Drug Giants Accused Over Doctors 'Perks'

Drug companies are spending millions of pounds every year on all-expenses-paid trips to conferences around the world for doctors and other hospital staff, in what critics say is a massive marketing exercise dressed up as medical education.
The Guardian can reveal the scale of pharmaceutical company sponsorship following an examination of the registers of gifts and donations to doctors that all hospitals are required to keep. They show considerable largesse - from drug companies regularly picking up hefty bills for travel to international conferences in Europe, Asia and America, to specialist nurses' salaries, and weekly sandwich lunches for hospital staff training sessions.
All-expenses-paid trips to conferences in the US, Vietnam or Hungary are a regular feature of the registers, costing the companies up to £5,000 per doctor. Many of the declarations by doctors do not put a price on the trip. The total amounts received by staff at individual hospital trusts with complete registers are substantial - Sheffield's staff received funding of more than £105,000 from pharmaceutical and medical devices companies in the 12 months to last June.

£140,000 council chief goes on £5,000 course to protect herself against 'abrasions of the world'

A town hall boss is spending £5,000 of taxpayers money to go on a self-awareness training course in Germany and Florida to teach her to 'like herself'.
Dr Allison Fraser, who has been in charge of Sandwell Council in the West Midlands over the last two years, will attend courses in the Avatar Professional Course to learn how to become 'more likeable'.
Chief Executive Dr Fraser - who has an annual salary package of £140,000 - has already spent a week in Willingen, Germany earlier this month to take part in the first section of her course and will resume it in Orlando, Florida in October.
In Florida, she will discover if she can 'like herself' at the Rosen Plaza Hotel at the resort's International Drive.

Woman Arrested for Overdue Library Books

AUGUST 21--The next time you forget to return a couple of library books (and ignore those annoying letters about the overdue status of said volumes), think of Heidi Dalibor. The Wisconsin woman, 20, was arrested earlier this month in connection with a pair of books overdue for several months. Dalibor, who made the mistake of ignoring a court citation issued after she failed to respond to letters and phone calls from the Grafton library, was busted August 6 for failing to return copies of Janet Fitch's best-seller "White Oleander" (a 1999 Oprah Book Club selection) and "Angels & Demons," author Dan Brown's precursor to "The Da Vinci Code." According to a police report, Dalibor was apprehended at her family's home, cuffed and stuffed in a cruiser, and booked for violating the "overdue library materials" ordinance.

Three In Four Don't Trust Television

Only one in four of the population say they trust television, a year on from a series of rigged competition scandals and editorial deception.

Research by consultancy Deloitte shows that over a third of the public do not trust television, with a further third expressing no view either way, while only two per cent "strongly agree" that they trust British TV.
Last year saw a spate of scandals on some of the BBC’s biggest charity shows, Channel 4’s Richard and Judy, ITV’s Saturday night shows and a mis-leading BBC1 clip of the Queen.
ITV was fined a record £5.67 million in May for cheating viewers out of millions of pounds in premium-rate phone-in competitions.

A NSW couple are tonight in hiding after hospital doctors and the Department of Community Services took out a court order insisting that their baby, who is now only 48 hours old, be vaccinated against Hep B.
Steven and Cassandra* are the proud parents of baby Jonathan, born in Sydney on Tuesday this week. Cassandra had tested positive for Hep B several years ago and so, before leaving hospital with their newborn, she was advised to give the baby a Hep B vaccination. Having done her research, she believed that her child was at greater risk from the vaccine than from Hep B. She refused the shot as did her husband. After all, vaccination is not compulsory in Australia.

