College Diaries: How to survive recruitment, from a sorority alum

It's almost that time of year..... sorority recruitment. That means singing songs, wearing matching outfits, and talking about yourself are back in style. Well, only in college.

Sorority recruitment, rush, whatever you wish to call it is when women go through the recruitment process to join a sorority. At Iowa State recruitment in the fall is known as Primary Recruitment. But, every school calls it something different, and treats the process differently. As a sorority alum, I'm going to give you my tips and tricks on how to survive sorority recruitment.

*NOTE: EVERY school is different and treats the recruitment process different. These are my tips and tricks based on my experience alone. Everyone's experience is different and I believe there is a chapter out there for everyone! So, take this with a grain of salt and try and put it into persepctive for your specific school and Greek system.

TIPS:
  1. Be yourself | Don't be anyone BUT yourself! If you aren't yourself I guarantee you WILL end up in the wrong chapter. Acting like something your not just to get into the "cool" or "popular" house is a big no no. Number one, appearances can be deceiving. Just because it may seem like the cool sorority to be in, doesn't mean it's right for you. Number two, you want to end up in a chapter with girls like you! If you act like someone or something your not you will end up in a chapter like whoever you're acting like. So, do yourself a favor and just be yourself! The right chapter will accept you even if you are a major goofball (I am a major goofball and found a chapter that accepted me so no worries, goofballs unite).
  2. You don't have to agree with your friends | Luckily when I went through recruitment I only had two good friends who were going through the process as well. But, if your going to the same school with all of your BFFs and you listen to all of the chapters they like it can be overwhelming. My philosophy, that worked out well, was to keep my opinions to myself and to just go with my gut. If you start picking chapters your friends like, just because they like them, you may end up not finding the best chapter for you. Be selfish and think about yourself! Think about what chapters you liked during each round and make your selections based on your opinions, not on what your friends are picking. Trust me, even if you and your friends end up in different chapters you can all still be friends. It's actually really fun to have friends in different chapters! So don't sweat it if you don't 100% agree with your friends and like all the same chapters.
  3. Act natural | This goes along with being yourself, but act like you would act on any other day. Just because it is recruitment you shouldn't act or talk any differently!
  4. Don't be nervous! | This leads me to.... don't be nervous! Trust me the girls on the other side are just as nervous if not MORE nervous then you! They are worried about keeping the conversation going, asking good questions, and getting to know you. So, no worries, keep calm and carry on because recruitment should be fun on nerve racking.

WHAT TO WEAR: Every school has different outfit requirements for each day. But, my overarching advice is to wear what you normally wear. If you want to buy new outfits for recruitment, go for it! I certainly did (no shame). However, don't feel like you need to go buy all new preppy clothes or clothes you've seen girls from your high school wear to sorority parties just to join a sorority. Every girl in every sorority has their own personal style that is unique to them. I wear Lilly Pulitzer all the time, but not every girl in my house did. So, don't stress to much about your outfits! Wear what makes you comfortable! Because if you aren't comfortable in what your wearing, it's gonna be hard to focus on anything else. If you're looking for specific outfit ideas or you have questions please feel free to leave them in the comments below! I also have a post from bag in the day on what I wore to recruitment and my outfit ideas from back then!

Throughout my college years I've done a TON of sorority recruitment posts. Here are some throwbacks to old posts....

What are your tips and tricks for sorority recruitment? Leave them in the comments!

OOTD: Jadelynn Brooke on Vacation

*Way up I feel blessed*
Just kidding, but I do feel blessed that I have gotten to work with Jadelynn Brooke the past two years as a campus rep! Jadelynn Brooke, if you didn't already know, creates some of the CUTEST tees out there. Three sisters started the company and create preppy, southern, patriotic, and now even Disney themed tees! If you love color and fun you'll love these girls.

I love wearing their products to the pool, beach, or to class (when I was in class...). This vacay 2017 tank sadly didn't make it to me on time for my spring break, but I was so happy I got to sport it at the pool while I was on my vacation after graduation. Their tees are incredibly soft and have such amazing colors, like this neon orange!

