, near to the Kamphaeng Phet MRT. Only 25 Baht!

After 4-5 hours of non-stop shopping in Chatuchak, we explored 2 more modes of transport in BKK - BTS and MRT, to reach our dinner place at Thong Lor.
Single journey tickets costs around 15-40 Baht depending on the number of zones crossed
     Token to enter!
    Card to enter!
Make sure you download the system map before you travel to BKK.
The BTS/MRT stations do not show the full map!

My brother brought us to a restaurant that he visits very often - Thonkrueng
Vegetarian menu available at the restaurant!
No photos of the food cos we gobbled down our food as we were really hungry from all the walking! Nonetheless, the food was nice though there's lil variety. One thing to note is that their vege food doesn't seem to have egg, so if you want egg, you would need to indicate to them. As Thong Lor is an area where many expats live in, the staff there does understand some English (:

Green curry, pad thai, carrot cake (with peanuts sprinkled on top) and stir fried veggie were the dishes we had on our first visit. And we would return! Because their green curry is just so awesome. But then again, all green curry sold in Thailand seems to be awesome. In general Thai food, as most people know, would tend to be a little sour, and VERY spicy. So prepare your tastebuds! And if you do have a weak stomach, make sure you have some rice or carbs before you down the spicy dishes.

Cabbed back to the hotel as we were really tired. Stay tune to Day 2-4 in BKK! :D