31 Palestinian civilians, including 10 children, and three international human rights defenders, were injured by IOF gunfire in the West Bank.
27 of these civilians were injured when IOF used force against 3 peaceful demonstrations organized in protest at the construction of the Annexation Wall in Ne’lin village, west of Ramallah.
IOF conducted 40 incursions into Palestinian communities in the West Bank.
IOF arrested 37 Palestinian civilians, including 10 children.
IOF raided and confiscated the equipments of three radio stations in Hebron.
IOF have continued to impose a total siege on the OPT, and have isolated the Gaza Strip from the outside world.
IOF troops positioned at various checkpoints in the West Bank arrested at least one Palestinian civilian.
IOF have continued settlement activities in the West Bank and Israeli settlers have continued to attacks Palestinian civilians and property.
IOF confiscated 6 donums[1] of land in Jenin and 1,500 square meters of land in the center of Hebron.

Police to Get £40 Million Mobile Fingerprinting Kit

'The Home Office is preparing to spend up to £40m on the roll out of a mobile biometric identification service.
The police are seeking the ability to provide real or near-real time identification of people at the scenes of incidents, through accessing fingerprint and other biometric information held by law and order agencies.
The government is calling for bidders for a framework agreement involving a maximum of 10 suppliers that will run for four years, with a possible two year extension to allow it to synchronise the contract with its Ident1, fingerprint recognition contract.
The project, dubbed “MIDAS,” follows on from the successful implementation of the Project Lantern mobile identification pilot schemes.
Project Lantern was mobile hand-held fingerprinting trial that enabled police officers to check a person’s identity in an operational environment and check them against the Ident1 national database.
The successful trial saw results returned, usually within a few minutes, and provided information to aid identification. The devices speeded up the process of establishing identity, and also allowed officers to make informed decisions by knowing whether an individual was wanted or dangerous.'

Or more than likely an innocent member of the public whose fingerprints are now on a national database and someone who has just had his civil liberties shredded

Every Petrol Pump 'Will be Prepay by 2011'

Every petrol pump in Britain will be prepay by 2011 because of the rise in fuel theft, say industry bosses.
The soaring cost of unleaded and diesel has seen an increase in instances of people driving off from forecourts without paying.
Petrol retailers say their fuel theft bill has risen by several million pounds.

The prepay system, where drivers have to swipe a debit or credit card at the pump before they can get any petrol, is already used widely in the U.S.

The amount the driver has spent is automatically deducted from the swiped card, making it impossible not to pay for filling up.
Some UK forecourts already have the prepay system, particularly those at supermarkets.
Petrol stations will still be manned by staff selling items from the shop, such as sweets, sandwiches and road maps.
Britain has not rushed to introduce the system because around one in three drivers still pay in cash.

BAE wins £3bn Ammunition Contract

Arms giant BAE Systems has signed a 15-year deal with the Ministry of Defence (MoD) to supply ammunition to British troops.
Defence officials said the contract, worth up to £3 billion, will ensure frontline forces have a secure supply of bullets.
The long-term agreement will also allow BAE to carry out much-needed modernisation work on munitions factories in the UK, some of which are relying on machinery dating back to the Second World War.
The announcement will safeguard 1,700 jobs at the firm's plants in Birtley, County Durham, Glascoed, South Wales, and Radway Green in Crewe.
A £120 million investment programme at the three sites will improve efficiency and make the facilities safer.
Under the arrangement, the firm will supply around 80% of the ammunition used by the military for operations and training, from 5.56mm bullets for the SA80 rifle to mortar rounds and artillery shells.
Senior MoD official Peter Northern said the Munition Acquisition Supply Solutions (Mass) agreement would help cope with the increased demand for ammunition as a result of operations in Iraq and Afghanistan.
He said it was "crucial" to award the contract to a UK company to protect against worldwide shortages in ammunition manufacturing capacity.
Colonel David Collins paid tribute to staff at the three plants for the way they had responded to the increased level of operations and training.
He said the factory in Crewe last year produced up to a million rifle and machine gun rounds a day, which was "quite a significant achievement".

So, a million rounds of ammunition a day and still that isnt enough. Just how many people are they intending to kill?

And so it goes on another £3 billion spent on war and murder while the population loses its homes, cant afford to feed its families, cant afford to go anywhere due to high fuel prices.

