7 Year Anniversary

Seven years ago this weekend, this website started in a basement in my parent's house on the South Shore of Long Island. It has grown in ways I never ever thought possible. Gaining access to gigs, shaking hands with some of my musical heroes, landing a blogging gig at Huffington Post and at one point, the world's oldest magazine - The Spectator in England. This site has been like a child of mine and watching it grow and it being a passport to my passion has been incredible. From the bottom of my heart and all of my soul, thank you for reading and coming back. It really means the world to me and the small staff we have, we appreciate it.

Thank you again and here is to another year in the books!

Here is what some of our favorite artists have said about us in the past:

“One of the most fun-loving and forward-thinking blogs in the world, and run by one of the nicest guys in the business. Thank you Sal and Officially a Yuppie for getting in there so early with your support." Love from Chapel Club

"Best thing I've seen on the internet since the panda that sneezes.” - Matthew Whitehouse, The Heartbreaks

"Sal and his peeps at OfficiallyAYuppie.com are doing an amazing job of covering fresh, creative music and the entire NYC scene! They're not too hip for the room, but definitely have hip taste." - Doug Wimbish, Living Colour

“I read www.officiallyayuppie.com every week. Sal has his finger on the pulse of both commercial and independent music and entertainment. His blog has something for everyone and his interviews are always insightful. Plus, Sal's a great dude!” – Elliot Jacobson

“Thanks for these great questions” – Mary Foresberg Weiland

“So, does this make me a Yuppie now?!” – Mickey Leigh, Joey Ramone’s brother

“Thank you for the interview. I really appreciate the interest in my project. Be well” –Ben Kenney of Incubus

“It was good speaking with you. All the best.” Ian Mackaye

“No Crap Questions” – Rab Allen, Glasvegas

"Officially a yuppie! Thanks a great name for a site!" - Andrew W.K.

"Thank you for taking time out to speak with me and caring about us and what we do," - Anthony Green, Circa Survive

"It was a pleasure," - Peter Hook, Joy Division / New Order

"Really enjoyed this interview," - Photographer Natalie Curtis, Ian Curtis' daughter

Quick News

Slick English indie band, The Heartbreaks have confirmed they will release a new album in early 2014.

London quintet Chapel Club are calling in quits. Taking to Facebook, the band announced they are parting ways. They said, "As of last week's show in London, Chapel Club is no more. We don't like to think of it as splitting up, because we all still get along very well and the word 'split' implies a kind of collapse or implosion, something ugly and destructive and inevitable. That's not how it feels to us. It's more like we're setting CC aside as having outlived its usefulness. Despite all the amazing fans around the world and all the fun we've had over the last four years (for whom and for which we will always be deeply grateful), Chapel Club as a creative entity has collected a lot of baggage. And lugging that around just started to seem unnecessary. Maybe you'll meet us again in other guises; we obviously don't intend to stop making music (or other things). Who knows. The main thing is you helped us to learn a lot and to make some pretty great memories in the process. And maybe a few good songs. Thank you for the opportunity, and see you around."

Legendary New York City venue, Roseland will unfortunately close it's doors in April. Billboard reported the news this past weekend. The venue, which opened at the turn of last century has played a key role in the city's live musical legacy. It has also been the home to some of our favorite gigs like Bjork in 2012, New Order in 2012, Radiohead in 2011, Atoms For Peace in 2010, Them Crooked Vultures in 2009, Bloc Party in 2008, and so many more.

Courtney Love will be releasing her autobiography, My Story, in December.

FINALLY! The long await Stone Roses documentary, Made of Stone, directed by Shane Meadows will arrive on DVD in the US in December.

QUICK SPINS

ThundercatApocalypse
Every artist making a second album needs to pay attention – this is how you do it! Brainfeeder bassist Thundercat goes into orbit to create one of the years best albums and show off his dynamic range more than before. Apocalypse is a vivid, colorful, jazz, funk, rock, prog, dance showcase that fuses genres so perfectly together. Think if Flying Lotus had Justin Timberlake in a studio with Miles DavisBitches Brew-era band and their style as JT’s backing band and was told to make a record with the spirit of early Michael Jackson, well, that is what Thundercat just did. I dare you, in fact, I double fucking dare you to try and sit still listening to this album or not attempt to be blown away by this perfect craftsmanship.
FINAL GRADE: A+

