2017 Best New Artist: SZA

This superlative and tradition began in 2011 when a little British artist made a lasting impact on us, that artist James Blake, has gone on to release a handful of superb EP's, two more strong LPs, won the Mercury Prize and was nominated for a Grammy. Needless to say, we feel like we were correct in picking him and starting this award with him.

Other winners in following years included artists that were picked:

2011 - James Blake
2012 - The Heartbreaks
2013 - The 1975
2014 - Royal Blood
2015 - Kamasi Washington
2016 - The Lemon Twigs

This superlative is awarded to an artist who released a stellar debut within the last 12 months and this year's winner is certainly someone special and one to treasure.

SZA, who released her brilliant debut, ctrl, earlier this year, was someone who came on our radar in 2014 and we named her a Rising Artist in March of that year. Since then, we have kept an eye on the TDE artist and after three years of waiting, ctrl arrived and it was worth the wait. Arriving with one of the best debuts in recent memory, the rapper blends R&B, soul, funk, into her autobiographical LP. Featuring Kendrick Lamar, Travis Scott, Isaiah Rashad, among others, she pulls her influences from Tupac to the Fugees to Odd Future to give the new school a taste of the old in an artistic manner. If this is her first step towards stardom, we are strapped in for the ride forever.

2016 Best New Artist: The Lemon Twigs

This superlative and tradition began in 2011 when a little British artist made a lasting impact on us, that artist James Blake, has gone on to release a handful of superb EP's, a magnificent sophomore LP, won the Mercury Prize and was nominated for a Grammy. Needless to say, we feel like we were correct in picking him and starting this award with him.

Other winners in following years included artists that were picked by us and voted on by you the fans, which were:
2012 - The Heartbreaks
2013 - The 1975
2014 - Royal Blood
2015 - Kamasi Washington

Glam and classic rock has returned and it is thanks to two brothers from Long Island -- The Lemon Twigs. The band, who we picked as our September Rising Artist,  signed to 4AD over the summer and released their stellar debut, Do Hollywood. The glam-meets-baroque duo are a band that have been inspired by the 1970s and early 80s as well as the dangerous New York City-era their parents told them about. The teenage duo also write hooks that would make Brian Wilson and Lennon / McCartney proud. The harmonies, ideas and clever art they are crafting certainly makes them ones to watch and listen.

Their live shows are also something else. In an era when people say "rock is dead" a handful of teenagers from the same town as Bill Joel are out to prove everyone wrong.

2015 Best New Artist

This superlative and tradition began in 2011 when a little British artist made a lasting impact on us, that artist James Blake, has gone on to release a handful of superb EP's, a magnificent sophomore LP, won the Mercury Prize and was nominated for a Grammy. Needless to say, we feel like we were correct in picking him and starting this award with him.

Other winners in following years included artists that were picked by us and voted on by you the fans, which were:

2012 - The Heartbreaks
2013 - The 1975
2014 - Royal Blood

This year's artist for us was a no brainer. It is someone who tore down the music world with his debut, has worked in the past with Thundercat and Flying Lotus and was featured on Kendrick Lamar's stunning LP, To Pimp a Butterfly.

Earlier this week, his debut, The Epic, was our League of Their Own pick by us and now we are proud to make Kamasi Washington 2015's Best New Artist.

Congrats to Mr. Washington, you clearly left your mark on the year and here is to an exciting new year and many more to come!

2014 Best New Artist

The people have spoken! This year we asked you to pick our Best New Artist, simply because the class of 2014 were too hard for us to choose. Now, without further adieu, the 2014 Best New Artist is Royal Blood!

We have had this band on our radar since the summer and with support from Arctic Moneys, Dave Grohl, and recently Jimmy Page, the future for Royal Blood not only looks bright but their debut is proof to back the acclaim. The English duo mark the fourth UK band in a row to get this award which started in 2011 and the first winner was James Blake, followed by 2012 with The Heartbreaks, and last year with The 1975.