Jadelynn Brooke also makes accessories! Personally, I use their re-usable tote bags for groceries or just carrying stuff around. They are super durable, fun, and fold up super easily. They also have hats, stickers (who doesn't love stickers!), and so much more. My blessed hat is also from Jadelynn Brooke! No to mention, they have ventured into super cute dresses, plain tees, and more for more everyday wear. But, I still love their t-shirts the best. I recently bought this Disney tee and it is so darn cute. They have a ton of new Disney tees right now and if you are a Disney fan like me you will die over these designs! From Dole Whips to castles they have it all.

OOTD: Cardinal & Gold

In honor of graduation, I wanted to post one last look feature my alma mater Iowa State University. This look is perfect for high school graduation pictures, featuring your new university or college, or for a basketball or sporting event at your school. It is a super simple look, but I love it.

So, this tee is so so cute. I picked it up at a store in Overland Park, Kansas at the Plaza. Charlie Hustle sells vintage inspired college and sports apparel and is such a cool store. In-store they even have some vintage tees and jerseys that are super cool. Side note: if you're ever in the Kansas City area the Plaza is the best place to shop!

The details in this tee are super cute. It's kind of like a short sleeve baseball tee. Not to mention the fabric is so so soft. Its the perfect comfy tee. I also adore the vintage Iowa State mascot. Nothing wrong with the new Cy, but this vintage little guy is too cute.

We need to talk about these adorable Lilly Bee University flats for a second. I have eyed these flats since I discovered the company, but never purchased them... until this year! Naturally I get cute Iowa State shoes as I am leaving Iowa State right... but I plan on wearing these on game days to support my team in a cute subtle way. They have a ton of different schools available in a few different styles. Iowa State is sometimes hard to come by for school apparel like this so I was super excited to get them! Also, their customer service is great. The size I ordered didn't fit and they let me exchange them and the new pair came super quickly.

Jeans and a college tee is the perfect go-to uniform to show school spirit. It's simple and comfortable. Some schools get super dressed up for tailgates and games, but at Iowa State, and most midwest schools, we keep things pretty casual. Which is great because you don't feel super pressured to find cute tailgating dresses and what not. Throw on a fun tee like this one and a pair of jeans or shorts and you're good to go.

It's been great wearing Cardinal and Gold the past four years. Moving from my high school colors that were blue and gold it was nice to have one common color in the mix. I will always cherish my memories at Iowa State at football games, basketball games, Greek Week, Homecoming, and more. It's been amazing to wear these great school colors with pride!

College Diaries: This is the end

This is the end....

4 years, 8 semesters, over 141 credits, two majors, Trend Editor in Chief, Fashion Show Director, BHG Meredith Apprentice, Pi Beta Phi sister, and much much more. Iowa State the past four years have been some I will never forget. From eating meal bundles in Maple with my freshman dorm friends, to hitting the bars with some of my sorority sisters, my big being the best big ever, studying abroad with some amazing people I will never forget, Mariah from Chambery and Champagne and I bonding over our love of fashion, and my best guy friend forcing me to have fun. I have had so many great memories at Iowa State.

Sometimes it is easy to focus on what went wrong, always being tired, taking to many credits and so on. My time in college wasn't easy. From friends not acting like real friends to girls just being mean I didn't breeze through college. People always said that college got better, but it felt like people became meaner as the years went by. Sometimes I got so caught up in what other people were doing and how they were treating me that it made be go crazy. Then by junior year I realized something... it doesn't matter what other people think, and real friends will stick by you no matter what. I realized it wasn't worth being upset over people and things that just didn't matter. From then on I was happier, had better friends, and was achieving more academic success then ever before. The minute I stopped worrying about other people I did better in school, felt better about myself, and achieved some of the goals I set for myself as a freshman in college. In the end, I became Trend Co-Editor in Chief, interned at Better Homes & Gardens, became a Director for The Fashion Show, and graduated cum lade with two majors. Almost everything I set out to do I accomplished in my four years.

