LeapPad Platinum review

LeapPad Platinum

When LeapFrog came up with the LeapPad Ultra in 2013, I was blown away by how much better it was than previous LeapPad versions. Nearly 2 years later, when I heard that LeapFrog was coming up with a newer version of the LeapPad -- the LeapPad Platinum -- I was so excited to see what improvements they would come up with and what new bells and whistles it would come with. When LeapFrog sent me a review unit to try out, I decided to gift it to my 5 year-old niece.

LeapPad Platinum

PROS:
My nieces loves her new LeapPad Platinum! Her eyes lit up when she first saw it, and now she carries it around with her everywhere and calls it her special iPad. She plays on her parents' tablet and phones all the time, so she was able to get up and running and start having fun on the LeapPad Platinum right away. She loves taking selfies of herself and her little sister just like her parents do on their phones!

The new Imagicard feature (a set of special cards that kids can scan into the LeapPad Platinum and have the characters on the cards come to life on the LeapPad Platinum) is icing on the cake. She's already a big fan of Paw Patrol, so she was amazed that she could scan Imagicard with the LeapPad Platinum and see her favorite Paw Patrol characters join the videogame she is playing.

I've always said that the LeapPad is the perfect kid-friendly tablet and the perfect alternative to letting your kids play on your phone or tablet, and the new Platinum version is no different. It really does give kids hours of educational fun right out of the box, without any of the set-up headaches that plague parents when they try to make their devices kid-safe.

LeapPad Platinum

CONS:
Most of the features found in the LeapPad Platinum are the exact same features that I was so excited to see on the Ultra: the 7" hi-res screen, 8 GB memory, Wifi capability, kid-safe browser, 2MP front and back camera, 480p video, accelerometer, rechargeable battery.

The battery life of the Platinum (5 hrs) is actually less than the Ultra (8hrs)! I was disappointed to see that the Platinum was so similar to the Ultra.

Pretty much the only new feature is the Imagicard technology. Don't get me wrong, Imagicard is an awesome technology and it certainly enhances the educational and entertainment experience for kids.... but the Platinum sells for $129, whereas the Ultra can be found on sale for $64.99 (it originally sold for $149). Is the LeapPad Platinum worth the price premium? You decide!

Be dazzled by the Disneyland Diamond Celebration Merchandise

It's a shopper's paradise at the Disneyland Resort this year, because it's Disneyland's 60th Anniversary, and the Diamond Celebration Merchandise collection has hit stores around the resort! Over the course of the celebration, Disney will release more than 500 merchandise items, including apparel, accessories, headwear, home décor, souvenirs, toys, pins, D-Tech, collectibles and more.

On our recent trip to the Disneyland Resort, the boys and I had the chance to meet with Summer from Disney's Merchandising Department, to take a look at some of the merchandise that Disney has released for the Diamond Celebration.  These items are now on sale, only at the Disneyland Resort, for a limited time.

Check out our video below!  It was so much fun going through the whole table of items!  My favorite has got to be the Dooney and Burke shopper tote.

Take a closer look at some of the items that Summer showed us in the video:

Mickey and Minnie Diamond Anniversary plush

Caramel apples, cake pops, marshmallow wands, photo album, autograph book, mug, and popcorn bucket (you can see more special popcorn buckets in my Disneyland Diamond Celebration Treats post).

The Diamond Celebration version of the classic Mickey ears.

This is the Made With Magic paintbrush that Jammy was holding. Turn it on, and the tip glows with changing colored lights.  Press the button with the magic wand icon in order to change the color of the Made With Magic Mickey Ears and Made With Magic Mickey Mitt.

That's only a small subset of the items available!

Items for the home include pillows, frames, blankets, and mugs.

Fashion items include shirts, sweatshirts, hoodies, caps, hats, scarves, and jewelry.

I couldn't resist trying on the sparkly Minnie ears!

Pins, pins, pins!  You know we love trading pins!  The 60th Anniversary pins are a great commemorative item because they are so inexpensive, starting at just $9.95 for a pin, $9.95 for a lanyard, and $5.95 for a plastic pouch.  Stay tuned for a separate post featuring a closer look at the 60th Anniversary pins!

Which Diamond Celebration merchandise item would you most like to own?

CLIF Kid ZBar snacks -- the perfect party treat (and a giveaway for you!)

