From Vicksburg.

The Yankees have given up the effort to get in rear of Vicksburg by way of steels's Bayon, and have determined on carrying the city by assault. A letter from Vicksburg to the Mobile Register, dated the 10th says:

‘ We are now again on the track of more important events, and if the programme is followed out there will be stirring times about the Walnut Hills in less than a week. My suspicious heretofore hinted at, that the withdrawal of the troops from before our eyes was only intended for the purpose of bringing them against us at another point, have proved to be correct in this case; and report now has it, that the boats which were taken away from here are intended to be cotton clad, in order to enable them to approach our batteries and land the troops in front of town. That they were taken up the river for that purpose seems very probable, and when they come again they will present quite a different appearance.

It is furthermore stated by the Federal reports from Memphis the three hundred transports were being sent down from that point, and that they were to be barricaded with cotton bares for the purpose of landing troops and storming our works at Vicksburg. That this force is now coming against us there can be no doubt, and the fact that a part of the camp has been raised indicates that their movements are to be prosecuted with the greatest dispatch. This week is announced by them as the time when the attack is to be made, but it will probably require a few days more for them to complete all their arrangements.
