Crochet Hearts Tutorial

the heart garland is finished and very much to my liking I must add. thank you all for thinking along, suggesting good ideas and supporting me.

it was not the typical start-and-there-you-go project. it was more the this-might-not-work-out-at-all project. which makes me extra happy it did work out.

I ended up combining three different types of yarn ~ Scheepjeswol soft fun, Einband and Léttlopi yarns, and two different techniques ~ crochet around wire and felting. the how-to details of each heart are written in the image below and the crochet pattern in both English and Nederlands for the felt hearts can be found at the bottom of this post.

the hearts are joined with a needle and some thread, just 2 stitches per joint somewhere in the top half of the sides, I didn't count the stitches for this. just eye ball it and it will work out perfectly.
the felt hearts may seem a little long at first, however when you hang the garland they will be stretched. if they stretch too much to your liking, you can always add a little wire at the back. I alternated wire and felt hearts for more stability and it seems to work.

the wire hearts are done on a very thin and flexible iron wire. crochet single crochet or half double crochet stitches around the wire until the length is enough to make a heart shape. join the wire ends, shape into a heart (or something else of course) and weave in the ends.

well, I am ready for Valentine! I hope you'll enjoy the patterns.

Happy Valentine to you xo

the poster is from a fashion magazine, probably 2 years old. most likely the adjacent page gave information of the artist/ author, but I didn't keep it. unfortunately I can't give you more information on that.

pattern medium heart:

1 ~ chain 60, close with slip stitch in first chain. make sure the chain does not turn!
2 ~ chain 1, single crochet (replace single crochet with half double crochet in this pattern if you'd like a thicker texture) in the next 20 stitches
3 ~ 2 single crochet stitches in the next 3 stitches
4 ~ single crochet in the next 4 stitches
5 ~ crochet the next 2 stitches together (insert hook in stitch, yarn over and pull through, insert hook in next stitches, yarn over and pull through, yarn over and pull through all loops on hook)
6 ~ skip 2 stitches
7 ~ chain next 2 stitches together. you have now created the centre of the heart. the pattern will repeat in reverse:
8 ~ single crochet in the next 4 stitches
9 ~ 2 single crochet stitches in the next 3 stitches
10 ~ single crochet in the next 20 stitches, close with slip stitch in first single crochet. weave in ends, machine wash on 40 C on a short cycle. repeat cycle if you like it to felt more. note: don't wash the heart by itself in the machine, always add a towel or two. hold the heart in a little laundry bag like you use for bra's and stockings.

pattern large heart:

1 ~ chain 80, close with slip stitch in first chain. make sure the chain does not turn!
2 ~ chain 1, single crochet (replace single crochet with half double crochet in this pattern if you'd like a thicker texture) in the next 25 stitches
3 ~ 2 single crochet stitches in the next 4 stitches
4 ~ single crochet in the next 8 stitches
5 ~ crochet the next 2 stitches together (insert hook in stitch, yarn over and pull through, insert hook in next stitches, yarn over and pull through, yarn over and pull through all loops on hook)
6 ~ skip 2 stitches
7 ~ chain next 2 stitches together. you have now created the centre of the heart. the pattern will repeat in reverse:
8 ~ single crochet in the next 8 stitches
9 ~ 2 single crochet stitches in the next 4 stitches
10 ~ single crochet in the next 25 stitches, close with slip stitch in first single crochet. weave in ends, machine wash on 40 C on a short cycle. repeat cycle if you like heart to felt more. note: don't wash the heart by itself in the machine, always add a towel or two. hold the heart in a little laundry bag like you use for bra's and stockings.

patroon medium hart:

My Heart…

the crochet hearts story continues. my plan was to crochet hearts and hang them as a garland for Valentine. I wanted to make silhouette hearts, instead of the hearts we usually crochet like these ones.

so far I am not too happy with the results. the Einband heart is done with single crochet stitches around a little iron wire and then shaped into a heart. I quite like it.
the soft fun by Scheepjeswol heart was done with a chain, then single crochet into each chain, 2 single crochet in the top 3 stitches of each heart-top, skipping stitches in the middle. I find it ok, but not really nice.
the lettlopi heart is a long row of chain stitches, then single crochet around that chain. by moving the stitches closer together or wider apart, you create curves. hmmmm, I find it the least successful heart.

what I do like about the hearts is their different textures, the combine really nice and make the single coloured hearts quite interesting I find.

what do you think? with which one should I continue? or let them all go and start a new version?
my idea is to try the wire heart with both other yarns, and try to felt the lettlopi heart and block it in the right shape. do you think that will work?

any advice is very welcome, I'm a bit stuck with these hearts.

New Yarn for Valentine

are you slowly getting in Valentine's mood too?

I got some cozy new yarns for a little Valentine project. all creamy white, there's SoftFun by Scheepjeswol, and two types of wool: Einband and Léttlopi from Iceland.

the idea I have in mind is to crochet a little heart garland of heart silhouettes. the kind of long shaped, Scandinavian looking hearts I like so much. let's see how this will work out. both wool yarns are good for felting too, that might be interesting to try. also, another idea I have is to crochet around a little wire and shape that into hearts. as usual, plenty of ideas and possibilities…

clearly I lost myself when we finally got to see mr. Sunshine today, some perfect light to take pictures. hope you'll enjoy them

Update on Grandma's Crochet Potholders

* there's no black yarn in this post, even though it may seem so. it is all blue, one of them beautiful dark blue *

last week in this post I showed you my new project: crocheting after my grandma's potholders with SoftFun yarn by Scheepjeswol. what I didn't tell you is that my dad has five sisters, my aunts. so I can see a lot of crochet potholders in my future…

I finished one ahead of the others, to see if I could work out this pattern in the first place. it has some tricky parts in the white edging, but it worked out pretty well I think. it's a little larger than the original one my grandma made and I like that. to be honest the original was a little too small, not so practical in my opinion.

I started the fun with lots of colours and combinations. the first ones all blue, and one with the variegated yarn. I am not too keen on that one, but I may have to finish the whole potholder in that yarn to see the full effect? what do you think about the variegated one?

but, since it is December, I couldn't stop myself and added some red and green to the palette.

yes, now that sparkles the festive holiday spirit, right?

wait a second…. sparkle? all right, I ploughed through my stash and dug up some thin gold and silver thread. now the real fun begins. a little kitsch may be yes, but that could be nice if used only a few weeks every year, I figured.

dark blue and gold, now with a green edge to set it off. white and silver, probably ending up with a bright blue edge for that kitsch feeling. what do you think? I am having fun, that's for sure. and as a result, I have lots of chances to test my own pattern. a new potholder pattern that I would love to share with you soon. that will allow you to crochet some last minute Christmas gifts?

my bet is every host would smile instantly when she unwraps a beautiful set of handmade-by-you potholders with a little sparkle in the middle…

or, as I am looking at them now, I am thinking they could be cute decorations for your tree or garland too, just like this? ooooh the possibilities. crochet and yarn have not let me down for that matter yet!

Cozy Crochet with New Yarn

how I love this time of year. warm by the fireplace, candle light most times of the day, fifties Christmas music through the speakers… hmmm can't get cozy enough if you ask me! of course a little bit of crochet goes perfectly well with this.

so here I go, starting a new project just in time before Christmas with Scheepjeswol Softfun yarn. it's a mix of 60% cotton and 40% acrylic yarn. usually I don't work with a mix yarn, but this would be the perfect yarn for washable potholders to keep their bright colours.

for the pattern I send an email out to my dad's sisters, to see if they had any potholders left that were made by their mother, my grandma. and look! I am stepping in my grandmothers' footsteps and making the same potholders. I think a lot of her while I try to come up with a pattern through trial and error. where did she find the pattern? how many has she crocheted of these? did she enjoy it?

these beautiful cool blue tones remind me of peacock feathers… ooooh the possibilities
if you're looking for me, I am crocheting by candle light, working up a pattern for the both of us

Crochet Pattern and Yarn Give Away

it's here, the second pattern for fingerless gloves I made with Invicta Colour yarn from Scheepjeswol. and the pattern didn't come alone… there's a give away too! edit: this give away is no longer active.

just in time for the holidays, one ball of this delicate variegated yarn will provide you with enough yarn to make either the bobble stitch gloves, or the wave stitch gloves in this post. the gloves would make a perfect Christmas or Sinterklaas gift, and of course they would look beautiful on your own wrists too and keep you warm while you do all the shopping and wrapping.

click on the image or this link to get to the Scheepjeswol Facebook page and find out how to win*!
enter before December 13th 2013. edit: give away is no longer active

to set things straight, I didn't design this pattern completely by myself, I used this pattern as the base for these gloves. since this pattern is written for back and forward stitching like you'd do with a blanket, I had to figure out how to make the stitches match in the round. the pattern for that part is drawn out below. and I must say it wasn't easy, but I love it. I will for sure make more of these this Winter.

the row numbers in the text relate to the numbers in the diagram.

to make these wave stitch gloves, you need one skein Scheepjeswol Invicta colour #966
hook: size 3 mm

if you're interested in making these gloves with hook size 4 mm and accompanying yarn, please have a look here at the adjusted pattern by Deborah on her pretty blog. she even wrote the crochet chart in a professional software program. just fabulous, make sure to have a look.

this pattern is based on a stitch count of clusters of 10. casting on 50 stitches gave me a little loose but comfy glove. you might have to cast on 60 stitches to get a nice fit too. keep in mind that, as apposed to the bobble stitch gloves, I find these gloves don't give as much when you start wearing them. the width they have when you start crocheting is pretty much their final width.

let's get started!

chain 50, join into a ring with slip stitch in first chain, make sure to keep the chain straight not twisted, when you join

1. *single crochet, chain 1, skip one, 1 single crochet. skip 3 stitches, in the next stitch make 3 double crochet, 1 chain, 3 double crochet. skip 3 stitches* and repeat between * all around. join with slip stitch in first single crochet.

2. single crochet in the gap, *in the chain gap make half double crochet, chain, half double crochet. chain 3, in the chain gap on top of the wave make a single crochet,  chain 3* repeat between * all around. join with slip stitch in the first half double crochet.

3. single crochet in the gap between the half double crochet stitches, chain 4 (counts as 1 double crochet and 1 chain), 3 double crochet in the same gap. *single crochet just before the single crochet of the previous row, chain 1, single crochet just after the single crochet from the previous row. in the next gap between the half double crochet stitches, make 3 double crochet, chain 1, 3 double crochet*, repeat between * all around. end with 2 double crochet in the first gap, join with slip stitch in 3rd chain of the first 4.

4. *single crochet in the gap on the top of the wave, chain 3, in the next chain gap make half double crochet, chain, half double crochet. chain 3*, repeat between * all around. join with slip stitch in the first single crochet.

5. chain 2, single crochet in the gap. *in the next gap between the half double crochet stitches of the previous row make 3 double crochet, chain, 3 double crochet, single crochet just before the single crochet of the previous row, chain 1, single crochet just after the single crochet from the previous row* and repeat between * all around. join with slip stitch in the first chain.

now, repeat rows 2 to 5 as often as you please, or until you find your wrist part to be long enough. I would say continue until row 29 with this pattern. at that point you should leave a gap for your thumb. to do so, follow the pattern as shown in this diagram for about 7 or 9 rows. this pattern is worked back and forth instead of in the round. then switch back to the diagram above in the round for another 5 rows to close the glove. end with row 3 or 5. of course you can decide to leave the thumb out and continue crocheting in the round to create sleeves. have a look here for an example of those sleeves.

to crochet a thumb, up to your own size standards, make a wave in the opening between the waves of the glove and continue the pattern as described above for as long as you please.

this should do it! I love the variegation of the Invicta Colour yarn in this pattern. it is a little slower than the bobble stitch gloves, simply because it uses less yarn. that said, it makes sense the bobble stitch gloves feel a little warmer and thicker. it is really up to your personal taste which pattern you choose.

if you'd like a little different design: I was thinking you could also use a nice dark blue, black or brown, and crochet the glove all the way up to 3 rows after the thumb and crochet the last few rows in cream white for a nice touch?

