- October 14-18 2013 At the IEEE Vis 2013 an alpha version of my XEPA project was in the art show, and I presented a related paper "XEPA: Intelligent Sculptures as Experimental Platforms for Computational Aesthetic Evaluation".
- Jul 2012 - Jun 2013 As part of the 16th International Conference of Information Visualization (France), and the 9th International Conference on Computer Graphics, Imaging, and Visualization (Taiwan) images from my series Generative Bodies were shown in the DART 2012 online gallery.
- July 6 - 10 2013 At ACM GECCO 2013 in Amsterdam I presented a tutorial titled "Computational Aesthetic Evaluation: Automated Fitness Functions for Evolutionary Art, Design, and Music." I have made the slides and notes available here (slow 18 MB download).
- Feb 8 - Mar 29 2013 My light sculpture RGBCA #2 was shown in the Project Room at the Richard Levy Gallery in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
- December 2012 I exhibited a new piece, "TSP Analytics", at the Exhibition of the 15th International Conference on Generative Art in Lucca, Italy. I hope to have documentation of the piece online here in the art section soon.
- December 2012 I presented my paper "Generative Art After Computers" at the 15th International Conference on Generative Art held this year in Lucca, Italy.
- Oct 26 - Dec 14 2012 In association with ISEA 2012 I showed some work in the group show "Weird Science." at the Richard Levy Gallery in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
- Fall 2012 My chapter Computational Aesthetic Evaluation: Past and Future appeared in the new book "Computers and Creativity" published by Springer Press. I also appear in a discussion chapter that includes Harold Cohen, Frieder Nake, David Brown, Paul Brown, Jon McCormack.
- August 6 2012 At SIGGRAPH 2012 I taught a course titled "Computational Aesthetic Evaluation: Steps Towards Machine Creativity." I have made the slides and notes available here (slow 18 MB download).
- December 2011 I exhibited a new piece, "ChromaVox", at the Exhibition of the 14th International Conference on Generative Art in Rome. I hope to have documentation of the piece online here in the art section soon.
- December 2011 I presented my paper "The Evolution of Style and Gigantism in New Media Art" at the 14th International Conference on Generative Art held this year in Rome.
- November 2011 A number of short articles based on the February 2011 CAA/Leonardo session noted below were published in the Artnodes Journal of Art, Science, and Technology including my article Shot by Both Sides: Art-Science And The War Between Science And The Humanities
- February 2011 I presented a talk at the College Art Association meeting in a session co-sponsored by Leonardo. My talk was titled "Shot by Both Sides: Art-Science and the War between Science and the Humanities," and related publications are expected to be announced later in 2011.
- December 2010 I presented my paper "Complexity, Neuroaesthetics, and Computational Aesthetic Evaluation" at the 13th International Conference on Generative Art in Milan.
- June 2010 RGBCA (#1) debuted at the Digital Intelligence / Analogous Interactions show at Devotion Gallery as part of the International Computer Music Conference. This new work exhibits complex behavior using a vertical array of 49 multicolor light sources.
- May 7 - 30 2010 Work from my Breeding Paintings project was shown at Devotion Gallery in New York City as part of the Scrapcycle (reuse/recombine) show.
- April 2010 My article "Against Reductionism: Complexity Science, Complexity Art, and Complexity Studies" was published in PhysicaPlus - the Online Magazine of the Israel Physical Society.