CLIF Kid organic snacks

Birthday parties are notorious for serving junk food. I'll be the first to admit that cake, ice cream, candy are staples of all my kids' birthday parties.  But as with everything in life, moderation is key, and I always like to balance the junk food that I serve with healthy food.  That's why CLIF Kid snacks are so great -- as far as kids are concerned, they're treats, but parents love them because they're  a healthy snack made with wholesome, organic ingredients.  We recently held a DisneySide party to celebrate my son's 11th birthday, and CLIF Kid generously supplied us with some of our favorite CLIF Kid snacks.  Check out all the CLIF Kid goodies we enjoyed at the party:

CLIF Kid ZBar Protein bars are the perfect healthy treats for growing kids, because each one contains a whopping 5 grams of protein and 3 grams of fiber.  CLIF Kid only uses organic ingredients so you can feel good about serving your kids healthy, wholesome food.
CLIF Kid ZBar Protein organic snacks

We received a box of the Peanut Butter Chocolate flavor (photo above) and 2 boxes of the Chocolate Chip flavor.  My kids love the flavors (my favorite is the Peanut Butter Chocolate) and think they're as good as any bakery treat.
CLIF Kid ZBar Protein organic snacks

Instead of fruit gummies or fruit chews, why not serve CLIF Kid ZFruit & Veggie ropes? They're tangy and chewy and kids love them.  Unlike most fruit snacks, these also contain real veggies -- sweet potato juice, sweet potato puree, carrot puree, red beet juice concentrate -- for an ever bigger health punch. We received 3 flavors -- Cheery Cherry, Mango Mania, and Blueberry Blast -- all of which taste great!
CLIF Kid ZFruit organic snacks

Like all CLIF Kid snacks, these do not contain any artificial flavors or high fructose corn syrup, and each bar or rope is made with organic ingredients.  You can definitely feel good about serving CLIF Kid snacks at birthday parties, on playdates, in school lunchboxes, in Valentine's Day parties, or any day of the year.

Our party was a huge success, and a big part of the credit goes to the CLIF Kid snacks I served!  The party was held at a local paintball field. I placed a CLIF Kid ZBar Protein bar on each guest's plate so they would have something healthy to munch on besides cupcakes and rice krispy treats.

3Po and his guests spent over an hour running, dodging, darting, shooting, playing, and being extremely active.  After their paintball session was over, they were sweaty and tired and very, very hungry.  Needless to say, the kids devoured the CLIF Kid snacks in no time.
birthday party

Each guest received a CLIF Kid ZBar Protein bar and a CLIF Kid ZFruit & Veggie rope in their goody bag, so they got to take some of that goodness home with them.  Thank you, CLIF Kid, for helping to keep my kids and their guests healthy and happy!

Leapfrog introduces the Leap TV system

Just like they do every year, Leapfrog is all set to conquer the holiday season!  Their latest product, the LeapTV gaming system, has already been recognized as one of the hottest holiday items for children by top retailers including Toys”R”Us, Walmart and Target on their Top Holiday Toy Lists. What's more, LeapTV has already won awards from known and trusted organizations such as Dr. Toy, The Toy Insider and the National Parenting Publications Awards program.

We recently reviewed LeapTV, and we can see why LeapTV is sure to be on every child's wish list -- it's educational, it's fun, it gets kids off the couch as they play... and it's available at your local retailers for $149.99.  Check it out!

So what is LeapTV?  LeapTV is an active, educational video gaming system specially designed for kids ages 3-8.  Kids can play a variety of fun, educational games that grow their minds and their bodies.  Families with older children playing on Wii U, Playstation or XBox will recognize the LeapTV's components easily:  a game console, a game controller, a camera, and game cartridges kids and insert into the console, or download via the internet. At this point in time, there are 9 LeapTV games, created by educators and tested by parents and kids; by the end of the year, there will be over 100 games available for the LeapTV!

Kids can play on the LeapTV gaming system in 3 ways:

Body Motion: Kids control on-screen action via physical movements.  The LeapTV camera captures kids' motion as they dance, jump, twirl, and hop.  These video games definitely don't turn kids into couch potatoes!

Leapfrog LeapTV

Classic Control: Kids use the LeapTV controller in its classic position -- with handlebars pointing down -- to control on-screen action.  The buttons on the controller allow them to toggle between selections on a menu and select items.  They can also shake and tilt the controller for games like Kart Racing or the Disney Pixar Pals learning game.
Leapfrog LeapTVPointer Play:  The LeapTV controller's handlebars swivel out to 180 degrees for even more motion-controlled fun! Kids hold the controller in pointer position like they would hold a tennis racket or play sword (great for games like Jake and the Neverland Pirates!).

Here's what I love best about LeapTV:

It's easy for little kids to play
Kid love to be independent, and LeapTV helps them do things on their own. The controller is sized and shaped so that little hands can hold it easily.  Simple visual interface and audio instructions makes it easy for pre-readers to follow along. And kids who own other Leapfrog products will welcome familiar characters like Leap and Tad, the pet characters on the Leapband, and more.