Portugal. The Man Evil Friends
While Portugal. The Man have released a record every year from 2006-2011, many fans scratched their heads as to why a record never came out in 2012, yet, the band had an answer – they got a call from Danger Mouse and he wanted to work with the Portland via Alaska art rockers. Pushing back whatever would have came out last year, PTM started fresh with Mouse and managed to create one of the best albums of their career and really show off to fans that it was worth the wait. Evil Friends is the result of hive minded collaborators, artists, and raw musical talent hard at work. While Danger Mouse added his thumbprint to the bands signature psychedelic sound, he never took anything away from it, in fact he added more. Evil Friends hears elements of funk and jazz, and even slight touches of reggae in the mix. This is the record that should skyrocket the bands already massive fanbase and bring on a broader appeal to those living under a rock that have never paid attention before.
FINAL GRADE: A

Queens of the Stone Age - …Like Clockwork
Josh Homme and co. return for an epic comeback and a fantastic display of pure rock and roll. Queens of the Stone Age pack all the punches with help from Dave Grohl on drums, production by Trent Reznor, and former bassist Nick Oliveri back on board to lend a hand, yet, more superstars like Elton John and Arctic Monkeys’ Alex Turner display their talents for what could be Queens’ best album since their 2002 breakthrough, Songs for the Deaf.
FINAL GRADE: A

RhyeWoman
The tender debut from Canadia / Danish, LA based Rhye is a stunning achievement in R&B, proper dubstep, and trip-hop that could be played when the night is winding down or time for baby making music to be put on.
FINAL GRADE: A-

Dillinger Escape PlanOne of Us is the Killer
The mathcore titans return and never fail to deliver the goods. It is amazing that over a decade in this business and doing this, New Jersey’s Dillinger Escape Plan manage to make record after record that outdoes the last and find an astonishing way to get harder, faster and much more aggressive than before.
FINAL GRADE: A-

The DigTired Hearts EP
Following the release of last years beautiful and lush Midnight Flowers LP, The Dig return with an EP of new songs to hold fans over while a new album gets made. Taking the sci-fi rock elements that gained them attention in New York City and combining it with some of the atmospheric moods of Flowers, Tired Hearts hears a band progressing in beautiful ways, but, alas it is just a tease to what is to come.
FINAL GRADE: B+

Chapel ClubGood Together
Take everything you know about London’s Chapel Club and throw it out the window. After releasing their stellar debut, Palace in 2011, Chapel Club return with a fresh new sound that manages to still stick to the blueprint of the band but adds much more dynamics and colors. Combining cold wave and electronica together with singer Lewis Bowman’s poetic lyrics, their new direction seems to be good together.
FINAL GRADE: B+

AnamanaguchiEndless Fantasy
The band that helped Scott Pilgram take on the world is back with their latest studio LP and they are more fun than ever before. The chip-tune electronic band comes back with Endless Fantasy, a record that is sure to take you back to the days of playing old school Nintendo and Sega while making you want to throw a flash mob dance party wherever you are.
FINAL GRADE: B+

The Orb / Lee “Scratch” PerryMore Tales From The Observatory
After last years fantastic mash-up of electronic titans The Orb and reggae legend, Lee “Scratch” Perry, the mash-up continues with the same style of rhasta flow over blips and beeps.
FINAL GRADE: B+

Bad RabbitsAmerican Love
The Boston based rock / funk  band release their long awaited debut and have created a dance party that will get any back yard BBQ, trip to the beach, or house party rocking this summer. After a slew of acclaimed EP’s, American Love takes the energy of the bands popular live shows and showcases what they can do in the studio – still have as much fun as humanly possible while making good music.
FINAL GRADE: B+

Kisses
The LA fun-in-the-sun duo return for more neo-new wave colorful vibes and the soundtrack to your summer.
FINAL GRADE: B

Shouting Machines Grownass Man
The other project featuring Bon Iver’s Justin Vernon released their debut after an acclaimed set at Coachella earlier this year. The Shouting Machines much more energetic than anything quiet and shy Vernon has done before, the band takes folk, bluegrass, and delta blues and fuses it all together in a nice Americana style tribute.
FINAL GRADE: B

TribesWish to Scream
After last years fantastic debut, Baby, England’s Tribes relocated to Los Angeles and got a bit strange and funky. For their second record the band dropped their slick Britrock sound and got heavy on the funk and psychedelic tunes of early 60’s American rock. Much like Chapel Club, Tribes have altered their sound so much they are now two different bands under the same title, not that there is anything wrong with that, it is musical evolution of course, but Wish to Scream lacks the chutzpah that we loved so much, but still manages to be somewhat of a solid record while sounding totally different.
FINAL GRADE: B-

