Another been so long post - student art. I love student art! Inspired by Chad Kouri's Life Long Work Week the students at PSU are doing a PSU-GD experiment...nine design students are sharing a gallery space and working out in the public for all to see. What will happen? Check out their link below or visit them in the AB Gallery at Portland State University.

In our final post from the ECUAD Student Art Sale, we loved these unique ceramic pieces made by Stephanie French. Although they had a rough finish to them, they were all oven and food safe. Loved the unique handles on the mugs and set combinations.
There's always so much to take in at the sale, it's almost overwhelming. I feel like I could go back and see things missed the first time. The sale runs all weekend if you're in Vancouver.

Part 3 of our field trip today to ECUAD we came across these sweet ceramics by etsy.com/shop/gabriEllephant. These "elephant-themed" pieces were not only exquisitely made, but seriously adorably packaged all the way down to a ceramic elephant seal/medallion on the boxes (can you see them?) and on the bottom of the pieces too! Her wares included bowls, porcelain wishbone pendants, porcelain buttons, cups, and vases.

Continuing on our field trip at Emily Carr's Student Art Sale, we came across some stellar ceramics and bent wood veneer pieces. Here's a few. Above: Kelly Austin Design and below, recycled wood trays "Pirch" by Sepehr Jalali and Nicanor Santillan; and bent wood egg cups, "yema" (Crack n'eat) - no student name.
Just got back from Emily Carr's Annual Student Art Sale. There were some great pieces to be had. I'm just going to post this "mixed media" piece by J. Glesby at the moment as I prepare the other images to upload later. Kicking myself now for not buying it. The coloured pieces making up the river/road looked like cut up pieces from cardboard coffee sleeves that were coloured or painted and almost looked like a quilt from afar. Stay tuned!

Future Masters curated by Artsy!Dartsy! sponsored by IDSWest. Exhibition design by Edison & Sprinkles
Another exhibit at the IDSwest show this year was FUTURE MASTERS: Young Designers West.
In partnership with Artsy-Dartsy.com - Vancouver’s Art & Design Guide, FUTURE MASTERS was a way for design students and recent graduates to present their recent work to the public.
In their statement, "A majority of the submissions demonstrate boldness and pride in design’s capacity to better our world; work that is humanitarian in nature: from comforting sick children to considering the emotional need of people with disabilities. Architectural projects were also presented; they strive to step beyond the trivial notion of sustainability, reflecting on the lyrical nature of proper public-private integration."

Olivia Tabert is yet another lovely PDX student of the ridiculously awesome Kate Bingaman-Burt. Olivia's work is contagious, charming, and fun. Check it out! The above work was created in Lis Charman's classes. Along with being an amazing and inspiring educator, Lis is the fearless design program coordinator at PSU.

Silkscreen scarves by Hannah Campbell
On Friday Earl and I slipped away down to Granville Island to the Legendary Student Art Sale at Emily Carr University of Art and Design for a little dose of fresh young art from some local talent. I snapped a few photo's in a blur as there was so much to see. We had all but one hour and there was so much to take in.Unfortunately some of the photo's I took to keep tabs on each artist (as I usually do in these adventures), came out too blurry to read, so some of this beautiful art I'm showing here I don't have the names of the artist (boo). So if you are reading this and know/recognize the artist, please give me a shout or leave a comment. I'm hoping you will help! Nonetheless, as you can see, we have some awesome things to show. I know I missed so much, but here were some highlights! Thanks to Louise for supplying us with the student's names.
Above: Silkscreen scarves by Hannah Campbell (hcambpell2511[at]eciad[dot]ca), a second year photography student. These silkscreen prints on grey fleece are from a series of women she created and I just loved! I bought one and was thinking it would make a most beautiful wall hanging (folded in half off a wooden hanger) when I'm not wearing it. Love the images (very folk influenced) and reminds me of the late Margaret Kilgallen's work.
Ceramic retro thermos
Above: Ceramic retro thermos by Darcy Greiner (dgreiner[at]ecuad[dot]ca). Kicking myself for not buying 10 of these to line up on a future shelf in my kitchen (although there were only four). And no artist name! But aren't they awesome? ! Lids come off and become bowls. Perfect for Lipton's Chicken Noodle don't you think?
View of the gallery from the 2nd floor staircase.
Ceramic Tile Wall Art
Above: Ceramic Tile Wall Art by Marina Nazarova (mnazarova[at]ecuad[dot]ca). I really liked this artist, (who also had some large canvas paintings of similar subjects);and regret the photo I took of artist's name came out too blurry to decipher as well. Loved all the white space and elderly subjects.
Bear Portrait, Megan Leeburn
Loved this series of bear portraits by Megan Leeburn. Sadly the paintings were still wet, and seriously considered bringing that gentle bear home with me, but thought I'd wait till another time perhaps. Would love a large one of these one day if she made them.
Tiling Wall Mugs by Ryan Nussbacher
A total cool idea. Great packaging as well. Tiling Wall Mugs. Handles have slots for the wooden pegs to hang decoratively on the wall, looking like tiles. I love practical art like this.
All in all it was a nice show, and as is always the case, I'm sure I missed some gems. But it's always so exciting to find new talent and fresh ideas. Thanks to Louise from ECUAD for the special invite!

Portland State University's Friends of Graphic Design are presenting a new show this week called Love What You Do.
Exhibition: Thursday, November 5, 2009 – Friday, November 27, 2009
First Thursday Reception: Thursday, November 5, 2009 | 6-9pm
MK Gallery | 2nd Floor Gallery | PSU Art Building | 2000 SW 5th Ave. | PDX, OR
Exhibition Statement:
The education of a graphic designer is never finished.
We chose this field because it allows us to grow. It requires we spend our days thinking critically, scheming for solutions, investigating and observing the nuances of our visual world. Graphic design requires us to create new cultural content, invites us to tell the story of what we see and do.
We’ve learned that creating successful art and design requires a passionate dedication to the work we’re doing. The most interesting projects reveal unique truths about humanity.
The most touching projects allow a glimpse into the heart of the maker.
We are artists, illustrators, typographers, publishers, printmakers, web developers, writers, makers of diagrams and advertisements. We are observers, thinkers, and creators. We are graphic designers. We love what we do.

This weekend was the One of Kind Show here in Vancouver and so I headed out on a very crisp fall Sunday afternoon to check it out. One of my favourite things about going to the show is seeing the new student work highlighted there in a special "school section". And this year didn't disappoint. Starting off from Emily Carr University of Art and Design: Top (and just below), ceramic miniature bottles/vessels from Kate Beckett, in a creamy white and blue glaze (a show favourite)! No website. All artists can be contacted through the school. Click here for contact info.

(Below): Ceramic pendant by Gabrielle Burke, Emily Carr University of Art and Design
(Below): Anna Carruth - ceramic cups. (they looked so much more cooler in person). Emily Carr University of Art and Design
