Sizzix | New blog post | Recycling maps for cards and layouts

 by Paula Pascual

Last week I recorded a little segment for a UK TV program called The Crafty Beggars in which I showed some of my projects upcycling old papers including maps. Inspired by that I created two projects using old maps and the Big Shot Starter kit, one card and one quick layout. Maps are great as they have pattern, colour and they are free!

I just used the Sizzix Big Shot Starter Kit  | 659765, maps, a used stamp, white and Kraft card, cork and spray ink.

Before I did anything, I glued the thin old map paper on to white card using spray adhesive. Then I die cut it using the larger Framelit heart from the Starter kit.
I then layer them together over a square piece of Kraft card. I attached it using foam pads and then added it to the card.

Finally, I added this lovely used stamp - rescued from a packaged sent from my best friend from the USA - and glued it to the card.

To make this quick and easy layout, I simply trimmed a piece of white card to measure 6 x8 inches. I spray gently the colours on the card and let then dry. Then I die cut the 1 from the map using one of the circle dies and the Heart using a cork thin sheet.

I hope you like it and inspires you to make use of those old maps and books laying around!

Big Shot Starter Kit | Cards

Just a quick card I made back in 2012 using the Big Shot Starter kit. I love this one!

I used an old map of Paris to die cut the different hearts (larger Framelit die), then I stamped the message using one of my Sentiment stamp and die cut with the smaller label Framelit.

The rectangled were die cut using the Sizzix Framelits Die Set 10PK - Rectangles #2 658610.

I am so happy the Starter kit is back!

Big Shot Starter kit | Back on | Available now

Good news, the standard Big Shot Starter Kit is back!
All the dies and the embossing folder are the same designs, but the two Sizzlits including the intricate butterfly have been transformed in to Thinlits and Framelits so it will be easier to use.

This is one of the cards that I made originally for the kit.
I cant wait to play again with the Big Shot Starter Kit.

New video: A DIY solution to Adding extra permanent pressure to your dies

Another video with die cutting tips, this time about adding extra permanent pressure to certain dies or certain areas of the die so that you don't need shims.
You can do the same tape technique with wafer thin dies, just make sure that no sticky is exposed!
The sticky back plastic I used is this one:

Film Self-Adhesive Transparent Protector Fablon
It comes in several lengths. Of course, I chose the super sized one!

The dies I have used are:

The Heart Frame Tutorial

I usually take this frame that I made last year to my workshops and demos and always gets a lots of questions on how did I do it. The funny thing is that i took step by step photos while I was making it, but then I forgot where they were until today. So here it goes, the full tutorial. Enjoy!

I started with one of the cheapest Ikea frames. I die cut twelve hearts using the Bigz die from the Starter kit using white mountboard. I prefer mount board to chipboard because it has white edges and the top tecture is smoother so more things you can do to the top. Then I painted them all using Paperarsty's Fresco paints in an assortment of colour using foam pads to dab the colour in.

Once that paint was dry, I proceed to cover each one with a different medium to get different textures in. I used Crackle glaze, Glue & Seal...

Kroma crackle, Cosmic Shimmer glue... they will all give a different effect. If it was now, I would definitely try some of the new DecoArt mediums, like the Texture crackle.

Once those coats were dry, I coated them with a thin acrylic coat using Paperartsy's Nougat.

This are some of the effects I got. the one on the left is Kroma Crackle but not completely dry. The one on the right is the glue one.

Little by little the hearts were taking texture.

Once I was happy with the texture, I proceed to add embellishments and more die cuts. i used Teresa collins embellishments and the Big Shot Starter kit dies.

I painted and crackled the frame to make it all coordinating. Finally, I attached them to the plastic that comes with the frame. I like to suspend things on to the outside of the plastic so that it has more texture.

A few close ups. the papers on the back are also Terese Colllins.

And, again, the finished frame.

Messy stuff doesn't have to look messy and complicated, if you don't want to. You can make it as you like!

Valentine's card using the Sizzix Big Shot Starter kit

So, this is this week's third posting, but don't get use to it! For someone who is not too keen on this day, I surely give it a lot of attention.

I thought I would share the card I made for my husband for this years Valentine's Day.
I was inspired by the frame with the scalloped hearts that I shared the other day.

I used this time the Sizzix Big Shot Starter kit die cutting the largest Heart from the Bigz die and the Framelit. As patterned papers I used Carte Postale from Basic Grey. And instead of red, I coloured the inner heart green as it is my husbands favourite colour.

Simple, muted colours that I hope Omar will like!
Happy Valentine's Day!

Bottle Tops flattened with the Big Shot: a good old technique

Flattening Bottle tops with a die cutting machine is something of an old technique. I first got my bottle tops about nine years ago. Apart from an project I did in 2010 that I forgot completely about, I hadn't done much with them.
However, this week I needed some magnets for my fridge and after some suggestions from my Facebook friends I decided to use the Bottle tops to make some magnets.

The unflatenned tops could be used as well they are pretty as they are. But flattened they look like rosettes and they dont have as sharper edges.

Depending which sandwich you layer using the Big Shot platforms and cutting pads, you can get a more or less flat effect, mucho more visible in real life that on the photos.

The one on the left was flattened by using the Sizzlits layering of pads - Tab 1 and both Cutting plates.
The one on the right was flattened using the Tab 2 and just one cutting plate - I put a protective acetate sheet between the top and the platform to make sure I did not damage it.

To cut the photo I used the second smallest die from the Sizzix Framelits Circles #2. It is a 1" die which is what you would need for standard bottle tops. I like to use Framelits because you can see exactly what you cut as the blade is right on the inner edge, perfect for photos.

With a glue dot I glued the magnet  - this one is one of the extra strong ones that Bazzill used to do, they were fabulous, such a pity they are either discontinued or hard to find. But there are other ones by different manufacturers like Basic Grey, which are thinner albeit not as strong.
To secure the magnet in place, I used the left over 3D circle foam pads from Stix2 and then place a piece of paper. This will secure the magnet in place for longer, otherwise the force of the magnet will eventually make it to come unstuck.

And here you have the ones I made for my fridge.
All, of course, featuring my furry baby, Wasabi.