The So So Glos Blowout
The Brooklyn based pop-punk band that have been making waves since co-founding popular Brooklyn music venues like Glasslands and The Market Hotel have been well known throughout the five boroughs but Blowout will move them beyond New York City. A slick record of roaring guitars, polished vocals and pounding rhythms, Blowout is what will make So So Glos blow up in the months to come.
FINAL GRADE: B-

The FallRe-Mit
The 30th, yes, 30th album from Mark E. Smith and his latest incarnation of supporting cast members to post-punks The Fall is exactly what you expect – a cranky old man that knows more about the business, still pist after all these years and still cashing in. Smith is the last of the original punks and intends to stay that way, which is why we love him so.
FINAL GRADE: B-

Jimmy Eat WorldDamage
Linking up with Alan Johannes (Them Crooked Vultures, Sound City Players, Queens of the Stone Age) Arizona’s Jimmy Eat World deliver their eighth studio record. Damage is the sound of a band maturing past a scene (the emo, post-emo, mid 00’s era) and still crafting solid tunes and music while becoming family men, growing up, and still savoring their moment in the spotlight. Damage is a solid record from a band that has consistently given solid music their whole career, longtime fans will love this album.
FINAL GRADE: B-

CSSPlanta
Brazil’s once rising funk, samba-rock, new wave, rave-rock return with their fourth record, and marking their comeback they hired David Sitek of TV on the Radio to mand the controls of Planta. Production wise, the record rocks like it should thanks to Sitek’s vision, musically it lacks the punch for a big comeback and feels a bit redundant from what they have given us in the past.
FINAL GRADE: C+

Face to Face Three Chords and Half a Truth
The legendary California punk / ska band return with their eighth record and bring a more “classic” punk sound to the mix. Three Chords and Half a Truth was produced by the bands longtime members Trevor Keith and Scott Shiflett, yet, it would have been a bit more beneficial to this iconic band to maybe work outside their own box and hear ideas from another producer, the record may be a throw back sound, but it is nothing that we have not heard before.
FINAL GRADE: C

Gucci ManeTrap House 3
Fresh out of his acting performance in Spring Breakers and his first album since being released from jail, southern rapper Gucci Mane sticks to the uninspiring southern rap basics of money, power, cars, drugs, and women as his cliché topics fall just as flat as his lyrics and flow.
FINAL GRADE: D

Six Year Anniversary

It is hard to imagine that it has been six years since the very first post went up on this website. Recently, while Hurricane Sandy pounded the East Coast we realized how lucky we are to be from this area. This site was born in a Long Island basement, then moved to Brooklyn and now, we call Queens home, we are proud to be from here and we are not going anywhere!

From the countless interviews and concerts we have covered, this train keeps rolling and we have you to thank for it. Thanks for reading, experiencing and looking at our words and thoughts. To all the artists, managers, labels, agents, publicists (There are too many of you to list), thanks for everything and all the help along the way.

To continue our celebration, here is what some of our favorites have said about us.

“One of the most fun-loving and forward-thinking blogs in the world, and run by one of the nicest guys in the business. Thank you Sal and Officially a Yuppie for getting in there so early with your support. Hopefully see you again real soon." Love from Chapel Club

Quick News

Coldplay will cap off their massive touring year with a live album in November called Live 2012. Much like they did for their Live 2003 record, they hand selected their favorite cuts from various shows around the world. Also like Live 2003, their will be a version of the record that comes with a live DVD.

Following a reported on-stage "meltdown" at the iHeartRadio Festival in Vegas over the weekend, Green Day front man Billie Joe Armstrong has checked himself into rehab. The band have postponed all current dates and appearances.

Tegan and Sara have named their new record, the album Heartthrob will be out later this year.

Former Thursday frontman Goeff Rickley will be releasing a free mixtape in the coming weeks. Rickley tweeted,"Mix tape #1 coming soon. Free new songs for everyone that supported @thursdayband for the last 15 years. xo -G W Rickly"

Odd Future spin-off group, Mellowhype will release their new album Numbers next month. Take a look at the tracklisting below:

The legendary Throbbing Gristle have shared details of their new album. It will be a double album that contains a  reinterpretation of Nico's 1970 album Desertshore and another album, The Final Report. The double album will be out on November 26. The Desertshore cover album has been in the works for a while but production on the project stopped after Gristle member Peter "Sleazy" Christopherson passed away in 2010. The band chose to release the record on that particular day in November because it is the second anniversary of his death. The covers record will contain contributions from Antony of Antony and the Johnsons, Marc Almond of Soft Cell, Blixa Bargeld, Sasha Grey, and Gaspar Noé.

