It's been a few years, but it seems the Halloween season has brought a surge of Blacklettering to the masses. When I think of blacklettering, Gwen Stefani has always been a big fan, but this fall, we're seeing it everywhere from wedding dresses to gig posters; the gothic script has been popping up on our radar in a big way. Let's take a look~

Designers, Nicolas Damiens and Julien Sens recently created a collection of fonts with the intention initially to give musicians inspiration for writing lyrics using the actual handwriting of influential late songwriters, Bowie, Cobain, Cohen, Gainsbourg and Lennon. The idea might be purely imaginative, but at the same time the possible tribute we think would also inspire any creative. All fonts, dubbed Songwriters Fonts, are free and for personal use only. Let's take a look!

As promised at the beginning of the year, and thinking back on what inspired us to start the blog in the first place, back then when studying Communication Design at Emily Carr and our love for typography, we're returning some of that essence with an old series we originally started back then, Font Fridays. This past February I posted about a font called Pee Pants Script (the funniest font name ever) and today I received an email from designer Shannon Lowry of Round Robin Press (remember her plantable cards); who recently designed a letterpressed wedding invitation set using the font, and I just had to post it here. She did such an awesome job, from the invite itself to the cute menu cards and pre-ceremony festivities. I just love the stringed lights. See it all at her blog here. Apply is a free texture tool from You Work for Them that allows you to customize any font you wish with an array of inky splatters and sprays. Copy your type layer and paste in place, then change the top layer to the Apply OpenType font to easily get the desired effect. It was a nice surprise to see a new version of Misprinted Type this week when I happened to stop by. After three years of working on new typefaces and several site layouts, Recife offers up a ton of new stuff from commercial typefaces (see Handmade above), to free fonts (which we posted about back in 2005) along with a couple new ones. And some lovely brushes as well. Be sure, as with his other site versions, to click around the background of his site, for secret messages and goodies. Misprinted Type Version 4.0 here.

Victory (pay font)

I visited the Vtks site today and was thrilled to see some fonts there that I hadn't seen before. Some free some pay, and all beautiful! Here's a few favorites (love that Velhos Tempo's one), and there's many more at their site, just click on fonts.
