American Girl Holiday Accessories for Dolls

Holiday Accessories for Dolls (shrug)

Yesterday I reviewed one of the American Girl 2015 holiday items: the Joyful Jewels dress. But what is a holiday outfit without accessories? The American Girl Holiday Accessories for Dolls set has everything a doll wants to complete her holiday celebrations. I received a sample of the accessories set to review, and I agree, it's the perfect complement to the Joyful Jewels dress. If you're getting your daughter/niece/goddaughter/granddaughter the Joyful Jewels dress, make sure you get this accessory set to go along with it!

Holiday Accessories for Dolls (complete set)
The full set includes:

  • A velveteen shrug to add a bit of warmth to any fancy dress
  • A ring to add a glimmer to the festivities
  • A glitter globe that makes a great gift for a special friend; it has loose glitter and a little tree inside (no liquid)
  • Pretend striped glossy ribbon candy
  • A candy box
  • A pink gift bag covered in foil snowflakes
  • A sheet of red tissue paper

Here's a close up of the gift items. The ribbon candy is so pretty, and so is the snow globe. Proportion-wise, I'm not sure the two items work well together (compare the size of the globe next to the size of the ribbon candy; if that globe were the size of a child's palm, that candy would be huge!!), but I love the level of detail in both of them.

Here's a close up of the ring. It fits on American Girl dolls' pinkie fingers or index fingers. The ring's size is adjustable, but take care because it can easily fall off a doll's finger.

How I wish this were available in real-person size! Who wouldn't want to see this under their Christmas tree with their name on it?! Right now, the Holiday Accessories for Dolls set is on sale for $22 (originally $32) so it's a great deal.

American Girl Joyful Jewels Dress for Dolls

American Girl holidays 2015

When I first saw American Girl's 2015 holiday doll outfit collection, I was immediately drawn to the Joyful Jewels outfit. There is just something so fun and festive about a red party dress; whenever I see it, it puts me into a holiday mood!

Joyful Jewels Outfit

When I received a sample of the Joyful Jewels Outfit to review, I got to see the beautiful detail and fell in love with it even more. The dress has a red velvet bodice with a neckline adorned with gems, sequins, and a taffeta overlay. The skirt is red tafetta and tulle, with a taffeta bow. This dress is sugar and spice and everything nice, but it's also fire and sass and a whole lot of class.
Joyful Jewels Outfit dress detail

Note that the black shrug is not included in the outfit; it is included in the Holiday Accessories set (review coming soon!).

The outfit also comes with shiny black t-strap shoes and a red headband. Just look at the detail on the jeweled headband!

You can also get the matching girls' dress so your American Girl and her doll can match! It's really the perfect outfit for a holiday tea, holiday party, Nutcracker performance, music recital, or family holiday gathering at Hanukkah or Christmas. The girls' dress is on sale right now for $47 (down from $68) which is a really great deal.

Budsies: Turn Kids Drawings into Adorable Stuffed Friends

3Po and Jammy love to draw.  Some kids act out scenes in their imagination through LEGOs.  Others use Playmobil.  Other use action figures, stuffed toys, dolls.  3Po and Jammy do all of those, but the way they love best is to draw.  They literally spend hours drawing, and talking to each other as they draw, explaining the characters and the worlds and the action and the stories that unfold as they put pen to paper.

They use up dozens of sheets of paper per day.  I'd need an entire room to store all the drawings they have made over the years.  I let them keep their favorite ones, and I take photos of many of them, but I'm sure many of their characters and scenes have found their way to the recycle bin (I'm sure I'll regret that once they become famous artists).

These days, there are many ways to preserve your child's artwork, beyond the classic frame.  There are companies that turn kids' artwork into greeting cards, postcards, stickers, tshirts, bookmarks, mugs, and so on.  Recently I discovered the most original way to preserve artwork -- turn it into a stuffed toy!  Budsies brings kids' artwork to life by transforming it into adorable custom hand-sewn stuffed animals.  Just upload a drawing to Budsies' online order form, and their artists and craftsmen do the rest.

When 3Po and Jammy learned that Budsies had offered to turn one of their drawings into a stuffed toy, they couldn't believe it: the creatures of their imagination, made real!  They spent a lot of time and effort into designing and planning their Budsie (and loved every minute of it).