English band Chapel Club are doing something really unique and amazing. The band launched a new project, something they don't think anyone has done before and the basis is for fans and musicians to remix one of their new songs, "Good Together" and they will let the person or persons behind the remixes keep the royalties and money should they sell the song. For more info, go to the band's site by clicking HERE and to download the stems.

How To Destroy Angels have released the cover of their new EP, take a look below, the EP arrives in November.

QUICK NEWS

Former Gallows front man, Frank Carter's new band Pure Love have named their debut album. The record, Anthems will be released in October.

Chapel Club have posted four new songs from their forthcoming second record. Still no word as to when the follow-up to last years brilliant, Palace, will be released but listen to the songs HERE.

After reforming in 2010, Suede played their first brand new song over the weekend at The Hop Farm Festival in England. The songs, "Sabotage" and "For the Strangers" are the only new songs the band have played live since their reformation two years ago.

It has been confirmed by NME, that The Strokes are working on their fifth album. The follow-up to last years subpar, Angles, was noted by guitarist Albert Hammond Jr.'s father, Albert senior to the British magazine, Albert senior said, "Albert says that the stuff they're doing is incredible. They're doing it themselves with their friend, engineer and producer. He just says 'Dad, it's incredible'."

QUICK NEWS

Jarvis Cocker told NME what is up with Pulps future plans. Cocker said, "I suppose once you've done that, the next thing is; would you make some new music? I've enjoyed the fact that we haven't been doing any new stuff, because I feel that's kept it quite simple. It's hard one. We haven't been in the studio or anything. I don't know what will happen in the future."

Englands Chapel Club have something brewing in their system. Their website currently features a clock counting down to an unknown announcement.

Could Jack White produce the new Rolling Stones record? Keith Richards believes the possibility could be there after Richards just worked with White on some cuts. Richards told Rolling Stone magazine, "I enjoy working with Jack. We've done a couple of tracks. I don't know if ever considered that it was actually, like, master cuts. But at the same time if Jack wanted to do it, I'd probably say, 'Yeah.'' I know Jack pretty well. He's a lovely player."

Gallows will release their third album and first with new singer Wade McNeil in September. The band self-title will contain 12 tracks. Take a look at the tracklisting below:
Victim Culture'
'Everybody Loves You (When You're Dead)'

London Rocks in 2012

London Rocks In 2012
by Linn Branson*

We may still be in the throes of an icy winter, but looking ahead to 2012 there are some very hot musical prospects emerging to melt your eardrums and warm your soul. And, pleasingly for this particular Londoner, the capital appears to be hothousing a thrusting multitude of artists ready to break out of their cocoons and spread their indie wings far and wide over the next 12 months.

So if you want to know what is making London’s heart beat – and hopefully will do yours too – here are 20 of our most brightly shining stars right now. And for our US friends, take note of those with an * by their name. These are amongst the 75-plus artists from the UK who will be winging their way Stateside in March to showcase at SXSW (March 13 – 18) in Austin, Texas.

(Click on each band name to visit their websites)

AU PALAIS*

Brother and sister David and Elise Commathe – aka Au Palais - may be strictly Canadians, but as they are now London-domiciled – and we love them (especially since David has commented on how the city is “one that truly is at the forefront of music”) – the Toronto duo meet the cut. The dark, synth/poppers shimmer brightly in a similar vein to fellow N. Americans, Austra. Smoothly rich sounds of electronica – as evidenced on their recent Tender Mercy EP – over which Elise’s vocals glide like an ethereal angel. Tracks such as ‘Tender Mercy’ itself and the equally sublime ‘Pathos’ send a shiver of excitement down the spine for their 2012 debut album.

BRETON*

Five-piece south London-based enigmatic arty electronica outfit who combine elements of electro and math-rock into something that is both unique and atmospheric. Multi-instrumentalists, indie film-makers and audio-visualists and remixers (they’ve remixed the likes of Chapel Club and Local Natives), their style has been described as a ‘multimedia Massive Attack’. ‘Edward the Confessor’ was the first single taken from their forthcoming album Other People’s Problems which they will be headlining their first UK shows in support of from March 28.