It's educational
My favorite feature in all Leapfrog products is the educational components. All Leapfrog games help kids develop important skills in reading, math, science, and problem solving, not to mention fine and gross motor skills.  Leapfrog works the educational component in so subtly and skillfully that kids barely realize they're learning.  For example, in the Kart Racing game, players have to solve math facts in order to build their race cars, then on the race track they have to figure out simple patterns in order to steer their race cars through the correct gate.
Leapfrog LeapTV

It's a system that grows with the child
Each child in your family can create an account to play with on LeapTV, so parents can keep track of what their kids are playing and what skills they are learning.  The games adapt to your child: they level up or down to keeps learning at levels that challenge them.  Two children (siblings! friends!) can even play the same game and are given challenges for their developmental level -- so for example, player 1 might be given addition problems while player 2 might be given simple number recognition problems.  Your child won't be outgrowing LeapTV for a long, long time!

Leapfrog LeapTV

I do have a few issues with LeapTV. First, game loading can be slow.  Second, my sons found the game consoles difficult to get working properly. The toggle switch requires a very light hand, otherwise you'll end up selecting something that you didn't want.  Other than that, I think it's a great system, and the sooner you buy it for your child, the better!

Fitness made fun with Leapfrog's new LeapBand

Leapfrog Leapband fitness activity tracker for kids
A couple of weeks ago I was fortunate to have the opportunity to interview soccer star Mia Hamm. We talked about her involvement with Fit Made Fun Day and her tips to get kids more active (soooo important at a time when a third of kids or teens in the US is overweight or obese!).  We spoke about LeapFrog's new activity tracker, the LeapBand, and how it is motivating kids to get up and about.  I had the chance to test out the LeapBand, and boy is this gadget such an exciting development!  If you have a Fitbit or a Jawbone or a Fuelband and your kid loves to play with it, you can now get him or her a LeapBand to track activity in a much more fun way!

The Basics

Leapfrog Leapband fitness activity tracker for kids

What Leapfrog did for kids' education, they are now doing for kids' fitness -- they are using video gameplay to motivate kids and make it fun! The new LeapBand is a kiddie activity tracker that is worn on a child's wrist and registers motion. It has fun activity challenges like "wiggle like a worm" or "dance like a chicken" or "clap your hands" that kids don't really think of as exercise, just fun and games. Below are some of its best features:

Activity Tracker
The LeapBand tracks your child's motion -- walking, running, skipping, dancing, any movement.  The main screen has an activity meter (visual, not numerical) to give kids an idea of how active they've been.  The LeapBand also lets kids complete fun activity challenges ("Jump like a tiger and roar!", "Hop like popping popcorn!",  "Wriggle your fingers and toes!") for the chance to earn jewels (a pun on "joules"!).
Leapfrog Leapband fitness activity tracker for kids

Virtual Pet
To motivate kids, the LeapBand has a virtual pet that kids can feed and bathe and take care of (remember the Tamagotchi craze?). When your child moves around and completes activity challenges, they earn treats for their virtual pet and unlock new games and new pets to play with.

Games
Kids can interact with their pets in 3 mini games (Pet Parlor, Pet Boogie, Pet Chef), where they learn the importance of good grooming, good nutrition, and healthy habits.  There's also a separate app, Leapfrog's Petathlon Games (available on the LeapPad Ultra or an iOS or Android device), that lets kids' virtual pets compete in the Petathlon Games and play more mini games.
Leapfrog Leapband fitness activity tracker for kids

Parental Controls
Parents can download the LeapConnect app for the LeapBand onto their computers and connect the LeapBand to the computer via USB cable.  They'll be able to view their child's activity, see the jewels they've earned, and download additional activity challenges (up to 50!) onto the LeapBand.  They can even set "quiet" times when kids cannot play with their virtual pet (i.e. school time or nap time).

Leapfrog Leapband fitness activity tracker for kids

The Bongga

* The LeapBand is simple and easy to use, with just 4 buttons and audio instructions so even kids who don't yet know how to read will know what to do.
* The LeapBand also has a watch (so kids can tell time) and a stopwatch (so they can time themselves running or doing anything)
* Parents can set quiet times for the LeapBand (via the Leapfrog Connect app), so even though it is still tracking motion, kids can't use it to play with their pet (they can only use it as a watch). So they can wear it to school or during naptime and not be tempted to play with it.
* The LeapBand is rechargeable (via a USB cable); no more batteries to run out!

