I've NEVER Colored Inside The Lines. Why The Surprise?

The other day my mother was telling me how proud she was of me becoming a truck driver. I don't know why, since I've had oh, about a million jobs in my life (short attention span); what's the big deal about this one?

"
Every time I think about it, I just get happy." she said. "I love that you decided to do something, went to school and got the training and now here you are traveling the country. You've always been so good at using the crayons outside of the box."

"Mom, it's thinking outside of the box. Not using crayons outside of the box." I said.

"What is it? What are you saying?"

"Thinking outside of the box. As in, going against the grain. Not the norm. Being unconventional."

"Oh," she laughed, "Well, whatever it is, you're good at it."

Isn't it interesting how the personality traits you get reprimanded for as a child, are the same ones you get applauded for as an adult?

A conversation (full of mixed metaphors) between our moms would truly be spectacular.

And to answer your question, indeed. My sass has also become assertiveness. Go figure.

I third that.

If I had quit my job to go traveling when I was in my teens or twenties, I'd have been disowned. Now, it's like I'm the second coming of Jack Kerouac. But, you know, without the cirrhosis.