While Royal Blood are currently on the road again to support their debut, they will join Foo Fighters this summer for the band's stadium tour which will take them across North America to massive audiences.

Congrats to Royal Blood, you clearly left your mark on 2014 and here is to an exciting new year and many more to come!

Newsletter

This month we celebrate our 8th year anniversary and we are so thrilled to still be here and doing what we love. Thanks so much to everyone who has made this possible, in the coming weeks we will be running contests and have a few special postings about our eight years as a music site!

In the meantime, we have a special announcement, this year we need your help picking our "Best New Artist" award. We began giving away a "Best New Artist" superlative in 2011  after James Blake's stunning debut blew us away, we felt he needed more than just a number slot on our Top 10 Albums of the Year list.

In the past, winners have included James Blake, The Heartbreaks, The 1975, and now, it will be whoever you pick!

Now, as so many new artists have come out in 2014 and released a debut record / EP that has stunned us in so many ways, we want to hear from you to help us decide who the "Best New Artist of 2014" is. At the top of our site you will see a poll where you can cast your vote for one of our five nominees who are:
  • Arca
  • Ratking
  • Royal Blood
  • FKA Twigs
  • Bobby Schmurda

Between now and December 1, cast your vote and the artist with the most votes will be announced in December as to who the winner and artist who claims this years title of "Best New Artist."

EXCLUSIVE! The Heartbreaks INTV!

In 2010, we introduced you to English rock band The Heartbreaks, in the years that have followed since the welcomed introduction, they have stolen our hearts as musicians and as people. After releasing one of 2012's best albums with their debut, Funtimes, the band return this year with a new sound and new attitude, but still bring the same joy to music as they did four years ago. Their latest, We May Yet Stand A Chance, was released last month and the slick guitar work and Britpop sound has evolved into doo-wop meets classical and samba licks that will impress anyone that four guys from Northern England have created this sound and used it so perfectly. It is Phil Spector's glorious Wall of Sound meets the orchestras of Ennio Marricone with a Latin fury. As the band hits the European festival and tour circuit for the summer, we spoke to singer and guitarist Matthew Whitehouse about their new album, new sound, and when we can expect them back in the U.S. Take a look at our interview below:

The new album hears you take on a different sound, but still sticking to the fundamental principles as a band. Was that your intention going into the studio or did it just happen organically and unexpectedly?

I mean, everything we do happens pretty organically… It was a great process making this record as, while the first was recorded over such a long period with so many different people, this was just the four of us, and Producer Dave, in a studio for six weeks making exactly what we wanted to make. It gave a real cohesion to the sound and we were, for the first time in so long, completely on the same wavelength.

What did you learn about yourselves making this album that you didn’t know before?

That we’re right miserable bastards. Although I always had a suspicion.

Who were some of your influences making this album?

We really streamlined what we listened to for this record… I guess the template was roughly ‘melodramatic, widescreen pop’ and I guess that roughly incorporates Scott Walker, Echo and the Bunnymen, Ennio Morricone… We went to see Morricone in Verona when we were over playing a couple of shows last year in fact. Every human emotion over the course of a two hour show! Extraordinary.

The title of the record, “We May Yet Stand A Chance,” is a bold statement. What does it signify to you?

I think there’s a certain self-deprecation to it. Which is our sense of human (or lack of). It ties in with the lyrical theme of the record though really. Things often seem bleak but, you know, we may yet stand a chance.

The cover of the record is also pretty bold, it is the four of you pulling a casket into the sea. Why the morbid reference?

Well the first record, Funtimes, used all this bright iconography when really the album, lyrically at least, wasn’t a particularly happy one. And that went over everyone’s heads... We played it a bit more literal this time.

Is this your sink or swim record?

It’s our kitchen sink record.

The Heartbreaks have been a band that has seen such amazing highlights over the years. What has been the standout moment of your career thus far?