CLOCK OPERA*

Clock Opera's sound is focused around an array of sampling, falsetto vocals and Guy Connelly's pioneering of 'chop pop' (breaking up sounds to create songs and hitting on metal objects purloined from skips, or his own kitchen). Signed to Moshi Moshi/Island, they last year won fans and hearts a-plenty with their upbeat, catchy rhythms when they played support dates with Metronomy, Crystal Fighters and Chapel Club; released the acclaimed ‘Lesson No. 7’, as well as provided remixes for Everything Everything and Feist, amongst others. Their first single of 2012, "Once And For All," is released on January 30, to be followed by Ways To Forget, their debut album, on April 9.

CRUSHED BEAKS

Lo-fi guitar and drums duo, Matthew Poile and Alex Morris, started out as a bedroom project in 2010. Their music based around wildly distorted and lushly hook-filled swirling melodies, via which they create a ‘fuzzy wall of noise’, is described by Poile as aiming to ‘make a huge pulsing soundwash, a panoramic sound that envelops the listener’. They released their debut single ‘Close Ups’/’Sun Dogs’ last November. Their next London show is on February 13 (with Fairewell).

DAUGHTER*

Via a series of demos in late 2010, word soon got around last year about this folk ensemble fronted by the engaging Elena Tonra that weaves in a glacial soundscape along the lines of Bjork. With sessions on BBC 6 Music, Radio 1 and support shows to Benjamin Francis Leftwich and John Grant, they packed a full 2011 with playing the BBC Introducing Stage at Reading/Leeds festivals and released the EPs His Young Heart in April and The Wild Youth in November. They kick of 2012 playing Eurosonic festival on January 11, before further UK dates with Ben Howard.

DRY THE RIVER*

“Emotive, lilting folk and upbeat impassioned rock”, is how Dry The River was described by Q magazine. Longlisted in BBC’s Sound of 2012, appearances at SXSW last year, together with festival touring during the summer and the completion of their debut EP, have won them over many new converts. With No Rest being glowingly hailed, expect to be hearing a lot more of this east London-based quintet. They kick off the new year with dates in the US (Jan 25 – The Troubadour, LA w/ Alabama Shakes; 26 – The Independent, San Francisco w/ Alabama Shakes; 30 – Glasslands Gallery, Brooklyn; Jan 31 – The Mercury Lounge, NY), before heading back to the UK for a headlining tour in the spring.

JAMIE N COMMONS

BBC Sound of 2012 longlister, Commons is a 22-year-old Bristolian, now London-based (by way of Chicago and the West Country) singer/songwriter, who blasts out a growl-driven vocal in the style of a fortysomething Delta bluesman. Style, youth, a passion for lyrical intensity across themes of violence and Old Testament retribution, and a debut EP, The Baron released in October, all make Commons a name to sit up and listen to.

KINDNESS*

Sensual gilded electro-pop soul, with an M83 feel, Kindness – aka Adam Bainbridge, whom some may recall from his 2009 emergence with The Replacements – was brought to label Moshi Moshi’s attention via a mixtape compiled by Concrete’s Lisa Milberg. Kindness is the working name of With just the total of two gigs (including a London squat eviction part), on the basis of these and two aired tracks last year, ‘Cyan’ and ‘SEOD’, the March 19 release of his debut album, World, You Need A Change Of Mind (through his own Female Energy label) is one to welcome expectently.

MICHAEL KIWANUKA*

Winner of BBC's Sound of 2012 is Michael Kiwanuka. The 24-year-old north London-born son of Ugandan parents, Kiwanuka is something of a folk/soul prodigy, compared to Bill Withers and Otis Redding. His debut EP Tell Me A Tale was released last June, followed by the second, I’m Getting Ready. His much-anticipated debut album Home Again arrives on March 26.

SCOUNDRELS*

Rock ‘n’ roll ‘n’ country ‘n’ blues rousing quartet formed in 2009 during a sojourn on a houseboat in Lafayette, Louisiana, before de-camping to London. Their self0-titled debut album came out last year, along with the ‘Gulf Of Mexico’ single and Sniff It Up EP. They ended 2011 supporting The Kooks, and start of the new year with a January (22nd) show in Newcastle.

S.C.U.M*

Post-punk art rock Whitechapel quintet, whose bassist Huw Webb is the brother of The Horrors’ Rhys – and there is a fair similarity between the musical styles of the two bands: dark, atmosheric, trippy. S.C.U.M released their debut album Again Into Eyes in 2011. They head out to Europe for late January/February dates, before returning to London for the NME Awards Show on February 24.