The Real World Order

On Sept. 11, 1990, U.S. President George H. W. Bush addressed Congress. He spoke in the wake of the end of Communism in Eastern Europe, the weakening of the Soviet Union, and the invasion of Kuwait by Saddam Hussein. After every major, systemic war, there is the hope that this will be the war to end all wars. The idea driving it is simple. Wars are usually won by grand coalitions. The idea is that the coalition that won the war by working together will continue to work together to make the peace. Indeed, the idea is that the defeated will join the coalition and work with them to ensure the peace. This was the dream behind the Congress of Vienna, the League of Nations, the United Nations and, after the Cold War, NATO. The idea was that there would be no major issues that couldn’t be handled by the victors, now joined with the defeated. That was the idea that drove George H. W. Bush as the Cold War was coming to its end.
Those with the dream are always disappointed. The victorious coalition breaks apart. The defeated refuse to play the role assigned to them. New powers emerge that were not part of the coalition. Anyone may have ideals and visions. The reality of the world order is that there are profound divergences of interest in a world where distrust is a natural and reasonable response to reality. In the end, ideals and visions vanish in a new round of geopolitical conflict.

War zone security has arrived in the US as cities are shut down at night by police struggling to control a deadly wave of gun crime. David Usborne reports from Hartford, Connectic

'The police state has not arrived quite yet but it may feel like it to the residents of some American cities, where a handful of embattled mayors and police chiefs are imposing strict and sometimes sweeping curfews as a last resort to quell new waves of gun violence this summer.
"We must do this because we cannot and will not tolerate innocent people, especially children, to be victims," insists Eddie Perez, the Mayor of Hartford, the capital of Connecticut, where a night-time curfew was introduced last week and will remain in effect for a month for those under 18 years old.
Nor are there any apologies from the authorities in Helena-West Helena on the banks of the Mississippi in Arkansas, small pockets of which are under a24-hour curfew that all ages must respect. Police are enforcing it, moreover, with night-vision goggles and M16 military rifles.'

Ofsted tells four-year-olds: your future is in peril

Children as young as four have been warned by school inspectors that they risk becoming failures in adult life because of the way they are taught.

Ofsted, the education watchdog, was accused of terrifying young children with the letters - which are sent to schools following inspections.
In an attempt to boost transparency, officials write to pupils in simple English telling them how well their school is performing.
Children at one primary school were warned that they were failing in the core subjects "and this means you are not well prepared for your next stage of education, nor your future adult lives".
The letter - sent to pupils at New Manton Primary in Worksop, Nottinghamshire - accuses youngsters of being "unsure about your targets and how to meet them".
It says that children, who are aged four to 11, should make more effort to behave in class and improve their writing.
New Manton was controversially placed in "special measures" following the inspection in February - even though Sats results doubled this year.
The letter ends: "Inspectors will be coming back to check that your school is improving. I would like you all to work hard and help your teachers make New Manton a better school."
But teachers and parents' groups are demanding that the letters are scrapped amid claims children are being over-burdened.

She is 5ft 5in and only seven stone, but Mia Cousins had no problem carrying bags of grass cuttings 50 yards from her garden to the roadside ready for disposal.
The same did not apply, however, to the four burly binmen on the council's 'green' collection run.
The three loaders and a driver left a note on the recycling sacks saying they had not been moved because they were too heavy. The council at Fareham, Hampshire, has defended its binmen claiming they were acting within their rights under Health and Safety Executive rules on ' excessive manual handling risks'.

Man arrested and locked up for five hours after taking photo of police van ignoring 'no entry' sign

When Andrew Carter saw a police van ignore no-entry signs to reverse up a one-way street to reach a chip shop, he was understandably moved to protest to the driver.
Particularly as he lives on the road and always goes out of his way to obey the signs.
But his complaint brought a volley of abuse from PC Aqil Farooq.
And when Mr Carter took a picture of the van then tried to photograph the officer, PC Farooq rushed out of the shop and knocked his camera to the ground.
Mr Carter was then arrested and bundled into the van over claims he had 'assaulted' an officer with his camera, resisted arrest and was drunk and disorderly.
He was held in a police cell for five hours before being released on bail at midnight.