Oh, Sal! It’s gotta be New York… That was a real trip. Do you remember sitting on the 19th floor at the Standard and looking out over the meatpacking district and the high line and all those tug boats singing their deep and sonorous hymns of commerce? I think I was truly happy in that moment.

We know how much you love your hometown of Morecambe and how it still plays a key role in your music. How does the town still influence you?

It’s inescapable, I think. I used to feel like I’d been born a long way from where I was supposed to. But I guess that’s just the arrogance of anyone growing up in a small town. Now I know how important it’s been in shaping me and the band.

Did you ever think that hailing from such a small place that your dreams would come true?

Yes. We had unfailing belief in that.

The last time we all spoke was when you were in New York City in 2011 for Fashion Week. One wild night among us all, when can we, and I, expect you back here?

We’d love to go back. It’s just impossible not to feel coloured by the place. I miss it.

Quick Spins

The Horrors Luminous
The career of The Horrors has been a gradual incline and alteration in sound from when they first appeared on the music scene back in 2006. Back then, with their debut, Strangehouse, they looked like a poor mans version of My Chemical Romance. Then, in 2009, they returned with Primary Colours, a record that heard them channeling the angst into art and a contemporary Joy Division. Then, in 2011, they released the groundbreaking Skying, a record that heard them take the best of 80’s cold and new wave and giving it a modern spin. Now, with Luminous, they don’t transition too much from Skying but still manage to mature in all the right ways. Luminous is dark, cavernous, but also melodic and angelic. Luminous shines as another highlight in the magnificent career of The Horrors and only makes us excited for what is to come.
FINAL GRADE: A

Robyn & RoyksaapDo It Again EP
Sweden’s favorite pop acts are hitting the road this summer and to celebrate their joint venture, they release an EP of perfect pop. An EP from two careers birthed in a country that have given the world nothing but the best to dance on their own to.
FINAL GRADE: A-

Conor Oberst Upside Down Mountain
The greatest voice of America’s current generation returns with his latest solo album. Recorded in Tennessee, Oberst, never a stranger to the American frontier, takes a deeper look into his folk roots and American style with strong Nashville and Memphis influences on Upside Down Mountain.
FINAL GRADE: B+

The Heartbreaks We May Yet Stand A Chance
What if Frankie Valli fronted a flamenco band? That is what English lads The Heartbreaks have done with their sophomore album. Gone are the polished guitar licks but what is kept are the raging rhythm sections and catchy hooks and spicy acoustic guitar licks are added to make this record stand out from any album any English band will release this year.
FINAL GRADE: B+

BluGood To Be Home
The Los Angeles rapper returns with a bold double album about his upbringing, family, his roots, but most of all, the real side of Los Angeles that never gets mentioned in the media. While the record is a bit too long and loses some touch with a handful of filler tracks, Blu still manages to spit his heart out and give it all to showcase why he is one of the best rappers around today.
FINAL GRADE: B

AtmosphereSouthsiders
The Minneapolis hip-hop duo return with their latest album and bring forth, yet again, their raw, in-your-face, and personal lyrics about life, love and the persuit of happiness.
FINAL GRADE: B

Lily Allen- Sheezus
The spunky hip-popper, Lily Allen, returns after nearly seven years away from music so she could start a family. Sheezus is Allen returning to form and speaking her mind about the current state of pop and pop culture since she has been away. With that being said, she knows how to craft a great pop tune but what the record lacks is production. The beats and sounds on Sheezus sound more like something made on Garage Band or a basic Casio keyboard that hold the record back from being a truly memorable comeback.
FINAL GRADE: B

The Pains of Being Pure at Heart Days of Abandon
The Brooklyn hipster band come back with a great summertime album that gives Smiths fans a reason to rejoice with a jangly guitar sound and catchy hooks.
FINAL GRADE: B