SPECTOR

Nominated in the BBC’s Sound of 2012 longlist, an appearance on Later…with Jools Holland and the launch of their ‘Never Fade’ last June being attended by the great and the good (and not to mention frontman Fred MacPherson making NME’s ‘Cool List’), this is a band well on its way. With a debut album and UK tour with Florence and The Machine (March 2-16), much is expected of the Dalston hipsters and their indie soul vibe.

SULK*

Shoegaze returns with this London-based outfit SULK. On their second single release, 'Back In Bloom', they are seemingly aiming to revitalise the genre in a psychedelic, dreamy kind of way that reminds of the baggy grooves of Primal Scream, Ride and the Stone Roses, with a sound filled with melliferous reverb-laced guitars.

THE GHOSTS

Formed at the end of 2010 by Alex Starling, formerly the of Ou Est le Swimming Pool, with drummer Ian Palmer (to be later joined by Rayna Ferner and Alex Sharman on keys, plus Dan Whiffin, guitar), after OELSP's vocalist Charles Haddon took his own life at Belgium's Pukkelpop festival that August. Their first single ‘Enough Time’ (produced by Tim Bran - The Charlatans, La Roux - is an enticing foretaste of what to expect on their first album, The End set for an April release: darkly sweet and seductive lyrics, layers of pounding drum beats, luxuriant guitar chords and arrangements that swell on big choruses. Think part Empire Of The Sun, part MGMT.

THEME PARK

Much touted four-piece indie funk-rock band (that air a nod to Talking Heads) comprising of brothers Miles (vocals, guitar) and Marcus Haughton (vocals, guitar); Louis Bhose (bass) and Oscar Manthorpe (guitar). Signed to Luv Luv Luv Records, they have just finished recording their debut album, a follow-on from the much-praised ‘Milk’ single release of December. From their first live show only last August, they have since supported Bombay Bicycle Club and Spector, with an upcoming opening date at Alexandra Palace on March 9 for Florence and The Machine.

THE MILK

The Milk started out as teen punksters, then reformed and came back with a change of style that bleeds a mix of soul, funk and hip-hop. And it looks like they have hit on a winning formula. Nominated for 'Best Breakthrough Artist' at the UK Festivals Awards last year, they have already played sell-out shows around London at venues like Camden Barfly and Jazz Café. With a big UK tour lined up for March/ April, and the release of their debut album, The Milk look like the cream of the crop right now.

TRIBES*

Complete with big choruses, interesting lyrics and energetic guitar riffs, Tribes created traffic chaos last summer on a video shoot on the streets of their native Camden, and now the four-piece grunge-pop outfit are likely to set 2012 on fire, a year after their formation. 2011 saw the release of the singles ‘We Were Children’, ‘Sappho’ and ‘When The Day Comes’. The new year begins with the arrival of their Nirvana/Lemonheads twinged debut album Baby on January 16, before they embark on the NME Awards Tour around the UK from February 8.

VARIOUS CRUELTIES

Named after a painting by American Art Pop exponent Edward Ruscha, Various Cruelties are a quartet, orginally from Leeds and now London-based, with a Northern Soul/ mod pop feel that’s somewhere in the mid 60s – 70s (they describe themselves as ‘shabby Motown pop’). They have supported The Vaccines and Mumford & Sons and appeared on Later…With Jools Holland, playing the title track – and just released single – of their April dropping debut album Great Unknown. Next scheduled are five UK dates between January 16 – 21.

WE ARE THE OCEAN*

Five-piece post hardcore band from the Essex reaches (Loughton) of London, 2011 saw the release of their second album Go Now And Live and singles ‘What It Feels Like’, ‘The Waiting Room’ and ‘Runaway’ all Radio 1 playlisted. They play a few UK dates this month, before embarking on a coast-to-coast US tour from January 24.

ZULU WINTER*

London-based quintet Zulu Winter have come from nowhere (if you discount their earlier incarnation as The Molotovs) in under a year to be on course to rival both their management stable-mates, The Vaccines and White Lies, and gather up a following by largely word-of-mouth following with their Friendly Fires/Wild Beasts brand of indie-pop. Following up their first single release ‘Never Leave’, Zulu Winter are currently working on their debut album with Tom Morris (due in May). They start off 2012 with an appearance at Eurosonic and a London date at XOYO as part of the Q magazine sessions.