3Po loves cows. He owns about 10 stuffed cows, so he wanted to add a very special cow to his collection: a "cowterpillar", a cow with 8 legs.

Jammy reached into the depths of his imagination and drew a man-shark with wings.  A very muscular, buff man-shark with wings.  Don't ask me how or why he came up with it..  Jammy was extremely particular about how his man-shark should look, so he drew a front, side, and back view, with extensive notes for each view.  I tried to manage his expectations by saying that I wasn't sure whether Budsies could make his man-shark look exactly like the drawing, and that it might be difficult to get all the detail that he put it.

The boys bugged me almost every day from the time we ordered the Budsies till the time they arrived. They were so excited to see their new friends! I don't think I've ever seen them so excited about a stuffed animal.

When the Budsies arrived in the mail, we opened the box, and the very first thing I saw was a note from Budsies. The note said it might be a good idea to get the camera out so we could capture the expression on our kids' faces as they opened their packages and saw their Budsies for the very first time.  Boy was that a brilliant piece of advice!!  The surprise and delight on their faces was such a joy to behold!

As soon as 3Po saw his cowterpillar's head, he breathed, "Wow, it looks EXACTLY like my drawing.... it's PERFECT!"

Jammy could not stop giggling and laughing.  He was so delighted with his man-shark!  He just couldn't believe that Budsies was able to bring it to life.  Of all our kids, Jammy is the one who has absolutely no idea how to smile on demand.  All his smiles for the camera look forced and fake.  Not these.  I had the pleasure of capturing

Those smiles on our kids' faces are what we parents live for. Those are the smiles we would go to the ends of the earth to get.

Check out 3Po's cowterpillar.  It is amazing.  From the big, round nose to each fat little leg (all 8 of them), the cowterpillar is a 3D replica of 3Po's drawing.  As Alfie put it, it looks as though the Budsie came first, and 3Po drew it on paper by copying the Budsie!

I can't even begin to express how impressed I am with Jammy's shark man.  They managed to replicate his bulging arms and legs, his 6-pack, his grown.  They even got the chest muscles to protrude!  (the chest muscles look a bit like a butt stuck to his front, but shh, don't tell James, because he's fiercely in love with his shark-man!)

They even got the black birthmark on his lower back!

The boys love their new Budsies.  Cowterpillar and shark-man (Jammy has named him Nick Abbsworthy, the Sharchangel) have joined their stuffed animal legion, and they have been playing together every day.

Each Budsie is about 16" in height or length, and takes about 5 weeks to create.  They cost $99 regularly, but right now they are on sale for $69.  I know that sounds like a lot for a stuffie, but it's a CUSTOM stuffie and the most unique, personalized present for a child you can think of.  I can't tell you how delighted my kids were to have the characters of their imagination come to life!  There's just no better way to preserve the artwork of their childhood, and I would recommend Budsies to anyone.

Tips for creating the perfect Budsie:

Before you begin the process of choosing your child's drawing (or before your child begins to draw), check out the character gallery on Budsie's Facebook Page!  You'll get a great idea of how faithfully Budsies recreate the original drawings, how they translate your child's random lines into hair, etc...

If your child is experiencing artists' block or can't figure out what to draw, head to Budsie's Templates page for inspiration.  The character gallery is also a great place for inspiration.

You can encourage older kids to draw the side view and/or back view of their creature. The online order system only accepts 1 photo, but you can include front/side/back views in a single photo, or send additional photos to customer service.

The online order form has space for you to leave comments and descriptions of your child's creature.  Be as descriptive as you can!

Holiday Gift Guide 2012: Babies and Toddlers

It has been a while since we've had a baby or toddler in the house, so I don't review too many items for that age group any more.  Once in a while, though, I get an invitation to take a look at a product that just bowls me over with cuteness, and I just have to share it. Here are five of the best for the holidays:

Thousands of parents look to Cool Mom Picks for, well, cool picks (disclosure: I also work for them), so if Liz and her team of editors say they are in love with Psychobaby, they are definitely worth checking out -- but you only have to browse for a minute to fall in love with their hip, edgy baby & kids clothing.   Their burger tees and bibs are so adorable, but if you simply must have cutesy blue or pink, check out their monster tees in my latest review!