- Dec 2009 I presented my paper “Truth to Process – Evolutionary Art and the Aesthetics of Dynamism” at the 12th International Conference on Generative Art in Milan.
- Sep 2009 I participated in an invitational seminar "Computational Creativity: An Interdisciplinary Approach" at the Schloss Dagstuhl in Wadern Germany. My position paper “Thoughts on Computational Creativity” is available online.
- Aug 2009 For ACM SIGGRAPH 2009 I collaborated with Carol LaFayette, Fred Parke, and Ann McNamara to present an immersive environment titled “I'm not there: extending the range of human senses to benefit wildlife corridors."
- May 2009 I was one of two U.S. artists invited to exhibit at the digital art biennial Artware5 in Lima, Peru.
- March 2009 I was invited to participate in the "Systems of Sustainability" conference sponsored by the University of Houston Cynthia Woods Mitchell Center for the Arts and Blaffer Gallery.
- Dec 2008 I presented my paper “What is Complexism?” at the 11th International Conference on Generative Art in Milan.
- Sep 2008 I'm thrilled to announce that I've joined the graduate school faculty at Texas A&M University in the Department of Visualization as an Assistant Professor.
- Jul-Aug 2008 The group show Breaking New Ground is reviewed in this issue of Art Papers, and includes an image of one of my pieces as an illustration.
- Jun 12 2008 In conjunction with the group show Breaking New Ground, I gave a short talk along with other artists at the Spruill Gallery in Atlanta.
- May 9 - Jun 26 2008 A couple of my generative lightbox drawings created with my GA1 and GA2 software were shown as part of the group show Breaking New Ground at the Spruill Gallery in Atlanta.
- Jan 2008 The book "The Art of Artificial Evolution", edited by Penousal Machado and Juan Romero has been released as part of the Springer Natural Computing Series. I've contributed a chapter titled "Complexism and the role of evolutionary art".
- Feb 2007 One of my generative drawings realized with my GA2 software was shown in a group show in Manitoba Canada called Allegories of the Genome. A corresponding website and catalog can be found here.
- Nov 9 2006 - Jan 9 2007 A number of my generative lightbox drawings created with my GA1 software were shown at Mason Murer Projects in Atlanta. One has been left on more or less permanent display.
- Jun 2006 I contributed an article to a special issue of the digital quarterly Vague Terrain focusing on generative art. In the article "Generative Art and Rules-Based Art" I discuss and compare the two using examples from the shows "Logical Conclusions" and "Beyond Geometry." Click here to view the article.

- Mar 27 2006 "At the Edge of Art", a book by Joline Blais and Jon Ippolito, is now available. It features profiles of technology-based art by more than 50 artists, including my Breeding Paintings work.
- Feb 17 2005 At the College Art Association annual conference I presented a talk titled "Using Advanced Networks for International Collaborations in the Arts" presenting artistic, technical, and how-to information for university artists.
- Dec 14 2004 I presented the paper "What is Emergence? Generative murals as experiments in the philosophy of complexity" at the annual Generative Art Conference in Milan Italy.

- Jun 17 2004 At the annual New Media Consortium conference I gave a talk called "Digital Art in the Physical World". This talk included overviews of physical computing, robotic art, generative art, and rapid prototyping.

- Sept 26 - Nov 28 2003 The show COMPLEXITY, that I curated with Ellen K. Levy, traveled to the Gallery of the Federal Reserve Board in Washington D.C.

- Feb 21 2003 I chaired a session at the 2003 College Art Association meeting in New York City called "Complexity and Emergence".
- Oct 16 2002 In conjunction with the show COMPLEXITY I was part of an artists panel discussion at SUNY New Paltz along with Remo Campopiano, Frank Gillette, and Ellen K. Levy.

- Sep 14 - Nov 24 2002 The show COMPLEXITY runs at the Dorsky Museum at SUNY New Paltz. This was the first major fine art museum exhibition featuring artists explorations of complex systems and emergence. I co-curated this show with Ellen K. Levy.
- Jul 29-30 2002 At the Workshop on Complexity and Philosophy I presented a draft paper titled "Against Reductionism: Complexity Science, Complexity Art, and Complexity Studies". This draft was later integrated into other writings.
- Jun 19-22 2002 At the 2002 New Media Center Summer Conference I gave a talk titled "Using Internet2 to Create Multisite Performance Events".
- Jun 9-14 2002 At the 2002 International Conference on Complexity Science I gave a talk titled "On Four Modes of Artistic Engagement with Complexity".
- May 25 2002 I acted as co-curator (working with curator Douglas Irving Repetto) in organizing the one day event ArtBots: The Robot Talent Show. Press coverage included articles in the New York Times and the Times of India.
