Sang Hyun Lee Honored
On September 17, 2015, a portrait of Professor
Sang Hyun Lee was hung at Princeton Theological Seminary honoring his work
and service to the seminary, to promoting Asian-American Studies and
students in academia and the ministry, and to Edwards Studies as an
editor, scholar, and teacher. His contributions to the Yale series of Edwards's
Works included the editing of volume 21, on The Trinity, Grace and
Faith, which featured a masterful introduction.
He organized and hosted two
international conferences on Edwards, one in Philadelphia in 1996, and
another at PTS in 2002, both of which resulted in published proceedings,
entitled, respectively, Edwards In Our
Time and The Princeton Companion to
Jonathan
Edwards, both of which
introduced Edwards to new audiences. He was also
one
of the key speakers at the National Symposium on Edwards held in
Washington,
DC, on the tercentenary of Edwards birth in 2003. Most of
all,
Prof. Lee's master work, The
Philosophical Theology of Jonathan
Edwards,
published in 1988 and again in 2000, with its identification of
Edwards'
dispositional ontology, established a paradigm for
interpretation
that continues to set the parameters for Edwards
scholarship
to this day.
Most recently, he contributed to the forthcoming
Jonathan Edwards Encyclopedia.
Prof. Lee's legacy endures not only
through
his writings, but through the students he taught and the
dissertations
he directed, forming future generations of scholars,
ministers,
and educators.
Today, Edwards enjoys unprecedented interest on a
global scale, and Prof.
Lee, through his dynamic
portrayal and recommendation of Edwards
thought,
has played a vital role in cultivating and encouraging that
level
of readership and dialogue. We all owe him a great debt for the
time,
thought and effort he devoted to the study of Edwards, and we are
delighted
to express our heartfelt admiration for and appreciation to him
as
his portrait is hung to grace the hallowed halls of Princeton Theological
Seminary.
Warmest regards,