** Update: Giveaway has been extended to December 10!
** Giveaway Alert:  Enter to win a PsychoBaby tee below!

We had a ton of brightly colored plastic balls when the boys were babies, because they just could not get enough.  We especially loved toys that sent these balls rolling around for the kids to find them.  They would have loved the Leapfrog Peek-a-Shoe Octopus ($29.99) -- toddlers can drop balls into the octopus' top arms and guess which shoe the ball has landed under. As they lift each colored and numbered shoe, the octopus actually tells them which color or number shoe they are lifting!

When they were toddlers, my kids absolutely loved their electronic Elmo cellphone. But I doubt if any baby would recognize that clamshell phone design today -- so until toy makers can come up with a play touchscreen phone for babies, parents will have to let their 1-year-olds play on their iPods or MP3 players-- or give them Cookie Monster's MP3 Player ($9.99). So cute!

The Halo Sleep Sack ($39) was one of the best baby-era purchases we ever made.  Zipping our twins up into the Sleep Sack prevented them from ever kicking off their blankets while they slept, and forever eliminated cold feet (which meant more peaceful nights for them, and for me). Back then, Sleep Sacks only came in pink, yellow and blue, so it's nice to see they now come in adorable designs and patterns at Pottery Barn Kids.

A couple of weeks ago I was browsing through the One Step Ahead Holiday Toy Shop, searching for something to give away for the holidays, when I found and fell in love with this adorable Soft Owl Toy ($17.95). It's a great developmental toy for babies:  both owl feet are teethers, one wing has a mirror, and there are a variety of textures for baby to enjoy.  But it's the design that really gets me.  Maybe I'm being sentimental, but the sight of the mama owl with her wings wrapped protectively around her baby, all warm and cozily snuggled across her chest,  made my insides turn to mush.

Holiday Gift Guide 2012: Middle Schoolers

Now the The Pea has entered middle school, I've entered a whole new world as well.  Today's tweens and pre-teens are independent, bright, confident and tech savvy.  They're old enough to know exactly what they want, but young enough to jump for joy when they realize your present is exactly what they want.    Here are some suggestions for the perfect present to remind them that mom and dad are cooler than they look:

GIFTS FOR GIRLS

The Pea and her friends are really, really into nail art.  She has amassed quite a collection of polish and nail art accessories, and she plans to drop nail-related hints to her grandparents for gift ideas.  But girls still somewhere to put all that stuff, so take a cue from your own girlhood and get her a Caboodles organizer.  Yes, Caboodles!  They're still around, and better than ever!

*** Giveaway Alert:  Enter to win a Caboodles My First Love organizer below!

Duct tape crafts are really popular right now. The web is full of great tutorials, and Pea and her friends love creating purses, wallets, gift bags, folders and other knick-knacks.  That's why Scotch Colors & Patterns Duct Tape makes the perfect stocking stuffer: they're small, inexpensive and guaranteed to give their duct tape crafts and explosion of color and visual appeal.

As they grow older, girls get better and better at baking, so they no longer need an Easy Bake Oven to whip up tasty treats -- but they still might need a bit of help to create something that tastes as good as it looks.  Enter the Ultimate Cake Pops Set by Bakerella, a baking set with all the tools girls need to make cake pops that look (almost) as good as the exquisite creations of Bakerella, the creator of the cake pop. It has molds and stands and graters to make it easy as pie (or should I say cake?)

We've just received Just Dance 4 for Nintendo Wii to review, and already The Pea wants to invite her friends over!  It has all the songs that she and her BFFs love to sing and dance to -- plus they get the added fun of a little friendly competition.

GIFTS FOR BOYS

Physical and virtual play combine in one cool game with Nukotoys' Monsterologys.  Kids can collect physical cards ($1.99 for a 3-pack, $3.99 for a 7-pack, $19.99 for four 7-packs) featuring various mythical monsters based on the popular Monsterology books.  They get to trade cards with friends and hunt  for those prized "rare" cards.  In addition, they can download the free Monsterology game for the iPad which features a virtual role-playing world.  The best part:  kids can  "insert" their monster cards into the game by "scanning" or "tapping" the physical card on the iPad surface!  Amazing does not even begin to describe it, you'll just have to see for yourself.