Drinking fruit juice 'may stop medication working'

Drinking fruit juice dramatically reduces the effectiveness of drugs used to treat cancer, heart conditions and high blood pressure, scientists say.
Research has shown that orange, apple and grapefruit juice can also wipe out the benefits of some antibiotics and hay-fever pills.
It is thought the drinks stop drugs from entering the bloodstream and getting to work in the body - possibly rendering them useless.
The potential effects are so serious, researchers warned, that if in doubt, patients should swap fruit juices for water when on medication.

ID Card 'Propaganda' Backfires As Students Revolt

Trust Britain’s youth to be characteristically ungrateful. The Government goes to all the effort of making a website for 16 to 25- year-olds to express their views on identity cards, and all they get in return is a solid mixture of scorn, sneering and scepticism smattered across their fancy new forums.
In a bid to get the country’s youngsters on board the controversial scheme, the Home Office has launched MyLifeMyId.org, where 16 to 25 year olds “can have their say about identity issues in the UK.”
But anyone browsing the discussions on the site would be hard pushed to find a single positive comment, with contributors branding the controversial scheme as “creepy,” “dirty” and “illegal” and the website itself as an “online propaganda machine”.

Face Scanning Cameras To Replace Passport Control Officers

Passport control officers at airports are to be phased out as new biometric face scanning cameras are to be rolled out under new UK border control measures.
The scheme works by scanning passengers' faces and comparing them to photographs digitally stored on microchips in new biometric passports.
The technology, currently being trialed at Manchester airport is compatible with biometric passports issued throughout the EU, Norway, Switzerland and Iceland.
The system is optional for now, however, passengers opting to use more traditional methods will likely have to endure longer queues, where as those with biometric passports can walk straight through unmanned gates as long as they pass the detectors

'Russia To Deploy Missiles in Syria'

Russia plans to place its advanced missile systems in Syria to counter US and Israeli interventions in South Ossetia, an Israeli website says. DEBKAfile said in a report on its website that Moscow appears to be eying Poland, the Middle East, and possibly Ukraine, as the main arenas for its reprisals against Israel and the US for supplying arms to the Georgian army. "The retaliatory plan includes the establishment of big Russian military, naval and air bases in Syria and the release of advanced weapons systems including, the S-300 air-missile defense system, and the nuclear-capable Iskander to Syria," the report said on Tuesday.

Israel Raises Alarms of New Lebanon War

Israel threatens to wage a new war against Lebanon unless the country restrains Hezbollah from gaining more political power.
"If Hezbollah gains more strength, we will no longer place any limitations on ourselves," Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert warned at Home Front Command headquarters on Tuesday. He said, "In the Second Lebanon War we had much greater means and capabilities which we avoided using since we fought against an organization and not a country." Referring to future confrontations with Lebanon, Olmert said "We will be forced to bring a quick end to conflict, at the smallest possible cost, using our comparative advantage."

In his latest column for the New Statesman, John Pilger digs beneath the received wisdom for the break-up of Yugoslavia and points to a largely ignored memoir by the former chief prosecutor in The Hague - and an echo from current events in the Caucasus.

'The secrets of the crushing of Yugoslavia are emerging, telling us more about how the modern world is policed. The former chief prosecutor of the International Criminal Tribunal for Yugoslavia in The Hague, Carla Del Ponte, this year published her memoir The Hunt: Me and War Criminals. Largely ignored in Britain, the book reveals unpalatable truths about the west's intervention in Kosovo, which has echoes in the Caucasus.The tribunal was set up and bankrolled principally by the United States. Del Ponte's role was to investigate the crimes committed as Yugoslavia was dismembered in the 1990s. She insisted that this include Nato's 78-day bombing of Serbia and Kosovo in 1999, which killed hundreds of people in hospitals, schools, churches, parks and tele vision studios, and destroyed economic infrastructure. "If I am not willing to [prosecute Nato personnel]," said Del Ponte, "I must give up my mission." It was a sham. Under pressure from Washington and London, an investigation into Nato war crimes was scrapped.'

