September, one of my favourite times of year, brings with it an abundance of beautiful fall fruit and vegetables. This year our neighbour brought us a huge box of apples from her Uncle's farm and searching through our recipe archives here on Poppytalk for recipe ideas, I was surprised to see how many actual recipes we had using apples. From an immunity boosting Apple Cucumber Juice to Apple Cinnamon Drop Biscuits, here's a list of a few favourite healthy apple recipes over the years. Maybe you need inspiration too? With rhubarb season well on it's way, we're throwing it back this #tbt to this gorgeous cake recipe by Tessa Huff of Style Sweet CA and her cookbook, Layered, Baking, Building, and Styling Spectacular Cakes. Tessa's book is still a favourite, and her Swiss Meringue Buttercream has become a staple in my baking repertoire! This really is a gorgeous book (if you haven't happened upon it yet) which contains 150 recipes which also includes Tessa's gorgeous styling! (Recipe below)!

Disclosure | We have partnered with Penguin Random House to feature Martha Stewart's new cookbook, Martha Stewart's Slow Cooker and Breville Fast Slow Pro.
We may have found the ultimate holiday sleepover breakfast with this Apple French Toast (a recipe from Martha Stewart's Slow Cooker cookbook). This casserole is like a mash up of french toast and bread pudding all-in-one, with he surprise of diced apple and maple syrup. Make all the ingredients the night before, chill overnight, and slow (or fast cook) in the morning. We love that you can keep it warm on a low setting for any breakfast stragglers too. As recommended in the book, "serve with a side of crisp bacon for a salty, smoky contrast to the sweet French toast". Drizzle with a little cream and it's the perfect holiday morning treat. So so good!
This post is in partnership with Félix & Norton. Their "ready-to-bake" cookie dough will take your holiday baking to the next level.
This year we've been focusing on taking the stress out of the holidays as much as possible, making it a priority to spend more time enjoying the season and sharing quality time with friends and family. And so with that in mind, holiday baking has been something I've been wanting to take the stress out of as well. I wanted to come up with a few fun baking projects that we could make together with the family, but without the stress and mess. So when the folks from Félix & Norton asked us to come up with a recipe using their to-die-for "ready-to-bake" cookie dough, we were all in! We've created this recipe hack with the kids in mind —something that isn't too difficult, but has a big impact and is so delicious. This giant holiday themed ice cream sandwich is the answer. The combination of cherry candy cane sprinkled French vanilla ice cream, sandwiched between two giant dark and white chocolate chip cookies using their "ready-to-bake" cookie dough, is a definite must-have as far as we're concerned. So, so good! See how we made it below.
Due to popular demand and a bit of confusion, we created a separate and new post for our rainbow mini donuts which we originally published with our One Cake Two Ways how-to last year. As the donut recipe to top the cake was at the bottom of the post, many were missing it when we pointed it out on Instagram last week. So here it is, now with it's own link. Thanks for reading!
Here's a throwback recipe perfect for St. Patrick's Day. We loved this chocolate cookie recipe and vanilla ice cream combo that we posted last year, and the lucky charms add a fun Irish twist. Colour the ice cream green (or blue - as seen here), and you'll be ready to party with the best of them! Check out the recipe below.