My soccer fans love FIFA Soccer, and the 2012 for the PS Vita gives them the best on-the-go experience yet.  The graphics are superb, giving them amazing detail that matches the one on the PS3, and the PS Vit'as rear touchpad gives them added ball control.  They can easily form teams from years past, not just from the current 2011-2012 team lineups.

Oh what the heck, it's the holidays -- so why not go the whole hog and get him a PS Vita? With rich graphics, front and rear touchpads, social-enabled play, hundreds of games, the possibilities for play are mind boggling.  They may be middle schoolers, but they're not too old for their eyes to shine like stars when you get them this one perfect present!

Those buckets and buckets of LEGO bricks don't get relegated to the attic just because they're in middle school; the bricks and models just become more intricate and complex.  Once your son gets into the LEGO Technic series, it's time to get him the Unofficial LEGO Technic Builder's Guide.  It's full of instructions and inspiration for intricate, realistic, to-scale models of machines like bulldozers, supercards, tanks with suspended treads and more.

The Complete Idiot's Guide to Picture Puzzles  is the perfect stocking stuffer, travel companion and videogame downtime activity.  The "spot-the-difference"-type picture puzzless are super complicated, and each one specifies a time limit so everyone is challenged.  It's challenging without being geeky so it's perfect to look at with a friend during a playdate (oops, I'm not supposed to say "playdate" anymore -- in middle school it's called "hanging out").

GIFTS FOR BOYS AND GIRLS

Now that The Pea goes to and from school by herself, a cellphone to stay in touch with me is a must -- but I think she's too young to be texting her friends and immersing herself in social media via smart phone.  That's why I love her Kajeet Cellphone plan -- the parental controls are awesome, I was able to set her up with the most basic of plans, and she can gets a cool (not dorky) smartphone to surf the web -- at home, that is!

Have you tried lifting a middle schooler's backpack?  Even without school books, The Pea has a massive binder, school supplies, water bottle, lunch and assorted books she borrowed from the school library.  You can help lighten at least some of that load by gifting your middle schooler an e-reader like the Kindle or Nook, so she can fit all the 10,000 books she wants to read in a single, lightweight tablet.
Q2 Wifi Internet Radio It's a little four-inch cube that connects to your wireless network and lets you listen to any internet-based radio station in the world! That's right, you can listen to your favorite local, national or international radio stations or podcasts.  It comes in cute girly colors and cool boy colors.

Kids this age are really beginning to prize their independence, so giving them a gift card  (I love the American Express gift cards that donate the purchase fees to charity!) not only gives them the present they want, it also gives them CONTROL -- which makes the present all the more precious.

Bonggamom Finds Holiday Gift Guide 2012: School Aged Kids

When kids enter elementary school they begin to identify more strongly with their gender. Love it or hate it, it's highly likely that your school-aged child's wish list will include at least one toy that's designed to appeal specifically to their gender -- and that's why I've included gift suggestions for girls, for boys, and for girls AND boys.

GIFTS FOR BOYS

The Joker Fun House board game ($19.99) is anything but boring -- it combines the best parts of imaginative superhero play with a bit of friendly competition.  Not only do kids get the pleasure of trouncing their friends in a board game, they also get the pleasure of knocking down superheroes with a ball, or shooting down the Joker with a dart crossbow.  Every game is sure to be accompanied by boy-made rat-tat-tat machine gun noises, explosion sounds and faster-than-the-speed-of-sound whooshes.

