the rumored attack upon Norfolk — concert — Picket fired upon — Salt water Luxuries, &c.
The net proceeds of the concert given Monday night by the amateur minstrels of the 3d Regiment of Alabama Volunteers, amounts to about $513, which, with a donation of $20 from Hon. J. G. Shorter, Governor elect of Alabama, has been paid over to the treasurer of the "Ladies' Aid Society."
A soldier named Jordan Johnson was shot at by some unknown person on Monday night, while on guard at the Pig Point battery.--Johnson was not hurt.
The luscious bivalves--"King of Moluska" --with which our waters abound, are now sold without hindrance in our market, although they are bought and eaten here by many persons during the greater part of the summer. The price here now is 75 cts. per gallon. The quantity of oysters planted in the coves and rivers in this vicinity last winter was, I learn, much less than in former seasons. But there will be a plentiful supply for home consumption, and for other cities of the State.
The finest oysters in this section are found in Lynnhaven river. They are, as is quite well known, of very large size, firm, fat, and of delicious flavor. Lynnhaven river, which is, by the way, a wide and beautiful stream, reaching from Chesapeake Bay for some miles into Princess Anne county, has long been celebrated for the finest fish, especially the savory hog-fish, sheepshead, spot, trout, &c.
his is the best period of the fish season in this section. The different kinds peculiar to our waters are now brought to market in plentiful quantities and in fine order. Spots in bunches of 10 and 12 are sold at 10a12 cents. The large and superior fish, called the salmon trout, a general favorite here, are sold at 8a10 cents each. The length of the fish varies from 18 to 24 inches. I have known the grey trout to be so plentiful in our market that half a dozen of large size, varying from 12 to 18 inches in length, were sold at six cents, or one cent each. This species of the trout is best in the spring, while the salmon trout comes to perfection at the present season. The rock fish is caught in the waters near our city of great size and in vast numbers. I have known eight hundred taken at a haul, which were sold at wholesale at $1.50 each, and retailed at an average of $3 each.
Two of our public schools will open shortly. Two of the buildings are occupied by soldiers, which will prevent the opening of more than two for some time. About half a dozen good private schools will also be commenced in the city this month.
Norfolk is now remarkable for good order. No important arrests have been made for two weeks.