Police Invite Public to Shop Their Neighbours For Speeding

Speed guns and cameras may be ever-more advanced, but in the village of Swarland, they're catching out motorists with a more traditional device - the naked eye.
Police have asked residents to watch out for drivers who may be breaking the speed limit - and pass the details on.
The supposed offender will have their registration number, gender, and the date of alleged offence stored on a controversial police database.
If a motorist is reported twice, an officer will pay them a visit. If they are reported a third time, police will make them a target to look out for.

At JFK Airport, Denying Basic Rights Is Just Another Day at the Office

I was recently stopped by Homeland Security as I was returning from a trip to Syria. What I saw in the hours that followed shocked and disturbed me.

'I arrived at JFK Airport two weeks ago after a short vacation to Syria and presented my American passport for re-entry to the United States. After 28 hours of traveling, I had settled into a hazy awareness that this was the last, most familiar leg of a long journey. I exchanged friendly words with the Homeland Security official who was recording my name in his computer. He scrolled through my passport, and when his thumb rested on my Syrian visa, he paused. Jerking toward the door of his glass-enclosed booth, he slid my passport into a dingy green plastic folder and walked down the hallway, motioning for me to follow with a flick of his wrist. Where was he taking me, I asked him. "You'll find out," he said.
We got to an enclosed holding area in the arrivals section of the airport. He shoved the folder into my hand and gestured toward four sets of Homeland Security guards sitting at large desks. Attached to each desk were metal poles capped with red, white and blue siren lights. I approached two guards carrying weapons and wearing uniforms similar to New York City police officers, but they shook their heads, laughed and said, "Over there," pointing in the direction of four overflowing holding pens. I approached different desks until I found an official who nodded and shoved my green folder in a crowded metal file holder. When I asked him why I was there, he glared at me, took a sip from his water bottle, bit into a sandwich, and began to dig between his molars with his forefinger. I found a seat next to a man who looked about my age -- in his late 20s -- and waited.'

With every telephone call, swipe of a card and click of a mouse, information is being recorded, compiled and stored about Britain's citizens.
An investigation by The Sunday Telegraph has now uncovered just how much personal data is being collected about individuals by the Government, law enforcement agencies and private companies each day.
In one week, the average person living in Britain has 3,254 pieces of personal information stored about him or her, most of which is kept in databases for years and in some cases indefinitely.
The data include details about shopping habits, mobile phone use, emails, locations during the day, journeys and internet searches.

'David Cameron last night called for visa restrictions on Russian citizens wanting to visit Britain to punish Russia for its invasion of Georgia. The Tory leader also called for Moscow to be suspended from the G8 group of industrial nations and for its talks on a partnership agreement with the EU to be frozen.
Writing in the Sunday Times, Cameron said it was time for the international community to unite behind measures to show disapproval of Russia's actions.'

Council Bosses Threaten Children With Prosecution ... For Playing Football In The Street

Playing with a football in the street is a rite of passage for most young boys.
But in one particular town, a kickabout could land them on the wrong side of the law.
A council in Newark, Nottinghamshire, has sent out letters warning that children face prosecution and fines of up to £100 if they annoy neighbours with ball games.

The drive is being led by the council's anti- social behaviour co-ordinator, Lynn Pallett.
She said residents have complained of flowerbeds being trampled by children retrieving balls that have been kicked into gardens, while other householders have reported damage to vehicles parked outside their properties.
Some residents yesterday backed the clampdown, but others accused Newark and Sherwood District Council of 'using a sledge-hammer to crack a nut' and said that children should be encouraged to play outdoors.

