The Governor of St. Croix and the Alabama.
An agent of the so-called “confederate States of America” at St. Croix purchased a large quantity of coal for the Alabama, whereupon the governor of the island informed him that it would not be permitted to be taken away by that vessel. The fire-eater's reply was that “Captain Semmes would come and take it.” His Excellency's answer was an imperative order to immnediately remove the coal three miles inland.