Duck Sauce – Quack
EDM heros Armand Van Helden and A-Trak team-up for a record of exactly what you would expect – nonstop, floor slamming dance tracks that are enough to be an instant party starter no matter where it is played.
FINAL GRADE: B

Rodrigo Y Gabriela 9 Dead Alive
The jaw dropping Mexican guitar duo fire back with a new record that pays homage to those who have gone before us. Each song is a representation of loved ones that have passed that the duo have known and loved. A tribute record of sorts, it once again has the duo speaking with their fingers instead of their tongues.
FINAL GRADE: B

ColdplayGhost Stories
During the making of Coldplay’s sixth record, Chris Martin’s personal life began to unravel. While the world found out in March that he and wife, Gwyneth Paltrow were “Consciously Uncoupling,” he seemed to have known for a while, and that is all reflected in Ghost Stories. Taking influences from artists like Bon Iver and Elbow, Coldplay return with a very somber and heartbreaking record that at some points is reminiscent of Beck’s Sea Change, but nowhere near as original.  Ghost Stories may be one of the most anticipated albums of the year, however, tends to be lackluster in sound but is kept alive thanks to Martin’s heartbreaking lyrics. However, for a band like Coldplay to craft a record like this at this point in their career, a certain amount of respect has to be given. They clearly could have repeated the radio-friendly bullshit that Mylo Xlyoto had, but picked to walk this path.
FINAL GRADE: B-

The Black KeysTurn Blue
The Nashville via Ohio blues rock titans return with their latest record and bring back Danger Mouse to helm the project. Turn Blue is a Black Keys record with a twist, if you look at their previous work, think of it as rock and roll before the 1960’s, this album is now then venturing into the decade that gave us The Doors, Pink Floyd, and Zeppelin. With a trippy influence on the overall album, The Black Keys change it up a bit the only way they possibly can.
FINAL GRADE: B-

The Roots - ….and Then You Shoot Your Cousin
The hardest working band in music return with their latest record and it is sure one to divide fans. The Roots who are constantly busy may find it hard to focus on themselves and their own work. …and Then You Shoot Your Cousin is a result of that. The legendary Philly crew comeback with a symphonic rap record that features more lush instrumentals that it does vocal aggression. The Roots, who have always taken their time to perfect the beat, look to break ground on a new vision and sound for them, yet, it seems to be focused more on what is new than what has gotten them to be who they are.
FINAL GRADE: B-

Sharon Van Etten Are We There
The Brooklyn singer / songwriter returns with her latest album, yet, it just adds to her talented collection of songs without doing anything too diverse.
FINAL GRADE: B-

Lykke Li I Never Learn
The dark Swedish songstress returns with a record that takes such a personal turn, by the end of it, you feel as if you have just gone through a therapy session with her. I Never Learn is minimal in it’s sound but grand in it’s lyrics. Lykke Li’s ability to tell a story through song is one to admire and hear.
FINAL GRADE: B-

EelsThe Cautionary Tales of Mark Oliver Everett
The 11th record from Eels is a mouthful in both it’s title and sonic ability. The record is an understated minimal record that does so much, while in fact, doing so little. It is an Eels record through and through, but channels a personal connection as the singer of the band, Mark Oliver Everett centers the songs around himself and his persona.
FINAL GRADE: B-

Guided By Voices Cool Planet
The indie rock legends return with their “original” line-up again and release their 21st album and second record before the second half of this year. Cool Planet is GBV record, just like Motivational Jumpsuit, for fans of this band it is another to add to the collection.
FINAL GRADE: C

Quick News

Sad news to report, iconic drummer Scott Asheton of The Stooges passed away over the weekend. The drummer, whose brother and fellow Stooges guitarist Ron, passed away a few years ago. No report as to what caused Scott's death, but Iggy Pop broke the news and posted, "My dear friend Scott Asheton passed away last night. Scott was a great artist, I have never heard anyone play the drums with more meaning than Scott Asheton. He was like my brother." Our thoughts to go Scott's family, friends, and band.

