Mayor's Court, Tuesday, March 17.
--Jas. H. Gilman and Archer T. Walton were arraigned for stealing a $200 horse from Clement C. Tinsley.--Mr. Gilmer appeared for the prisoners, and alleged that the party from whom the prisoners had bought the horse was confined in Castle Thursday; and he expected to prove his client innocence by the testimony of the witness. The testimony for the Commonwealth being heard, a strong case was made out against the prisoners, who were committed to jail to be further examined before the Hustings Court on the second Monday in April next.Joseph Gaines, a free negro, was brought up for examination, on the charge of stealing a coat, worth $50, the property of John Mc enough--Owing to the absence of a material witness the case was continued until Thursday to which time Gaines was committed to jail.
Joseph Tougett, arrested for going about without a copy of his register, was discharged by the Mayor.
George Allen, a soldier, arrested as a deserter, was sent before the Provost Marshal.
Joseph, slave of Thos. H. Dunn, was ordered 25 lashes for having in his possession four sheets, three candles, and a lot of beef, supposed to have been stolen, as he could not account for how he obtained the articles.