It's crazy to think that it is all over. Truly it hasn't set in because I had finals up until the last minute of graduation. So, I haven't really sat down and realized that I'm officially done with college. Just when you think high school flew by, college goes by faster. The past four years have been some I will always remember. From Greek Week to Homecoming, to being published in Better Homes & Gardens, to being initiated into Pi Beta Phi there are so many amazing memories attached to Iowa State for me. Although it is sad to leave Iowa State, I am ready to take on my next adventure in Chicago. I'm not sure where my adventure will take me, but I am excited to see where it goes, and to get some much needed sleep, it's not goodbye Iowa State, it is see you later!

I'll be doing a few more "college" related posts with tips and tricks to surviving your four years this summer! Be on the lookout for those and much more from Sew Cute Style!

What I wore: To Graduation

Graduation has come and gone, but I wanted to share some details on what I wore for my big day. Finding a graduation dress was a struggle. Now and days I am super picky about what I wear, and I only really shop from J Crew and Lilly Pulitzer. Occasionally some other stores. I found a great Lilly dress (as seen in my graduation photos) for my College of Liberal Arts convocation ceremony on Friday. But, I was struggling to find a dress for my actual graduation ceremony. Then I found this great coral dress from Nanette Lepore from Rue La La. It was on super sale, I got about $300 off! Such a steal!

I'm usually a hard core print girl, but I wanted my dress to be simple (for me) and classic. I still wanted a colored dress so this cute coral Nanette Lepore dress worked out perfectly! It was a little long because #shortgirlproblems, so I got it hemmed at a local dry cleaner. Not sure why every dress was made for someone a size 0 but 5'9 but oh well, it worked out in the end!

The dress has super fun detailing, which is why I loved it. I'm obsessed with these little bell sleeves. It gave such a fun feminine detail. Also, can we talk about these fun flower embellishments? It gave the perfect spring summer vibe to the look. The flowers continued onto the back of the dress as well. In addition, there was a little strip of fabric that went across the top part of the back for an extra touch to the otherwise pretty open back.

For my "graduation" accessories I had a Pi Beta Phi stole which we bought as a chapter. It was nice to have something to wear for graduation from my sorority. Most chapters buy a stole or have cords that represent their sorority colors. I opted for the stole just so people would know what it was for. I find that people have so many cords it's hard to know what they represent. So, the stole makes it more obvious! In addition to my stole, I had my cum lade cords for my grades. With as involved I have been the past few years of college I was so excited to graduate with honors. Most semesters I had 18 or more credits on top of activities and a sorority so any honors was a great achievement for me!

Another fun accessory I had for my graduation look was this Alex and Ani bangle. My parents gifted this to me before my convocation ceremony so I could wear it all weekend. I love Alex and Ani, as you all know, so this bracelet is perfect! It even has a little tag that says 2017.

Couldn't help but snap a few Disney inspired pics! My brother and dad got this I'm Celebrating... Graduation button for me at the parks. Then I picked up this fun Mickey graduation hat as well. It's super cute and will act as a little momento as well.

Picking shoes for graduation can be a stressful thing. You have to keep in mind how much walking or standing you'll be doing, if your walking on grass, and so on. These Calvin Klein heels I picked up from Nordstrom Rack are seriously the best heels ever. They are so comfortable, the perfect "nude" shade for my skin tone (shout out to the other pale-ies out there), and are the perfect height. They aren't to high and have a thicker heel so walking in grass isn't an issue.

For my accessories I kept things simple, and classic. I didn't want to wear anything to trendy or flashy just to keep my pictures looking as timeless as possible. So, I opted for my lavaliere necklace, my Alex and Ani grad cap bangle, and my Pandora charm bracelet. To finish the look I wore my go-to pearl stud earrings. Again, super simple, but super classic.

DIY: Graduation Cap Decorating

I graduate this week!!! It's crazy how time has truly flown by me. It feels like yesterday that I was packing up my parents car and they dropped my off at my freshman year dorm at Iowa State. Now, it's time to join the real world and become a grown-up. But, first, I have one craft left of my college career. My graduation cap! I was super excited to decorate my cap because in high school we weren't allowed to add any embellishments (like nothing) to our caps. Naturally I had to go all out for my college graduation cap!

