In the debate over on Huffpo, the traditional Bellisiles based claim that 'firearms were rare and expensive so the Gov't armed most of the militia was made'. I asked for a source and was given by a different poster this quote from Henry Knox in 1794:
"The deficiency of arms cannot be more forcibly exemplified than that, to arm the militia lately called into service, estimated at fifteen thousand, the number of ten thousand arms have been issued from the public Arsenals. Loss and injury must be expected to arise upon the articles issued."
This would make it seem that 'only' 5,000 out of 15,000 volunteers came w/ their own arms. Looking up the quote in the Congressional Annals (3rd congress, Appendix pg. 1399) shows the statement, when taken w/ the rest of the report, in a different context altogether:
"The numbers comprehended in the act, from eighteen to forty-five years of age, inclusively, deducting the exempts and mariners, may be estimated probably at about four hundred and fifty thousand men. Of these, probably not one hundred thousand are armed as the act requires, although a greater number might be found of common and ordinary muskets without bayonets."
So, Knox was NOT saying that 10,000 men showed up w/o firearms but that they did not meet the standards of the 1792 Militia Act, notably a Musket/Firelock/Rifle, Bayonet, and no less than 24 rounds. He also recommended that manufactures should be established in the US to increase the number of suitable firearms available.
So we had the Founding Fathers recommending that people should own not only hunting rifles but military grade firearms and that the laws should be strengthened to make people do so.

Maybe they met Weena
Since the Brady Campaign is full of such technical experts that they can design and build functioning time machines, how is it that they can't even get the basics of firearm laws accurate?

Voodoo thinking..
One of the laws that Illinois has on the books makes it illegal for female minors to receive abortions w/o parental notification. As a parent I think this is a good idea. Unfortunately, some people do not and the law is currently being blocked. Now I support the idea of the law and am not up on all the particulars so the blocking may be legitimate. I'm not going to comment on that at this time and I am pro-choice.
However, this is why I think the concept is valid:
New York Man Used Voodoo Threats to Scare Teen Girls Into Rape 'Rituals'
The title says it all. Old pervert tells teen girls he'll give them nice things if they perform sex voodoo w/ him and bad things will happen if they don't. They did.
Jamie Lynn's Birth Fears
Now 17 yr old Spears watches birth video and can't handle it. There's a reason 16 year old girls shouldn't get pregnant. And please don't tell me that all babies are miracles from God. A miracle from God is when a butterfly lands on a retarded kid's arm or when the cops don't find the hooker you buried, not when a drunk hillbilly forgets to pull out*.
Just like I have no problems w/ minors not handling firearms unsupervised, especially in todays world, anyone that tries to tell me that my 14 year old should be allowed to get a medical procedure done not only w/o my consent but no notification are the ones that need psychological exams. Not only is this due to the fact that I'm ethically and morally responsible for the health and welfare of my children, I'm legally responsible as well. How can some people justify supporting laws making parents accountable for their kids committing criminal acts and then turn around and claim that children should be allowed to make potentially life-altering decisions?
The mind reels.
*blatantly plagiarized.

And another one bites the dust...
The Truth About Guns in America (according to the Brady Campaign) is the alleged last post of the anti-gun "Right or Privilege" blog. In typical "Reasoned Discourse" fashion, he closes out w/ a video that covers all the standard Brady Bunch talking points that have been shown to be false in his previous threads plus a couple of new ones.
Did you know that Bush and congresspersons (all in the pay of the NRA) actively voted to strike down the Clinton AWB?
Neither did I.
Why?
Because it didn't happen.
This is the face of gun control advocates and a stereotypical "authorized journalist student".
Bye Danny. Don't let the door hit you on the way out. Make sure to stop by and tell us what grade you got.

What do you do in a state budget crisis?
A time when they're cutting funding to education and the state is months behind on paying its bills? Why advocate your own personal "economic stimulus package" by giving yourself a raise. At least that's IL Senate President Emil Jones's idea.
"I need a pay raise,"
And he doesn't even have to do anything to get one.