MPs were last night accused of mounting a shameless cover-up operation to prevent voters from discovering the full truth about their lavish expenses.
This autumn, Commons authorities will for the first time release details of up to two million receipts submitted by MPs, covering claims for home improvements, furnishings and office costs.
But The Mail on Sunday can reveal that MPs have insisted on having the information censored – and in such a way that could save them from potential embarrassment.

Under the changes, the location of MPs’ taxpayer-funded second homes will be cut out while full travel details – including potentially extravagant taxi journeys – will also be exempt.
The decision to edit the claims was nodded through the Commons without a vote just before MPs broke up for the summer and came after women MPs apparently broke down in tears at the prospect of their personal details being released.
The change meant amending the Government’s flagship freedom of information legislation.

U.S. May Ease Police Spy Rules

'The Justice Department has proposed a new domestic spying measure that would make it easier for state and local police to collect intelligence about Americans, share the sensitive data with federal agencies and retain it for at least 10 years.
The proposed changes would revise the federal government's rules for police intelligence-gathering for the first time since 1993 and would apply to any of the nation's 18,000 state and local police agencies that receive roughly $1.6 billion each year in federal grants.
Quietly unveiled late last month, the proposal is part of a flurry of domestic intelligence changes issued and planned by the Bush administration in its waning months. They include a recent executive order that guides the reorganization of federal spy agencies and a pending Justice Department overhaul of FBI procedures for gathering intelligence and investigating terrorism cases within U.S. borders. '

Council warning to families guilty of neglect

Grossly overweight children may be taken from their families and put into care if Britain’s obesity epidemic continues to escalate, council chiefs said yesterday.
The Local Government Association argued that parents who allowed their children to eat too much could be as guilty of neglect as those who did not feed their children at all.
The association said that until now there had been only a few cases when social services had intervened in obesity cases. But it gave warning that local councils may have to take action much more often and, if necessary, put obese children on “at risk” registers or take them into care. It called for new guidelines to be drawn up to help authorities deal with the issue.

Dissent Is Essential to Democracy

So why are people being arrested for lawful protest?

The bulwark against tyranny is dissent. Open opposition, the right to challenge those in power, is a mainstay of any healthy democracy. The Democratic and Republican conventions will test the commitment of the two dominant U.S. political parties to the cherished tradition of dissent. Things are not looking good.
Denver's CBS4 News just reported that the city is planning on jailing arrested Democratic convention protesters at a warehouse with barbed-wire-topped cages and signs warning of the threat of stun gun use. Meanwhile, a federal judge has ruled that a designated protest area is legal, despite claims that protesters will be too far from the Democratic delegates to be heard.
The full spectrum of police and military will also be on hand at the Democratic convention in Denver, many of these units coordinated by a "fusion center." These centers are springing up around the country as an outgrowth of the post-9/11 national-security system. Erin Rosa of the online Colorado Independent recently published a report on the Denver fusion center, which will be sharing information with the U.S. Secret Service, the FBI and the U.S. Northern Command. The center is set up to gather and distribute "intelligence" about "suspicious activities," which, Rosa points out, "can include taking pictures or taking notes. The definition is very broad."

Angry Residents Barricade Bin Lorry

frustrated homeowner has told how she joined forces with neighbours to barricade a refuse lorry in a street in a dispute over uncollected rubbish.
Residents on Birks Road, Huddersfield, said they were forced into taking direct action after binmen refused to pick up a backlog of rubbish left after last month's strikes.
The homeowners claim that after the two-day strike the bins were being emptied as normal but any loose rubbish bags were being left to rot at the side of the road.
Children and parents from the quiet cul-de-sec formed a human chain around the large truck to stop it driving away while another resident blocked the road with his car.

The families said they acted on the spur of the moment on Wednesday and were forced to block the lorry after the binmen refused to pick up around eight bags.
