--Sir — It has been a source of gratification to your numerous friends in the county of Henrico to hear your name generally spoken of as a candidate for our State Convention, to assemble in the city of Richmond on the 13th of February next.--We want men of talent, firmness, decision of character, and fidelity to the institutions of the South.
at this critical period of our history.
These, and every other qualification to constitute you an able and efficient representative, we believe you to possess in a very eminent degree.
The eyes of many, we have no doubt a majority, of the people, are directed towards you. We do not think our interests could be confided to safer or abler hands.
At such a juncture in our political affairs, we do not consider that any man is at liberty to with hold his services from those of his fellow-citizens who may desire them.
We therefore urge you to proclaim yourself a candidate at once to represent the county in the Convention

Felony cases.
--The following cases are to be tried before Judge Lyons, at the Grand Jury term, in February:
Joseph H. Crenshaw, for shooting Jno. Askew, with intent to kill, on the 11th of September last.
Mary Shay, for stealing $27 from Patrick Reynolds, on the 14th of November.
Matthew Egan, for stabbing James Farrer, with intent to kill, on the 24th of December.
William Martin, for breaking into the store of Porier, Harris & Horner, with intent to commit larceny, on the 26th of May.
Lorenzo W. Frazier, for breaking and entering the house of John N. Davis, and stealing clothing, &c., valued at $30.
Charles Reininger, for stealing $70 from Frederick Hausler and Max Stadelhofer, on the 5th of December.
John Lipscomb and Thomas Wilkerson, for breaking into the store of C. P. Word &Bro., with intent to commit larceny, on the 1st of May.
David Muldoon, for stabbing Davis Conover, with intent to kill, on the 21st of December.

The Henrico Homicide--preliminary examination of Joseph Bernard, for the murder of John O. Taylor.
--The preliminary examination of Joseph Bernard, charged with the murder of John O. Taylor, Esq., took place yesterday, before Justice Lee, at the County Court-House.
The prisoner, who is an old man, sat by his counsel, James Lyons and A. Judson Crane, Esqs., and listened attentively to the testimony, but his countenance betrayed no emotion.
It is stated that his health is considerably impaired.
John B. Young, Esq., was present, on behalf of the Commonwealth.
Two witnesses were examined.
who testified substantially as follows:
Wm. A. Barnett, sworn.--On the 11th day of the present month, (January,) I was at work for Mr. Taylor, on a new barn, at the farm which he purchased of Bernard.
Between 12 and 1 o' clock, Mr. Taylor came up, and was helping me. Later in the evening, Thornton Carter came there.
Between 4 and 5 o'clock Joseph Bernard came along, and turned his horse

Sent to the Penitentiary.
--In the case of John Mescoe, convicted before Judge Lyons and sentenced to the penitentiary for receiving stolen goods from a negro, an appeal was taken, and the execution of sentence suspended in consequence.
The Court of Appeals have refused to reverse judgment, and the prisoner was taken to the penitentiary on Wednesday, to remain two years.

Judge Lyons' Court.
--The regular quarterly term of this Court commenced, in the City Hall, at 11 o'clock yesterday. The Court House was crowded — over 200 of the sovereign people, summoned as jurors, appearing at the time.
The first criminal case called was that of Lorenzo W. Frazier, charged with burglariously entering the office of J. N. Davis & E. E. Orvis, on the 11th day of November last, and stealing sundry articles of wearing apparel.
A jury being selected, the trial proceeded till 3 o'clock, when a recess was taken till 4. Messrs. White, Bayly, and Lucas, appeared for the accused.