Killer Mike has confirmed via Instagram that Run The Jewels, his group with El-P, have finished working on their new album, Run The Jewels II. No word as to when it will be released.

R.E.M. will be releasing their iconic MTV Unplugged performances from 1991 and 2001 as a box set on Record Store Day. The 4-LP set will feature songs from both gigs that did not make air.

Rudimental have confirmed to Australia's Triple J radio that they are working with George Clinton for their upcoming album. Band member Kesi Dryden said, "We actually did two tracks with George Clinton. We went to one of his gigs in London and we got to meet him afterwards, and we sent him a couple tracks and he was really liking it. His management got in touch with us, and he vocalled it, and sent them back. We're going to get back in the studio [soon] to finish it and it will be on album two."

The AP reports that De La Soul are working on two albums to be released this year. One record will be a traditional album and the other will be a mixtape. No word as to when they will both be released.

Just like they did with Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon, The Flaming Lips are now making a covers album of The Beatles masterpiece, Sgnt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band. The Lips are recruiting Miley Cyrus, as well as members of MGMT and Tame Impala. No release date has been given.

The Madchester scene of the late 80's and early 90's was one of music's craziest scenes ever, now, one of the key figures of that era is running for political office. Bez from Happy Mondays told The Manchester Evening News that he is going to run for PM of Salford, England. He told the paper, "I've been saying we need a revolution, and there's no good shouting about it when you're not actually doing anything. If you want to do something about things you've got to get into the corridors of power and take them on."

The Heartbreaks have unveiled the tracklisting to their forthcoming album, We May Stand A Chance, which arrives in May. Take a look:
'Paint The Town Beige'
'Absolved'
'Hey, Hey Lover'
'Robert Jordan'
'¡No Pasarán!'
'Bittersweet'
'Fair Stood The Wind'
'Man Overboard'
'This Is Not Entertainment'
'Rome'
'Dying Sun'

Quick News

Legendary rocker Bob Mould will release his new album, Beauty & Ruin, in June.

Speaking to Rolling Stone, Chino Moreno has confirmed that Deftones have begun work on their eighth record. Moreno said, "The other guys started last week – I'm excited to hear what they've done so far. We don't plan on what kind of record we're going to make. We react to each other – one guy starts playing something then the other guy reacts to it, and the other guys react to that. Next thing we know, we have a song. I think that's the best, organic way to write music. Its worked for us over the years."

Guided By Voices have confirmed that they will release their new album, their second in 2014, Cool Planet, in May.

What once was a Japan-only six-song EP release, D'Angelo will release his Live at the Jazz Café, London: The Complete Show. The show, which was record in September 1995, has been a gig of folklore among D'Angelo fans, now the full concert will be released on March 25.

British band The Heartbreaks will release their second album, We May Yet Stand A Chance, in May. Take a look at the cover below:

2013 - Best New Artist

This superlative and tradition began in 2011 when a little British artist made a lasting impact on us, that artist James Blake, has gone on to release a handful of superb EP's, a magnificent sophomore LP, won the Mercury Prize and was nominated for a Grammy. Needless to say, we feel like we were correct in picking him and starting this award with him.

Last year, we left it up to you, the readers, to choose for us, simply because the field was much to great and we couldn't pick on our own and needed help. You all spoke out and named England's The Heartbreaks as your 2012 Best New Artist and we were so proud and pleased. That band, who will release a new album next year, has continued to release fantastic music and live up to the title.

Now, comes 2013's pick.

The 1975

From the moment we heard their single, "Sex," we knew that The 1975 were going to be massive. In the span of 13 months, they released four fantastic EP's and one of the year's best albums and one of the best debuts we ever heard. When we caught their very first NYC performance on a cold March night at Mercury Lounge, we knew that this band could back up their brilliant music with a fantastic and humble live show. They also, coincidentally, carry on the tradition that the best new music does in fact come from Britain. However, The 1975 are an English band that can unite all music fans, from fans of Joy Division to One Direction, they have the perfect balance between poster-boy pop-rock and Britrock.