I first started by brainstorming some ideas for my design. Pinterest is an amazing resource to find graduation cap ideas. Check out my college Pinterest board for some super cute ideas! As for my cap I knew I wanted to incorporate a Disney quote and something about Iowa State at the same time. Iowa State's slogan is "Choose your adventure at Iowa State" and my favorite Disney movie is Beauty and the Beast. It worked out perfectly to select the quote "I want adventure in the great wide somewhere". It matched Iowa State with the adventure part and was from my favorite Disney film! Plus it's super inspirational and kind of cheesy, in a good way. Also, I had a subtle tribute to Iowa State with the red and gold colors I used. But I had to make it sparkly and more girly to spice it up!

Now, for the DIY.... here are the supplies I used to create this cap.....

Supplies:
hot glue gun | glitter cardstock | rose 3D stickers | Swarovski flat crystals | glitter letter stickers | glitter foam stickers | scissors
*All supplies were purchased at Hobby Lobby*

Step 1: I traced my cap onto the glitter cardstock to cut out the shape.
Step 2: This is the tricky part, you have to cut out a whole for your little button on your cap. Not going to lie I messed this up. But, since the glitter cardstock was pretty forgiving I simply cut a square out that had a hole for the button and placed it on top of the area I messed up. Don't stress about it being perfect.
Step 3: Next I simply set aside all of the letters and the rose stickers I needed for the design and practiced placing them how I wanted. Then I placed them onto the cap.
Step 4: For extra sparkle, and a nod to my dance competition days, I added some Swarovski crystals to embellish the cap.

Graduation caps don't have to be hard to make! If you use store bought stickers and paper like I did you can get your cap done in a flash. If you have more time and are more artistically inclined painting directly onto your cap is a great option. Do whatever you want to your cap and make it personal to your interests or major.

How are you decorating your cap for high school or college graduation? Let me know in the comments!

How to Prepare For Finals

Finals season is upon us.... which means it's time to get town to business and finish the semester strong! This year I lucked out and only have one test during finals week and one that is online that I can take over a week and a half period. Score! The rest of my "finals" are larger projects, which I prefer over tests any day.

As a senior in college I know a thing or two about taking and studying for finals. The key is to not wait for the last minute to study, as hard as it may be. So, here are my tips on how to start prepping for your finals ahead of time....

1 week before: Right now we are a little under one week away from finals week. This is the time to start gathering your materials, looking over old assignments, and start to begin to organize yourself. If you don't have all of your assignments in one folder or in one spot on your computer start organizing those papers and files! This way when you go to create a study guide everything will be easily found. For most of my tests, professors post study guides. Start working on the study guide as soon as your professor makes it available! This way when it comes time to study you don't spend days just making the study guide.

Finals week: Depending on your finals schedule some of your tests may be Monday and some may be later in the week. Prioritize what you need to study first based on when the test is. Unless you know one test will be very difficult try and study chronologically. This way you can focus on what is coming up next versus spending all of your energy on a test that's Friday when you have tests earlier in the week you need to study for as well.

Night before: The night before a test I always sit down and just read my study guide or notes. For me re-reading and going over everything really makes a difference! This way you can remember key words by recognition from reading them over and over again. Also, be sure to get a good night sleep! My philosophy is I'd rather go to bed and wake up early then not sleep at all. But, do what works for you. If you are an all nighter kind of person go for it! However, sleep is super important and no one likes to focus on a test when all they want to do is take a nap. Most importantly, remember to set multiple alarms so you make it to those morning exams.

Morning of: Don't stress to much the morning of. Go over your materials one last time and make sure to re-read things you are having trouble remembering right before the exam. If possible skip to that question so the material is fresh in your mind!

What are your tips for acing finals? Tell me in the comments!

Lawrence, KS Snapshots

The past two weekends I went to visit my boyfriend at the University of Kansas. I love visiting because Lawrence is an adorable town and has a lot of fun things to do. Although I love Ames, it's nice being in a larger city with more shopping, restaurants, and activities.