** Giveaway Alert:  Enter to win a Joker Fun House board game below!

I can't let a holiday gift guide go by without putting in a good word for LEGO.  My boys have had LEGO on their holiday and birthday wish lists every year for the past several years, and I don't see that changing for many years to come.  This year they've got their eye of several new Ninjago sets ($6.99 and up) and the Star Wars Advent Calendar ($49.99). You just can't go wrong with it!
Ditto for K'NEX.  I love the fact that it challenges both sides of the brain (analytical, procedural and imaginative, creative), I love the fact that you can build upon your collection, and I love the complexity of the final models.  K'NEX celebrated their 20th Anniversary this year, so they must be doing something right!
Boys love trucks, and boys love dinos, and VTech Switch N Go Dinos ($15 and up) let them switch from one to the other.  The best thing about this toy is that there are no complicated instructions for transforming, and since you don't have to twist and turn the life out of them, they're far less likely to break.  Don't be fooled by their chunky appearance, even my third graders love them!
Batman is a perennial superhero favorite, and with this year's release of The Dark Knight Rises movie, Batman is fresh in everyone's minds, and stores are full of Batman action figures.  The latest line, Batman Power Attack ($9.99 and up), features a variety of Batman figures in different outfits, a Robin figure and some villains.  There's also a deluxe version with some motion features so kids can make Batman kick and punch.

GIFTS FOR GIRLS
Build a Bear's seasonal items are here, and they're all as sweet as they sound (Merry Mint Pup, Christmas Cookie Bear, Pink Flurry Teddy, etc.., $20 and up for seasonal items, $10 and up for regular bears).  What little girl wouldn't want a cuddly friend that she stuffed and dressed by herself?  If you're lucky enough to live near one of their new interactive stores, the experience is even more fun, with all-new sound stations and new scents and touchscreen bathtubs and other high-tech fun.

I'm such a big American Girl fan, and there are so many gift ideas from American Girl -- from dolls to doll clothes to girl clothes to books to activity kits to craft kits -- that I'm planning to devote a whole post to American Girl gift ideas!
Little girls want a dollhouse to go with their American Girl dolls, but these 18" dolls take up a lot of room, and their dollhouses even more so.   I love American Doll Room's solution -- a sturdy cardboard doll room ($189) that can be folded up and packed away for storage or travel.  It even reverses for twice the play options!
When I was a kid I used to love to draw and design my own dresses and outfits.  Later I loved to paint my own tshirts, but I never got closer to sewing my own clothes than one sad blouse-and-skirt combo.  Now every girl can create her own outfit with Fashion Playtes ($10 and up) --  just choose an item of clothing and customize with decals, appliques, ribbons, rhinestones, trim and bling.  Fashion Playtes makes your girl's creation come to life and mails it straight to her!  As The Pea will tell you, designing an outfit is so much fun, and actually wearing it is even better.

GIFTS FOR BOYS AND GIRLS
The LeapPad ($99.99) hasn't won multiple awards and made hot toy lists nationwide for nothing.  It's simply the best kids' electronic learning pad out there -- and a sure way to get your kids off your own tablet!  The new and improved LeapPad 2 has more memory and more apps than ever, which means more fun and learning for your kids.

If a LeapPad is out of your budget range, you can still give your kids all the fun and learning of Leapfrog with the Leapster GS ($69.99).  I like to think of it as an educational device disguised as a gaming console.  It has all the cool stuff:  motion-based play, a built-in camera, kid-friendly controls and a library of 300+ action-packed games, apps, music, videos -- as well as the educational stuff (i.e. the games and apps all have an educational component and help kids learn through play).
Physical and virtual play combine in one cool game with Nukotoys' Animal Planet Wildlands.  Kids can collect physical cards ($1.99 for a 3-pack, $3.99 for a 7-pack, $19.99 for four 7-packs) featuring various African wildlife -- so they can learn animal facts, trade cards with friends and hunt  for those prized "rare" cards.  In addition, they can download the free Animal Planet Wildlands game for the iPad which features a virtual world where animals run free.  The best part:  kids can  "insert" their animal cards into the app by "scanning" or "tapping" the physical card on the iPad surface!  Their animal then comes to life in the virtual world, and where they can run, race and hunt other animals.  Amazing does not begin to describe it.

My kids play with their Webkinz stuffed animals ($5.99 for Lil Kinz animals, $12.99 and up for Webkinz animals) every single day, so even though their collection is 30+ strong, I'm still probably going to get them a Webkinz again this year.   In previous years I had the excuse of needing to buy one to keep their online Webkinz World accounts active, but now you can access Webkinz World for free, I have to admit that I buy them because they're so darned cute and cuddly, and because they enhance my kids' imaginative play.