Yeah, he supports the Second Amendment
Which is why Barack "El Duce" Obama now has Rev. Michael "Snuffy" Pfleger as an advisor. You remember him, right? The same one who called for people to drag firearm dealers and pro-rights legislators out into the streets and "snuff" them?

Trust the lists..
They'll keep dangerous people out of the country, off planes, and unable to purchase firearms. Just like these highly suspect individuals:
False identifications based on a terrorist no-fly list have for years prevented some federal air marshals from boarding flights they are assigned to protect, according to officials with the agency, which is finally taking steps to address the problem.
Federal Air Marshals (FAMs) familiar with the situation say the mix-ups, in which marshals are mistaken for terrorism suspects who share the same names, have gone on for years — just as they have for thousands of members of the traveling public.
"In some cases, planes have departed without any coverage because the airline employees were adamant they would not fly," said the air marshal, who asked not to be named because the job requires anonymity. "I've seen guys actually being denied boarding."
Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff said this week that one major air carrier reports roughly 9,000 false positive hits on the watch list every day.
The Brady Campaign has no problem w/ people being denied rights and having even more lists made based off of these which have over a 10% error rate.

One letter short of IDIOT
The Illinois Department of Transportation (IDiOT) has shown they have no sense of humor. The township of Oak Lawn added slogans such as "and smell the roses" and "means that you aren't moving" to the bottom of 50 stop signs. They were cute. They were funny. They got people to pay attention to STOP signs. IDiOT couldn't have that so ordered them removed.
One commenter put it plainly:
Contrary to the appearance given in this story, the most efficient and vigilant IDOT certainly does have a sense of humor.
One need simply look at the condition of the roads in Illinois to discern how very madcap these folks can be.

NYC lawsuit dismissed...
NYC Loses Lawsuit Against Gun Industry
NEW YORK (AP) -- A federal appeals court has tossed out New York City's lawsuit claiming the gun industry markets weapons with the knowledge that they could be diverted into illegal markets.
The 2nd Circuit Court of Appeals in Manhattan ruled Wednesday that a federal law provides the gun industry with broad immunity from lawsuits brought by crime victims and violence-plagued cities.
A Brooklyn judge had allowed the lawsuit to proceed, though it had not yet reached trial.
New York is one of several cities which had sued gun makers. It said the industry violated public nuisance law by allowing widespread access to illegal firearms.
The lawsuit asked for no money damages. It sought a court order for gun makers to more closely monitor those dealers who frequently sell guns later used to commit crimes.
Take that and stuff it Bloomie.
Link to the opinion.
The NRA response:
“Today’s dismissal of this bogus lawsuit against America’s firearm industry is an important victory,” declared Chris W. Cox, executive director for the National Rifle Association (NRA). “New York City’s lawsuit was a politically motivated attack by an anti-gun mayor to bankrupt a lawful industry.”
NSSF response:
Today’s ruling is very gratifying to members of the firearms industry. In passing the Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act, Congress understood that frivolous lawsuits like New York City’s defied common sense and represented a clear abuse of the judicial system that threatened to bankrupt a responsible and law-abiding industry.”

Another "ban all guns" letter in The Chicago trib. It clearly shows that some people should be licensed for their 1st Amendment rights as well.
The best idea Mayor Daley ever had was the total handgun ban.
What's wrong with that? Well the closing of the registration offices occurred in April of 1982. Who was the mayor then? Jane Byrne. Daley Jr. didn't become mayor till '89.
If they could only get the basics correct.

Lautenberg says..
“It makes no sense to destroy data that links a gun purchase to its buyer and seller,”
Sure it does Senator. You prove it with every bill you propose. The last paragraph says it all:
Sen. Lautenberg is a long-time advocate forgun bans and confiscation responsible gun safety measures. He has recently introduced legislation that would deny the sale of firearms to suspected terrorists and close a loophole that allows guns to be sold at gun shows without a background check.
No 4th Amendments for you while he supports lawsuits against those conducting those background checks.
Of course the 'usual suspects' have signed on:
Sen. Robert Menendez (D-NJ), Carl Levin (D-MI), Joseph Lieberman (ID-CT), Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI), Dianne Feinstein (D-CA), Jack Reed (D-RI) and Charles Schumer (D-NY).
Armed and Safe has more.
BTW, check out the name of the bill. They probably pay people to come up w/ these.

US Dept of Interior is proposing changes to CCW in National Parks making the laws uniform. They allow 60 days for public comment.
Information on the proposed changes available here.
15 years ago we were losing the battle to own semi-auto firearms. Now the anti's are fighting to keep CCW out of schools and National Parks.
Things could be worse.

911 the Anti Freedom people say we must rely on it.
I wonder what Paul, Bryan, Josh and the rest of the people hating elite would offer for an excuse for this.
When you dial 911 (government dial a prayer) what do you expect other than a rude person on the phone and a cop in your driveway, with luck before any bad things has happened to you.
God forbid this is what you get when you dial 911.
(Lisa tells the operator she was robbed at gunpoint earlier in the evening, and that she now hears someone trying to break into our home.
"I just heard tapping on my window," she tells the operator. "I need somebody over here."
The line goes silent. As Lisa continues to explain her situation, the dispatcher does not respond - not for just 15 or 30 seconds, but for one full minute.
Then, sounds of snoring can be heard on the line.
"Are you there?" Lisa asks.
"Yes ma'am," the operator replies. "What is the, um, what's your address?"
Lisa can then be heard hanging up the phone)

Bait n Switch
Bryan Miller's latest post takes a page from the VPC playbook by hoping you don't actually look at the cites and changing terminology to confuse people.
Bryan:The United States has, by far, the highest rate of gun homicide among those countries commonly known as industrialized, namely Organization for Ecomonic Cooperation and Development (OECD) members
Actually, according to his own linked IANSA document, Mexico, an OECD member since '94) is considered "industrialized" and has a higher per capita homicide rate than the US. 5.11 vs 3.92. Brazil, Russia, and South Africa are also considered "industrialized" (all G8+5 members), are not members of the OECD , strict gun control laws, and have much higher firearm homicide rates than the US "by far". 21.07,(homicide around 20/100K) , 22.04.
Of course this gets in to the debate that "industrialization" somehow equates to moral and ethical values as there are many non-industrialized countries that suffer from high crime/homicide rates as well as the opposite.
But don't let facts get in the way of a good rant.
It also is noted that Bryan changed terminology from "gun deaths" as listed in the VPC "report" to "gun homicides".
Bryan:the five US states with the lowest per capita rates of gun homicide also have low rates of gun ownership
VPC: Washington, DCStates in the South and West with weak gun laws and high rates of gun ownership lead the nation in overall firearm death rates according to a new analysis issued today by the Violence Policy Center (VPC) of Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) data.
So Bryan, was the change intentional or did you just "mis-state" it?
SIH has more.

Homeland Security to Unveil Plan to Guard Against Small Boat Attacks
WASHINGTON — As boating season approaches, the Bush administration wants to enlist the country's 80 million recreational boaters to help reduce the chances that a small boat could deliver a nuclear or radiological bomb somewhere along the country's 95,000 miles of coastline and inland waterways.
but on the other rudder:
While the government insists there will be no federal license, the strategy suggests that the government consider registering and regulating recreational boats.
So when will we hear the first calls to ban "assault row-boats" or that only members of the "well regulated militia" have the right to own small boats ?

Zorn says we're winning...
and explains why:
Gun-control advocates are weak.
He's discovered the same thing as Laura Washington over in the Sun-Times. Not only are there less of them, but the majority of their arguments are based on emotion and often hypocritical. Basing your ideology on that wears thin to the public after time. You can only cry "the sky is falling" so many times before people stop listening. It also doesn't help when the majority of funding comes not from public supporters (aka grassroots) but from multi-millionaire advocacy organizations and individuals (Joyce Foundation, George Soros).