Lawrence is also home to Cane's which is the best chicken fast food place out there, at least I'm convinced. If you are near a Cane's it is a MUST! Everything is great and I can get behind a restaurant with basically only chicken strips and french fries on the menu.

As you may have see on Instagram or my last post we went to visit the nearby sunflower fields! It was so beautiful and it was crazy to see so many sunflowers all in one place.

What did you do this weekend? Let me know in the comments!

College Series: School Supplies I CAN'T Live Without!

School supplies and stationery are kind of my thing. So, back to school time means all new notebooks, pens (lots of pens), planners, and more! Here is my list of must have school supplies that I can't survive college without!

  1. Pens- I mean this is kind of obvious, but pens are my life line. When I'm taking notes in class I always use pens and colored pens. My personal pet peeve is when people use pencil to take notes, not sure why it just bothers me! Some of my favorite pens are the Ink Joy gel pen (I use the black ones), Le Pen felt tip style pens (they come in a ton of colors!), Sharpie pens, and Stadler felt tip pens. I'm a huge fan of felt tip pens because they write super smooth and they don't bleed to bad. Fair warning the Ink Joy pens do bleed, but they write very smooth!
  2. Notebooks- In class I always write my notes in a notebook. Freshman year I tried the whole typing on my laptop thing and I got way to distracted. In other words I would be browsing on Pinterest, shopping, working on my blog, etc. So, I converted to taking notes in a notebook. I get all of my notebooks at Staples. They look like the Five Star brand but they are staples generic version but I personally think they are better! I've never had one of these fall apart on me which is super important!
  3. Highlighters- I color code and add color to my notes on a daily basis. Highlighters combined with colored pens is a great way to stay organized and to make your notes look pretty!
  4. Planners- This isn't a new phenomenon that I'm obsessed with planners. But, my top favorites are The Simplified Planner, The Happy Planner, or my Band.o agenda. Be on the lookout for more planner posts soon!
  5. Notepads or paper pads- Making lists is a way of life in my book. I love having small little notebooks or paper pads to jot down quick reminders. If your on a budget the Target dollar spot has a ton of cute weekly notepads or normal sticky notes for just $1 or $3! If you want to splurge Rifle Paper Co. is the way to go!

College Series: College Apartment Living Room Tour

After being in my new apartment for about 3 weeks things are finally coming together! My living area is super small, so it's been the room that has come together the fastest. It's a pretty basic living room: coach, coffee table, TV, and a TV stand. But, I've decorated things just how I like them to make the space cozy and personalized. Purple is my favorite color so that is the main accent throughout the room. Here is a quick little tour of my cozy living room!
(Note: My apartment came fully furnished. If I bought a piece of furniture it will be noted.

Where it's from:
Hashtag sign- Target dollar spot
Trays- *both were gifts*
Candles- Both from Bath and Body Works
Mug- Anthropologie
Seahorse- Hobby Lobby
Baskets- Hobby Lobby

I loved styling my little TV stand. It serves as for both decoration and function. In the bottom right hand corner I store all of my textbooks so they are easily reachable. But, they also make a nice stack to add some decor. Along the bottom I also have a Tory Burch shoe box, my journal from studying abroad, a One Direction teddy bear (because I'm still a huge fan), a box from Laudree, and a framed photo. On the top shelf I keep my more decorative books that lean up against a candle. To add a few fun touches I placed my Chip Disney mug and a silver pug figure. This shelf also holds my washi tapes I use in my planner. I found these fun baskets for 90% off at Hobby Lobby that work great!
(Note: The green accent wall comes with my unit... definitely not my first choice in color but it'll have to do.)

Styling my coffee table was something I was super excited about! Although mine is small I keep this stack of magazine and books to add a pop of pink. My Kate Spade coffee table book is finally on a coffee table which is also pretty exciting. I know only I get excited about coffee table books, but they are just so fun! On top I put this Bath and Body Works candle for added decor.

I picked up this textured pillow back my freshman year for my dorm. Now it's perfect for my apartment! The London pillow is from Hobby Lobby that I picked up on sale this summer.

And here is my beloved gallery wall! Be sure to check out my post all on my tips for a DIY gallery wall.