This twist on a traditional breakfast makes for a perfect way to start a special day like Valentines. The english muffin is replaced with bannock, a simple, yet deliciously puffy fried bread, the ham is torched giving it a bit of a barbeque flavour (a trick we learned from a local chef here in Vancouver) and the hollandaise gets a spicy kick with a blend of dry spices from Club House using their Signature Blend of Sriracha & Lime and a nice hit of their ground pepper. The Sriracha & Lime, a blend of dry spices that delivers the garlicky vinegar notes and hot finish of the well-known hot sauce with the tangy taste of lime!
Counting down the days to Valentines and continuing on our month of love, today we're sharing a fun cake project, perfect for a special night in with the one(s) you love. I've been wanting to make a cake using edible decorating paper for a while now; and so when I found a set with a rose design I thought it would make a special cake for Valentines.
Woohoo it's finally here! It's Christmas Eve Eve, and we're signing off for a couple of days but before we do, a little holiday treat idea or even breakfast fun for everyone! Mini Donut Snowman Kabobs! This is a fun activity that kids can make (if they are really young, maybe use candy sticks instead which aren't as pokey) and even fun for us adults! How-to below.
I ran into the most adorable crabapples this past week which took me back to my childhood and my grandmother's crabapple jelly. I had to buy them just for their cuteness alone and thought they would probably taste great candied.
This recipe is super-easy; I didn't go the usual route with the sugar and corn syrup, instead I melted some very delicious cherry flavoured hard candies. So good with the tartness of the apples. Hat tip to Jenny Cookies who inspired me to place these apples on top of a cake. Such a perfect place for them! Check out the recipe below.
I came across a bag of marshmallow ice cream cones at our local grocers recently and instantly had to grab a bag (initially for old time sake), and then the thought came to try them on top of a cake. A super-easy way to add some "fun" to an other-wise regular cake.
We made this one yesterday for dinner guests, and for those of you interested, it's a 5 layer, pink vanilla cake with chocolate buttercream and a chocolate ganache on top. I'm still feeling the chocolate sugar rush as I write this, but totally worth it.
A few more pics and recipe after the jump!
One of the easier treats to make (I think), are chocolate-covered strawberries. For our wedding (over ten years ago), we made them as an addition to the dessert table. Back then we made a dark chocolate version, but have always wanted to try it using white chocolate. We saw a pretty version on instagram from Fluffgram also colouring the white chocolate pink, and so for an after dinner treat this weekend with friends, we had to try it. The white chocolate along with some pretty white and gold sprinkles, takes this dessert to a new level of pretty! I also melted the chocolate in the microwave (a tip Hulaseventy suggested to us) which is way easier than doing so over a double boiler. Here's how we made it!

Blueberry season (July/August) is upon us and this year we were surprised to find out our local blueberries are here a couple of weeks early, thanks to mild spring we had. If you saw our Snapchat last week you may have spotted a pic or two of these voluptuous berries, and just like last year, they are especially delicious. Must be all that sunshine we've been having. Perfect for a refreshing treat this summer!
Went to a great new restaurant last night that offers hands-on cooking classes. Well, it's not exactly brand new - they've just moved locations from downtown Vancouver to a cool, tree-lined busy area of town called Kitsilano that's a blend of treaded urban and laid back west coast weathered wood charm. A great addition to the neighbourhood. Nourish offers a fresh, local-sourced menu that's vegetarian friendly, and follows the same aesthetic for it's cooking classes that it offers in the same space. And a great space it is; original plank floors that still creak underfoot, high open ceilings and lots of clear space on the walls and floorspace. Nicely detailed by Arithmetic Creative. Interior design by Studio Coalesce.

Growing up a favorite treat was when my Mom was making a pie. She would save the scraps of the leftover pie dough, poke them with a fork, sprinkle with sugar and cinnamon and bake until a nice crisp. A homemade treat made with love. This recipe is based on that, and also our love for cinnamon toast. The combination of the salty butter and the sweet from the cinnamon and sugar toast mixed with some vanilla ice cream makes for a cake-like flavourful treat. Add a cinnamony-sugary pie crust to the mix and we're in heaven!
Tenderflake has been our go-to frozen pastry since we can remember. The products are convenient and provide risk-free baking at home (versus the stress of making pastry from scratch). In a crunch, we always grab a package of their mini tarts, fill with cherry pie filling and a dollop of whip cream which makes for a fast, delicious treat.
For this recipe you don't have to have an ice cream maker to make this ice cream, although we do include our favorite vanilla ice cream recipe here. The secret is in just mixing up your favorite vanilla ice cream with cut up chunks of cinnamon toast and scooping it into tart shells. It's that simple!
Check out the recipe below!