We also got a chance to know them this year, take a look at our interview with the band HERE

7 Year Anniversary

Seven years ago this weekend, this website started in a basement in my parent's house on the South Shore of Long Island. It has grown in ways I never ever thought possible. Gaining access to gigs, shaking hands with some of my musical heroes, landing a blogging gig at Huffington Post and at one point, the world's oldest magazine - The Spectator in England. This site has been like a child of mine and watching it grow and it being a passport to my passion has been incredible. From the bottom of my heart and all of my soul, thank you for reading and coming back. It really means the world to me and the small staff we have, we appreciate it.

Thank you again and here is to another year in the books!

Here is what some of our favorite artists have said about us in the past:

“One of the most fun-loving and forward-thinking blogs in the world, and run by one of the nicest guys in the business. Thank you Sal and Officially a Yuppie for getting in there so early with your support." Love from Chapel Club

"Best thing I've seen on the internet since the panda that sneezes.” - Matthew Whitehouse, The Heartbreaks

"Sal and his peeps at OfficiallyAYuppie.com are doing an amazing job of covering fresh, creative music and the entire NYC scene! They're not too hip for the room, but definitely have hip taste." - Doug Wimbish, Living Colour

“I read www.officiallyayuppie.com every week. Sal has his finger on the pulse of both commercial and independent music and entertainment. His blog has something for everyone and his interviews are always insightful. Plus, Sal's a great dude!” – Elliot Jacobson

“Thanks for these great questions” – Mary Foresberg Weiland

“So, does this make me a Yuppie now?!” – Mickey Leigh, Joey Ramone’s brother

“Thank you for the interview. I really appreciate the interest in my project. Be well” –Ben Kenney of Incubus

“It was good speaking with you. All the best.” Ian Mackaye

“No Crap Questions” – Rab Allen, Glasvegas

"Officially a yuppie! Thanks a great name for a site!" - Andrew W.K.

"Thank you for taking time out to speak with me and caring about us and what we do," - Anthony Green, Circa Survive

"It was a pleasure," - Peter Hook, Joy Division / New Order

"Really enjoyed this interview," - Photographer Natalie Curtis, Ian Curtis' daughter

Quick News

Slick English indie band, The Heartbreaks have confirmed they will release a new album in early 2014.

London quintet Chapel Club are calling in quits. Taking to Facebook, the band announced they are parting ways. They said, "As of last week's show in London, Chapel Club is no more. We don't like to think of it as splitting up, because we all still get along very well and the word 'split' implies a kind of collapse or implosion, something ugly and destructive and inevitable. That's not how it feels to us. It's more like we're setting CC aside as having outlived its usefulness. Despite all the amazing fans around the world and all the fun we've had over the last four years (for whom and for which we will always be deeply grateful), Chapel Club as a creative entity has collected a lot of baggage. And lugging that around just started to seem unnecessary. Maybe you'll meet us again in other guises; we obviously don't intend to stop making music (or other things). Who knows. The main thing is you helped us to learn a lot and to make some pretty great memories in the process. And maybe a few good songs. Thank you for the opportunity, and see you around."

Legendary New York City venue, Roseland will unfortunately close it's doors in April. Billboard reported the news this past weekend. The venue, which opened at the turn of last century has played a key role in the city's live musical legacy. It has also been the home to some of our favorite gigs like Bjork in 2012, New Order in 2012, Radiohead in 2011, Atoms For Peace in 2010, Them Crooked Vultures in 2009, Bloc Party in 2008, and so many more.

Courtney Love will be releasing her autobiography, My Story, in December.

FINALLY! The long await Stone Roses documentary, Made of Stone, directed by Shane Meadows will arrive on DVD in the US in December.