Leapfrog Leapband fitness activity tracker for kids

The Blah

* There is no volume control.
* The plastic wristband is not very flexible; some kids might find it uncomfortable wearing for extended periods of time.
* Unlocking pets can be frustrating. Kids have no idea how much longer they have to wait in order to unlock their next pet.

The Bottom Line

All in all, the LeapBand is another great product that masquerades as a video game, but in reality is developing all kinds of skills and healthy habits!

We're going to Camp EdTech!

I can't believe it has been two weeks since The Pea and I got back from our Expanding Your Horizons conference!  My mind is still swimming with ways to nurture my kids' interest in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM).  I came back from that conference full of great information, tips, and resources.

One of the most useful things I brought back home was a list of STEM opportunities around the Bay Area for the summer.  There are so many summer camp providers in the area, it was great to have a list of camps specifically geared towards STEM!  Since the conference was held at UC Berkeley, many of the most interesting camps were located around Berkeley and Oakland, which was kind of a bummer, because that's an hour drive for us.  Fortunately, several on the list had campuses conveniently located all over the Bay Area -- including a gem right in our own back yard, Camp EdTech!  I thought I knew all of the summer camps in our part of town, so I was delighted to discover Camp EdTech.  Even more exciting, Camp EdTech is inviting one of my kids to experience a week at camp!

As the name implies, Camp EdTech has a clear focus on hi tech:  campers get down and dirty with real-life, hands-on engineering projects like creating Android-compatible apps, developing video games, creating animated films, soldering circuits and simple machines, and honing their digital photography skills.  Here's their session list:

2-D Video Gaming
3-D Video Gaming
Digital Photography
Film Making
Animation
App Creation
Maker Studio

Isn't it amazing that kids so young get to do these kinds of activities! It's so great that Camp EdTech introduces kids to these kinds of skills and gets them thinking about the kinds of STEM careers they can pursue!

What really excites me about Camp EdTech is that the curriculum was developed with the help of the Children's Creativity Museum and the California Academy of Sciences, two of the coolest museums in the Bay Area!  My kids love, love, love, going to those museums because they have so many amazing exhibits and hands-on activities. Any camp activity designed with their help is sure to be a great experience!

If your child is younger than the 5th-8th grade range for Camp EdTech, don't despair.  The same group that runs Camp EdTech (Edventure More) also has a camp for Pre-K through entering 4th grade!  Camp Edmo offers week-long summer camps for kids who love to learn and explore.  Like Camp EdTech, the curriculum at Camp Edmo is designed in partnership with the California Academy of Sciences and the Children's Creativity Museum -- so you just know your child is going to have tons of fun!

Camp Edmo has camps for all kinds of interests and all kinds of kids:

Art and Science camps
This year's themes for Art and Science include Incredible Edibles (exploring the physical sciences), Magic & Medieval Times (exploring the physical sciences), Critterville (exploring the natural sciences), and Planet Power (exploring the natural sciences).  All themes include art and outdoor recreation activities.

Animation camps
You're never too young to learn about technology!  Campers will create an animated short film from start to finish.  Each week has a different animation theme and covers different stop-motion animation techniques.

Park program
Camps are held in local and regional parks, and campers spend lots of time outdoors, going on hikes, enjoying nature activities, playing games, and completing art and science projects.  This year's themes are Bay Camps, Sprout About, Sea Creatures, and Smart Art.  What a great way to get your child closer to nature!

Check out the Camp EdTech and Camp Edmo websites for more details including locations, times, dates, and prices.  Discounts are available for multiple weeks, multiple siblings, referrals, and financial aid is available.

Disclosure: I am receiving a free week of camp for one of my children and a discount for additional weeks and/or additional children. The views and opinions expressed here are my own.

Reasons why a Ride the Ducks San Francisco Tour is Like No Other

There is no shortage of strange sights around San Francisco, but this has got to be one of the strangest yet....

Yup, it's a car that looks like a boat!  Or is it a boat that looks like a car?  Take part in a Ride the Ducks tour of San Francisco and decide for yourself!  Ride the Ducks graciously offered me some tour tickets, so I seized the opportunity to give my kids a crash course in San Francisco history and culture.  I mean, they've lived all their life in the Bay Area so they ought to learn something about it, right?!  Besides, I figured that even if the tour guide bored them to tears, the novelty of riding on a tour vehicle that went on land and water would be entertaining enough.