I hope you'll enjoy both patterns as much as I do, please let me know if you have any questions.
and don't forget to enter the Scheepjeswol yarn give away* before December 13, you might just win a ball of this pretty wool! eeeek! I am crossing my fingers for you.

* sorry non-EU girls, the give away is for European entries only

Fingerless Gloves Crochet Pattern

the crochet pattern for the bobble stitch fingerless gloves, yay!

yarn: one skein Scheepjeswol Invicta colour #966
hook: size 3 mm

the images in this pattern are done with a different yarn that shows better. for a quick pattern guide and the crochet diagrams, scroll down.

when looking at the images, please keep in mind I am left handed.

1. chain 40, join into a ring with slip stitch in first chain, make sure to keep the chain straight not twisted, when you join

2. chain 2, half double crochet in the next 39 stitches, join with slip stitch in second chain stitch. work round 2, 3 and 4 while facing the outside of the glove

now try to fit the ring on your wrist. you can add stitches if it's too tight, or loose some stitches if it's too loose. add or loose in clusters of 2 stitches to keep the pattern in tact. keep in mind the glove will loosen  a little bit after you start wearing it.

in row 3 and 4, make sure to pick up the right 'stitch' as explained in picture 1 and 2 below, to make sure you get the nice line.

3. same as row 2
3. hetzelfde als rij 2

4. same as 2
4. hetzelfde als rij 2

5. turn your work. you are now crocheting facing the inside of your glove, so the bobbles will pop out on the outside of the glove. chain of 3, *bobble stitch, chain, skip one* all around. bobble stitch is done as follows: make a double crochet and don't get to the final yarn over, pull through 2 stitches. it now looks like image 4 with 2 loops left on hook.

6. repeat the double crochet 4 times and keep the last loop of every stitch on the hook, you now have 6 loops on hook as shown in image 5.

7. yarn over and pull through all 6 loops in once. chain. it now looks like image 6.

8. make sure to join the row of bobbles in the top of the first bobble stitch, as pointed out in image 7. crochet a slip stitch in that stitch and your row is finished, looking like image 8.

9. start a new row with 2 chain, followed by 39 half double crochet stitches. close with slip stitch in second chain. as in image 9.

10. to make sure the bobbles alternate, crochet the next row of bobbles as follows. chain 3, *skip one, bobble stitch, chain* and repeat between * 3 times. skip one and crochet a fifth bobble and join with slip stitch in third chain. result shown in image 10.

QUICK GUIDE PATTERN
all right, once you get the idea about the stitch into the right stitch and the bobble stitch, let's make this a quick pattern.
* crochet row 1 through 9 as shown in the diagram below and don't forget to turn your work for the rows of half double crochet
* repeat row 2 through 9 twice
* repeat row 2 through 6

SNELLE PATROON BESCHRIJVING
*herhaal rij 2 t/m 9 twee keer
*herhaal rij 2 t/m en 6

crochet diagram for the first part of the glove, the bottom.

*the next rows are done by going back and forth instead of in the round, to create a gap for your thumb. 4 rows of bobble stitches, with 3 rows of half double crochet in between as shown in the diagram below. pay attention to how the row ends and beginnings are done, for alternating bobbles. in rows 1, 5, 9 and 13, start with 2 chain and 4 bobble stitches, which count as 5 for one bobble, end with a double crochet in the same stitch as the last bobble. in rows 3, 7, 11 and 15 start with 3 chain, skip one and make the first bobble in the next stitch, end with a bobble in the last stitch.

* the final rows are worked in the round again. 3 times a row of half double crochet, alternated with 3 rows of bobble stitch according to row 4 through 9 in the first diagram close up. fasten off.

now, if you'd like to crochet a little thumb, crochet a bobble stitch in the gap between every two bobbles of the glove. crochet 2 bobbles in the bottom of the gap. work 2 more rows of half double crochet alternated with bobble stitches. or as far as you'd like the thumb to go.

and you are done! one more to go and you'll have warm cozy hands this Winter