Ha!  My kids enjoyed every second of that tour!  I've never seen smiles so huge, and it wasn't just because we were on a floating car/rolling boat.  The tour took us all over the city, through major San Francisco landmarks, with our guide offering fun and interesting facts along the way.  We drove past North Beach, Chinatown, Union Square, the Transamerica Building, Coit Tower, the Embarcadero, AT&T Park, the America's Cup Park and more.  Yes, you could hop on a tour bus to see the same sights.  But here are a few things that you won't get from any other San Francisco tour except Ride the Ducks:

No other tour draws as much attention from passers-by.  We certainly felt like celebrities during our tour!  All Ride the Ducks tours take place in an amphibious vehicle known as a DUKW.  DUKWs were originally designed during World War II,  for transporting goods and troops over land and water and for use approaching and crossing beaches in amphibious attacks. The name stands for "Designed in 1942 for Utility/amphibious purposes, with front wheel drive (K), and two rear driving axles (W)". Is it any wonder people call them Ducks?  The Ducks used in the tour aren't old relics, they're custom manufactured to be safe and comfortable.  The fact that they look cool and they make heads turn wherever they go is just a bonus.

No other tour comes with noisemakers.  Everyone who goes on the tour gets a fun quacker as a souvenir. Of course all the kids on the tour, mine included, couldn't help quacking away as soon as they got on board.  But even the grownups got into the spirit when the tour started. Our tour guide turned something that could have gotten really irritating (QUACKQUACKQUACKQUACK!!) into a fun game, encouraging everyone to QUACK whenever we passed a Walgreen's store.  Searching for Walgreens and quacking when they saw one really kept the kids amused, even when we were stuck in traffic.  Everyone also had fun quacking to the beat of the Blue Danube and other tunes that were playing throughout the tour.  Blue Danube?  Other tunes?  Yes indeed, that's another feature of Ride the Ducks......

No other tour has a playlist.  Music was piped through speakers throughout the tour, and our tour guide had the perfect song for every place we drove past -- That's Amore as we drove through North Beach, Take Me Out to the Ballgame near AT&T Park, Little China Girl in Chinatown, and so on.  Of course, the cruise portion of the tour featured songs like Rubber Ducky, the Blue Danube and In the Navy :)  The music gave the whole tour an upbeat spirit, and everyone had so much fun quacking to the beat!

No other tour has a guide quite like Captain Dan.  He not only fed us with interesting facts and trivia about San Francisco's major landmarks and districts, he also quacked everyone up with all his jokes.  The kids even loved his corny jokes because they could blow into their quackers whenever he delivered a lame punchline.

No other tour involves the tour guide driving the tour vehicle off a dock. What other city tour conducts a portion of the tour on water? About halfway through the tour we went to the San Francisco docks and just drove into the water -- it was crazy!  The sensation of shifting from car to boat, from the vibration on the ground to the swell of the waves, is quite novel.

No other tour gives you this view of the San Francisco Bay Bridge.  We spent about 20 minutes cruising the San Francisco Bay.  The water was quite calm, not too many waves, so we didn't really have to worry about sea sickness (although by the end of the cruise portion, The Pea and I were feeling a bit nauseous, so in retrospect I would have brought our Sea Bands in my purse).  Where the tour goes on the Bay depends on the current, wind and waves.  For the most part, we stuck to the harbor area between AT&T baseball park and the Bay Bridge, which isn't the most picturesque part of the Bay, but hey, safety first right?  And we were treated to some great views of the Bay Bridge, Treasure Island and the San Francisco skyline.

No other tour lets guests drive the tour bus!  The tour guide (I suppose I ought to call him the captain, at least for this leg of the tour!) will let anyone come up to steer on the way back to the docks (the length of time depends on how many people want to do it).  Jammy & 3Po couldn't believe that they were actually allowed to sit in the captain's chair and steer the boat.  It was such a novel experience and I'm thrilled that Ride the Ducks could provide it for them.

One final note: the tour is supposed to last 90 minutes but ended up being closer to 2 hours due to traffic.  If you book a tour, I strongly suggest booking a morning tour to avoid traffic since the streets of San Francisco can get clogged up during rush hour!  Don't forget that other special events like Market Day at the Ferry Building (Tuesdays) and any San Francisco Giants baseball game (which are on the tour's path) can drastically affect traffic.

If you're planning to tour San Francisco -- or if you're a Bay Area native (like we are!) and want to rediscover your local habitat -- I highly recommend a Ride the Ducks tour.  There's no other San Francisco tour out there that literally takes you on a tour of the City By The Bay, both through the City and on the Bay?!

Okay, enough with the review and on to the deals!   If you're in San Francisco and see Splash the Duck around town, make sure you get your photo taken with him, because you can get 1 free tour ticket when you buy 2:

In addition, if you happen to see the DUKW amphibious vehicle on the streets of San Francisco, snap another photo -- you could win Ride the Ducks our tickets for you and a friend:
